Recent exchange upgrade, worse performance

We recently (last week) had an upgrade to ADSL2+ on our exchange. All went smoothly. At first, it looked like we'd be getting pretty impressive results. Unfortunately, it seems that all we are doing is rushing to a roadblock and we get worse average performance than we did on ADSLMAX. We've left it a week to settle down and the numbers have been pretty consistent since the first couple of days.
Basically, we seem to be getting up to 18Mbps in the wee hours, but during normal times of day, it seems to average out at about 2-4Mbps, which is worse than the 6Mbps we used to get. Upload speed is better though. Used to get about 384kbps, now it's a gnats under 1Mbps and solid at that.
Here are the numbers from the router:
Connection tmie      3 days 14h
Downstream                         21.73Mbps
Upstream                             1.152Mbps
Noise margin (D/U)                2.6dB/6.0dB
Line attenuation (D/U)           8.1dB/5.4dB
Output power (D/U)              19.8dBm/12.4dBm
FEC events (D/U)                   2283042/69
CRC events (D/U)                   130/4
LOF                                      0
LOS                                      0
LOP                                      0
HEC events (D/U)                   848/8
Error seconds (Local/Remote)   293/5
Would welcome thoughts from the community, and my own personal VPN
TFL

OK, just tried the test, basic figures just over 6Mbps down, just under 1Mbps up, tried the troubleshooting but it crashed with a server error (hence the vauge numbers).
Just tired a few using Ookla, download speeds range from 8 down to 3Mbps, upload pretty solid around the 0.92Mbps number (which seems fine and consistent with the signalling rate - i.e. not contention limited).

Will try some more tests when I get home (again) tomorrow morning. I predict speeds will be consistent and towards the top end of what I have already seen to date, namely up around 18Mbps.
TBH, while it's nice to have a big headline number, I'd be much happier with a lower but stable one like I used to get before the "upgrade".

  • (Another) Recent Exchange Upgrade - Slow Speeds

Since my exchange was upgraded 9 days ago, I have had diabolical (less than 1meg) download speeds.
I appreciate the time to settle down can be up to 10 days, but my speed seems to be getting worse, not better.
I don't have a Hub, I'm using a d-link DSL-G624T wireless router so I can't post any stats (don't know how) but I have run the speed tester, and my results are as follows :
Download speedachieved during the test was - 317 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speedsis 4000-21000 Kbps.
     Additional Information:
     Your DSL Connection Rate :11261 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 1114 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 9000 Kbps
The throughput of Best Efforts (BE) classes achieved during the test is - 19.53:32.7:47.88 (SBE:NBEBE)
These figures represent the ratio while sententiously passing Sub BE, Normal BE and Priority BE marked traffic.
I have a feeling something is not right, and don't have a lot of confidence that it will be OK by day 10 (tomorrow).
Can anyone give me any advice or words of reassurance ?
    Many thanks !

  • Recent exchange upgrade brings intermittent cut ou...

I had some speed issues about a year ago and some very nice members here arrangd for my "noise margin" to be reset ,more than doubling the best speed I had previousely had . my new speed was consistently (2-3 tests weekly) delivering 4.5mb and this speed was recorded regardless of time of day etc. this speed remained the "norm " for several months, then sometime last year somewhere between october/november ,I got a letter from BT saying the local exchange was to be treated to an upgrade ,and that I should expect a modest increase in speed .  but within a week of the upgrade the only increase in speed was very small .01 mb if that .
I  did notice however that shortly after the upgrade i started getting broadband disconnections , with a homehub2 ,the top (power) and bottom (wireless) lights remaining blue ,the broadband light would go out completely briefly ,then sit on solid orange for a minute ,then to flashing orange before returning back to solid orange then blue . this happens without warning and at no fixed time of day , somedays 3-4 times other days no problem.
before the "upgrade" I had never "ever" had my router cut off unless for a power cut or "me" accidently hitting the wrong wall switch . my PC  , router ,wiring /phone setup is exactly the same as its been for the past 2 + years .
as of about a month ago ,my broadband suddenly drops by .5 mb and is consistently , when tested returning 3.88 down / .80 up. I emailed BT and got the "chapter and verse" lets go through the same old test procedeur again . I had already performed a reset of the hub . and the direct connection at the socket  etc . the BT line enters my home directly into a nte5 box , 1 filter and the broadband router /1 phone line connected at that point . and "yes" i have tried without the phone connected. Also quiet test ,OK
so let us look at the facts :
Me , happy as a pig in sh*%,  good, consistantly high(for my area)broadband , with no cut offs. ..Great.
BT upgrades the local exchange ,with a promise of better performance (modest)
the broadband cut offs start , never happened before ,and nothing (I repeat Nothing has changed within my home)
shortly after , my broadband speed that has been consistantly delivering 4.5mb , drops to 3.88/9 , no slow intermittent speed fluctuations ,an instant drop from one speed to the other ,
I have monitored the new speed , and it now remains steady and consistent at the new lower "1/2mb less" rate .
I upgraded to BTs unlimited package expecting to have the top speed my line supports ,consistently , BT has proven my line supports the higher rate , so why has it been lowered , I have been told that BT does not cap speeds , but if there were any other reason ,i would expect an inconsistant (jumping from high to low ) speeds , the fact that it was so consistantly good before and then just drop by a fixed amount and has been a couple of weeks 100% consistent at the new lower speed is very suspicious .
does anyone here know what is going on .
I feel a change of provider coming on , I have been faithful to BT since my first phone , and I dare say ,the customer services with other providers are not as good , but "what the hell"  I feel i am not getting what i am paying for , why not pay less .

