Re-installing OSX Tiger

I am getting a panic message telling me to restart my computer. It looks like there might be a problem with the registry and I need to re install the operating system. I bought my ibook second hand and it didn't come with any disks. How do I do this without disks?

No it is the 2 disks that came with the mac.

Help! accidentally install OSX Tiger into my backup harddisk!!
i lost all my backup files, work, my life! i have 2 HDD and one is suppose to be installed onto and the other one is my backup hdd..
what happened is i selected onto the wrong hard-disk...
is there anything i can do to recover back files that i installed over osx?
    any suggestion much appreciated

Hi Ma'e, Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Installing OS X should not overwrite your files unless you chose "erase and install". If you chose "Archive and install" look for a folder on the top level of your hard drive called "Previous System".
If you did an "erase and install", If there is any chance of recovery at all your best bet is Prosoft Data Rescue. There is a free trial to see if it can recover what you need. But don't do another process on that drive until you've downloaded and run it. Also, a service that has been recommended but I cannot personally endorse is DriveSavers.

  • Help Installing OSX Tiger on iMac G4, seems HD Volume Structure corrupted

I need help Installing OSX Tiger on an iMac G4 800MHz 17" Flat Screen LCD, 80 GB Hard Drive, 256MB RAM, DVD-R/CD-RW Super Drive, model# M8812LL/A. I have a Tiger install DVD and i put it in the drive and everything is fine....I go through the steps and when it gets to "Preparing the Disk" - "Verifying destination volume"....it just sits and nothing happens. It will go on for 20+ minutes or so and then the installer will quit saying there was errors during the update. Anyone got any idea what is happening? I'm running OSX 10.3 Panther currently. I just tried running Disk Utility using the install DVD.....it attempted three times and couldn't repair --- I then went out and purhased DiskWarrior --- I boot from that disk, it begins to run; then as it is repairing the volume it freezes and stays frozen for hours. I've rebooted and tried it numerous times with no luck. Is the HD no good? Should I just do a complete reinstall of Tiger and erase everything? I'd rather not, but I backed everthing up in case I need to. Also, when I ran TechTool Deluxe from the booted CD, it said the Volume Structure was corrupted. My Tiger disc is a retail full install disc that I purchased.
    Thanks for your help!!!

Use Disk Utility to Restore to a FW drive.
Use one of your FW drives, and create a 24GB partition - later you can reuse this for your emergency boot drive). Restore the DVD to FW volume. Boot from there to install with - very fast.
Low level format is what you probably want/need and the only way to do that is ERASE with the option to ZERO-ALL (after you backup any files you don't now have on disk or DVD.... and where are the backups?).
When you install it will also verify the DVD install disk itself.
Have you tried using FSCK from the command line? Or do you no longer have a valid system on the boot drive? Nothing to lose it seems at this point from trying. Just hold down COMMAND + S on startup. At the prompt, follow direction to type:
    /sbin/fsck -fy

  • Installing OSX tiger on cleaned out used Mac book Pro

    Hi all
I have a universal OSX Tiger install Disc and was wondering if I can install it into a used Macbook Pro which has been wiped clean. Thanks for your help
    Web dude

If you mean a retail disk (black with a silver X on it), then no. The retail DVD is for PowerPC only. You can't install it on an Intel based Macbook Pro.

  • Help formating and installing osx tiger

    hi everyone!
can anyone help on how to uninstall osx tiger from a mbp-that is clean clear my hard drive- and installing it again.is this even possible?
    thanx!

    ola aqua!
ok thanx.look in the mean time i was having a look at the documentation on the osx installation guide that came with my mbp and there is a part that explains how to erase the hd.should i follow those steps?they seem very right to me..
    thanx in any case
    star will follow
this is the info i gathered:
    "Erasing and Formatting Your Disk
When you install Mac OS X, you can erase the destination disk. To do this, click Options in the "Select a Destination" pane of the Installer. Select "Erase and Install" and then choose a format. In most cases, choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
Important: Because the "Erase and Install" option erases your destination disk, you should back up your essential files before installing Mac OS X.
You can also divide your hard disk into several partitions before you install Mac OS X. To do this, choose Utilities > Open Disk Utility and click Partition. Partitioning erases the entire hard disk, so be sure to back up your essential files first. Follow the instructions above to install Mac OS X and applications.
Note: Before you can install the applications that came with your computer on a partition, Mac OS X must be installed on the partition."
im just not sure i understood the partition thing but ill have a closer look and ill sort it out ,i guess-hope!!
    many thanx

