Rant, and advice to nokia

1. in general, all nokia suite is big, bloated and a resource hug. even if the device is rarely or seldom connected to the pc, meanwhile it takes like 100 megs in memory and to a certain degree uses cpu, even if it is doing nothing at all, or if rarely does something, since the device does not stay connected or the suite in use. Even though (as i believe), the idea was that there was going to be only one suite for all models, this is not the case, and some utilities change form model to model. there is an e90 and a n85 in my house, for different people, both with different apps (not all) which means every device bloats more the pc usage, even if it is not doing nothing at all at the time
2. nokia plans to release some models (like n8) to try to stand up on their own again (ie: cathc up with iphone, which may be lousy but sells more and has higher profit margin). some pointers on that account:
if the device has been already tested, proved and all, and the final deign and production process has been set from a long time, why wait so long to release in the market just for market reasons? the same thing did the now extint 3d video cards '3dfx' (which made the now legendary voodoo cards, and is now part of envidia). they had the products already designed and stuff, but did not release them but keep announcing their cualities and specifications for when thye should be relased, meanwhile other companies keep producing things with similar or higher features and released them before the announced release date of the 3dfx products. kinda stupid if you ask me
on the same note: a lot of product, each with one special characteristic. how about fewer products and integrate all those novelties to those products?
also, it is not to make an iphone killer so lets make an iphone clon, just like every other single model out there in the last 3 years. iphone, even being a lousy device, was made popular because it offered something that no other had at that moment (being able to move pictures with the finger, which is something you can do in public without having an excuse, like 'yea i am going to manage the inventory at my factory with the apps in my ohone soplets take out the phopne and do some stuff so the other people around me can see me with my new phone'. movin pictures with the finger over a screen does not require an excuse). you should offer something that no other has (not just hardware, but user experience, but based on novelty hardware)
since now all phones are iphone clones, it is not only to put a touch screen on a flat phone, you also have to differentiate in your designs. thumbs up on the n8, which is in the right direction on that account. yes it is hard to think about something that differentiates a big touch screen from another on the visual aspect, but being a multimillion company that should not be an excuse (specially if you want to keep being a multimillion company)

Hi, Have a problem connecting my nokia n8 to nokia pc suit. My collegue has done it sucssesfully with his. PC suit is better for me, as using that for work. Cant manage loads of things (like calendar entries, txt..) the way i need with OVI. Have a samsung n210. Is there any softwere you could recommended to solve this problem?

Bad advice from Nokia UK may have invalidated warr...

I purchased my Lumia 900 from Britain on 8 June 2012.
Returning to London briefly in May this year, the phone began continuously rebooting. The Nokia Care agency in East London confirmed that the phone was covered by warranty and sent the phone for initial assessment.
But even after a full reset, the phone was unrepairable. They suggested it could be a motherboard problem and would now need to send it to higher level service for resolution. However this process could take two to three weeks and I was only in Britain for 10 days. They said they could not send the phone on, and it would have to be physically collected from them.
They said to take the phone and contact the Nokia Customer Services through UK Call Centre to get advice on my options in view of my circumstances.
I called Nokia Customer Services and explained the situation and was advised that they could not accept a collection/return from an address in Britain unless it was to be returned to the same address. They instructed me instead to take the phone back to New Zealand and pursue the warranty claim process through the local Nokia agency.
All these actions are documented.
When I got back to New Zealand five weeks later, it appears that a. the warranty had expired in the meantime, and that b. Nokia NZ could not help as it was only covered in the UK.
At no time was I informed that the phone:
would not be covered by warranty from within New Zealand, or
that the warranty expiry date was only 10 days or so away on 8 June. (I did not know this myself until I returned to New Zealand.
Having been a loyal customer of Nokia over the years I feel I have been cheated out of my legitimate warranty claim through poor support and bad advice.

Thankfully this issue may now be resolved thanks to good engagement and consideration by case manager Art at Nokia NZ. He has agreed that the warranty should be honoured in the circumstances and has authorised repair. Good news.

See Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device. But you'll still need the password.
Once you have the computer authorized to use the account she could change the password again to stop you buying apps on her card (assuming it's not on yours!). It would lock you out of upgrading them too but they should work unless she uses the deathorize all feature.
It depends on how amicable the split is...

