Rebuilding Android Folios

Hello, I'm looking for suggestions on workflow for Android 7" tablets. We currently have apps in both iTunes an GooglePlay store (and Amazon). Until now, I had been using the 1024x768 to build folios across all devices. However, we just bought a Google Nexus 7 and downloaded our app only to discover that our folios are unreadable due to the ratio being 4:3 and not 3:2. I would like to rebuild our folios for the Android tablet but since they are already published I'm not certain where to begin.
If i take the "Lazy Susan" approach per Bob's scenario #1 (referencing article "Creating DPS Folios for Android Devices") and reuse my iPad documents and make a 1600x1200 size, would I need to:
1) unpublish and then republish the folio?
2) Is it okay to reuse the the same publication ID?
3) If so, what happens to the Amazon version?
4) Does it matter if I decide to only make a "V" orientation document when it was previously both?
5) Will the user then have to download the "new" folio and delete/archive the previously published folio?
I assume if I choose to either go "Whole Hog" and/or "Sensible Shortcuts", both of these processes would have the same above questions (unpublish/republish, etc.) I'm thinking it's okay to add renditions at this point since it is "sort of" a "new" folio...Is that correct?
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

If you looked at your app on a larger HD Android tablet, you'd be even more disappointed in how your 1024x768 folio looks. It looks like a small stamp in the middle of a black screen. That's the big drawback to the "Lazy Susan" approach, at least for now. (In an upcoming release, Android viewers should be able to scale content up or down. That will simplify matters, and I'll need to revise my guidance.)
1) There is no reason to unpublish/republish the folio. Just create a new 1600x1200 rendition using the same Folio Name, Product ID, and Publication Date settings used in the 1024x768 folio. Of course, the problem to this approach is that 1600x1200 is still 4:3 aspect ratio, which doesn't look great on 16:9-ish devices. Consider creating 1280x800 source files for the Android and repurposing those for each rendition.
2) What do you mean by reusing the same "publication ID"? If you mean using the same Application role/Title ID for iOS and Android, yes you can, but it frequently complicates matters. It's usually easier to create separate accounts (Title IDs) for iOS and Android. If you mean something else by "publication ID," please clarify.
3) The Amazon version should be fine, unless you turned on Strict Renditions (which you don't want to do in your case). Again, I may not understand the question.
4) It's no problem to create a dual-orientation folio for one rendition and a single-orientation folio for another rendition.
5) That's a little tricky. If a user has already opened the app, the viewer registers the 1024x768 rendition and unfortunately doesn't check for a new rendition until the app itself in uninstalled/reinstalled.
Regarding your question about adding renditions at this point, that's perfectly fine. Adding renditions doesn't hurt existing users, and it makes things better for your new users.
The key to success is to make sure that you set up your source files so that they can be imported easily. Most publishers take the "Sensible Shortcuts" route and create different renditions based on two or three sets of source files.

  • Video not appearing in Android folio

    Hi all,
    Strange problem with a web overlay and streaming vid in an Android folio. Here's the story;
Ive placed a web content overlay on a page by itself. When viewed in the Android viewer, the audio track of the video plays, but no video appears.
I can view the video successfully in the tablet's (Xoom) browser. I don't know what the encoding specs are for the video, but it works perfectly on the iPad version of the folio. It also displays properly in the Content Viewer on my laptop.
Mind you, this isnt an inline audio & video -- this is streaming, using a web content overlay. So the "fullscreen" setting work  around doesnt apply that i know.
Thanks in advance for any help!

Confirmed. Avoid web overlay with streaming video for the time being.
Ha. Did more digging around and hit this little nugget. So does this mean what Im trying to do isnt supported? Can a Bob please confirm?

Some of the features that work in the iPad Viewer are not supported in the Android Viewer.

  • Adobe Content Viewer v22 for Android - folio update issue

Yesterday I updated our Xoom to Android 4.1.1 and updated the Adobe Content Viewer to v22.  Both we and a client have had issues with not seeing the "Update Available" message for folios that are been updated.  The "Updating Library..." message flashes briefly at the top of the viewer in library mode, however nothing changes.  It's only after killing the app and restarting that it takes its time while checking the library for updates and finds them.  Has anyone else had this issue?  The iPad rendition of the same folio has been showing update messages in the usual, almost instantaneous, way.
Has anyone else had difficulty with updating folios in the Android v22 Adobe Content Viewer?  In the past couple of versions I've noticed some strangeness with the Sign In/ Sign Out part of the library where it seems like the text tells you you're signed in, but sometimes you have to sign out and sign back in to get updates.  Sometimes you could go back to the home screen and then go back into the app and it would trigger a check for updates as well, however that trick doesn't seem to be working anymore.
    Andrew

