Remotely restart FIOS (MI424WR) Router

My router frequently slows speeds to a crawl or stops working.
Does the router have an easy way to do this, or has anyone came up with a script to: automatically login remotely to reboot the router?
The router doens't have SSH and I refuse to use telnet. I'm gonna try to use linux/curl to script the behavior of logging in and clicking the reboot router link.

I have the same problem and have to reboot my gen 3 actiontec router every few days as my upload speeds come to a crawl, oddly download speeds are fine.   So here is what I ended up doing.  This is from a Windows 7 64 bit PC and this automtically reboots the fios actiontec gen 3 router every night.  The PC that runs this script needs to be powered on at the time this script runs.
1) Enabled Telent Access for Local Access Only (that means while only on my local network).  I did  this by
a) login with browser to 192.168.1.1 with admin id and password
b) Go to Advanced .. Local Administration ....  Allow local telnet access ... Using Primary Telnet Port (23)
2) Download Telnet Scripting Tool a.k.a TST10.exe from http://www.theworldsend.net/download.php?get=TST10&extension=zip
3) I unziped this download and placed the file TST10.exe file from the  TST10.zip in this directory
"F:\My Documents-James\Dropbox\Dropbox\reboot-router"
4) I enabled Telnet  Client on the Windows 7 PC I am running this from by turing on the telnet client windows feature
. Here is how to do that
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/910.how-to-enable-telnet-client-in-window...
5) I created this script and called it "reboot-router.txt"  and placed in the same folder as the tst10.exe program.  Here are the exact contents of this file, except replace "admin" with the administrator  id if you changed it on your router (I did) and place the password for this admin id (fios admin password) on the 5th line of the script
192.168.1.1
WAIT "Username:"
SEND "admin\m"
WAIT "Password:"
SEND "enteryouradminpassswordhere\m"
WAIT ">"
SEND "system reboot\m"
WAIT ">"
6) Now from a command prompt I would run this command
tst10.exe /r:reboot-router.txt
This would reboot the router.  Now the challenge was to get this program to run automatically with "parameters" via windows scheduler.  I could not get that to work for some reason via the add arguments.  So I had to create a batch file.
7) Create a batch file called "reboot-router.bat" and I placed it in the same folder with the .txt file and .exe file
"F:\My Documents-James\Dropbox\Dropbox\reboot-router".  Here are the exact contents of this .bat file.
title reboot router
F:
cd "F:\My Documents-James\Dropbox\Dropbox\reboot-router"
@echo:
sleep 2
tst10.exe /r:reboot-router.txt /o:output.txt /m
@echo:
8) Create a windows task to run every day at 4 am to run this reboot-router.bat file.  Here is how I did that
a)Right Click My Computer from desktop ....
b) Click Manage (to be at Computer Management) ...
c) Click Task Scheduler under System tools
d) Under actions on right side click "Create a basic task"
e) give it a name such as reboot router..
f) click Next
g) Keep Daily radio button checked and click Next
h) select the time you want to have this run and keep other defaults of recur every day "1"  and Start date
i) Select "Start a program"  for "What actions do you want the task to perform"
j) For Program or Script click the browse button and point it to reboot-router.bat
in my case it was "F:\My Documents-James\Dropbox\Dropbox\reboot-router\reboot-router.bat"
k) click Next
l) give it name
9) You are now done!!!!
I tested this at step 6 to make sure I had everything working
Good luck to everyone, James Stroud

  • Set up with fios mi424wr router bridge

can I set up the new TC with a FiOS MI424WR Rev. F router.  I'd like to use the TC as my rouer and have the FiOS modem/router set up as a bridge (I have TV service and phone service, and the modem is connected with coax cable).

In my case I have the TC right next to the Verizon FiOs modem/router. So, I turned off the Verizon wireless so as not to create interference. As for the configuration, I set the TC to bridged not because I'm savy with these things but because the AirPort Utility on my iPhone told me to.
@LaPastenague, I'm confused about your suggestion the guest wireless doesn't work in bridge mode, mine does.
If you are able to run an ethernet cable from your Verizon FiOs modem/router to another part of your house, that will allow you to set up your TC a distance away to give you better wifi coverage in your house. Stone walls prevent me from doing this. If I need better coverage, I will buy the $99 AirPort Express and set it up in bridge mode working wirelessly from the TC.
    I hope this helps.

