Recently Upgraded to leopard on 1.5ghz powerbook 1.5gb ram

hi
i upgraded to leopard a couple of months ago which caused problems when i did archive and install. there were some bugs with Mail that would not quit. so them i did a clean install and now slowly adding the software needed.
everything seems to run ok except a speed issue. viewing videos have become quite slow even low quality videos on you tube. watching videos on a file offline is also very slow. i have also added more ram to 1.5gb as before it was 756mb.
has anyone gone backward to Tiger after upgrading to leopard because of having an old machine? sometimes i am tempted, but i have made backups with Time Machine already and file transfering has become a chore with large film files!
what can i do to improve the performance of this machine? should i downgrade?
i like some of the smaller new features of leopard, and it would be a shame to lose that as already it hase been useful in my work.
what should i do?

Hi,
How much free disk space is there?
To check how much free space is available on your startup disk:
1. In Finder™, select your startup disk's icon. For most users, this is Macintosh HD.
2. Press the Command-I keyboard combination.
3. The Get Info window for your startup disk will open. In the General pane, the Capacity, Available (free space), and space Used on your startup disk will be displayed there.
Go here and make sure your PBook specs meet the minimum requirements to run Leopard.
And keep in mind, Leopard requiress 9GB of free disk space.

See if your Mac will boot from the install DVD.
    Then uninstall Internet Cleanup.

  • I recently upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard and I noticed that I have more capacity available on the Macintosh HD. I checked my files and applications and they are still on my computer. Can capacity on the HD change after an OS upgrade?

I recently upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard on my MacBook and I noticed that I have more capacity on the Macintosh HD than before the upgrade. I checked my files and applications and they are still on my computer and nothing appears to be missing. Before the upgrade I had around 111 GB capacity with around 10.50 GB available on the Mac HD but now after the upgrade I have 119 GB capacity and 20.92 GB available. Can capacity on the HD change after an OS upgrade?

No, but the upgrade removed unneeded PowerPC code and changed the way free space is determined.

  • Help! I recently upgraded from Leopard (10.5.8) to Snow Leopard (10.6.8) and now my iTunes won't open!

So I upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard. And at first, never received the option to like, carry stuff over from a back up. So I went to the Apple Store and they fixed that, and it looked like everything was fine and dandy and my content was there. I get home, and try to open iTunes and now am receiving this message: The file “iTunes Library.itl” cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes. Would you like to download iTunes now?
I click yes, but there are no updates/downloads of iTunes available, so nothing happens, it just says no updates at this time. I am very nervous about losing my library as I've collected a lot of songs and meticulously organized them over the past five years. How can I get iTunes to open? And without doing anything to lose my library? Please help, I'm super stressed and freaking out.

Download iTunes from Apple's web site and install it.  Don't use Software Update.

  • Currently using iPhoto 7.1.5   We recently upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard with updated Quicktime player.  Our videos off our camera no longer open in Quicktime by double clicking.  Any help?

We are running iPhoto 7.1.5 '08.  After upgrading to Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and Quicktime Player 10.0, our videos off of our camera no longer open by double clicking.  Any help?

Thank you for your quick reply.  I'll give it a try.  Another workaround I figured out last night is to right click the video, click show file, and then double click the file. Quicktime the plays the video.

  • Can't send more than 1 photo from iPhoto to Mail since upgraded to Leopard

    Hi there,
I'm using an older version of iPhoto (4.0.3). We recently upgraded to Leopard, and ever since then, we haven't been able to use the Email icon in iPhoto to attach photos in Mail. It prepares to send all the photos, but only attaches one to a message, and then I get an error message saying, "Mail got an error: Can't get paragraph 8 of content of outgoing message id (a long number). Invalid index."
Does anybody have any idea as to what's going on here? It's very frustrating!!!
Thanks in advance for your help!

With the current software combination you are using, there IS actually this need -- your post (and others) here give evidence that it does not work otherwise. Your choices would seem to be -- in descending order of complexity -- a) revert to OS X 10.4, b) install a newer version of iPhoto, or c) take the extra step of exporting.
Alternatively, have you tried preparing a new message first, then just dragging the selected images directly from iPhoto to your message?
Um, you seem to be contradicting yourself, so I have no idea what you're talking about.
As I already said, I DON'T NEED to take the extra step of exporting the photos into a folder, as I AM selecting and dragging the images directly from iPhoto into Mail.

