RAM increase prevents boot up on HPpavilion ze4420us

Hello, I installed 2x512k RAM boards from on-line store to get max 1 gig; trusted their technical match.  Refuses to bootup; only cycles keyboard lights on/off (screen stays black).  Individually all boards work in original slot, but when 2nd slot occupied computer won't run windows.
Company sent replacement boards (Samsung mfr) which they pretested - stil NG.  Again, boards will work as a single 512k .  HP spec max at 1gig split across two 512K boards.  At HP site I updated BIOS.  No improvement.
Thnx

  • Sudden increase in boot-up time (OSX Lion, MacBook Pro)

    Hi all,
    I have a 2010 MacBook Pro, with the following specs;
    OSX Lion
    Intel i7 2.8GHz (dual core)
    8GB RAM
    256GB SSD HDD
    Intel HD graphics
The issue that I have been having is a sudden, unexplained increase in boot-up time. Yesterday and for the past two years, my MBP took circa 15 seconds to boot up, but today it has been taking approximately 5 minutes. I have the latest software update.
My hard drive space is running low; I only have 4GB of space left, could this be a contributing factor?
When I switch on the laptop, it get to the picture of the Apple logo, without the spinning gear below, hangs there for approximately 4 minutes, and then eventually continues to the user log-in screen.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
    Step 1
Select "system.log" from the file list. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the times of the log messages referring to boot times. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Post the messages logged during the time something abnormal was happening. That time might be before or after the boot.
For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes after the boot time, not before. If the problem is a system crash or freeze, post the messages from before the boot time, when the system was about to crash or was failing to shut down. In either case, please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning or the end of the log extract.
Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
If the log doesn't go back far enough in time, scroll down in the Console file list to /private/var/log/system.log.0.bz2. Search that archived log, and if necessary the older ones below it, for the same information.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
    Step 2
    Do the same with kernel.log.
    Step 3
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • I have an alert message in disc utility. Error: storage system verify or repair failed. Problems were found with the partitian map which might prevent booting.

While running verify disc in disc utility on 251 GB SSD SM256c Media I came up with this message: Alert system verify or repair failed. In the descriptions box of history it said, problems were found with the partitions map which might prevent booting. This is followed by a message in red reading, Error: Storage system verify or repair failed. At the time I was down loading raw pictures off my camera through a card reader across my computer to a relatively new 2TB Western Digital portable hard drive. after about 13 to 15 pictures downloaded that drive faileded. My Mac Book Air works fine, but i get this message now everytime I run disc verify on this disc. The Macintosh HD checks out fine.

  • Mac pro 4,1 2009 every OS but the Snow Leopard takes 6gb of RAM just on boot? Yosemite unusable

I have a 2009 Mac Pro quad 2.66 ghz with original 12gb of ram(an option at time of pruchace, but I also have different modules for 6gb from another machine of the same series, problem is not related to the RAM modules). I also have multiple hard drives and tried installing everything from Lion onwards to any of those (even having a single drive in the system), and the problem presists.
    The issue:
When I boot up Snow Leopard system takes around 1.5-2gb of ram and that is perfectly fine. Everything works great.
When I boot up Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks, Yosemite, the system itself takes 6gb of RAM or more just too boot. This can't be right, how would any newer Mac even work with their 4gb.
I noticed that in Activity monitor system automatically opens a ton of apps that have no use on my system like WiFi(that I don't have). Seems like it automatically boots every single app that is part of the system, it takes it like 30 minutes to load all those useless features, and system is crawling then, works ok 30 minutes in but I have half my ram wasted.
How do I stop it from doing this? Everything is fine with Snow Leopard, but I am stuck in it, and I can't purchase a lot of apps that I would if I could actually use newer software?

    Problem description:
Yosemite takes up 4.5-6gb of ram just on boot compared to the 1.5-2 gb that Snow Leopard takes on the same system

Basically, 5GB of my RAM is gone just because I turned my computer on, and ok this is on HHD, but even then Snow Leopard is completely functional one minute after I push the power button, Yosemite takes that long too boot, too, but then it takes it another half hour to stop spinning the hard drvie for it's unused apps and actually let me load non-system apps and files and start working.
I THINK I FIGURED IT OUT! How do I stop the system from cache-ing recent files?