Thank you for the reply Himanshu.  Evidently the problem is much worse than I thought because previously created apps don't even open anymore!
None of the apps we have published to the Android app store are getting past the splash screen.  The library flashes briefly on some of them before the app crashes.  The error message it gives is "Unfortunately, ____ has stopped."  This is a big problem!!  Will updating the apps to v22 solve this issue?  When will Adobe have this major problem fixed?
I'm flashing back to June of last year when reliability of basic functionality (like apps opening and folios being downloadable/viewable) was still unpredictable.  You Adobe guys and gals have got to figure out how to make the DPS system dependable.  I understand this is an operating system conflict, but surely you knew this update was coming and could test how well your software would hold up to the changes.  This isn't a barely used minor feature that isn't working, this is something that makes users uninstall the app and lessens their opinion of the company that released it.  Please make this your top priority and get it fixed today.  We and our customers are paying for a much higher level of service than this.

  • Issues with rendering shadows and gradients in Android folios

Does anyone have experience or solutions as to how to fix a problem with gradient feathers, transparency and drop shadows in Android renditions/folios?
In the iPad rendition (1024x768), there are several scrollable frames, multi-state objects etc. with transparencies and gradients. When this is viewed on Android devices, whether the iPad rendition or Android specific renditions, it renders the transparencies, gradients and drop shadows as a white tone and isn't rich in any way.
Is this a known problem or is there a way around this?

    Hi Dave,
    Here's the screenshots for you.
    iOS
    Nexus 7
    Samsung Galaxy Tab
On this one in particular, it's the gradient feather on the bottom (they are scrollable frames), and the 'i' and 'contents' buttons in the top right.
    Thanks,

  • Adobe DPS Android - Folio Size Best Practice

    Hey everyone,
we designed a magazine for iPad and now want to bring it over to Android. A little bit of research and it seems, that the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7' is one of the most popular tablets. Second to that is the 10' Samsung Galaxy tab.
The problem I know have is, for which resolution I should re-do my magazine to work on most android devices.
I read about it (http://blogs.adobe.com/indesigndocs/2012/10/creating-dps-folios-for-android-devices.html), but still would be happy to hear from you guys regarding the following things:
Would it be wise do set a new folio size 1280x800 (to cover the 10')? I think it will be automatically scaled down to 7' on smaller tablets, right?
Or is it the better approach to work with an addiotional folio size 1024x600 to target the most popular tablet with 7'. As I recall correctly, the content will not be enlarged on larger tablets like 10', right?
What if I have a retina-Android-Device. Does the folio automatically scales up like on iPad?
Personally I would think that approach 1 is the one which makes most sense. content will be displayed fine on 10' and 7' with content slightly smaller on 7' (just like iPad retina and iPad mini).
    What do you guys think?
    Thanks a lot in advance!
    florian

We starting to test publish to Android. Our 1024x786 PDF iPad edition is showing OK on content viewer for android. There is black boarders, but with pich and zoom, it's perfectly viewable. HTLM and web content works fine. We simply don't have the time to recreate folios at various sizes. So our solution works for us.

  • Renditions or Single Folio for Native Android?

I am not sure what the best strategy is for native Android folios. Should I build a single folio at 1280x800 or renditions at 1280x800, 1920x1200, and 2560x1600 as described in Digital Publishing Suite Help | Setting up renditions for native Android viewers?
Do I need three sizes of graphics (as describe in the Android developers docs) if I use the renditions?
    Thanks,
    Joe

It doesn't matter what size graphics you use. We will resample them to 108ppi for the folio size you pick. 1280x800 is a fine size to use for Android.

  • Help required - "Failed to download the folio to your local disk"

    Hi
    (Warning: first time poster :-)
I am having difficulty downloading my published folio. Over the last 24hrs I repeatedly get the following error (after a long wait with status “Preparing content for download...”) on different computers (Mac/PC) and browsers:
An error has occurred while exporting the folio
Failed to download the folio to your local disk
My first version is being delivered to an Android app (created using the Viewer Builder) and was embedded into an iOS app (also created using the View Builder).  This all worked without any problems and I can export this now.
To optimize the folio for the new iPad I decided to use the PDF option which required me to rebuild the folio again.  The content is identical bar a couple of dates changed from 2011 to 2012.  I just need to export the folio so I can embed it into an updated iOS app.  The folio will not be (at this stage) delivered to the Android app.
I hope somebody can help :-)
    Andrew
Edit: Using the new Adobe Content Viewer I see TWO versions of folio - one with the blue lightening bolt - but maybe that is normal?