with respect ,this problem appears nothing like the last time , my speeds were all over the place then ,and the router was resetting its connection speed, and I lost the phone line too, it turned out to be a fault created by a BT worker a few hundred yards down the road from my property .
this time The phone line is fine ,even when the broadband is off , the problem behaviour is more consistent , from the way it cuts off to the duration it takes to come back on and the sequence of the lights flashing etc.
also the speed has been constant at the higher rate for several months , being tested at several times during the day/night.  yet since dropping (just over half a MB ) its now consistent (for several weeks ) at the new lower speed .
details of router ADSL stats are below ,and BT speedtester readout below that :
    ADSL line status
    Connection information
    Line state Connected
    Connection time 0 days, 14:58:09
    Downstream 4,761 Kbps
    Upstream 956 Kbps
    ADSL settings
    VPI/VCI 0/38
    Type PPPoA
    Modulation ITU-T G.992.3
    Latency type Interleave
    Noise margin (Down/Up) 3.2 dB / 5.5 dB
    Line attenuation (Down/Up) 51.0 dB / 28.8 dB
    Output power (Down/Up) 0.0 dBm / 12.9 dBm
    BT Speedtest
    Download Speed (mbps): 3.89
    Upload Speed (mbps) :  0.71
    Ping Latency (ms)  :  56.25
you will see the noise margin is actually quite good.
i fully understand that speeds can alter ,depending on time of day , etc ,but the regular speedtests i have performed and the way that the speed was the same (within a few kb) for months and then drop ,and now maintain a new lower speed night and day consistently for several weeks with no noticeable sudden fluctuations, along with the wierd behaviour of the random restarts , point to something being faulty somewhere . can a router play up this way maybe? it is a couple of years old now .
the restarts appear to happen more in the late evening ,though I am online more then anyway , often when it happens it will happen 2-3 times within an hour , and then it may go several days befor doing the same again .
the light sequence is allways the same , only the broadband light goes out ,phones are fine and unaffected.
first the broadband light goes out ,then it goes full steady orange for a a short while ,then flashes for maybe 30secs or so before going steady orange again and after a short while back to blue .
once or twice lately it has stayed on flashing orange for more than 10 minutes , if I disconnect the router and recconnect ,it starts up fine .

Recent software upgrades has changed the way my iPhone syncs with my macbook and items entered on my iPhone are no longer uploaded to my macbook. I've tried to fix it and seem to have made things worse, my iPhone now has a long list of calanders that I don't want and can't delete and nothing is uploading to my macbook.

You need to look at Mac's iTunes, check  > System Preferences > iCloud.
If you use iCloud for Calendar, Contacts then turn off those items in iTunes, Info tab with your iPhone connected and selected.

  • My exchange has recently been upgraded to ADSL2 - ...

    Hello,
I signed up for BT Total Broadband just over a year ago and I was connected at 8,128 Kbps on ADSL Max because that was the best my exchange offered.  However, according to Sam Knows, my exchange has recently been upgraded to ADSL2.  I tried running the line speed test for my phone number on the BT Broadband signup page and it now estimates my line speed would be 19Mb.  I tried restarting my home hub but it just reconnected at 8,128 Kbps with G.992.1 Annex A.  Is there anything I need to do to get the faster speed? Or is it just a case of waiting and it will happen automatically at some point?
I'm quite happy with my connection but obviously the faster speed would be great
    Thanks for any help!

  • Exchange upgrade causing issues with internal wiri...

