Reader X crashes when user profile redirected to 2nd local disk

This issue is related to, and possibly a duplicate of, the Reader X Folder Redirection issue.  This is with Reader version 10.1.0 on Windows 7.  Reader version 9 works fine, and if we run Reader X in XP compatibility mode it also works fine, but then we lose protected mode operation.
In our Windows 7 deployments, there are two local disks (C: and U:).  For most users the profile is relocated from C: to U: and replaced by a junction point, for example "C:\Users\fred" is really a junction point to "U:\Users\fred". This is part of our user data backup/restore mechanism and a key part of how we manage Windows images for users.  This works well for most applications but we have found that it causes Reader X to crash with a MSVC++ runtime error similar to what others have reported in different circumstances.  Here is what we have observed so far.
1.  Reader X will crash immediately when a user attempts to start it from the desktop or start menu.  Procmon suggests that this crash is related to errors encountered when the application attempts to access the user's temp folder (C:\Users\fred\AppData\Local\Temp) which is really on the U: drive.
2.  Resetting the TEMP and TMP environment variables to "C:\temp" allows the application to launch, but...
3.  Once Reader X is launched, some features will cause it to crash in the same way.  For example displaying preferences causes it to crash immediately (Edit/Preferences in the menu or using the Ctrl-K shortcut).  Procmon suggests this is related to the application trying to access the "C:\Users\fred\AppData\Roaming" folder which is really on the U: drive.
4.  Reader X never crashes and works just fine if the user's profile has not been relocated from the C: drive to the U: drive.  But this only applies to a small fraction of users that we manage.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.  I can provide Procmon traces if that might be helpful.

We were experiencing the same issue.
We solved this by creating a GPO:
First open your GP mangement console, edit the GPO to which this applies. (This is a user GPO, so make sure you are on the user Ou!)
Edit:
User Configuration\Preferences\Drive Maps
Add a new drive mapping, mapped to \\server\share\%username% (in our case we mapped to P:\)
On the Common tab, make sure the "Run in user context" is ticked.
Next create a shortcut (or multiple shortcuts)
Edit:
User Configuration\Preferences\Shortcuts
Add a shortcut to
C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 11.0\Reader\AcroRd32.exe (this is for Adobe Reader XI on Win x64; lookup your local path on the destination machines)
Change the start in to P:\ (the driveletter used in the drive mapping)
On the common tab also make sure this policy runs in the Logged-on user's security context.
This solved all issues at our end and we have this running with Adobe Reader X and XI
If you need to apply this to both Win x32 and x64 machines, you can apply item level targeting and choose the Operating system of choice. (If you add 2 OS'es, like Win 7 and Win 8, make sure that the option is OR and not AND).
good luck

  • Hi, Adobe Reader XI crashes when I try to connect to a pdf online.

Hi, Can anyone help, please? Adobe reader XI crashes when I connect to a pdf online. Pre-saved ones still read correctly. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Adobe Reader, and reset google chrome, but the problem is still there! What can I try next???

Chrome uses its own PDF viewer, not the Adobe Reader plugin; see http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/pdf-browser-plugin-configuration.html

  • Windows Store 8.1 won't open when user profile is redirected to another disk

    Hello,
I bumped into an interesting issue lately.
While trying to redirect my user profile to a separate disk, lets say D, Windows Metro Apps including WinStore stopped from working. They launch and after the initial application screen it minimizes. Pressing the application it comes up for 1-2
seconds and then minimizes again. From what is seems the app did not load anything and it is still on the launch screen.
This is with a domain user.
On the same machine the user that has its profile on C everything works fine.
I tried the same user on a different machine without redirecting its profile (leaving it on its default location C), and everything works fine.
I tried the same thing on at least 5 machines, fresh installed and with nothing else installed and the same thing happened.
I run a few things I found around, wsreset, checkdisk, a command with develomentmode or something like that but no go.
Any one else had the same issue?