  • Motherboard does not POST - Decompressing BIOS image to RAM for fast booting

I recently returned my motherboard for a warranty repair due to a noisy northbridge fan. Following the repair my system was rebuilt however the motherboard now fails to POST indicating "Decompressing BIOS image to RAM for fast booting" on the LED D-bracket. Prior to the repair the system was running ok.
I have tried resetting the BIOS with the jumper and also reconnecting all of the cables and only the minimum required components to the motherboard (CPU, memory, graphics card). The motherboard was also reinstalled inside the case to ensure no earth between the case and motherboard exists.
Does anyone know why this error is reported, what is the cause? Could it be that the motherboard is faulty or have I perhaps damaged the CPU or memory modules during the rebuild?

I have tried all of the valid combinations with the memory modules with no other components but the CPU connected to the motherboard but still no POST. I'm currently waiting on a response from MSI regarding this issue but I'm beginning to think the motherboard is damaged. I've already endured a 12 week wait on the motherboard being repair via Dabs it is looking like it will have to go back again so its going to be 4 months without my system

  • K8n neo2 "decompressing bios to ram for fast booting"

it was working great for about two hours. It gave me some good benchmarks    So I decided to play some farcry and during the load up of a saved game it locked up in the middle of loading. I restarted it and it hasent posted since.  The two diag lights i get are two top green two bottom red and never moves from there. decompressing bios to ram for fast booting according to the manual. I then took one ram stick out, stuck diffrent ram in there, reseting the bios, diffrent video cards.
i figured it was the motherboard and i got my rma back today same thing. so is it the cpu then or another mobo?

Make sure that the corsair C2 is set with cas 2.5 on AMD64 and vdimm voltage to 2.75v in bios.
Auto spd and auto on voltage won't set it straight for theese modules , set all values manually in bios and dont enable agressive settings .

  • IMac won't boot windows 7 after ram increase to 12gb

Hi all, just wondering if anyone has has a problem trying to load up windows 7 in boot camp after installing 2 4gb sticks of ram in their iMac. I have a iMac intel core 2duo and the ram is working fine in OSX. When I try to boot up in windows it just sits on the black screen with the flashing icon. I took the extra ram out and it booted up just fine. The version of windows 7 is the ultimate edition 64bit.
    Any help would be great
    Thanks
    Mike

Fixed the problem with this setup
Of course this means i just lost 4GB.
Let me tell the full story.
In the beginning, long ago, once upon a time. My iMac had 2x2GB ram sticks which were in the two DIMM1 Banks. I then told myself "I WANT MORE RAM BECAUSE LOLZ". So i bought 2x4GB ram sticks. The two empty slots were Bank 0/DIMM0 and Bank 1/DIMM 0. and I added them in there. having done that, I booted OS X up, worked great, had 12GB, everything was shiny and beautiful. Soon after I wanted to try it out on windows. I restarted my computer and BAM the blinking cursor just sits there, being stubborn and all. I then told myself "holy balls, this new ram i got is bonkers" (them words, I blame the language filter). Then after giving it a little thought, i just asked myself if it was because I had ram from two different manufacturers. I removed my old ram, which has nice Samsung stickers on them, and booted it up on windows. Still had the same problem, I then decided that maybe this is all really mentally challenged so to win I had to think like a retard. I took my new ram and inserted it in the same slots where my old ram sticks were (DIMM1 Banks), booted windows up and IT WORKED.
I still hold all of my WHYs on this subject but I will keep messing around to see if I find a better solution than just leaving both DIMM0 banks empty

  • P55-GD85 - not all ram available at boot / need to reboot. [Solved]

I've 4 sticks Corsair XMS3 - 2 GB @ 1600 Mhz installed on my P55-GD85 board with the XMP mode enabled.
When I boot the PC, only 2 sticks are recognized (4087MB) at the end of the process (even if the boot sequence is notifying 8173MB ram) and I need to restart the PC to obtain the 8173MB really available. Seems that during 1rst boot, not enough power is provided to awake the 4 sticks (and I've a good Seasonic 80+ 750W PSU...) and when restarting the PC a few seconds later, all memory is always available.
I tried reseating them, it not changed anything....
I've run the Windows 7 memory verificator, no problem...
I 've run MEMTEST when the all ram was available, no problem...
What do you advise? Increasing the memory voltage slightly? Disblabling "quick boot" option? Something else?
Thanks in advance for your help and advises.

