Raid 1 - currenly booted OS drive

I saw Camelot's posts on this and wanted to undergo the process of adding a second drive to my xserves here to create a Raid 1 to protect myself from downtime. I did the following 2 things and got the following errors for each:
1.
diskutil enableRAID mirror /Volumes/Zorilla
Error enabling disk to RAID Could not unmount disk (-10000)
2.
xserve5:/Volumes root# diskutil enableRAID mirror disk7
The target disk must be a volume, not a whole disk
Example: diskutil enableRAID mirror /Volumes/Target
Also I notice drives are slightly different in size (76.56 and 76.57), etc... how does this affect things, as in would I need to reinitialize...

Update:
K, totally solved my own problem.. if people want some info on the issue:
I couldn't get the OS drive to enableRaid at all when it was booted. Every single possible command was a simple "couldn't unmount". I ran ASR onto drive 2, booted off that, enabled it on drive 1, rebooted on that. Tried to add the drive to the raid via diskutil and kept getting a "could not find raid children" error, so I gave up and went into disk utility GUI.. tried dragging the volume and it failed due to invalid request, and then tried dragging the disk itself and it did the trick!
It looks like it took care of the drive size discrepancy as well, which is wonderful news too!

Not sure if I'm following you. I have 4 hard drives installed on my Mac Pro. I had a RAID 5 configured and functional for about 5 months. My battery died on the RAID card. I replaced the battery, seated the RAID card back in the slot I removed it from. When I booted to the USB drive to look in the RAID utility, I could see the battery is charged but my volumes are not showing.
The drives don't show in disk Utility. I built the RAID with the RAID Utility and they did show there. I have a early 2008 Mac Pro, Mavricks OS running Mac Server

GT683: swapping RAID0 HD config for non-RAID/AHCI SSD boot drive

A question re: MSI skus which come with 2x HDs in RAID0 config. My system (GT683DXR-603US sku) came with 2x 500GB HDs (WD5000BEKT) in RAID0 config.
First thing I did was to replace this with a Crucial M4 256GB ssd, though prior to this I took an image of the stock system (prior to even booting it up the first time) and restored said image onto the SSD.
The first time I booted off the SSD (no other HD in the unit, as I pulled both of the WD 500GB out to try the SSD alone), I went into the BIOS and changed the SATA config from RAID to AHCI. But Win boot cycle almost immediately resulted in a blue screen. I then changed SATA config from AHCI to IDE, w/the same boot result. Finally, set the BIOS config back to the original RAID, and Win7 booted fine.
Upon confirming SSD Win7 boot and testing operation successfully, I pulled the SSD, place the 2x 500GB HDs back in the system, just long enough to break the RAID 0 array.
Replaced the SSD in the primary bay, and left one of the 500GB HDs in the 2nd bay, and that's how I'm using the system now: Crucial M4 SSD boot drive, WD Scorpio 500GB data drive ... with the BIOS SATA config set to RAID mode.
So the system is working now, but question is - should I pursue trying to change the BIOS setting from RAID to AHCI mode? I'm thinking that in order to get the SATA 6Gbps performance out of the Crucial M4, the Intel SATA config needs to be set to AHCI ... yet apparently I first need to modify the Win7 config (the SATA driver, perhaps?), before I can modify the BIOS sata config?
Any suggestions would be appreciated!

bump ... any thoughts? I'm thinking to leave my sysetm in RAID mode, as from what I've read recently Intel storage mgr supports TRIM in RAID mode as well as AHCI.

Problems stting up RAID (Mirror) for boot drive.

I have a Mac that I want to setup mirroring on the boot drive (it's running Mac OS X Server and once I get everything going I need to minimize downtime).
Since you can't move a drive with data into a raid set I first cloned the boot drive to a 3rd drive, booted off that drive, then set the two 80gb drives up as a mirror. after cloning the data from drive #3 back to the now mirrored pair I can't boot off the mirror.
I've tried using both the Startup Disk preferences and also the bless command to mark the raid as the device I want to boot from but it doesn't recognize it as a bootable device.
What do I need to do to make the raid bootable?

The drive I want to boot off (the mirror) is "Macintosh HD"
The temporary drive it's running on now is "Macintosh HD 0"
Both drives show up in the startup items preference panel, I have "Macintosh HD" selected. When I hit restart it fails to recognize it as bootable and fails back to the other one.
I'm not sure which folder you want the permissions set on. Here's what it looks like right now.

Fresh install and preserve boot camp drive?

I have an older 2007 MacPro (2 dual core CPUs @ 3Ghz) that has the following...

