Re cataloging expired tapes

We have a pair of tapes that we need to recover some files from. Sadly they are outside of our retention range, which was an oversight with setup and I have fixed that. But I mark the tapes as free then unmark them as free and select re catalog tapes. It
worked on one tape and showed how much data is written to tape, the second tape is re catalogs it but does not show how much data is written to tape. The when I go to the recovery tab and select external DPM tapes I cannot drill down at very far at all into
what I need and I am pretty sure the files I need are on the tape that is not showing how much data is written. I have tried running the re catalog again with no luck. Any ideas?

Hi,
You can try this….
1) Make a backup of the DPM database.  (dpmbackup.exe -db)
2) Write protect the tapes, then in DPM right-click and select "Mark tape as Free", then right-click and select "unmark tape as free".
3) Close the DPM Console
4) Open SQL management studio and connect to the DPM Instance.
5) Run the following SQL script to remove external tapes tree under recovery tab.
Use dpmdb  ---change db name accordingly
delete from dbo.tbl_MM_MediaMapWhere DatasetID in (select DatasetId from dbo.tbl_MM_PhysicalDataset where ExternalDatasetInformationId IS NOT NULL)
delete from [DPMDB].[dbo].[tbl_MM_PhysicalDataset]where ExternalDatasetInformationId IS NOT NULL
Delete from dbo.tbl_MM_ExternalDatasetInformation
where dependantdatasetid IS NULL
6) Now try re-cataloging the tapes and see if the recovery point shows up under the new external tapes tree.

  • Tape Library - Extend Expired Tapes

    Hi,
I have several questions regarding the Tape Library behavior.
I have DPM 2012 R2 UR3 with VTL library. I have several PG that is using Long-Term-backup to the VTL. I have several protection Groups that is having long term backup. Each PG have its own Library with several tapes presented. The schema is 1 month
kept for 12 months and 1 year kept in 5 years. my questions are:-
    1. Is it possible to extend tapes expiration date? For example changing the 1 month to be kept for 10 years?
    i read this thread
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/bf5115d4-a050-4aca-9759-8180c415d415/how-can-i-change-tape-expiry?forum=dpmtapebackuprecovery and Mike wrote
•Expiry dates for valid datasets that are already written to tape are changed when the retention range is changed during a protection group modification.
To change the behavior create the IsDatasetExpiryDateChangeInModifyPgAllowed DWORD value under the following registry key, and then set its value data to 0:
       HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft Data Protection Manager\Configuration\MediaManager
Does that means if i add "IsDatasetExpiryDateChangeInModifyPgAllowed " and change the Protection Group retention range will that change the expire date for all tapes in the library?
    2. If i present a new Library to each Long-term PG and kept the old library presented in DPM Library. Will the tapes still be usable even if they will expire? the idea behind that is keeping each library and its containing tapes untouchable for like 10 years
and when the tape expires i will mark them as free (contain data) and recategorize the tape. in that way i can still use the tapes for a specific amount of time.
    thanks in advance,
    Laith

    Hi,
Without the IsDatasetExpiryDateChangeInModifyPgAllowed registry value, when you change the goals for LT tape, DPM will change the expiry dates on existing media.  Some weird behavior can occur if you have three goals configured then go down to two or
one goal, so the registry value is meant to maintain the original goals.
Expired tapes are always usable / readable by DPM - the only restriction is you only get the option to restore to a network location and not back to original location.  DPM 2012 R2 UR3 did change behavior so the tapes show up on the normal calendar
and not under external dpm tapes tree, so you may want test that and see if there are other recover options for restoring from once expired tapes.

  • Moving protection groups to a new server - How do I move tape data?

Hello, I am looking to install a new DPM server and decommission the existing DPM server.
I did read the Technet documentation on
Moving the DPM Server to a different computer
However, it seems easier to load a new DPM server, point protection agents to it and then recreate Protection Groups. Once all of the recovery points on the original server have expired I can proceed in removing it.
The only thing I'm stuck on is how to move all of the Tape data to the new server. And once I do that, how do I associate the recovery points on tape with the newly created Protection Groups?