  • Veriozon FiOS MI424WR Router Disconnects Frequently

i dont know what the hell is wrong, but its been getting on  my last nerves. the router i have is right there in the title.. so there's really no need to ask.. but here is my problem ..
In late January of this year, i noticed that the WAN Coax light continuously turns off every few seconds, and sometimes the Internet light goes orange. Eventually, after several times of going on and off, the WAN Coax light stops illuminating, later followed by the Internet light. i dont understand why this light keeps going off. it interferes with YouTube videos ( if the light goes off while watching a video, the video stops loading ), it interferes with downloads ( if the light goes off during a download, the download stops permanently. ), it even interferes with page loading, which causes nightmares if im trying to do an online transaction. Why does the Router do this ? whats wrong with it ?

Sounds like your router is on it's way out or there is something bad on your fiber connect.  You may see something in the system monitor logs.
Probably time to contact Verizon support.

  • Actiontec MI424WR Router Revision I - Having a problem

    Background:
    =========
I am running FIOS Triple Play service since January 6 (20 days). I have the Actiontec MI424WR FIOS N Router REV. I with the latest firmware.   Connected to the MI424WR is an Netgear WNDR4500 (via LAN to LAN connection), which serves as Access Point.   WiFi is completely turned OFF on the Actiontec.
I had Internet/Phone only package for 18 months without any problems, service downtime or slowdowns. The connection was from the ONT directly to Netgear WNDR3700 router via Ethernet. There was no Actiontec(s) used.
    Issue:
    =====
The problem desrcibed below is happening on my HARDWIRED PC (meaning, connected via Ethernet to LAN), so this has nothing to do with WIFI.
On four separate occasions I noticed that after running for about 48-72 hours, that the internet pretty much stops working. Some pages stop loading (cannot be found) but some do load (VERY SLOWLY), but do not display graphics, or the text is misalligned and in weird fonts.  In addition, my Outlook 2010 starts getting "stuck" in trying to retrieve email, and PING'ing sometimes works and sometimes doesn't.  Bascially, it's like my whole internet goes down, but not 100%.  Maybe 95%.
    Testing:
    ======
Going to 192.168.1.1 (IP of Actiontec) and/or 192.168.1.26 (IP of Netgear WNDR4500) shows that both are connected to the internet. However, those same pages load  (if at all) "very slowly".
I initially thought that thep roblem may be within my PC or the Netgear WNDR4500, but I am 99% sure it is not related to either. First of all, I have been running the same build of Windows 7 SP1 for at least 6 months and I never have any problems. Additionally, when these internet issues start, the rest of the computer continues to run just fine. REBOOTING the PC (numerous times) does NOT resolve the issue.
I then went on to see if rebooting the WNDR4500 helps anything. Nada. Same issues remain.
Only when I reboot the Actiontec MI424WR FIOS N Router REV. I (running firmware version: 40.19.22) does the problem get completely resolved. This is done while the the is PC on and without any reboots. After the Actiontec goes back online, I am able to just refresh any of the "defective" webpages, and they re-load fast and looking just fine.   All of he four times I have had this happen all I needed to do is turn off and then back on the Actiontec.
This lasts for about 48-72 hours, and then the same exact problem arises.
    Conclusion:
    ========
Something must be happening to the Actiontec that causes this scenario. By the way, the STB's work just fine during this whole ordeal.  I have checked the log file of the Actiontec and cannot find anything abnormal.
I would love to hear opinions from others, or especially if you think you had something like this happen to you.
I just can't imagine what it can be.  I do have Verzion giving me a replacement Rev. I (RED case) router later this week.  Perhaps ithe one I have is flaky.

Well, my replacement Rev I lasted for the same 48 or so hours and then the same exact problem appeared.
I have decided to flash my WNDR4500 with the BETA firmware as the next step of trying to solve my issue. It is : Version 1.0.0.103 - BETA
In the mentime, here is a copy of my Actiontec LOG file from the moment the replacement Rev I. was installed to the moment I had to turn it off/on manually to fix thing (at 9:44:05 on Feb 2). I don't see anything wrong anywhere.
I have redacted my IP address for privacy.

  • Swap Actiontec MI424WR Router

Verizon needed to swap my Actiontec MI424WR router for performance reasons.  However I had a significant amount of time invested in my configuration so I was reluctant to agree.  Fortunately I had 7 versions of my configuration saved.  It was my understanding from talking with Verizon that I should be able to load saved configurations into the new router.  However when I go to do this I get ...
The configuration file that you are trying to load does not match this device I could    save a configuration file from the old router and load it into the old router.I can       save a configuration file from the new router and load it into the new router.I cannot  save a configuration file from the old router and load it into the old router. I can save a configuration file from the new router  and load a configuration from the new Has anyone successfully swapped an Actiontec device or solved this issue? There are the specs for the new router ... unfortunately I don't know the specs for the old one as Verizon took it. Firmware Version: 20.10.7.5  Model Name: MI424WR-GEN2  Hardware Version: F Got a response from Verizon and Actiontec and it's not a good one.  Configuration files are specific to device therefore new devices must always be configured manually. Does this make any sense?