Recently our exchange was upgraded to accommodate bt infinity and at the same time our broadband started playing up. we called bt and I spent 1.5 hours checking and re checking equipment with the call center. Tests were done with the hub at either end of the internal wiring. All the tests were still showing faults even with hub connected to the test socket. They asked me to leave connected for 24 hours while they monitor the line. They promised to call me back which they did not. I called them again the following day to be told I should have left the hub in the test socket which I was not told the previous day. I then had to wait 48 hours while they monitored the line this time in the test socket. All the tests still showed the fault was still there so an engineer called out.
The hub was still in the test socket when engineer arrived and the first thing he did was hook up his test equipment to the test socket and he stated there and then that there was nothing wrong with the line but it had been throttled down. 2 minute phone call and 10 minutes later broadband was back and working perfectly at the test socket. He checked the internal extention and the faults were being thrown up by an extension that has been in place for 10 years +. He stated to me that the new equipment installed in the exchange was more advanced and did more line checks so, although this equipment has been used for Internet with BT for 10 years it is no longer adequate.
All of this I find understandable but the whole way that BT handled this from day 1 of my first call has been appalling. BT openly admitted that the original engineer calls were handled badly and we were credited £9 for the lack of services we had for overly long time. However we are now, 2 months after this, faced with nearly £130 charge for the engineer visit which, looking back with the info I have now, was completely unnecessary. Had the engineers on the phone bothered to reset the line while hub was in the test socket when they were allegedly monitoring it for 48 hours they could have told me there were no faults on their equipment up to the socket and I would have sorted out the internal wiring myself. Even now I can find mention on the Internet of old wiring causing issues but no specific posts to do with exchange upgrades potentially meaning that you need to upgrade internal wiring or mention by the BT call center itself on any of the calls I made to them. All I was told was that everything up to the main box is BT and everything after that mine but since we have made no changes to the wiring we did not think it was applicable until the engineer arrived and told us what he told us then. Yesterday I called Bt again around 9am to dispute the charge. I was informed that because the fault was with our equipment the charge stands. I explained all of the above and I had my case put to the review team. I was told I would get a call back within 4 hours which I did but the phone rang 3 times and as I answered they hung up. I then got a text saying they had tried to call and asked for me to call back which I did to be told that his computer wasn't working. He took my details and said someone would call me back which no one did. I chased again to be told that someone would definitely call me that day. No one did. I chased again today to be told the decision still stands. He has put to final review and promised a call back within 5 days. Until this is resolved direct debit is cancelled. To the letter of the contract we have with BT this is our charge to pay I know that but this could have been avoided if the information was out there on the net, if the original checks done over the phone were done correctly or if I had been told this directly by Bt themselves prior to the engineer being called out which is why I am posting this here so hopefully no one else falls into this trap.

You're right I'm not connected to the BT infinity cabinet. But the BT Infinity cabinets all still route back through the exchange that I am connected to -

What this modem does is connects using VDSL from your home to the VDSL cabinet using the existing copper wires, on to the DSLAM, back to the exchange (over the fibre) and on to BT’s core network.
Your phone line is then still terminated in the original cabinet for telephony (using the cross connect between the old and new cabinets I mentioned above) and back to the exchange over the original multi pair copper cable as it always has done.
    http://www.robertos.me.uk/html/fttx.html
    Quote:
FTTC involves BT Openreach installing a new street cabinet near to the existing one and linking the two. They run optical fibre from the exchange to the new cabinet then link individual lines from the old cabinet to the new one and back to get VDSL2 onto the copper connection to the premises. The PSTN phone connection continues to operate over the pre-existing cable from the old cabinet to the exchange.  It does not get put onto the fibre connection.
In other words the linkage is Exchange >> Old >> DSLAM in New >> Old >> Premises. (Traffic in both directions of course!)
Presumably the equipment in the exchange cannot stay as it is and is upgraded in the process?

And does anyone in the forum have tips on the best ways to get BT to roll out the coverage to a specific village?
I suggest you contact your local county council and ensure that they are part of the Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) project.
BDUK is currently rolling out superfast broadband to many areas that openreach decided was not viable to them.
The 1st county in the country to benefit from this was Cornwall, many other parts of the UK have followed.

  • BT Exchange upgrade - Homehub still shows as ADSL1...

    Hi,
I've had an email last week saying my line would be upgraded today as the exchange has been upgraded. My router was reset earlier but my home hub stats still appear to be showing plain old ADSL. I was under the impression the modulation should show ITU-T G.992.5 and my upstream speeds would improve slightly, but everything seems the same as before. Do I need to do anything at my end for the changes to take place? The hub is a recently fitted 2.0A to replace a faulty 2.0B hub if that is of any help.

