Reloading classes in WebLogic Server 6.1

Hello all,
We are developing applications for wlserver6.1 on JDK 1.3 and the development
proccess is slow due to the fact that every time that we modify a class (not servlets
or JSP´s) we have to restart the server o redeploy the application in order to
reload the new version of the class. I understand that this is because the JVM
does not support Hot Code Replace and the Server classloaders do not check for
changes in classes only in Servlets (we are running the server in development
mode).
Is there a work around for this? A custom classloader perhaps? Third party tools?
All replies welcome
Thanks

Thanks, that's very helpful.
In 7.0/8.1, you could use weblogic.Deployer to redeploy just the webapp
module without bouncing the rest of the app. In your common case of
changing classes which are only in the webapp, this would be very fast.
You might save yourself some time by just developing on 8.1. java
weblogic.Deployer -examples will show you how to redeploy just the
webapp. Assuming your app didn't use any new 8.1 features, then it
should run fine on 6.1 as well.
I don't honestly remember whether 6.1 offered this functionality or not.
weblogic.Deployer was not added until 7.0 so you would have to check
the weblogic.deploy command.

To answer your questions...
1) Hardware: Pentium II, 512Mb RAM
2) Redeploy: From console by unmarking the deployed check for the webapp box applying
the changes and remarking the deployed checkbox. For this to work i must put all
my classes in web-inf i would prefer it if i could put my classes elsewhere on
the classpath. If there are other better ways to redeploy i would be gratefull
for any advice, the applications directory and weblogic.Deployer sound interesting,
is it worth me looking at these possibilities?
3) The application consists of:
- 1 web application with around 50 Servlets and 2500 JSPs
- 45 EJB´s
Unfortunately the application is not mine, i´ve been contracted to add a new module
to it and do not have control over the applications architecture. The elements
that i want to reload are typically Java classes that at the moment are inside
the web app. Ideally i´d like to be able to put them anywhere on the classpath
and reload them.
Hope that this info is of some interest to you, should need anything else let
me know

Yes, 4 minutes is too long.
I actually own this problem for our next release so I'm pretty
interested to hear more about your situation.
In particular:
1) What hardware is this on?
2) How are you redeploying the application?
a) through the console
b) through the applications directory
c) weblogic.Deployer
d) wldeploy ant task
e) in your IDE (if so, which one?)
3) Can you give me more details on your application size? (How many
EJBs/webapps etc)
4) What are you typically changing during development? java classes,
ejb implementations, ejb interfaces, web content etc...
If you (or anyone else) wants to give this information privately, you
could email me by removing the please.noemail.com and replacing it with
bea.com
Anyway, in the current world, I usually suggest that people consider
breaking their app up into smaller sub-applications which will redeploy
faster. It's a bit of work and in no way ideal, but I don't have any
better answers, yet...

go i think that its quite large.

You should almost never need to restart a server during development.
However, you will need to redeploy your application to pick-up class
changes.
How slow is redeploying your application?

    Hi WebLogic Experts,
    In our project we are using WebLogic Serve 10.3.3. I need to run one script file. could you please suggest me where should i need to place that script file in WebLogic Server 10.3.3 and How to run & stop that Script file.?

    1. You can put a command line into startWebLogic.sh to start your script file.
    2. In your proyect you can create a java class to run the script file.
    3. You can create a java class to run the script file an setup it like a startup class into weblogic server.
    4. You can create a java class to run the script file an setup it like a job scheduler into weblogic server.
    In what time you need run this script file?

  • Bind custom object in weblogic server start

    I want to bind my custom object to jndi when weblogic server start. how can i do?