  • Must update firmware before installing OSX Tiger on OS9

I'm trying to bring an iMac G3 with OS9 to life. It's brand new, never been used before, and doesn't yet have internet. I will get internet (Airport Card) soon, but first have a software update problem.
After starting the iMac, I have inserted the install DVD for Tiger. The computer says it must restart to install, and when it restarts, the computer says it must update firmware before installing. I have to choose a system with which it will start up and my choices are:
    OS9: Hard Drive
    OSX: Install DVD
My 3rd option searches for a location, and ends up restarting in OS9.
Every option either results in the inevitable error message that the firmware needs updating or using the OS9 environment.
I read Apple support saying that firmware needs to be updated to fix this problem. Support suggests updating firmware from the OSX install DVD, but I haven't found such updates on the DVD, and need to overcome the firmware problem.
Please help, I am anxious to use my computer!
    Thank you!
iMac G3   Mac OS 9.0.x   updating to OSX Tiger

    Hi, Kristine -
    Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
You can download the firmware update you need from either of these Apple KBase articles -
Article #58174 - iMac: When to Install Available Updaters
    Article #86117 - Firmware Updates
In order to install the firmware update, the machine must be booted to OS 9 on its internal hard drive. It's a good idea to have no external devices connected when you do it, other than the keyboard and mouse. If you can, print out the ReadMe that accompanies the update.

  • Installing OSX Tiger on new hard drive on a iMac G4

    Hi
I've had a iMac G4 for about 4 years and the hard drive started to fail, seeing as my computer was way beyond any warrenty I opened it and replaced the hard drive with a maxtor 160GB drive. Ive put it back togethr and can boot it up using a firewire drive with OSX installed fine. But when I try and boot the computer and instal from the OSX disk that came with it, I hav a problem, it says the software can not be installed on this computer.
I've tried disconnecting the firewire and everything non essential before rebooting but I cant get it to work, any one know what I need to do?

Yeah, fraid so. When Apple ships out computers they all have install disks designed around that specific model. If you try to use that Macbook disc on a G4 tower it will detect the difference and refuse to load. It isn't a copyright thing but rather a difference in drivers or other software needed for that model. The retail version of the OS is a universal install including everything needed for every model capable of running Tiger. Presumably it doesn't load what isn't needed.Keep in mind that Leopard is due in October.

  • Installing OSX Tiger on external drive

I have tiger OS10.4 installed on my macbook pro. I have a few external drives, one of which I have tiger os10.4 installed and use as a startup drive for certain work (audio) that I do. I want to install tiger OS 10.4 on another newly acquired hard drive but when I insert the apple OS tiger CD and ask it to install on the new HD it tells me that I cannot have the OS installed on this computer. Is there a limit to how many times I can install tiger from the CD ?

You can install Tiger a many times as you want on the computer the discs shipped with.
It may be the disc format. Try erasing the disk and then formating choosing 1 partition >> options >>GUID.
    Let us know.

  • I re-installed OSX Tiger and now I haven't got iDVD, iMovie & iPhoto???

    What's going on?
I re-formatted the mac with the tiger installation disc and everything is at factory settings but there's no iDVD, iPhoto or iMovie, but I do have iTunes.
Do you know what's going on, can you help?
I purchased my mac from a person who had it on display. I don't know though maybe iLife doesn't come with the OS, I thought it did. If so, then where is it?
    Thanks guys

    Hi ltpowda,
please check what kind of install DVD you have. Is it gray (hardware specific restore disks) or black (retail full install version).
If it is black you are out of luck. The retail versions do not include iLife. You have to buy iLife separately.
If they are gray AND fit the exact computer model you have you can find detailed instructions here:
Using Restore discs with computers that ship with Mac OS X 10.3.7 or later

  • Can I install OSX Tiger server version on my G4 Powerbook?