    Hi,
The DPM tapes written to on the old DPM server can be moved to the new DPM server and imported, however, the data on them cannot be restored until you re-catalog the tapes, then the recovery points will show up under the recovery tape under EXTERNAL DPM
    TAPES.
However - These recovery points can only be restored as flat files using the "recover to an alternate location" option.  The browse will only see protected servers on the new DPM server.  So basically, if you don't use the same DPM Server
name and restore the DPMDB, you will not get the option to recovery any data back to original location including application data.  This will mean after a flat file restore, you will need to manually move or copy the files back to the applications folder
and replace the existing files for the application to be able to use them.

  • All drives busy, how to free one for tape labeling?

Our backups are currently wedged because of a media shortfall.
We have a dedicated mediafamily for full backups and all of the tapes for that pool have
been exhausted. All of the drives are have backups running (paused, really) and waiting
    for tapes.
It should simply be a matter of labeling more tapes, but here is the problem:
catxcr allows you to examine the transcript and choose what to do. Selecting "help"
offers the choice to label a tape

Any suggestions how we can free up a tape drive long enough to label more tapes
into this mediafamily so backups can continue?
Restarting services is one possibility but this should be considered as a last resort.

If the other tapes are expired then they will be automatically relabelled for use with this media family, so you should never need to manually label tapes unless you're trying to expire tapes that still have valid backups on them.
The borrowdev commands are applicable to a single obtool session, so you have to just type "obtool" to get into that prompt and then do the borrowdev commands in that one session.

  • OSB Catalog Media Family Attributes

    Hi,
In the section about the Catalog Recovery Media Family Object, the OSB Admin Guide states that "Oracle recommends rotating backups across two volume sets", without actually saying how this might be done.
I have a backup window running from midnight to 6am, with the catalog backup taking place at midnight.
My assumption is that this rotation across two volume sets can be achieved by tweaking the write window and retain time of the OSB-CATALOG-MF media family to something like a 6 hour write window and a 24 hour retain time. Of course, I could extend the retain time out to a number of days so that I could have that many days of history, but by restricting the write window I can guarentee that I only have one catalog backup per volume set
Is my assumption correct, or is there some other way of achieving this?

Yes that's a way to do it. This way it will always use a new tape for the catalog backup, and those tapes will be kept for as long as you specify. Personally I keep one weeks worth of catalog backup tapes (so 7 tapes) just to be really safe against media problems.
So I use write window 1 day, keep volume set 6 days.

  • Tape marked as offsite ready due to a single protection group left behind on tape

    Hi,
we're using DPM2012, we have it on two nodes, the first backs up to disk and then offsite to the second server which goes to disk + tape.
    In general tape colocation works however I have a slight issue;
At the moment we are running close to the number of tapes we actually need to backup the volume of data we back up, this means that every day I mark tapes as free using the force free tape script available on the web... This works but occasionally I notice
that the script will not quite finish - DPM will take the tape before it completes and start using it as a free tape i.e. immediately starts putting data on the tape.  Normally this is okay but it occasionally leaves a single bit of data on the tape..
the backup will continue and perhaps write 100 GB for example, then all of a sudden that tape is marked as 'offsite ready' when there is clearly lots of free space on the tape.
So today for example I have about 10 different PG's on a tape, all with todays date as the backup date, expiry is plus 2 weeks. But then there is a single PG on there with a date of about 2 weeks ago which I'm assuming is what has made the tape offsite ready.
I don't really want to have to stop active backups from running to be able to mark a tape as free as a fix - anyone know of a way around this?
My second question - relating to co location again - if a backup of a PG needs to span a second tape - can it only do so on a free tape?  some of our larger backups will sit and refuse to write to a tape which might (by estimation) have 500 GB free
    space left on it.
    Thanks
    Chris

    Hi,
    <snip>
so I might have a tape with 500 GB free space on it sat waiting there, and the job won't utilize this tape.
    >snip<
Apples and Oranges - When DPM needs a new tape for spanning purposes, it always requires a free or expired tape.
When a new backup job starts, DPM looks at all media In the library and determines what tape to write the new data set on.  This is based on the settings of
the PGSet and either picks an existing tape that is still available for writing or it picks a free or expired tape.
So, in the case where a tape is only half used, review what data sets are already written (right-click, view tape contents) and the review the Write Period and Expiry Tolerance values for the protect group set used by the protection groups configured to
    that that PGSet..

