Regarding a browser running in a Java applet

Hi,
I'm pretty new to Java so please, bare with me.
Would it be possible to run a fully functional Firefox (or other browser) instance in a Java applet, provided the server is a Fedora box with virtual frame buffer?
If yes, what would happen if I download a file, where would the file be downloaded? The user (me) or the server the applet is hosted on?
Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Thanks Chuck!
I'm just trying to create for myself a tool which is able to act like a browser. I'm using currently a headless user on an X, then exporting the X window to an image.
I was thinking to effectively bound the virtual frame buffer to an applet. Say, the vfb is running on display :11 and to bring that display to the applet, in live. Applet because I can't think of any other thing which would be able to do it.
So you think this would not be possible?

    on 64-bit Ubuntu installation I need to be able to run a 32-bit java applet within browser. If this is possible, how? With icedtea6 plugin (for 64-bit jre) firefox crashes when applet first starts to run.

    Hi,
    You can try to install the Oracle Java via the Ubuntu Software Manager/Update Manager/PackageKit/Package Manager, if it is an option. Please note that you may have to temporarily disable the IcedTea plugin in '''Tools '''('''Alt '''+ '''T''') > '''Add-ons''' > '''Plugins '''to prevent conflicts when playing Java content in Firefox. Posting in the [http://ubuntuforums.org/ Ubuntu forums] would also be very helpful.

    Java is no longer supported on Mac OS X 10.6.    The security of Java has been found to be so bad, you are lucky to get any Apps that work wtih it.    You need a minimum of Mac OS X 10.7.3 to run the latest Java applets and that using Java from http://www.java.com/  See the user tip here to optimize Java under 10.6.8

  • Create a file at a Windows Vista using java applets

    I have created a java applet which is downloaded to create local file at a Windows Vista PC. The java codes are:
    File out = new File("c:/users/test/hkuesd.properties");
    FileWriter fw = new FileWriter(out);
    PrintWriter pw = new PrintWriter(fw, true);
    pw.println("#sample property file");
    pw.println("key_path=C:/");
    pw.close();
    fw.close();
    If I turn off "Users Account Control" under "Control Panel" --> "User Accounts", the file "hkuesd.properties" is created at c:\users\test and can be found using windows explorer.
    However, if I turn on "Users Account Control", I can not find the file "hkuesd.properties" using windows explorer. But the file can be detected if I run another java applet program with the following codes:
    File xpdir = new File("c:/users/test/hkuesd.properties");
    FileInputStream fis = null;
    if (xpdir.exists()) {
    try {
    fis = new FileInputStream("c:/users/test/hkuesd.properties");
    Properties p = new Properties();
    p.load(fis);
    fis.close();
    privateKeyPath = p.getProperty("key_path", "no value");
    catch (Exception e) {}
    Interestingly, if "Users Account Control" is on and I created the file "c:\users\test\hkuesd.properties" manually, the file creation codes
    mentioned above seems to create another "hkuesd.properties" at the same "c:\users\test". The evidence is I run the second java applet program which can detect the one created by the first java applet but not the one I created manually.

    I agreed that it is hardly explained in words. I
    suggested to write two
    simple java applets using the codes and you will see
    the effects:
    (1) the first applet can create a file
    "hkuesd.properties"
    (2) cannot find the file using windows explorer to
    search the whole drive.
    (3) However, can read the content of the file using
    second applet.You still haven't address your problem of swallowing exceptions. Your code might be throwing an exception that tells you exactly what the problem is. Change your code to display or log that exception.

  • Java Applets not running in Any browser

    Hi,
    I have JRE / JSE (1.6.17) installed on a windows 7, 32 bit Intel Machine.
    I am able to do all the programming and stuff (in Java), but when i try to open a web page with a Java Applet, it just does not show.
    The page gives a message saying that an additional plugin is required.
    I tried, Google Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer...all have the same problem.
    The environment variables are correctly set.
    This is something completely new for me, so would appreciate some help

    Actually i think its more related to JRE.
    I was actually referring to general applet loading.
    I cannot open any applet in any browser.

  • Problem running Java applets since Java update 2 (1.6.0_20)

    Hi,
    Since I upgraded to Java update 2, Java applets started having problems. The most noticeable ones are:
    Non-modal windows appear behing the browser Window (tested Safari 4, 5, Chrome 5).
    Double buffering not working as usual (slower, white boxes appear when dragging a window, etc.)
    Slower rendering in general
    The same applications run perfectly using Java Web Start. And they used to work very well also in Java update 1.
    The application can be tested here (press ok if a login prompt appears):
    Java applet: http://jmap3.k2geospatial.com/montreal_applet/
    Java Web Start: http://jmap3.k2geospatial.com/montreal_jws/dockingClient.jnlp
    Our applications running in applets use the new plug-in 2 with JNLP files.
    Notice the Java startup splash (the animated sun-like logo) is not moving as smoothly as usual. It is very jerky now.
    Are these problems known by anyone?
    How can I downgrade Java to previous version?
    sorry I cross-posted this in Unix forum also. I think it is better here.
    Thank you,
    Jean-Robert

    Since the last Java update on mac, all my OpenGL applets stop working and now just shows a white screen on Chrome, Firefox and Opera. They was working well on all browsers (Safari/WebKit,Chrome,Firefox,Opera) just before the update.
    The trouble maker seem to be the java plugin 2 and the new offscreen rendering pipeline, as reported by jrhaddad with the disucssion linked to the different Java/OpenGL community forums.
    This is a huge regression for me, and I think for all hobbies/ independent developers and all companies who are doing some Java/OpenGL develoment. All our work just stop working since this update.
    If would really want to know from Apple if they are working on this problem and/or how this can be solved.
    Should this be fixed by Apple with a new java update, or should the various browsers must upgrade their applet support plugins according to the new java plugin 2 changes ?
    Best Regards,
    Jérôme

  • I am trying to use an education program that needs Java applets to install and use and it will not use Safari. When I download IE from the web it will not install. How can I get a browser that will work on my MacAir for travel use of this program?

    I am trying to use and education program that needs Java applets and it will not run on Safari. IE will not install from the web. How do I get a browser that will work to install so I can use this program when I travel.

    Try using FireFox. IE will only run on a Mac if you run Windows on the Mac.
    Windows on Intel Macs
    There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
    Install the Apple Boot Camp software.  Purchase Windows 7 or Windows 8.  Follow instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and installing Windows.  Boot Camp enables you to boot the computer into OS X or Windows.
    Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  Parallels is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
    VM Fusion and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  VM Fusion is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
    CrossOver which enables running many Windows applications without having to install Windows.  The Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
    VirtualBox is a new Open Source freeware virtual machine such as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris.  It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM Fusion.
    Note that Parallels and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc.  There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization.  The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system. See MacTech.com's Virtualization Benchmarking for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion. A more recent comparison of Parallels, VM Fusion, and Virtual Box is found at Virtualization Benchmarks- Parallels 10 vs. Fusion 7 vs. VirtualBox. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard and later. Except for Crossover and a couple of similar alternatives like DarWine you must have a valid installer disc for Windows.
    You must also have an internal optical drive for installing Windows. Windows cannot be installed from an external optical drive.