    Hi John ,
How did you redirect the profile ?From the properties or something else as the link posted .If it is possible ,please share the exact steps you have done here ,we will make a test .
"This is with a domain user."
Do you mean the local account won`t take the same symptom ?
Considering you have redirected the user profile ,this may result in several issues ,it is not recommended to do this .
Here is a link for reference  :
Relocation of the Users directory and the ProgramData directory to a drive other than the drive that contains the Windows directory
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/949977
"These settings should be used only in a test environment. By changing the default location of the user profile directories or program data folders to a volume other than the System volume, you cannot service your Windows installation. Any updates,
fixes, or service packs cannot be applied to the installation. Microsoft recommends that you do not change the location of the user profile directories or program data folders. This is especially true for Windows Store apps. Changing the location of %programdata%
will cause errors when you install, uninstall, or update these apps. "

  • Reader 11.0.2 crashes when user rt-clicks in the .pdf document

When user right-clicks inside a fillable .pdf (i.e. as if to rt-click/copy or rt-click/paste) she gets the error "Adobe Reader has stopped working.  A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.  Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."  This occurs 100% of the time when right-clicking.  Unfortunately, Windows hasn't notified me of a solution yet...

Per other forum posts, I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling reader and then running EULA.exe and I also disabled Protected Mode.  Problem persists.
It should be noted that Reader also crashes at other (non-right click) times as well, but without knowing exactly when it occurs, I'm unable to isolate those specific reports from the 100's of other reader crash reports in event viewer.  I've asked the user to document the date/time that reader next suffers a (non rt-click) crash.

This is not something I have seen before.  I see that you have already tried various solutions that may prevent crashes, without any result.
The only advice that I have for now is not to right-click, but use standard keyboard shortcuts like Ctrl+C (copy) and Ctrl+V (paste).

Is this still happening to you? We're seeing this issue as well and were wondering if you got a working resolution?

  • Keynote crashes when choosing Profiles (HELP)!

When I choose print and select "Color Matching" then I choose profile and select "other profiles" at this time it always crashes. I notice this after I installed CS5 design premium. It never crash before. Anyway I use a specific profile under the "other profiles" menu and can never get there now because it crashes.
    Thanks!

    The free font manager,
    FontFrenzy
will let you create a backup of your fonts. After that's done, use FontFrenzy to delete half of your fonts, then try a title in PrCS3 again.
If it still crashes, restore your full font collection and this time, delete the other half. Repeat until PrCS3's titler doesn't crash anymore.
Before you do that, though, a good place to start is the "DejaVu Sans" font. Untouched, that font will definitely crash Premiere's titler. I think OpenOffice.org installs it (but I'm not sure). If you use FF to delete it, all of the font forms of DVS won't get deleted. But that's OK, because the remaining varieties of DVS won't crash the titler.
I don't have CS3 readily available, but there's definitely a way to get a Quicktime Desktop project up and running.
If you are getting crashes when you change playback settings, I would try updating your graphics card driver. If necessary, try decreasing the hardware acceleration of the video card using Display Properties.

  • Acrobat Reader X crash when printing

I just stayed up half the night to updated 40 computers from Reader 9.4 to
X (10.0.1) in a Windows 2003 SBS domain. All of them now crash when attempting to print to network
printers (i.e. those installed on a server and shared to the workstations), so I just had to remove X and revert back to 9.4 to get them to print. The problem occurs whether I use the direct download method (via adobe.com) or my distributable copy.
Does anyone know what is happening here?

Turning off Protected mode does resolve the problem immediately, and turning it on again restores the problem. Of cours, this leaves me without a permanent fix, so I am very hesitant to upgrade all the computers again. Is there a fix on the way?
I do not know if this is any help, but here is the content of the appcompt.txt file generated for MS error reporting of the issue.

  • Adobe Reader X crashes when connected to Internet

I have several systems which I've updated to Adobe Reader X.  On *one* of the systems, Reader crashes ~10 seconds after opening it.  This happens whether I open a document or just the application with no document.  Platform is WinXP-32.  There are no error dialogs, the window just goes away.  There's nothing in the WIndows Event log either.
Using sysinternals procmon, it seems to crash when either 1) reading the IE history (why is it doing that?)  2) due to the response it gets over HTTP.
Since I saw network activity, I disabled my internet connection and opened Reader X -- it does not crash!
    I've tried:
         -  deleting my IE history and cookies; didn't help.
         - uninstalling, rebooting, reinstalling
         - removing Adobe folders in %APPDATA% and %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data.
         - disabling the auto update feature
None of which seemed to help.