  • Upgraded to Leopard, Mail doesn't work

I recently upgraded to Leopard and the Mail program doesn't work. Won't display any mail. Seems to send mail okay from my .mac and .aol (my main email address) accounts, but no messages are displayed, and it is impossible to quit Mail without going through a force quit. I resisted upgrading to Leopard because everything ran so smoothly in 10. 4. 11. But I thought it was time. So far, I've seen no improvements, and this one big problem!
    Any ideas? Bob Krist

After upgrading from Tiger to Leopard with the default method Mail was the only thing that didn't work. It wouldn't open a Mail window, appeared to be open on the menu bar and in the dock but would not quit from either command. I had to force quit. When I finally got a mail window to appear, all my email profiles and folders appeared in the left hand bar, but nary an email to be seen in any location. I could not send or receive emails. Pretty much dead!
I didn't have a meltdown because I'd archived my most important emails that were in my folders. I dug through dozens of posts on multiple forums and tried a procedure I could see was making it worse. I shut down the computer so I could get help from AppleCare this morning.
I got in trouble following the less than adequate instructions from The AppleBlog; inadequate because it didn't say where to move the folders and plist to. My most helpful Apple Tech advised me that I needed to QUIT Mail before dragging ONLY the ~Library>Preferences>com.apple.mail.plist file to my desktop. The two folders need to stay in the Library.
After you are out of Mail, on the desktop click on the plist to highlight it. Use Control-click to display the popup menu and select Copy for the plist. Open finder window and select ONLY Preferences (~Library>Preferences) so the word Preferences is highlighted. Go to the Finder>Edit>Paste drop down menu of the toolbar. Select Paste. It will ask if you want to replace the newly created plist with the one you just copied. Select replace. Relaunch Mail and that should restore all your Mail Profiles and retrieve your messages.
This process even brought back my mail folders and put all my saved messages back where they were filed. I didn't have to get into my archived messages file after all.
I just wish I could have found this simpler fix online without spending hours searching and reading conflicting suggestions. Maybe this will help someone else fix their problem faster.

  • Can't find emails after upgrade to Leopard

I've recently upgraded to Leopard from Panther. Once the upgrade was complete, I started up Mail to check my emails, and was greeted with a message asking me if I wanted to import my old emails. As it was getting late, I declined, figuring I'd do it the next day. On starting up Mail the next day, I didn't get the import message, and Mail started downloading emails from one of my POP servers, which I managed to stop after 4 messages had hit my Inbox.
I've now imported all the old emails from my other POP servers from the folders within each "POP-*username@popserver*" folder in /Library/Mail/, but the folder for the POP server that I had downloaded the 4 emails from now only has those 4 .emlx files in the /INBOX.mbox/Messages folder, rather than the several hundred that would have been in it prior to upgrading.
Is there anything I can do to get them back? Thanks in advance.

    Jim:
Larry is correct. Look at the disks that came with the computer with Pacifist to locate, extract and install iPhoto. If you can't find it then contact Apple with your purchase number in hand and tell them you need the software disk for the iLife 08 applications.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • IPhoto won't import Nikon D70 raw files after upgrade to Leopard

I recently upgraded to Leopard, and yesterday, I hooked my Nikon D70 up to the computer. iPhoto auto starts, and tells me that there are pictures to import. When I click the import button, iPhoto tells me that it is importing the photos, (which are in Nikon raw format) but in fact, it is not. The photos don't "flash" across the screen as they are being imported as they used to. When iPhoto thinks it is done, there are no new photos on my hard drive. A spotlight search confirms that fact.
Jpeg photos still import just like they used to. Only raw photos don't import.
If I manually open iPhoto, and click on file then import, I can find my cameras CF card, and highlight the photos I want to import, and iPhoto will then import raw photos. It won't import them with the simple attach the camera, one click import that I have grown used to. My D70 is a supported camera for iPhoto, and it used to work in OSX 10.4. Is there a setting I'm missing somewhere?
Thanks in advance for any help offered.