    Hi Andrew,
can't help unfortunatly, but I get the same error when trying to download a retina display folio using a normal dps account. Download is "prepared" for about 5 minutes after which I get the error message:
An error has occurred while exporting the folio.
Failed to download the folio to your local disk.
    [downloadIssueFailed]
However, normal resolution folios can be exported and exporting a retina folio from a professional DPS account works.
    Best greetings,

  • Folio not updating on iPad content viewer

Anyone else had this problem? I've made several changes to the folio yet on my iPad it doesn;t say there's an update available. I 'archived' the folio to try and get it back but it's just hidden for good now. I deleted the app and re-installed and all the other folios appear except this one.
Not sure what to do short of re-uploading everything to a new folio...

my solution to this was to rebuild the folio. annoying.

  • Error downloading folio to iPad via Content Viewer

    Hello,
I'm having issues getting the folio to download to the Adobe Content Viewer for iPad app . . . every time I get this message "Error downloading folio. Please try again later."
    I've built a single-app folio:
    1024x768
    Viewer version: 20
    Orientation: Horizontal
    PDF format
Adobe InDesign CS6 with the latest folio tools and builder
The folio consists of a single article with one page that contains two video files (two thumbnails that play full screen when activated)
    OSX 10.8.2
I have both an iPad 2 and iPad 3rd generation that I have Adobe Content viewer on (latest version, iOS 6)
I've tried deleting the Content Viewer app and re-downloading a fresh version, I've tried completely rebuilding the folio from scratch, I've also created a new Adobe user name with a fresh account to try the folio with . . . and every time it uploads fine with no errors . . . . but refuses to download to the iPad.
Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong or what I should try??

Doesn't sound like you are doing anything wrong at all. It could be due to some performance problems on our servers that are creating problems downloading large files. Here are a few things that you could try:
If the folio is not already published, try publishing it as private. Downloads of published folios are often quicker.
Try creating two articles each having one video. Downloading two smaller files is typically better than downloading one large file.
If that still doesn't work, you can share the folio with [email protected] and I'll be glad to take a look.

  • Publishing an Android app - How can I find my Integrator ID?

    Hi,
I want to publish an Android version of my app, and I've read all the links that tell you how but there really isn't any step by step instructions if you run into any trouble.
I'm using the online app builder and it's asking my for my Integrator ID. Where do I get that? It says ask an Adobe representative but what's there email Adobe's website doesn't make it easy to find contact info to get in touch with someone.
How to you create certificates?? Can you use the same certificates you created for your iPad version??
Also are there any step by step instructions of videos that show you how to create an Android??  (I know Apple has a complete guide)
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Michelle

Whatever you see in your .apk right now is what your readers will see after they download it from Google Play.
Yes, new account and password just for your Android folios. You'll log into Folio Producer with that and just see whatever folios you choose to put in that account. Your new account and password for the Android folios should be created under your master account (i.e. log into your master account and add a new user to it, and grant that new user the Application role).

  • V26 Folios

    Hello,
hoping someone can answer this for me.
We currently have 2 Adobe ID's set up for our publication, for when we publish. 1 for iPhone/iPad, and another for Android. So that we can view the analytics properly.  We would usually name our folio's as: "PublicationName_iPhone" & "PublicationName_iPad" etc.
Now that V26 is out, could we just use 1 Adobe ID and name the folios with: _iPad / _iPhone / _Android ?
The reason I ask is because it would be so much easier to just copy the "iPad" folio when its complete, to the "Android" folio, instead of having to log into the Android Adobe ID and re-upload everything.
Am I correct in thinking that this would work?
    please advise!
    Thank you.

    Thanks for your comment Bob.
I have another question.  I am trying to load my new V26 folio into Adobe Content viewer.  It says that the App needs to be updated in order to be viewed.  the actual message i get when trying to view my folio in ACV is "Please update your app" - This issue is available for download, but requires a newer version of the app. Please update your app.
Do I have to recreate my viewer app? and resubmit to apple for approval?
    any help is certainly appreciated.
    thank you.