I've just deployed this to ~250 system an I'm randomly noticing this problem on a number of systems.  It appears to be happinging mostly on the Windows 7 64-bit systems however I'm seeing it on a few Windows XP systems.
I tried disabling networking on one system still with no avail.  It did appear to last a little longer before Adobe Reader X went to Not Responding and then crashed.  Because of that I won't post a packet capture however any more info on this will be great.
UPDATE:  Disabling Protected Mode fixes the problem.  This is accomplished with the following registry key:
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\10.0\Privileged]
    "bProtectedMode"=dword:00000000
This however bypasses the new security features that Adobe Reader X provides for you.  I don't know which is worse disabling it or having people complain about reader not functioning......
For now it looks like 9.x updates is the better corse.

  • Reader XI crashing when printing

    iMac 10,1 running 10.6.8
    Reader 11.0.04
When I try to print out of Reader it crashes everytime. Tried different PDFs, created some, had different people send me some, same result.
Print drivers are up to date. Have tried pitching out the Adobe plist. Completely removed reader from mac reinstalled, same result. Error message was giving generic BAD_EXEC error so no real help there. Finally using FSeventer I was able to track down a temporary file located at /private/var/folders/cI/super_long_random_file_name, Reader was touching this folder everytime I tried to print, and only when I print. Pitched it, viola! Can print. Problem solved you say. Nope, folder comes back, no longer able to print. Just removed this for the 4th time and can't get it to stop, removing last 1-3 days. Any thoughts? Don't want to have to remove that file everyday.

    It is a network Konica/Minolta scan/fax/copy bizhub 200 served through SBS2003 server.
Reader does not seem to print to any of the printers on the network - again, no problems with other programs. This includes Canon and HP printers too.

  • User Profiles Redirection

    Hello!
I have around 30 Terminal Servers in my environment and want to shift the user profiles on all the servers to a single location at my SAN without any cached user profile folders at all Terminal Servers. In this way, if I have to delete user profile of a
specific user, I will not be doing it on every server. Help Required.

    Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server forum.
For migrating User profile you can set folder redirection and specify the location of folder in a user profile.
You can use Group Policy to specify another location (in other words, "redirect" the location) for folders within user profiles. You can redirect folders either to one location for everyone or to different locations based on the security group membership
of users. You can also configure additional settings for the redirected folder. The settings that you can configure include whether to grant exclusive user rights to the folder, move the contents of the folder to the new location, apply redirection policy
to earlier Windows operating systems, or specify system behavior if the policy is removed.
The path of the user profile folder is User Configuration\Policies\Windows Settings\Folder Redirection\UserProfileFolderName
Please check below articles for more information.
Specify the Location of Folders in a User Profile

    Hope it helps!
    Thanks.

  • 2012 R2 DC crashes when user account is renamed using RSAT Tools on Windows 7

    Hello Everyone,
we have a forest and a domain both running in 2003 native mode. We have a mixture of domain controllers running 2003 and 2008 R2 and just recently deployed two new domain controllers running 2012 R2. The 2012 R2s are configured as global catalogs but
do not hold any additional FSMO roles.
Unfortunately we have a very strange issue with the two new 2012 R2 DCs:
We have installed the domain management tools on the 2012 R2 domain controllers. When managing our domain using the locally installed tools on the DCs everything is ok. DSA.MSC shows version 6.3.9600.16384. We also have a number of admin workstations
running windows 7 enterprise 64 bit with service pack 1. We have RSAT tools for windows 7 sp1 (Windows6.1-KB958830-x64-RefreshPkg.msu) installed on these machines. DSA.MSC shows version 6.1.7601.17514. Whenever we try to rename a user account from the win7
computers, the 2012 R2 DC that is targeted shows a message saying that it will reboot within 60 seconds - and then does just that. On the client we see a message saying
"Windows cannot complete the rename operation on <name> because: The server is not operational. Name related properties on this object might be out of sync."
The server logs two errors in the application log:
    1. Event ID 1000, Application Error:
Faulting application name: lsass.exe, version: 6.3.9600.16384, time stamp: 0x5215e25f

    2. Event ID 1015, Source Wininit:
A critical system process, C:\Windows\system32\lsass.exe, failed with status code c0000005.  The machine must now be restarted.
These issues do not occur if we target the admin workstations to use one of our older 2008 R2 DCs. Does anyone have an idea? Any help would be appreciated!
    Regards
    Harry

I would recommend starting with the basic steps described here: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/18513.active-directory-replication-issues-basic-troubleshooting-steps-single-ad-domain-in-a-single-ad-forest.aspx
Once done, please use dcdiag to do health diagnosis on your DCs. If you are running security software on these DCs, I would recommend disabling them temporary for checks.
Also, see that for virus scanning exclusions: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822158/en-us