     Hello,
     Good news
This is to let you know that we've now upgraded your line and you should now have an improved, more consistent broadband connection, and maybe a speed increase.
You can find out more at bt.com/networkupgrade
Which is great news but the router still shows ADSL Max even after a reset so I'm still not showing any benefits of the exchange upgrade. Has anyone else had this letter and what were your experiences in the upgrade process. There is a lot of confusion over this but I can't find anything definitive. Do I need to contact a mod or is the initial process for after the upgrade for the modem to have a number of successful days connection before it changes? I'm sure someone out there knows.
    Thanks

Firefox has suddenly gone wrong. I was successfully running both Firefox and Internet Explorer 8 on Windows 7. My laptop is new and has plenty of RAM and HDD. I auto-accept upgrades including the most recent Firefox upgrade and the suggested upgrade to Adobe Flash 10.1. But after this, Firefox stopped working and does not work when I re-load Firefox 3.6. Also IE8 now works very slowly and does not locate major websites like Microsoft without a 'can't find the website message' and having to pressing Return a second time. When I do get to the Mozilla website and click on the button to try to download Firefox 3.6.6, I get this message "Oops! Internet Explorer could not find mozilla3.snt.utwente.nl". Can you help with what has gone wrong? As it stands, I can't use Firefox at all. Note: because Firefox did not work after the upgrade, I've downloaded the IE8 version of the Adobe Flash 10.1. What I really want is to be able to use both Firefox and IE8. But is this possible if they use different versions of Adobe Flash?

I have been having the same problem as the original poster. After upgrading to Ffx 3.6.6, the program asks you to upgrade to Flash Player Plugin 10.1. I download and installed 10.1 only to find videos weren't loading.
In my case, the problem is the previous installation of Flash Player (9.0.47) was somehow messing things up. To fix this, because I already had Flash plugin 10.1 installed I had to uninstall 10.1 using the uninstaller from adobe and then manually remove any files related the old flash player plugin 9.0.47
Here is a run-down of my process:
    0. To check if you have a previous installation of the Flash Plugin lurking around, in Firefox go to Tools -> Add-ons -> Plugins (tab). At this point you may seen both Flash plugins.
    1. Proceed to uninstall Flash Plugin 10.1. Adobe provides an uninstaller here: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html
( you have to make sure you have nothing running when you execute the installer).
    2. On my Mac (sorry I don't know what it is in Windows) I searched the hard drive for any files/folders with "Shockwave". I found a folder called "Shockwave 10". It wasn't removed by Adobe's uninstaller. For safety I deleted it and then emptied the trash.
    3. I then went to My HD -> Library -> Internet Plugins.
Remove the file and folder named "Flash player.old"
    4. Restarted; ran the Adobe Flash Player 10.1 installer. Restarted again.
    5. Opened up ffx and double checked the plugins list (see step 1). Version 10.1 is installed and available. Went to problem sites to test it out and Success!
    Hope this helps.

Recently, iTunes upgraded.  My 7th generation iPod is now not recognized and I cannot sync.  The troubleshooting talks  about being visible in Windows (iPod is invisible)  No other options and nothing about windows 8

I have had similar issues with mine, happens mainly if I transfer songs and then decide to disconnect my iPod to listen to them with my IEMs (I use Interenet Explorer in my case and it is not neccessarely up when this happens, so I seriously doubt it is an issue conencted to the web browser). I have no patience for this so my trick is I try to eject it from iTunes, if that does not work, then I bring Windows explorer up, right mouse click on the iPod mounted drive and select Eject. It gives me the same warning but there is a third button selection called Continue. When I choose that it just disconnets the drive anyway and the iPod is finally disconnected. It seems to work each and every time I do it so this solution is fine for me. Would be intersting to see what the real root cause of this is because I started getting this problem with the newer iTunes 11.

  • Recently did upgrade from OS 10.6.8 and to Mainstage 2.2.2 and have lost lights on my Gio pedal only in Mainstage - still have them with Logic.  Tried holding button and replugging USB cable, but did not fix it.

I presume that you mean that the switches do not light up as appropriate when you select a Patch in MS?
If so, in Layout Mode, select each of the buttons in turn, and check that they are a) Assigned to the correct MIDI CC number etc, and b) that "Send Value to" has the correct Port selected.

  • Why do recent Firefox upgrades no longer work as smoothly as they used to?

If I remember correctly, Firefox used to install or at least download upgrades automatically then prompt to ask if I want to to save or run. Then it would restart the browser to let the upgrade complete or ask if I wanted to allow it to restart.
Recently, Firefox upgrades are annoying and no longer automated. I get a prompt asking where to save the installer, e.g. Firefox Setup Stub 33.0.2.exe. It saves the installer and stops. Then we have to navigate to where the file was saved and run it manually. Next I get another prompt asking to save the installer a second time which I assume to be an error and dismiss. Finally, instead of simply prompting the user to restart to allow the upgrade to finish, we get a pop-up message warning that Firefox is already running with a less clear message: "Please close Firefox prior to launching the version you have just installed." Most people wouldn't try to open Firefox again when it's already open.
Now I'm wondering, was it my imagination that Firefox upgrades were once smoother and more automated?

Firefox on Windows never had the ability to run .exe due to security and common sense reasons.
Also who do you think people will blame when they get infected after they run a iamreallyavirus.exe before scanning it.
An update is done in Firefox itself.

Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