I'd like to do a clean install of SL. The reason I want to do a fresh install is that when I went from Tiger to Leopard (2007 MacPro) vs. Leopard pre-installed new (on my 2008 iMac), there are indeed some difference -- specifically different Leopard driver support that appeared on a fresh install iMac, but not when "upgrading" on my MacPro (printer drivers for example).
My hunch is that SL will detect existing drivers and NOT upgrade them to the SL version -- which may or may not be a good thing especially if the SL version drivers are 64bit while my L version drivers are 32bit. So the end result with going the "upgrade" route will be a mixed bag of 32bit and 64bit drivers. I'm pretty sure this is NOT gonna be a good situation if I ran the "upgrade" rather than a fresh install.
However, it's CRITICAL that I not lose my Windows Drive (Boot camp) with Vista 64 on it. This is a separate physical drive (Bay 4) but if I do a fresh install of SL, will the installer recognize I have a Boot camp drive and will it still allow dual boot using option key at startup (showing my the Mac or Windows drive to boot to)?

Yes you are correct the EFI Looks after the booting of OS's from any hard drive.
if you hold down the alt key while booting it will give you a list of drives it thinks it can boot from.
In theory any windows volume with XP SP2 or newer should boot (+though if not installed on the same hardware originally is will complain about divers & if more than 15% of the hardware has change windows sometimes needs to be reactivated+)
I run multiple systems at my office using the same multi hard drive setup you have and have never had any problems changing / updating the Mac HD while leaving the Windows HD fully intact.

Proliant ML310e G8 boot error, boot logical drive is configured but missing or offline

Following a power outage the server will no longer boot up. During bootup  I get the following...
HP Dyanamic Smart Array B120i RAID Controller (v3.06.0m 0MB) 0 Logical Volume

    Run Array Configuration Utility
Press <F5> to run HP Array Configuration Utility (ACU)
Press <ESC> to skip
    **** Boot Logical Drive s configured but is Missing or Offline.
In ACU it shows 930GB available on the 1TB drive. There are few article I found that mention going into F8 boot option and nothing fits in with the options available.
for example these
   1. start the computer and wait till you see; "Press F8 to run option ROM configuration for Array utility"
   2. Press F8, you will see the Main Menu, Select the last option "Select Boot Volume"
   3. Select in Direct attached storage,
   4. if you see first logicar drive 01 select it .
   5. Press F8 To save Logical Drive 01 as Boot Volume.
   6. Press F8 to Exit and start with New Boot Volume.
I did find the following advisory but the controller isnt in the ones listed under Scope.

Also as I mentioned, viewing the ACU screens refer to createing array and creating logicl volumes, no mention of setting boot order. And going the the steps of creating the array and logical volumes seem it will wipe the data.

RAID 1 failure of both drives

My HP m9520f was configured with 3x1TB drives, two in a RAID1 mirror and one as a spare. This had been running fine and was the boot volume for Windows Vista.
Today, the computer would not boot from power-on, and the Intel Matrix Storage Manager ROM (ctrl-I) indicated "Error Occurred(0)" for both of the RAID1 drives. It asked me if I wanted to recover and use the spare, to which I answered YES. Unfortunately, it then goes on to say that the rebuild will occur in the operating system, which is will not boot.
The following is a picture of the configuration screen as it is today... Drive 4 is the spare which was promoted to "Member Disk(0)" but contains no data as the system will not boot.
Can anyone suggest how I can recover my RAID volume and boot the computer?
Alternatively, are there any further diagnostics to indicate why the RAID volume failed completely?

Unplug the failing hard drive and reboot. This has worked for me in the past when one hard drive of a RAID 1 volume set has failed. You better hope that both hard drives have not failed (it happens). The rebuild process should be transparent but it will take a while to complete.

3rd-party software to make RAID 1 (mirror) on a drive that already has data

Is there software which lets you simply add a 2nd drive to an already working Mac and make a RAID 1 mirror without waiting for the following:
- clone the internal drive to an external for backup
- add the 2nd internal drive
- erase both internal drives
- make the RAID 1 set out of both drives
- clone the data back to the RAID 1 from the external
This works just fine. It just takes a long time and requires extra external drives to boot from and do the cloning.
What I'm looking for is a utility that will reduce the process to:
- clone to external for just-in-case backup
- add the 2nd internal drive
- use the utility to mirror the 2nd (new) drive to the pre-existing data on the 1st drive and make a RAID 1 mirror set out of them (without erasing them)
- there is no step 4. there is no step 4! (ha ha ha)
in short: to make an OS X RAID 1 without having to erase a drive that already has customer data with the Disk Utility or some other software
I checked Made4Mac already - none of the listed partitioning tools seem to be able to make a RAID "in place". I'm assuming this is not easy or Disk Utility would already be able to do it.
It's too bad the Disk Utility can only make a RAID 1 using blank, virgin drives. Maybe they'll fix it in Leopard. Can anyone from Apple comment?
I know about SoftRAID - but it's $149 per seat. I'm looking for something I can use on customer machines over and over again, without having to sell them a software license - like Partition Magick or DiskWarrior.