    Hi everyone...
I cannot find the disk(s) for my Powerbook G4 (1.67GHz PPC)... so I've resorted to purchasing them. I found (on ebay) a set of disks being described as such: "Apple Mac OS X Server 10.4 Tiger M9769Z/A (PPC)"
My obvious question is... will this work on my PB G4?
I'm attempting to clear out the laptop and give it away but would like to re-install the OS for the new owner (a neighbor's teen getting started in music with Garageband)...
    Any quick advice?  Thx...

You may be able to call AppleCare directly to ask an OS X specialist about the availability of Replacement DVD system discs for Tiger 10.4, and Leopard 10.5, with white labels, for supported PowerPC macs; these were available and cost about $20. each DVD. These may not be available still, and knowledge of their exact availability may also be limited; if not plain unavailable (again.) They'd need the PB's serial number & method of payment, if they have the discs available I'd get both 10.4 & 10.5. And look online for iLife '05 or other.
If an OS X Tiger Server 10.4.x is older than a retail version which may have shipped with a computer when new, it may not work in that computer. You could try the installer, to see if it would, but it could be rejected, or fail part way into the process. So, in those instances, a retail OS X install DVD of later version is the path to installation, if you can't get the grey original install-restore disc set the computer shipped with. They have part numbers.
The server edition is a bit different than retail Tiger 10.4; you can see some versions of Server 10.4 Tiger as listed in the downloadable freely available MacTracker.ca database that works offline...
    {from  http://mactracker.ca downloaded database OS X Server 10.4 Tiger}
Note the above list ALSO shows PowerPC and Universal for Intel-based Mac.
+System discs that shipped with a Mac, be it PPC or Intel, do not interchange.
The company welovemacs seems to have a similar Server version Tiger 10.4 with like product number and it does not say it can't work on specific PowerPC Macs (there is an Intel version, won't work in PPC) so for comparison here is there link: http://www.welovemacs.com/m9769za.html
Server versions of OS X can run in machines the standard one can, with a few exceptions in hardware; or in situations where the OS X version is older than the computer, so compatibility with hardware is lacking. In some cases, the installer may work OK, but would need additional Software Update to fully work, so the Combo update 10.4.11 may help.
There are some applications that may be missing from a retail or server edition of Tiger (or Leopard, etc) that would have been included in the computer's original as-shipped system and backup restore/install DVDs. The iLife applications would be on a separate retail disc set, a later iLife version than shipped with Tiger in a computer may be used in Tiger; to a limit. There (or was) a Support article on vintage iLife versions and OS X system they were supported in. Some bookmarks fail and links have changed, content moved or removed.
Several PowerBook 1.67GHz models exist, some shipped with Tiger 10.4.2 variants on their own DVDs so the Tiger Server would likely need to be later than 10.4.3 to work. But it would be worth a try, if you have it. Could be it may install (or not) but if it does, it may run in SafeBoot, and accept update to 10.4.11 Combo. Or you may be looking for a different installation DVD.
There may be a way around this, if you have a second Mac that can use the Tiger Server, and use it to install into the PowerBook, in Target Disk Mode, and see if it can accept the Combo update, then boot up. Not sure if this idea would even work. Been awhile and my target disk and firewire experiences are rusty!
    Not sure if this helps...
    Good luck

  • How can I install OSX Tiger from a DVD if my iBook G3 600mhz only has a CD?

I just purchased this iBook for my wife as a starter laptop for her as I love Macs and iBooks and I know she will be better off with one than the HP laptop she has. It is in pristine condition. The only problem is that the iBook is loaded with OS X 10.1.4 which is outdated and needs an upgrade. I found my old Tiger DVD and wanted to upgrade but the iBook only has a CD drive. I do not have an external DVD drive or such. What can I do? Can I copy the info off of the DVD onto a Pen Drive? Any suggestions? Please help. Thank you so much!