I had the same prob with my mac and my D70.
I did an upgrade to leopard from tiger. After that, iPhoto would not import photos. The camera and pics would show up in the app, and would let me try an import, but it would come up with an error saying "20 photos were in an incompatible format and could not be imported".
Since upgrading to Leopard, image capture wouldn't work either. App would run and then wouldn't. Would crash and error. Wouldn't import photos at all either.
I was able to manually drag photos from my camera to the desktop and then import into iPhoto.
iPhoto wasn't the only thing playing up on my mac (networking, file permissions, backlit keyboard, software update, ffmpeg app were all problematic), so I backed up everything I wanted to keep to an external drive and did an erase and install of Leopard. This has fixed practically every problem I had. Do the same if you can, cos it has made my mac a pleasure to use again.

  • Problems upgrading from Leopard to Snow Leopard

Hopefully I'm in the right place. This is my first Apple and my first problem. Recently upgrade from Leopard to SL and have had problems ever since. Mail, TM, Safari, etc. I have searched for explanations, but unfortunately can't find answers I understand. I have MS and my cognitive functions aren't what they use to be. I have seen suggestions about clean installs, restoring from TM, cloning HD then re-installing, etc... I would love to stay with SL but need it to work, so would a clean install do the trick? If so, how do I do a "clean install"? Should I just go back to Leopard and what would be the best way? I backed up with TM before I upgraded. I have had my MBP since fall of 2007 and it was starting to slow down before the upgrade so I wouldn't mind the clean install of either OSX. Any help would be appreciated.

since you backed up before you upgraded you can safely do the following.
boot from the snow leopard DVD.
start Disk Utility from the Utilities menu and erase the main hard drive.
Quit disk utility and proceed with the install of Snow leopard. that's what many people call a "clean install".
once the install is finished and you restart the computer you'll get to Setup Assistant. it will give you an option to migrate your data from a TM backup. you can choose to do so although it's possible that this will reintroduce the problems you are having now. another option is to skip the migration at this point (you can do it later) and set up the computer.
now you can restore your data from the TM backup. you can use Migration Assistant (it's in /Applications/Utilities) or you can restore things by hand if using Migration assistant reintroduces the problems you are having now. you can do something in between too. you can use Migration Assistant to migrate just your user data but now system files or Applications and reinstall the applications by hand.

  • Error in Pages after upgrading to leopard.

    Hi Everyone,
I just recently upgraded to Leopard and everything is runing smoothly (and beautifully) except Pages. For some reason, every time I open Pages I get this error:
"Some warnings occurred. Would you like to review them now?
You can review warnings at any time by choosing View > Show Document Warnings."
Then when I view the warnings, I read this:
"Substituted Font - The font “Helvetica-Narrow” was substituted for the missing font “Helvetica.”
And in the bottom left corner I see "replace font", but it is grayed out.
Obviously the font is not installed on my computer anymore, but what happened to it? How can I change the "default" font to something else so that I don't see the warning anymore?
Is there anything else I can do?
    Thanks,
    Chris

See if THIS helps you out.

  • Upgraded to leopard and Cant delete podcast in itunes please help

after leopard upgrade.....when i try and delete an old played podcast my itunes immediately pops up an error message and says it quit unexpectedly. this happens w. any podcast and i have the current version of itunes, i also recently upgraded to leopard so i dont know if that has something to do with it, but i CAN play music and videos and podcasts, i just cant delete a podcast, or update them?
    any help would be great

    Good girl.
"though a bit sluggish" 512 to one gig memory is just making it. two gigs you'll be more satisfied or at minimum 1.5 gigs of memory.
    1) I can't answer that based upon normal itunes migration. I just keep my mp3 music on hard drives and when I re-do a computer from scratch just copy them over(they are all metatagged) and use the itunes "add to library" function then change the view using itunes, set my equalizer and I'm basically done.
    2) Tiger and Leopard bookmark file are interchangeable. user/library/safari/bookmarks. You should always save that file elsewhere and just drag it over to user/library/safari of course the Safari folder is not created until you launch Safari at least once.
    3) use Mail's import function, just direct it to where your mailboxes are stored.
    4) address book you can do this function and save it after done. In Tiger under user/library/application support/addressbook there will be a file called addressbook.data Now create a new folder(do it on the desktop) and name it TigerData. Copy that addressbook.data file into that new folder. Now re-name that folder to TigerData.abbu in the addressbook program use the file, import, addressbook archive menu item and choose TigerData.abbu Once done save that file for future Leopard installs.