Why not use the CLI and do it that way? i don't know it AppleScript hooks into the terminal and/or can run terminal commands but that may be worth looking into as well.
I would think that it would be a good idea to erase all your drives in the RAID at once and start fresh. Why not back up the internal to a pair of RAIDED external FW800 drives, add the second drive in the Mac, make the internal RAID by formatting both drives and then copy the external RAID back to the internal RAID? Oops, I know, now we have a step 4.
Nobody from Apple ever comments here. We are all users, just like yourself, that just want to help.

I have an Xserve rack mount model Xserve 2.26 Quad Core (EMC# 2279) with an Apple RAID card, 24GB RAM (running 10.9 Server software)
Purchased two Western Digital 1TB SATA III 7200 RPM 64MB Cache Black WD1003FZEX drives
It came with three 160GB SATA drives. I'm leaving one of the original 160GB drives for the OS, but I want to replace the 2 other drives and set it up with RAID 1 (mirrored). I bought 2 brand new Western Digital 1TB SATA drives and formatted them on another Mac through Disk Utility with Mac OS Extended (Journaled) formatting. I then placed the new drives in the Xserve and booted it up. After I login it immediately gives me 2 error windows saying...
"Apple RAID Card
The Apple RAID Card installed in your system requires your attention."
It has two buttons underneath this message allowing me to either select 'Ignore' or 'Open RAID Utility'
I've tried to RAID the drives the Disk Utility and through the RAID Utility with no success.
I have both drives mounted on the desktop, as separate drives, but I really need to set these up as a RAID 1.
I've been reading other forums, where others have been able to get this to work by using a jumper on certain pins (5 & 6)of the drive to back down the transfer rate to 1.5 Gb per second. I tried that and it didn't work for me. Maybe I used the wrong pins -- I just don't know. I'm also wondering if there is some Apple firmware that is required on these drives? I'm asking for help from anyone who has gone through this same issue. Thanks in advance.

UPDATE -- I had an issue with the RAID card battery, it was dead and I have since replaced it. But I am still unable to setup the RAID 1 drive configuration. Does anyone know if it has something to do with the faster transfer rates on these new drives. Maybe they need to be clocked down with certain jumper settings on these Western Digital drives? Or am I fighting a losing battle because these drives don't have Apple firmware? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Dynamic Smart Array B220i RAID Controller keeps loosing Logical Drive after power shutdown.

Hi, I own two HP Microservers Gen8. I added SSD drive on the DVD SATA port in both. I created Raid 0 over the SSD Drive that I can boot from it, but everytime I shutdown the box (power outage), the logical drive is lost. Note that the logical drive is not lost on reboot. Only when the box is is shutdown. Any ideas why is this happening? Here are repro steps: Enter Smart Storage Administrator
Select onDynamic Smart Array B220i RAID CtrollerClick on "Unassigned Drive" Screen shows me:SATA HDD:
- 3TB Port1:Bay1
- 3TB Port2:Bay2 SATA SSD
- 120GB Port5:Bay5 I selected Sata SSD drive in Port5:Bay5I clicked on "Create Array"
On a next screen I select the following:
I selected RAID 0, 256 KiB Stripe Size, 32 Sectors, Maximum Size
I click on "Create Logical Drive" On a next screen:
A message: Logical Drive was successfully created.
I click on Finish
I exit the Smart Storage Manager and reboot the system. The server boots from the Raid0 Array (Sata SSD Drive in Port5:Bay5) -> No problem If I just reboot the server, it boots from the Raid0 Array. - No problemIf I shut down the server (or during Power outage), the Smart Array tells me that there is no logical array during the boot. The boot fails. -> Qualifies for a problem.
Please can you explain why is the logical drive lost after power loss? Why the controller does not remember the setting? Other details:- Dynamic Smart Array B220i RAID Controller (v3.54.0)- When I boot to Smart Storage Administrator after power failure, I can recreate the Raid 0 over the SSD drive and boot again - this a work around the issue. K8N SLI-F: RAID won't boot windows?