  • DPM 2012 uses the same tapes over and over

Is there a way to let DPM use all the tapes in the library?
At this moment we have 24 tapes in the library. But only 8 of them are used by different protection groups.
This way some tapes will get old very quick. I would like to see the tapes being randomly used and all would be used equally

DPM do not reserve any Tapes for a particular Protectiongroup, here a short description how DPM chosse a Tape.
DPM uses free Tapes bevor expired Tapes
DPM uses Tapes in a Slot with a higher number first, so if there is a free Tape in Slot-12 and a free Tape in Slot-02, DPM will take the Tape from Slot-12 first
    Maybe this helps

  • Tape List missing necessary tape

I have two separate protection groups - System State Protection Group and Default Protection Group.
We rotate between 3 separate drives - Firestreamer is used to emulate tape.
Disk 2 and 3 are currently in the library, but Disk 3 isn't assigned to the protection group "Default Protection Group", it is only assigned System State Protection.
Naturally - long term backup jobs failed and DPM is asking me to add a free tape - I can't mark Disk 3 as free because it is assigned to "System State Protection Group"
My question is - how would I go about assigning Disk 3 to both System State Protection and Default Protection Group?

I'm sorry - I misread what you said in your excel sheet.
Both tapes are showing "Offsite Ready" and is calling for a free tape. However the tape I'm wanting to use (Disk3) should be available as it hasn't backed up "Default Protection Group"
After re-reading the blog I found some insight into the issue I'm facing:
When a tape is marked offsite ready, no additional data sets will be written to that tape until ALL recovery
points expire. [The existing data on the tape I'm using, thought from a different Protection Group, doesn't expire until 11/8]
Once a tape is marked as expired, DPM will show the tape as expired in the DPM console and can overwrite the tape during subsequent backups. DPM will always favor a free tape over an expired tape when it searches for a tape to use if a new tape is
    required.
So that answers my question of "Why is this happening" now I have to move to "What do I have to do to fix it?" As it stands right now - "Default Protection Group" will not get backed up all week until 11/8/14 @ 11:00PM. [This
    is a weekly run job]
If "Default Protection Group" were to not get backed up this week, and resume backing up @ it's scheduled time I'm guessing that this will put it back on track, since right now the tape I'm wanting to use "Disk3" already has data written
to it from a different PG.
I apologize about the n00bish questions and confusion here - I did not have this job when this was setup and all people involved in setting this up are no longer here and not able to be contacted :|. I'm learning
    as I'm going.

  • How do I access my online Palm account?

I need to change the credit card number in my Palm account because my other one expired. I do not see a link anywhere on Palm's web site to access my online account to do this. I know I set it up and even have my password, just don't know the url for it.
I would think Palm would just have a link on here somewhere to "Login". Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Hello and welcome to the forums;
Changing your credit card on file for the App Catalog is done through the device, the same way it was initially added. Open the app catalog, and tap on Preferences & Accounts. The top box is the Account box, tap on it, enter your Palm Profile password, and tap Continue.
From the next screen, change or update any new information, tap Submit, and that's it.

  • How can I remove calendar alerts from my iPhone?

My iPhone 4 (iOS 6) seems to be adding calendar alerts on its own and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to remove them. I use iCal on my Macbook Pro (running Mountain Lion 10.8.2) to sync my calendar events. None of my events on iCal have alerts set to them and I have disabled all alerts in my iCal preferences. Yet, for some reason, when I look at a calendar event on my iPhone, an alert is set for it.
How do I remove these properly? I do not simply want to silence these alerts, but figure out how they got there in the first place and remove them completely. For comparison's sake, I've included an image of the event from iCal and the event from my iPhone.

    Hi pjdemeo,
I understand you want to delete all of the photos from your iPhone.  As a precaution, I would suggest importing the photos and videos from your iPhone into your computer.  This will give you a backup for the images, and after import you will be asked if you want to delete the photos.

