Re-using a clip

Can anyone help here? I am trying to overlay clips using Slick 4 Mattastic.I want to use different parts of clips as the overlay at different points. After using part of a clip for this I cannot reuse a different part of the clip further on over the base clip, it always seems to revert to the first edited part of the overlay clip even after restoring it and re-editng it. Paste over is not suitable as it can't be faded in and out and as the background clip is a piece of music simply cutting and inserting isn't what I want as the transitions will cut part of the sound track. This is easy in Final Cut where I first started this project but it makes a mess of some other media types which iMovie handles well hence reverting to iMovie. Exporting from FC via Quicktime Pro works but then has to be re-converted back to wide screen - very time consuming.
Any advice will be gratefully received.

You are taking a 720x486 clip, and blowing it up to 6 times the size, and trying to retain some semblance of quality...YES the MM will take 16 hours. It takes time to do this. Want to cut this time? Get an HD capture card and capture the footage via the card, upconverting it as you capture. Then the process is real time.
Top end machine or not, you are asking a lot, and it will take time. This isn't a 10 second or 2 minute clip...it is nearly an hour long.

In FCPX, how do I use multiple clips of the same event?

This is a beginner question, but having recently moved from Final Cut Express to FCPX, I am having trouble using 3 clips (church play, 3 cameras) of the same event (and reading through the manual has not helped me). I have lined them up in the timeline, one "on top" of the other, but the viewer only shows the top clip. I would like to see what the other clips look like and use the cutting tool and opacity (which I found) to choose the best view (and move between the clips lined up with the audio). It feels like I am trying to use an old work flow on a new product. How do I view the all the clips and move between them?

Here is one of those free tutorials (in two parts), which , IMO, is particularly good.
There is also, of course, more comprehensive paid training available that may better fit your needs.

Using video clips with my ipod

I am working on a project that requires me to use video clips on my ipod(I have a video ipod). I would like to divide each clip(about 10-20 seconds each) into approximately 10 categories. There would be about 100-200 clips in all. I would like to be able to view these clips on my ipod and that they be organized on my ipod into these 10 categories for easy browsing. The categories and the clips would ideally all have names attached to them. My question is: Is this possible, if it is, how do I go about doing this?

Well that would explain why you cannot add them to your Nano.
Try using a program such as Handbrake or MPEG-Streamclip to convert these clips to more friendly formats. I have had the best results with these two utilties.

After using Merge Clips in CS6, the resulting file now has two audio tracks

Hey guys,
I'm running into a weird problem after using the Merge Clips option. I have my video and audio selected, I've already moved the audio so they're both synced. It looks like this:
Then I use Merge Clips and pull the new file into a new sequence which in turn looks like this:
I checked the audio channels for both and apparently the merged file separated the left and right audio channels into two separate streams as opposed to using the single stream for both channels like the original.
Anyway to prevent it from doing this?

At the very bottom they list limitations, one of which being "Merged clip audio results in mono track audio only."
Which I was familiar with before posting this. It doesn't seem however that the two tracks are mono it looks like they are two separate stereo tracks. If I mute one I still get audio in both speakers even though I muted the "right" track.
Here's what they look like in the audio mixer
The original only has the left most track.
I guess the only thing to do is just deal with it or render out each clip uncompressed to have that single audio channel.

Using the Clip function of an AP-Element

This is a follow up question to my previous post asking about
opening external links within my site.
After taking some good advice on embedding the image in an
HTML doc on my site and then calling this page from the navigation
bar.......I'm now on the trail of embedding the image in an
AP-Element so I can then do my RHS or LHS justification using the
clip function. In principle I've had it working once on my exisitng
home page, but as soon as I try creating a new Doc and embedding
the AP-element the clipping fails to work. If I clip the LH corner
of the image it diplays correctly in the designer window, but as
soon as I go to the browser preview it reverts back to an unclipped
version of the image.
This is what I'm doing:-
1) I create a blank new document
2) I then add an AP Element by Insert|Layout Object|AP Div
3) I then resize this to a reasonable size on the page and
then insert an image
4) I then click on the AP-element border and go to the Clip
property and set up to clip the LH corner of the image
When I then look at the designer window, it correctly shows
the clipped LH corner as expected. But as soon as I preview it in
the browser it reverts back to the full size image.
Any guidance would be most greatfully received.

Tell us again why you are clipping the image, please?
Also, AP elements cannot interact with any other elements on
the page
because the fact that they are absolutely positioned removes
them from the
normal flow. So, if you are seeing movement that you
interpret in this way,
you are not interpreting it correctly - most likely you have
other issues on
the page. Finally, editable regions are NOT layout regions -
they are
content regions. If you are seeing 'editable region' issues,
then look to
your page's code and the HTML infrastructure there, not at
your template
region markup.