  • Analytics fulfillment report Folio ID

This seems such an obvious question that I'm sure I've overlooked the answer somewhere. But I've searched and can't find it.
In the downloaded fulfillment report generated by the DPS Professional Edition analytics page there is a column labeled "Folio ID." The contents of this column are long hexidecimal strings that apparently have a one-to-one relationship to the individual renditions published for each edition.
The question is, which is which? We can make some educated guesses (for example, largest number of Folio IDs will be iPad downloads). But it would be really helpful to know which represents our iPad, iPhone, or Android folios.
Anyone know how to connect the dots here?

Thanks, Bob. I appreciate it. I've also asked the client to check with Adobe Support.
The remaining metadata columns -- publication account, account ID, publication title and issue number -- contain identical information for all of the renditions for each issue. The only variable fields are the folio ID, the download dates, and the fullfilments.

  • Reducing folio size

    Hi all,
I am struggling to reduce the folio size of an app, and need to better understand why this is. I need to be able to explain to my client why reducing the size of the images has not made a difference - as this logically makes no sense.
I have created renditions for the iPad, Android and iPhone. It is quite an image-heavy folio, so the size for all 3 devices is  large (my client has complained that it is too large, as users are expereiencing problems with the download).
I contacted Adobe and was advised to reduce the size of the images for each device. I changed the resolution to 72ppi, and saved for web as jpg with medium/high compression. I also uploaded the folio as PDF, hoping this would keep the size small.
However, compared to before editing the images, the iPad and iPhone folios reduced by a mere 2MB, and the Android folio even increased! This just does not make any sense to me, and if I don't understand why this is, I won't be able to explain it to my client either.
I'd appreciate a logical explanation, and perhaps some advice on how to reduce the folio size (in addition to the image size reduction and uploading it as a PDF folio).
If someone could reply to this soonest so I can get back to my client with a satisfying answer, that would be much appreciated. THANKS!!!

Image/Video Optimization is all about compromising with logical thinking and testing employed. In both cases - image and video - there is amount of information that is compressed into the file. The more informative (more detailed, larger size) the image is the less it could be compressed and the bigger you will get the file.
If there is a video in the folio then you need to optimize it first as videos are much more hungry for the size.
To make image smaller several things could be done:
    - you may choose less informative picture, e.g. empty swimming pool vs crowded one;
    - you may crop different/smaller part of the original picture;
    - some effects like when one part of the picture focused and the rest is foggy or grainy picture will also reduce the size;
    - replace background for less busy one, e.g. put the image behind the window ( the plain wall around the window is not that informative, isn't it? );
    - lower the quality of the image until it's on the borderline after which it becomes unacceptable;
    - prioritize your images - make some of them smaller pixel wise, some with better quality then the average through the folio and some with less, and some replace with less informative alternative image that could fit for the purpose even better, and some excessively used just delete.
Image is a 3D object as each 2D pixel of it has the 3rd coordinate - color. So the less bits are used to code the color the smaller the image. Also the more areas with the same color the better the compression: if we reduse1000x1000 pixels photo quality image to 500x500 ( 4 times ) and then enlarge it back to 1000x1000 we will get each 1 pixel of 500x transformed to 4 pixels of the same color.
Now you just need to test the settings to get the quality-size borderline for each or most of your images. I would start with the new empty folio and add one of your average images to it - this will allow you to compare size of the optimized image to the size of the folio file and get the idea of the folio format overhead and possible  transformation to the image. You may also look into article's articlename.folio file - it's just a plain zip file with all the images inside, so rename it to articlename.folio.zip and open.
Here you can also read Google's recommendations:
    https://developers.google.com/speed/articles/optimizing-images
Plus as always you may search DPS/web for more info.

  • Multi folio app problem

I created a multi folio app, but my folios are not being displayed in my app. What should I do to correct this problem?

    Hi,
I think I've managed to find you in our system and here is the cause of the problem
You have created an iOS viewer and an Android viewer each associated with a different Adobe ID, also known as Application ID. However, the only folios you have published appear to be under the DPS Master account.
The Master account is not meant to be used for publishing, if anything it should only be used the very first time to set up delegate accounts (Admin, App Builder and Application roles).
Your folios needs to be published respectively under their own Adobe IDs or Application accounts.
If you have 2 different viewers, the Android folios should be under the Adobe ID you’ve selected for your Android viewer and your iOS folio under the Adobe ID you’ve selected for your iOS viewer.
The guide Neil provided is a good starting point, I would just add the following link to get a better understanding of all types of accounts:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/digital-publishing-suite/help/account-administration-tool.html
    Hope that helps.