    Bonjour Yiwen,
    That could easily done by registering a startup class in weblogic server that will do the binding of the object in the JNDI tree (it can also create all the subcontexts you need).
    Below is some code that works fine on WLS 5.1:
    a.. a custom object
    package StartupJNDI;
    public class CustomObject extends Object
    protected String name;
    public CustomObject ( String aszName )
    name = aszName;
    public String getName()
    return name;
    public void setName(String newName)
    name = newName;
    a.. a startup class
    package StartupJNDI;
    import javax.naming.*;
    public class Registration
    public Registration()
    InitialContext initCtx = null;
    try
    initCtx = new InitialContext ();
    initCtx.bind ( "Startup Registered Object" , new CustomObject ( "This is a void object" ) );
    catch ( Exception ex )
    ex.printStackTrace ( System.err );
    public static void main(String[] args)
    new Registration();
    a.. a startup class in weblogic.properties:
    weblogic.system.startupClass.JNDIStartupRegistration=StartupJNDI.Registration
    Please, be sure that the path to these classes is also registered in the WEBLOGIC_CLASSPATH system property (e.g. : in your startweblogic.cmd file on Windows NT).
    You can check that the object is bound in the JNDI tree through the console.
    Hope this helps,

  • Reload a jar in weblogic server without restart

    Hi All,
    We are using weblogic version '10.0.1.0' and have 'reports.jar' file in server for reports.
    If we change any existing class file under 'reports.jar' then we are using below steps in order to recognize a modified jar by weblogic
    1) We need to recreate a jar using eclipse in local IDE and
    2) Copy the 'reports.jar' into server
    3) Need to restart server inorder to recognize the modified jar
    Is there any alternative solution to reload a jar in weblogic server without restart?
    Please do the needful.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Gangadhar

    Hi,
    If this is for weblogic running on development mode, then you can go for auto-deployment feature where weblogic will auto-deploy modified application from autodeploy directory.
    For production mode, you can go for production-redeployment feature of weblogic where it uses application versioning. So for example you deployed webapp1 with version app1.0 and then for new release you will deploy webapp1 with version app2.0 adding a retirement policy to retire old application after said time and start using webapp1 with app2.0.
    Refer to link for mode detail - http://middlewaresupport.wordpress.com/2013/03/21/production-redeployment-feature-in-weblogic/
    rank it if found useful

    This is a Unix problem, you may check if you have all the permissions.
    I suspect that some of the files which may be owned by someone other than user-value and therefore preventing the writting to the

    Can you check the files owership under /usr/local/bea/wlserver6.1/config/mydomain/applications/.wlnotdelete to see if any of the
    files or subdirectories are owned by someone else, such as 'root' or even under different group?"
    Hope this help

  • Call a class after successfuly starting weblogic server

    I need to create a class which which some parameter and start a application automatically just after starting weblogic server so that when user request for application he will get quick response. Actually my application takes some time to be start service so that the very first user need to wait for some time.
    I am facing the exception of not founding initial context is thrown because the load-on-startup and
    by creating startup class the classes are loaded before the server comes in to running state.
    In that case the server doen't have its host name and port configurated.
    At the time of application setup we need to get the initial context from t3: by using
    host and port. At this stage any of the process is unable to get the context.
    Is there any way by which we can automatically call a class after starting the server.

    I have deployed a ear file.
    which has one Ear project and one ejb module and one portal application and about 4 web applications.
    One of my webapplication need to be started before the user start working on any web application.
    I have tried to configure and run you suggestion but i am unable to find the place where should i put the listener and startup class entry. my ear project has weblogic-application.xml file i shall put these entry there then xml doesn't validate and i shall get the project compile error. and same case with the application.xml of ear project and portal application weblogic.xml and web.xml file. I have found only one which is not giving compile time error is wlw-config.xml in portal application.
    I am working on weblogic workshop 10.2
    if you have any idea about that where i can put these configuration entry so that the class will called on firing event by server. then please let me know.
    thanks in advance.