Using HDV clips from Final Cut in a 4:3 iMovie Timeline

I'm trying to use HDV clips in a standard def, 4:3 iMovie file. I export them as full quality QT clips out of my FCP timeline - to the desktop - then when I drag them into my iMovie file - they squish instead of letterboxing. I've tried everything but can't get it to work. Some clips import with the letterbox and others import anamorphic style. Very strange.
It looks like iMovie likes the .dv file extension - but I can't get that with the QT clips I make in FCP - when I use DVStream as an export the quality goes way down. I also tried converting them in Quicktime - but that isn't working. Any ideas?
Again - just trying to keep my 16:9 clips in 16:9 and not squishing them to be 4:3. I'd be happy getting my QT clips from FCP to be .dv files even.....

It looks like iMovie likes the .dv file extension
Yes, a correctly 4:3 or 16:9 flagged .dv imports best and most predictably to iMovie
when I use DVStream as an export the quality goes way down.
Of course there is downscaling when converting HD to plain lower res DV. Also remember that QT Player by default shows low-res preview of .dv -- you have to turn on HQ display to see all quality.

Audio on the timeline, especially stream, tends to play very reliably. Is this project under any NDA or can you provide a FLA to examine? Let me know if you want to private message it and I'll shoot you a message.
What version of Flash Player are you targeting and is this AS2 or AS3?

Just curious as to why it's coming up as a copyright violation?
Hard to say. I think FaceBook errs on the side of abundance caution when they detect anything that sounds like music.
It's also possible to that people use samples of various pieces of iLife audio contest to create a piece of work that they then copyright.

I know there is the duplicate frame function that will show you if you put a clip (frames) into the timeline twice, but is there anything in the browser that shows a mark next to a clip that
indicates you've used that clip in the timeline already...so you know before you put it in again?

That is not a feature of the iPhone (or of any phone I've ever had). It seems to be a Nokia thing as it's always past users of Nokia phones who ask about it. With my carrier, there is a beep at the end of every ring it the person is already on the call but no indication on the phone itself.

If you have I/O marked in the viewer or the timeline only that section will get exported.

OK, I decided to upgrade to Mavericks. 1st I checked to see if Parallels 8 woudl work w it. It said yes, but upgrade parallels 8 1st so I did that (& then realized I should update virus def & run Windows updates also. Don't use it very much 180 days ago it said).
Then saw some reports of mail not working so well so decided to clean out a lot of un-needed emails on my Mac. Also ran updates to Mountain Lion.
Then closed everything & shut down. Left it off for a few min to clear out any left over electronic garbage & rebooted. Opened App store & clicked the Mavericks free download. Almost immediated it gave me error message & suggested doing it from the Purchased section.
Ok, I tried downloading it there. 2-3 times got same almost immediate error message.
Then, I think it was after disconnecting external HD & printer I tried again & it was looking good w download. It was fluctuating between 40-45 min time remaining & showing almost 500 mb downloaded when I got the error message again.
btw, I also got an error message when running Windows update. There was an unknown error code when I tried updating Service Pack 1 (which it showed I needed, although I'm thinking that is kind of strange since I've had Windows 7 on a MacBookPro since shortly after I bought the original MacBookPro in April 2010. (Spilled water on it last May & Apple store said it would need expensive repair so bought this replacement that they used my Time Machine backups to install everything on. This was right as I was getting ready to move & I haven't yet found the old one to see if maybe it would work. It should be in one of my boxes).
So, if it is having this much trouble just getting it installed I'm kind of afraid to go ahead. Wondering why some report it works fine & a lot of others saying no.
I very frustrated since I just want to be able to have the functionality I had to be able to sync Numbers between my iPad & my Mac.

When i use a clipping mask, my photo loses contrast. Any idea why?

I have one photo in a book that is driving me crazy. When I use my clipping mask, the photo inserts perfectly but loses its contrast and grays out terribly. I can't find any reason and it doesn't happen on any other photo using the same time of masks. Anyone have any ideas?

Can Illustrator snap clipping groups to grid using the clipping path?

I want to be able to snap a clipping group to grid so that the clipping path snaps to the grid, not the masked paths. Is this possible?

Thanks for the replies, however neither is a solution to the problem. I want to make a seamless tessellation pattern using a clipping group as the unit of repetition. No matter what I try, Illustrator does not allow me to "over-ride" the anchor points of the clipping contents in order to snap the clipping path to grid. Of course it can be done manually, but if the clipping mask is an equilateral triangle, for example, and the pattern reflects on all sides of the triangle as it repeats, a manual construction is a hassle. And besides, the whole idea is to use snap-to-grid to guarantee a seamless tessellation.
The solution to the problem would be if Illustrator could treat a clipping path as a crop rather than a mask when snapping to grid.

Edit using proxy clips?

a friend of mine unfamiliar with FCP wondered if you could "edit using proxies" in FCP..
by this he meant to use smaller clips to do the actual editing; clips which a slower/older machine can actually play, then to some how save the editing information, and apply that to the larger/higher quality versions of those very same clips, and if you needed to let it render over night, well, at least you'd have done the human/creative part.
Anyone know about this technique? I have seen something similar in a print environment where lo-rez images are used during the editing/design phase, then swapped out for high-rez when client proofs or film are made.

Not sure it exists with FC but I read that the Sony XD Cam has these files available to use in this way. Other wise here is a solution for low res files from another thread.