I just installed this motherboard yesterday and it seems to recognize the RAID no problem, and Windows MCE installs just fine. but after the install is complete and it restarts the computer, the systems fails to boot and gives me a safe mode option or Start Windows Normally, etc... I try both and it just automaticly resets the computer both times. I've tried reinstalling 3 times now and I get the same result everytime.
I have a 200GB Western Digital backup hard drive and it installs windows and boots just fine. weird? (I have to disable the IDE drive when istalling the raid, or it tries to make the IDE boot a dual boot instead of keeping the RAID as Master Boot, and yes I switch the master boot in the BIOS and it keeps installing window on the IDE unless I disable it, but it still doesn't start Windows in dual boot mode either)

P.S. I just noticed while gettng here that there is a V1.6 bios for generic K8N SLI Series Motherboards, but under K8N SLI-F motherboards there is only a V1.3. can I use the generic K8N SLI Series BIOS or is that for a different MB?

was searching the forums some more and seen someone had a similar problem and he did like I did and only removed the power cord from my IDE drive and left the PATA cable connected. well I removed the cable and reinstalled windows again and all is fine now.

This happens not just with the SSD in my Mac Mini, but with another SSD in my MacBook (both now running Mavericks). So far as I know, all of the kit I am using is in good order (despite the file corruption reports). So I am beginning to wonder if it could be due to a bug in Mavericks? Both SSD drives have been formatted to MacOS Extended (journaled) format. Should I have used a different format, I wonder?
Has anyone else encountered this issue?
Does anyone have a solution?
Or an explanation that might help my investigation of the issue?

I understand that the Corsair Force 3 is not one of the SSD drives that are supported on Apple Macs.
I did try downloading and using Trim Enabler, but the error message came up both when it was off and when it was on.
I understand that not everyone thinks Trim Enabler is a good program, though there is a new version out now, so I may give it another try.

Creating a mirrored raid set with a hard drive that already has data on it.

I have a hard drive that I keep my photos on, and want to create a mirrored raid set that includes this drive, with its data, and another drive. How can I do this without erasing the drive with my photos on them? I am running 10.7.5 if that matters.

Creating a Mirrored RAID reformats the drive and loads a substantial RAID driver and some tables onto it. When completed, the drive is inherently a member of a RAID set, and will continue to be so even if moved to another Mac.
because of this, you cannot create a RAID directly on a standard drive that contains data already in any reasonable, risk-free way.
To amplify what The Hatter has said above, Mirrored RAID is not Backup. Mirrored RAID only increases mean time to repair to keep a drive failure from becoming a Data Disaster. You still need a Backup. Mirrored RAID does not protect you from deletions from user error, crazy software, or "just because".
I run a mirrored RAID in my Home Server, which contains all the Users files for everyone in the Household. And I also recognize (after being burned by it) that Mirrored RAID is helpful, but not a sufficient Backup by itself. I back up the Users Drive automatically to an External drive using Time Machine. [So what I am advising is not just theoretical, I am living what I am advising.]
With WD Black 1TB and other very good drives in the under US$100 range, there is really no reason NOT to invest in several drives for such an undertaking.

Late 2013 imac 27" bootcamp install of win 8.1 pro, boot camp driver setup errors out

I installed windows 8 pro via boot camp. then once the win8 install completed the boot amp driver setup began automaticly. it errored out at some point with the below error
Boot Camp Install completed
he installer incountered errors before the boot camp could be completed.
To retry these operations at a later time please run the installer again.
What is this error? It does not give me anything to go on. it seems like most of the drivers were installed fully, but there is still a divce under device manager that is not installed completely. Also, I don't have the boot camp icon in my system trey in the bottom right corner of my screen.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Having difficulty in Win 8.1 changing boot order drive at the Bios level

My desktop computer has 32GB of DDR3-1600Mhz Memory plus a 128GB SSD boot drive "C" and 2 2TB SATA drives and finally a 1TB Sata drive.
My problem is that the 128GB SSD drive is maxed out space wise. I want to change the boot drive to the 1TB drive, but when I go into the Bios, and slect "Boot Order" it only lists two CD Rom drives and "Windows Boot Manager". If i go out to look at available drives, it shows all my drives. How the heck can I select the 1TB drive to become the boot drive if its not even listed under "Boot Drives"?
Using disk partitioning software, it advises that before copying everything over from the boot SSD drive to the new 1 TB drive, I should change the boot drive so that when it starts up again, it will go directly to the correct drive.

That is impressive for a OEM. However, I think it is probably not a good idea to try to make a different drive the boot drive. Typically with a unit set up like that, the SSD is only used for essentially the OS and special programs that need the extra speed of the SSD. Then use the other drives for data and nonessential ( for speed ) software. About the only advice I can give is to reassess the way software is installed to get some things off the SSD or replace the SSD with a larger capacity unit. I think switching boot drives will be a nightmare you will not enjoy.