Tried reseating all my memory sticks, one after the other, in the right DIMMs (beginning with the nr 1) and rebooting each time in between...RAM was increansingly recognised...but once the PC was stopped...same thing when booting it after a while...only 4087MB available and need to reboot to have the 8183MB available.
Tried to reconnect the power pins to the MB...same, not better.
Tried to plug the PC directly to the sector without passing through the BackUPS device...not better.
Seems related to temperature of system/components...when booting in the morning, I need several reboots to have the memory fully available. If the system has been working a lil, one reboot is enough. When the system has been working for long, memory is fully available at each boot
Will now try to reseat the sticks in another order...another idea Doctor ?

  • MBP 2010 8gb ram Crashing on boot

I have tried to upgrade my 2010 13" MBP with the 8gb 1333 DDR3 corsair. I did this once already with my 2009 15" MBP and worked just fine without any problems. I have read many success stories for upgrading a 2010 13" with the exact same ram and it's begining to frustrate me because i can't figure out if it's hardware or software with the computer. I did try the new ram in 15" just to make sure the ram wasn't bad and it booted just fine. Back to the 13" it will either simply crash on boot and have a error messae wich i can try to add a link to later but i did get this crash report (see below) after i put in the old 2gb sticks running at 1033. But it will either simply crash or i will get the grey apple logo and the spinner will start spinning for about 10 seconds than freeze. I let it sit for about 10-20 minutes multiple times to see if it just needed to think but it didn't progress pass that. i've also tried just using one of the single sticks instead of having both in and that didn't help either. tried reseting pram and enter safe mode but both attempts ended in it crashing the same way. I also tried using a different harddrive from another 13 macbook that had Snow lion on it thinking that something rooted on the 13" MBP operating system was causing it not to boot properly with the ram, that also didn't work. I am up for any suggestions. Thank you - D

I know that it says that it likes 1033 but..... when i had read around to upgrad my 15" people said it would work and would just clock the ram speed down from 1333 to 1033. I installed it and to a shocking suprise it didn't even clock it down to 1033. My frustration is that this 13" MBP is a year newer and isn't even wanting to boot with the ram. I would assume, and be glad with it booting and just clocking the RAM down. i wouldn't see why that wouldn't be a problem. Thank you though for youru suggestion.  Thanks - DJ

  • Windows XP Pro - 2 GB RAM limit with Boot Camp

    Hello,
I have a MacPro running windows XP Professional, have Boot Camp 2.1 installed, and my computer only sees 2 gb of RAM when I have 4gb RAM installed. OSX sees all 4 gb. I am very frustrated because many of the applications I use only run in Windows. As I know this is an outstanding issue upon further research, has anyone found a way to amend this (aside from switching to Vista 64) or know if Apple is planning to fix this issue? I fear that Apple's intentionally done this
which makes it even more infuriating. This is NOT a Windows issue; we have other machines running XP with 4 GB RAM just fine, which leads me to believe that its a problem with Boot Camp or Apple's EFI (Bios).
Thank you in advance for your input !

    Hi,
it's a hard- and a software problem as well.
Since 32-bit Windows has a limited range of adress space (4GB) to use for harware (PCI-E) extensions to use, the avaiable memory to use is diminishing the more expansion slots there are.
With the Mac Pros 4 PCI-E slots which reserve their needed adress range whether they are in use or not, this leads to an avaiable memory of 2GB.
Since 64-bit Windows has not the 4GB limitation, therefor the PCI-E adress ranges do not delimited the amount of useable memory.
XP-64bit would also do this trick, but is not supported by Apple.
    Regards
    Stefan

  • 24" iMac and 2 GB RAM won't boot

My new 24" iMac will no longer start up with the 2 GB of Apple RAM installed(2 x 1GB DIMMs). The Power light indicater on the front comes on, but the computer doesn't actualy start or boot up.
I tried removing one of the 1GB DIMMs and the machine boots up fine with just the 1 GB of RAM installed. Doesn't matter which stick or bank i try, as long as it's only 1 GB, the computer starts up fine. Any idea what's causing this and how it can be fixed?
This problem started today when i tried to start up the machine after it had been shut down and unplugged for 1 week while i was on vacation. Prior to this, the machine ran flawlessly on 2 GB of RAM.
    Any ideas?
    Greg

Aloha and Welcome to Apple Discussions!
    Try resetting the PRAM:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
Mahalo for the welcome and the advice. I'm now able to boot with the 2 DIMMs installed after resetting PRAM. But, the computer is only showing 1 GB installed instead of 2 GB. Tried running Hardware Test off the CD. It shows only 1 GB RAM, and it and logic board functioning properly.
Any other ideas. Tried calling support, but it's after office hours?