Recording Graduations, creative tips, and advice. Can someone direct me to some where I can find real creative graduation footage tips and advice. I have a proposal to make to a school and I do not want it to look like a traditional recording for a graduation

visit the school newspaper people and school student organizations and clubs etc ( including sports, drama, music, chess club, science labs, computer IT, all the departments in school.... )
Get samples of news articles ( you can scan headlines and stories and use in your film ) and photos and information about graduates ....
pick out a few that show promise of telling " story" about how the school and community of students ( neighborhood , students as a whole group ) helped one another over the years to get to the graduation...and have fun with it...have some funny stuff as well as some serious "promises" the future holds for students...
highlight those few stories among the general "story" of how great it is to get to that point of graduation and moving on...
shoot the ceremonies and so on, and then add your "story" elements in post with some music ( maybe local music from graduates in bands )

Here is a long thread about a 7610 supernova mirror screen I hope someone (an employee with intelligence) from nokia will read it and help me.
I got my mom 7610 supernova and it's disaster outdoors and the worst part is this has been recommended by person working at store when we were considering to buy something else. When we took the phone back to the store after one and a half month they told us it's this way you have to use it that way (they were about to tell us that dont use it outdoors) and they gave a number and told that they can't change the phone with something else but nokia care number might help us. When we talked to the nokia care they told that "take the phone to the service and make a check up there then we will take back the phone". Today I took to the service and they told me it's not something they could do and I should take it back to the store I bought and they could help me. I left the service and called nokia support line from my cell phone( I have a N91 I love nokia please dont get me wrong) and at the support line they told me AMAZING stuff for exactly 16 minutes, please take your time and read these I guarantee that you will love it.
"Why didn't you checked the screen before you buy"-My reply : "Do I have to check that can phones screen be seen under sunlight? It was a shopping mall.I told you that it only happens outdoors."- Support guy told me: "If it happens under sunlight you could have seen it under normal light at the shopping mall."

That screen grab helps a lot. There’s a much easier way of doing what you’re doing.
Remove all your tabs and set the text in justified paragraphs.
I’ve typed in dummy text in the example I made below, but after “19.1” put in a space and put your blinking cursor after the space and before the ’N’ of ‘Notices'.
Then hold down the Command key and hit Backspace (on Mac at least - it’s the key between the Inverted commas/ apostrophe key and the return key).
The text will jump into place the way you want it to.

PS You can set a tab, instead of using a space, in the description I gave above. So, after 19.1 or 19.2 or 19.185 etc etc insert a tab, then hit the Command Backspace after every paragraph number and they'll all line up exactly together. You'll find that editing text within the paragraphs
after you've set it will be LOADS easier this way.
You can put the tab anywhere you want it to be using 'Command-ShiftT' and putting a 'left align' tab just after the number. Just type the Command Backspace after the paragraph number and it'll work

Audigy platinum ex questions and advice - dual ouput or dual card - motherboard audio op has died

Hi all.
im new to the forums and would like some advice please.
i use my pc for mixing music and DJ'ing, but the problem that i have is that the onboard sound output has died. i need 2 intendant / separate sound outputs, one for preview, and one for main/live output.
Now, is it possible to configure a audigy platinum ex to provide the required outputs, and if so, how.
if this is not possible, can i use a soundblaster live card in the same pc to provide the required outputs, or as i suspect the answer is no to this due to shared file names within the drivers and such, is there a recommended card that i can use in conjunction with the audigy, or will any generic sound card do the job (for preview output).
i dont want to replace the motherboard and reinstall all the software at the moment, and i use mixmiester, fruityloops, reason and such for mixing/creating, and either mixmiester, tracktor, or pcdj fx for dj'ing.

i didnt know that you could do that.....using the AISO driver allows access to all sorts of outputs..........when i have time im going to have to see what they all do, and what else is available, but the biggest thing is that it has sorted out some of my immediate problems......
i will need to go through all the software to see if i can get access to these outputs from it all, but it definitely works with mixmiester, so i dont need to re plot all the files.
just so that people know, i set the audigy speaker config to 4.0/4.1 in THX setup, and then looked in the advanced audio output section of mixmiester (under output config) and presto....2 independent audio outputs.
dont suppose that anyone knows where to get a complete and detailed manual for what all the software and hardware does and how to configure it all........