  • Can't start weblogic server using Ant

    Hello,
    I can't start the WL Portal after installation.
    On a Windows 2000 Server SP2 : - I installed WebLogic Server 6.1 SP2 with the examples
    - I installed WebLogic Portal 4.0 SP2 (giving the same password as during the WL
    Server installation) -I installed EBCC 4.0 SP2 .
    I updated the license with UpdateLicense.cmd
    Now If I run - run the default WL server, both from the menu and as a service -
    enter the WL server console (on port 7001) - run the EBCC .
    When I try to start the WL Portal, from the program menu I am able to start the
    WP server properly , But I I try to start it from an ant wlrun then I get the error
    an IllegalAccessError (with the same password I gave during installation and I use
    to enter the server console): The WebLogic Server did not start up properly. Exception

Also I tried again the command "./startWeblogic.sh " and get a new error message which I post below. I am rlly worry about this. Is there maybe a way to reset the OBIEE and undo all changes ?

  • How to make changes effect in log4j.xml without restarting weblogic server

    Hi ,
    I have successfully configured log4j in my weblogic server 8.1.
    Everytime i made a change in log4j.xml i need to restart the server
    is there any configuration or parameter to set without restarting server??
    Thanks in advance,
    CK

    I don't think you need to restart the server, atleast I never needed to when making changes to jsp pages. You only need to restart when you make changes to java classes. Some might argue jsp is converted to servlet which is a java class.....
    Try refreshing the page when you make any changes. This works for me, if it doesn't work try turning reloadable="true" in your context path in tomcat's server.xml

  • JoltConnectionPool can not start in weblogic server

    Hi
    I am trying to run the sample Tuxedo provided application which uses Servlets or Ejb.
    Now the Tuxedo Server has been configured and running properly.
    I have WebLogic Server installed and had created the JoltSessionPool with name "MAJoltConnectionPool" and had also defined the StartupClass & ShutdonClass.
    While defining the JoltSessionPool i had given min services as 1 and max services as 5 and others as default,
    and the JoltSessionPool's target is a weblogic managed server which named ct2.
    Then i tryed to start the ct2 server on command line such as:
    startManagedWebLogic.cmd ct2 http://localhost:7001
    I got an error in starting "MAJoltConnectionPool" but the server ct2 is starting normally.
    Anyone who can help me to find out the reason? Thanks a lot.
    The Command Line window shown following in the Log:

    Hi
    To resolve this problem , you have 2 solutions:
    - modify the config.xml file to add in the tag <security-configuration> the following line :
    <clear-text-credential-access-enabled>true</clear-text-credential-access-enabled>
    or
    - check the checkbox "Clear Text Credential Access Enabled" in the settings for the domain / security / general / advanced
    restart the weblogic server to activate this change if necessary (Normaly, no restarts are necessary with weblogic server v10.3.5.0)
    Hope this reponse help you (if it's not too late ;-) )

    We want to use Coherence 3.6 with Weblogic Server 10.3. During server startup, we get the following error. My understanding is the cluster should be started automatically based on the configuration listed below the error. Appreciate any pointers.
    <Dec 15, 2011 3:20:11 PM PST> <Error> <Coherence> <BEA-000000> <2011-12-15 15:20:11.920/67.311 Oracle Coherence SE 3.6.0.4 <Error> (thread=Cluster, member=n/a): This member could not join the cluster because of a configuration mismatch between this member and the configuration being used by the rest of the cluster. This member specified a cluster name of "EPCIS" which did not match the name of the running cluster. This indicates that there are multiple clusters on this network attempting to use overlapping network configurations. Hi jmendelak,
    In the warfile i have jsp,servlets,java classes.
    In my working directory i have jsp and html files and in web-inf folder i have a folder by name classes in which i have the servlets and java classes.
    I made the war file and when i tried to deploy i was getting this error.
    I had previously deployed this war file on weblogic6.1 it was working fine.
    I have upgraded my operating sytem to Windows2000 professional from WinNT 4.0.I reinstalled the weblogic again and had set up the environment variables.
    After going through the error could you find out the reason?Is it because some seeting is missing?