  • How To RAM Increase In Server 2008 Standard Above 64Bit

I have a IBM server System x3650 M4 with installed Operating System windows 2008 server standard R2 64bit, we are facing a problem of RAM usage in windows, i have installed total 64GB RAM in server but RAM showing is 32GB usable in windows properties,
How i am increase RAM by any command or any Patch of windows server 2008 standard R2 64bit, pls help me as soon as possible.

32GB is the maximum RAM that can be used by Standard. In order to use more you need to use a different edition. Enterprise and Datacenter have a maximum of 2TB RAM. See this description:

  • Ram limitations, 64 boot boot up

    Hi
I've just be told on another thread that Mac Pro's from 2006 to early 2007 can't use more than 3gb of RAM and can't boot up in 64 bit mode.
I have 5 gb of RAM which the computer knows about and is there in Activity Monitor, so I assume it's being used.
However, I can't start up in 64 bit mode (I've been told to hold the 6 and 4 keys down when restarting).... Nothing happens, it just says in system infor that the 64 bit kernel isn't running (or something)....
My Mac is a Mac Pro 1, 1 if that means anything to anyone!
So is my beloved Mac a loser or not??

I've got a 2007 MacPro with 16 GB of RAM. No it won't boot into the 64-bit kernel. No single instance of a 32-bit program can access more than 4 GB of memory. 64-bit programs have access to the entire 16 GB. However, not many 64-bit programs out there need access to more than 4 GB (although there are some out there). I do use BitVice (32-bit program) for compressing video for DVDs and it launches 8 instances and uses over 12 GB of RAM in doing so.
I wouldn't say the older Macs are losers. By the time the older Macs do become 'losers' it'll be well worth upgrading to a newer Mac anyway.

  • RAM Bezzel; Possible Boot Issue

On the MacBook Pro. I have noticed now 2 times on 2 books; That initially the MacBook Pro will not boot.
    Removed Battery.
Remove 3 Screws covering RAM Bezzel.
    Remove Top RAM Card.
Re-connect Battery and the MacBook Boots. <shutdown>
Re-connect Top RAM Card. MacBook Boots AGaiN. And will continue to boot, IF, you do not tighten the 3 screws ALL the WaY.
My Conclusion.. THe Area where the RAM Bezzle is located is getting hot and crimping the ribbon connecting RAM to MB. Losening the Screws keeps the ribbon from being crimped and regains connection to MB.
    The Question(s) Is(are)?
Can anybody confirm this?.. Can you better explain this issue? ..
    Lastly...
If I do this on Dead Mac Books in House, Does it void our Warranty?

    I have seen this issue:
Make sure the Memory Bay cover is "seated all the way" into the recess on the upper most part of the MBP. And tighten the screw only "hand tight" NOT torked on.
You can do it over and over again and still not have the memory bay cover on right. It must be completely flush and almost "snap" into place.

Can you tell me if I ran into the same issue? I have a MBP 2.2 G Santa Rosa. I ordered 2x2G sticks from OWC (always good stuff there). I opened up the RAM compartment, removed the 1G sticks, and put in the new RAM.
Closed it all up, replaced the battery, plugged in the power. Tried to restart, and got nothing- no boot sound. Only the "Sleep" LED flashing 3 times, pause, repeat. On the Apple website, they say it's due to "Marginal" Ram.
So- I take it all apart again, put back in the original RAM. Boots fine.
I put one 2G stick in the top slot (an original 1G in the lower). Boots fine. Do the same with the other stick- fine. Then I put a 2G stick in the lower slot- boots fine. Both 2G in the slots and close it all up- fine.
Now it's running with both 2G sticks, System Profiler tells me it has 4G ram (yay!) and so far Rember is looking good.
But the "Marginal Ram" warning has me a bit worried. Was it because I somehow didn't seat the chips or cover properly? It all seems to be working great now, but I don't want to be stuck away from home without my screwdrivers and the MBP not boot or something.
When you've seen this before, was it accompanied by the 3 Flashes syndrome?
    Thanks!
    Jeremy
    Jeremy,
Funny thing you mention this! I had the exact same problem. I had some really expensive RAM I bought for my original 2.16 MBP 17". I recently sold it to upgrade to the SR 2.4 15" Glossy which I love.
I popped in the RAM and I get the exact same problem you described. I compared both RAM sticks and I see the old RAM says 5300 and the one that came with the newer Mac says 5300S.
I am wondering if that makes the difference.
Seems the RAM you have and that I have is just not compatible.