Hardware recommendations and advice for 100 client network

We are currently looking at setting up a very basic separate wireless network for a client in two adjacent large cabins (3m apart) that will support up to 100 clients max concurrently. This will be solely for contractors to access basic internet, connections to web mail etc. There will be no existing infrastructure to connect to, so we will be looking at an internet connection of some form, a small switch and the wireless network. Range isn't an issue as they are next to each other its the support for such a large amount of connections. I thought a clustered setup of 2-4 WAP321 might be a bit stretched and we might get issues as the number of simultaneous connections gets near 100. I was also looking at a couple of standalone Aironet 1600s, one in each cabin.
The network itself is very basic, as it is literally just shared internet access but I need to ensure that it's reliable with 100 clients connected.
I did ring presales tech but they weren't mcuh help and sounded like they knew less than me, so any help would be appreciated.

By checking on the WAP321 datasheet I see:
- Recommended user support = Up to 32 connective users, 20 active users
- Active clients per cluster = 80
I agree with you when say "might be a bit stretched and we might get issues as the number of simultaneous connections gets near 100", therefore I suggest you to go for an enterprise-class, entry-level device like the Aironet1600 you mention. I would anyway suggest you to contact back the presales team or the Wireless-Mobility Support Community for further assistance and advice.

I have just taken the bold leap into Indesign and this is the first day of my 30 day trial.
I need help and advice from you good poeple...please.
I have been successfully creating A5 booklets (folded A4) using MS Word and printing to a desktop printer. MS Word sorted out my page order for me at printing time so the correct pages were put together.
I have been reading as much information as I could find but I am still unable to do the same in Indesign.
I'm looking forward to using the advanced layout features and having control over what I do but, I need to work out this basic step before I go any further.
I hope what I have explained makes sense.

So presumably you create a new document, A5 portrait, facing pages. Make sure your ducument page count is a multiple of 4.
Create, type, tweak, ponder, edit, smile, save.
To create you booklet using InDesign, from the file menu select Print Booklet.
You will probably need to jump back and forth from the Print Settings button adjusting Paper Size, Orientation, Color, and from the Print Booklet tab set for 2-up Saddle Stitch.
Much has been posted on this topic, these are the basics, Print Booklet is not the best module Adobe ever wrote, IMO

Sorry, a serious error has occurred... Rant and a solution

Warning. Much of this post is frankly a rant against a poorly written program and the so-called experts who offer up solutions here. If you are one of these experts and you have a thin-skin, don't read this post.
If you just want a solution to the problem skip to the bottom of the post.
INTRODUCTION
Adobe, I want my money back! I rarely buy Adobe products and always wind up regretting it when I do. This product was no exception.
I tried the trial version. Bought the product along with Photoshop Elements as part of a promotion.
Produced a couple of videos with it, no problems. Then, inexplicably, it stopped working for me and I would get the infamous "Sorry, a serious error has occurred..." message while trying to start or open a project. This would happen almost immediately, as it was drawing its intial screen layout.
MY FIRST BIG COMPLAINT... USELESS ERROR MESSAGE
This has to be the most useless error message I've ever read. The few times I've had programs crash on me, the error message that results usually gives me enough clues to find and fix the root problem.
ONWARD...
Uninstalled it with Revo Uninstaller, re-installed it.
Deleted all old project files.
Tried to re-start by clicking 'New Project' button.
Prompts me for a location for the project. I accepted the default.
Immediately gives me the "Sorry, a serious error has occurred..." message and shuts down when I press okay.
MY SECOND BIG COMPLAINT... INCOMPLETE UNINSTALL
I did observe that when I went to use the Organizer after the re-installs, the thumbnails of previous videos were still there. Clearly some cache wasn't removed during the uninstall.
If a cache wasn't removed, perhaps other remnants of the the program were still lying about on my machine. If they were the problem, then no amount of uninstalling/ re-installing would solve the problem.
CONTINUING...
At this point, I came to the forums for help and my worst fears were confirmed. This error message is a common problem. The suggestions to solve it were all over the place. The sheer depth and width of this faultfinding indicated to me that this is a seriously buggy piece of software.
With one or two exceptions it seems that nobody ever resolves this problem.
MY THIRD COMPLAINT... WELL-MEANING BUT UNHELPFUL 'SOLUTIONS'
These are some of the typical solutions I read on these forums:
- Your computer is probably underpowered. Give us a list of all your specs.
- Your computer doesn't have enough hard drive space. Give us a list of all your specs.
- Your computer doesn't have enough RAM. Give us a list of all your specs.
- Something on your computer has 'changed'. Give us a list of all your specs.
- Your hard drive is dying. Back it up quick!
- It's probably your anti-virus software. Turn it off.
- Some of your drivers are probably out of date. Update them all. Give us a list of all your specs.
- That's a different issue... start a new thread. (Lame...)
Most of that advice is... well, lame. It's pretty obvious that these people are just winging it, i.e. throw everything up there and hope something works. Sorta like that tech guy on the support line who always ends up telling you to 're-install the program' because he really has no clue what the problem is and just wants you off the line.
As someone who has used video editing programs for years, I'm here to tell you that the problem is rarely the computer specs. The specs listed by Adobe for this program aren't that onerous and my three-year-old Dell 1525 laptop with less than 20 megs of space on its 136 HD and 2 megs of RAM was able to produce videos with no problem.
Most computers sold within the last three or four years are pretty robust and should have no problem with consumer level video editing.
Sending people off on a quest to 'fix' their computer and research a lot of computer specs is a time-waster. That should be the LAST thing you recommend after first eliminating the program as a problem.
ONLINE SUPPORT
This is worthy of its own post, but I won't bore you here. Suffice it to say that Adobe tech support deserves some sort of industry recognition for its ineptitude.
MY SOLUTION
First, let me reinterate. The problem is probably the buggy program and not your computer, assuming your computer is relatively new and mid-range or better.
In my case, the clue was in the fact that not all of the program is uninstalled when you try to do a uninstall / re-install. The program likely had some sort of corrupted cache that stopped the program and that remained after an uninstall.
I unstalled it again, but after some research I came across this tool:

The reference above applies to Photoshop, but the Organizer elements applies to Premiere unintalls as well.
After applying these two solutions and then re-installing, my Premiere Elements is working once again.
Had I followed the typical advice I would have spent days updating drivers, installing RAM, de-fragging and cleaning up my hard drive, listing specs to post here, etc. And none of it would have mattered a wit.
The program is still buggy though and my original problem may re-occur, I admit. I will certainly never buy another version of this POS program again, but, in the meantime, I hope I can save someone here some time in looking for a fix for their own message.

Adobe has less than good telephone support... a year or so ago that was even admitted to by the Adobe CEO, with discussion of that over in http://forums.adobe.com/community/general/forum_comments or maybe it was http://forums.adobe.com/community/general/forum_comments (been long enough ago that I don't really remember)

A few rants in one place - Nokia / S60 3rd Ed issu...

Having owned several Nokia Series 60 phones from a 6600 to my current N95, I feel it's time to ask for a few changes to be made. Can someone from Nokia please pass this on to development:
1) Music
Why can't the music player be restricted to scanning only certain folders or be told not to scan the phone. I have ringtones on the handset and music on the card and Music player refresh finds all and I get a messy list of artists/albums/genres
2) Gallery (Images & Videos)
Why can't gallery be tailored to only scan certain folders. I have had to remove all my tomtom POIs cos gallery shows me all the little bmp files and this gets up my nose
3) Contacts
If I open contacts and highlight a contact and then select options->send message, when I am done, contacts has closed. If however, I open a contact, highlight the number to dial and either select options->voice call or press the green call key, when the call ends, contacts is still open in background. The next time I want to use a contact, I open contacts and I have to press the back key as the last contact used is presented on screen. I hate inconsistency
4) Active standby
Why am I informed of daily events on the day they occur but am informed of appointments a week before they occur
Why can I not turn off the search and wlan scanning lines in active standby? I never use them and they get in the way of useful pim entries
5) Outlook synching
Why do events that repeat annually synch ok (as anniversaries) but ones that repeat monthly (1st sat of each month) do not
6) Slide and calls (N95)
Why is there no option to end a call using the slide? I have to use a bit of freeware to accomplish this (not the end of the world but...)
7) Standard power saver
Who can read the small date/time power saver. Again I have to use another bit of freeware to be able to read it - why not a font size option?
8) GPS
Can the internal GPS receiver be internally linked to a pseudo bluetooth device so tomtom can see it. Tomtom uses no data whereas MAPS is pretty useless without network access for data and I do not have an inclusive data plan
These S60 phones and especially the N95 are brilliant but would be even better if someone fixed these annoyances, in my oppinion that is.

might be a bit late with this one, but i agree with most of your rants, but i can help with the tom tom.
someone developed some software which simulates an external gps using the internal device and you run it in conjunction with Tom Tom. Cant get the program to run with my 6220 classic, but im assured it works fine with the n95 and phones with the same software and below.
Its not illegal stuff or modifying anything to do with the phone and its free, so im hoping this post wont get deleted.
its called GPSd (google GPSd internal bluetooth and it should bring up lots of hits). cant remember where i got it from, but if you cant find it, ill send you the version i have