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
If you want to run Mac OS X 10.4, you need to upgrade the iBook's RAM. Mac OS X 10.4 requires a minimum of 256 MB of RAM:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1514?viewlocale=en_US
Although a 128 MB module would get the iBook up to the minimum required by Mac OS X 10.4, I strongly recommend that you maximize the RAM with a 512 MB RAM module. It takes a 144-pin, 3.3 V, PC100 or PC133 compliant, 1.25 inch SDRAM SO-DIMM.
Instructions for adding the RAM can be found in this Apple Knowledge Base article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=111918
Once you get the RAM upgraded, you can attach the iBook G3 to your iBook G4 with a FireWire cable and use the iBook G4's optical drive to upgrade the iBook G3 with Mac OS X 10.4 (assuming that you have the full retail DVD, and not an upgrade DVD or one that came with another Mac).
Instructions for doing that can be found in these two articles:

  • Installing OSX on 2 drives

    HELLO ALL...
tried to find an answer to this seemingly easy question...can i install OSX Tiger on 2 internal hardrives....is it not recomended to have 2 internal boot drives...what is the best way to handle this...i was having trouble with kernel panics so i decided to put a fresh copy of tiger on my second internal drive...everything seems fine so far...but will i have problems...? thanx in advance...who wants some points...?

I just purchased a used PowerMac G4 with OS tiger installed. I removed th hard drive from my PowerMac G3 and installed it into the G4, using the second connection on the flat cable going to the internal drive in the G4. The just installed hard drive was the G3 only drive and contains that computers OS 9 system. OS X tiger works fine and if I open OS 9 applications the classic OS 9 destop opens and opens the programs and documents located on the former G3 hard drive with out any issues. I have had some small issues with items not supported by classic but now I am not able to print to my Cannon iP5000 with dependable success and no duplexing at all on that printer. I have downloade new drivers from the Cannon site but no luck there also. I would like to boot up in OS 9 but when I go to start-uo disk in OS 10 my OS 9 hard drive is not vissible and likewise only the OS X drive is vissible using the hold option key on start-up. You have both partitioned and have multiple drives with different systems, can you help me with this start-up problem?

  • OSX Tiger on Blue and white G3 tower

    Hi All
I've recently acquired two old PowerMac G3 computers - the blue and white towers. I've managed to install OSX Tiger on one of them (and it's working fine) but am struggling with the other. Either the PowerMac doesn't recognise the disc at all or once it restarts from the install DVD, it hangs - acouple of times, it's actually shut down instead. Is there a way of remote installing OSX Tiger onto the G3 as I keep hitting problems when trying to install direct?

How did you erase the Drive? Was it on an Itel/10.6 Mac, if so it's likely GUID format that the G3 cannot read, it needs to be APM.
    How to format your disks...
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/partitioning_tiger.html
(To Install OSX on an IntelMac the Drive it needs the GUID Partitioning scheme mentioned at the bottom.)

  • OSX Tiger on OSX Leopard using Parallels?

Hello everyone, I hope this question/issue has not been posted before as I have been unsuccessful in finding an answer to my dilemma as yet so here goes. I have a new MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo, 2.4gig running Leopard 4.5.1. I just bought a new Epson Large format Printer, Epson Stylus Pro 7800. The MBP did not see the printer driver and so I downloaded and installed the latest driver from Epson that does work with the printer. The driver does not support all of the functionality the printer is capable of however (thanks for nothing Epson). So here is my question; Is there a way to install OSX Tiger using Parallels. I am hoping that I could do all of my pre-print editing in Leopard and then when it is time to print, switch to Tiger and use the Epson print driver (written for Tiger) there, to access all of the printer's functionality.
Can Tiger be loaded on my new MacBook Pro using Parallels?
Thank you in advance for any assistance that you can provide.
    Best wishes

Try to install Bonjour and it will help you see your printer in Parallels, OR install a generic printer driver for an epson XXXX similar to yours. Hope that helps a little bit. You DON'T want to run two MacOSs since this would screw up your hard drive installation.
Another way is to install a Bootcamp version of Windows, create your stuff on the mac and then boot to windows, print using their driver, I have had to do that until the Samsung people came up with a version of the driver within Leopard!! I TOLD Leopard to install the Samsung printer drivers, I also saw that there were drivers for epson printers too!!