  • Changed from one Pixi to another - 3G connection interrupted during app restore. How do I get to them?

    Hi,
We lost a Palm Pixi, and got another one to replace it.  We don't have a data plan (have to pay by the mb), so when we were signing in to our Palm Profile as we activated the replacement phone, I quickly turned data off and wifi on.  I did want the apps from the lost phone to be restored to the new one, but they did not download over wifi, and I'm not sure how to proceed.
Most of the apps (like Angry Birds) required a WebOS update and were not even available to us on the first Pixi until we had gotten the newer WebOS version... so I don't know if our Profile would've allowed them to be put on the replacement phone without the WebOS upgrade. I'm in the process of doing that (upgrading the WebOS) right now.
But... how can I re-start the process of putting the apps, etc. stored in my Palm Profile onto this phone?
    Thanks for any assistance!
Post relates to: Pre Plus p100ueu (SFR)

Once you get webOS updated on your Pixi, the apps should auto-install.  If they do not, open the App Catalog, then tap the shopping bag icon at the bottom-right of the screen.  That will take you to the apps you've installed or that have failed to install.  If your apps do not auto-install after the webOS update, you should see some yellow exclamation marks in the My Applications screen.  Just tap each app to restart the download.

    For Datafiles and ArchiveLogs :
SET UNTIL works because RMAN can query the Controlfile (that is already present) {OR the Catalog, if available} to determine the Database Incaranation and identify all the BackupSets, BackupPieces and SCNs for datafiles.
    For Controlfiles :
SET UNTIL needs to be able to query a source or determine a default location. If a Catalog is available, it can query the catalog. In the absence of the catalog, it can only determine the expected location to restore from on the basis of the AUTOBACKUP location and FORMAT.
When you have AutoBackup to Disk, using an FRA and have the AUTOBACKUP FORMAT set correctly you will notice that the controlfile backups go to a directory that has the date as part of the directory name. RMAN can "query" the backups it finds in each of the folders in the autobackup location and determine the correct piece to restore from. This is predicated on the FORMAT being the expected format. That is why the example also shows how you set the FORMAT before you do the restore -- to "tell" RMAN what format to expect. (Remember that it has no repository -- controlfile or catalog -- to query so it doesn't know the backup piece names, unless they follow the expected location and format !)
All of this works well on disk. On tape, it has to actually send it's requests to the Medial Management Layer -- it is the Media Management Layer that maintains the catalog of tapes and files on tapes. (Remember that RMAN still doesn't have a repository that it can query !).
Going back to my earlier comment that SET UNTIL is used for Datafiles and Archivelogs : Because it is much easier for RMAN to query a known repository for all the information it needs.

  • PrEl 2 wanting to backup projectfiles

If I copy the *.prel files will that give me all I need to start working from backup if I get a harddisk failure?
or do I need to copy from any of the folders: "Encoded Files", "Adobe Premiere Elements Auto-Save", "Adobe Premiere Elements Preview Files", "Media Cache Files" ?
Of Course i will also copy my DV video files and my folder with music files which will reside in same structure afterwords as before m:... etc

    Jan,
As Peter says, you will need only your PREL and your Assets.
I create a folder structure for each Project and all of my work is done there. I will Copy any Assets, like SFX files, music and artwork into their respective sub-folders (so the originals are elsewhere). The only "original" material in there is my Capture DV-AVIs from tape. When I wish to archive, I just Copy the entire Project hierarchy over to an external HDD. I'll then Delete things like the Media Cache files and the CFA and PEK files (from the Audio). Now, I do Copy my AutoSave files, but that is only as a fallback, should something become corrupt. They are small (just PRELs), but I've had to go back a couple of times. I also archive and catalog my tapes and do not ever erase and re-use these, so if I loose my Capture files, I could just re-capture again. Some lost time, but no lost footage.
I have not explored the Archive function in PE, but even in Pro, I usually just do a Windows-level Copy, rather than Project Manager.
By keeping everything in a structure with my Project, it's basically a one-button process to either Copy, or Delete, when done (except for the removal of the Media Cache, etc.).