This got off topic real quick but I have the same issue as the original poster, A LOT of time invested in configuration especially for VoIP QOS as that is not documented very well nor do the Verizon techs understand anything in that arena much less general networking and always respond with we don't support QOS.  Really?  Better get w/ the rest of the world if you want to keep customers Verizon!!! I was actually told by a tech that if my speeds are in the kb's for a 150/150 plan it can only mean I have some malware or a virus on my system.  His claim was that a higher level tech had told him this is a factual rule.  He stuck tight to this claim even after I told him I atached a single, "flashed-to-factory" tablet with a direct ethernet connection directly to the router with no other devices connected and wireless disabled, had the same exact issue as the other PCs.  Yes, a virus or malware *could* be a problem in some circumstances but this guy was clinging to it like it was always the case which is rediculous.  I went on to prove that if what he was saying was true, why would my mobile devices experience this horrible connection speed when *ONLY* connected to the FiOS router and not other networks???  Idiot. Back to the config file.  I've checked both routers and they are identical in model, version, firmware and both are gen3 I.  The details under System Monitoring > Router Status is identical (except for obvious serial # and MAC of course). So it appears that this actiontec feature was intentionally hacked by Verizon which really gets under my skin.  I am sure they do this so people don't load corrupt or misconfigured configuration files into the new router and still complain about the same issue they were having.  But this is a very shoddy way to NOT have to provide the proper support where a real qualified technician should be able to identify BEFORE changing out the router if the config file is the issue or not. My biggest gripe is the techs that work at Verizon that I have dealt with have a very poor understanding of common networking concepts, troubleshooting methods and how routers actually work and I don't agree with Verizon's blatent decision to remove this capability as if they know better then their cutomers whats good for them. Now I have to go through and screen shot every config page and manually key in everything.  What a PIA especially when I'm absolutely certain the issue is the chewed up fiber strands I can visually see with my eyes in my yard from gophers but the verizon tech still thinks it's the router!!!  Idiot. POOR MOVE VERIZON.

  • What WiFi extender is compatible with the MI424WR router?

My house is larger than the MI424WR router can service with wireless connectivity and I'm looking at adding a wifi extender, but want to be sure it will work with the Actiontec MI424WR router I have with FIOS. I'm thinking of the Linksys RE1000. Anybody know if that (or any other extender) would be compatible?
    Thanks.

You're not adding a "second line," you're just extending your LAN.
The key point to understand is that the primary router provides LAN access on three different media; wired Ethernet, WiFi and over the coax (using a system called MoCA).  Normally, the only coax clients on the LAN are set-top boxes.   However, the coax LAN is available to anything that plugs into coax.  Thus, all you need is a device that converts the coax LAN to something more useful, like Ethernet or WiFi.  This is called a "bridge," and is a different function than a router.
There are several devices that can be used to bridge coax MoCA to Ethernet and/or Wifi.  Actiontec routers can be run in bridge mode, and are suggested by many folks on these boards.
Here's a link that explains how to do it:

  • Got new Quantum MI424WR router and dropcam and IP cameras won't respond.

I just got the Quantum MI424WR router installed the other day. i have 1 Dropcam and 4 of the 'old' verizon wirelss ip cameras that they sold for HM&C. Now none of them connect to my Vera system that was working flawlessly prior to my install. I know dropcam only works on 2.4 and i think this router is 2.4 and 5.8 plus i have Verizon installed extenders at 5.8.  None of the cameras will respond to this router. Any help appreciated.

Hi, those drop cams probably need to be configured manually in the new router.  Do you remember getting the new router and configuring port forwarding for the camera's?   do you know what ports need to be forwarded?
I would recommend reconnecting the old router, so that you can get the settings you need copied.   The old router does not need to connect to the internet to do this, in fact simply turn it on (don't need to disconnect your new router, or even hook up coax to it) and then connect to your old wireless.
Go into the configuration pages and copy the settings you need from your port forward menu.
If you aren't familiar with how to port forward you can use these instructions here.

  • Network Extender stopped working with new FIOS Quantum router

I have had a Network Extender for a few years (the older 1x model, SCS-26UC4) but it stopped working when I upgraded to FIOS Quantum.  That upgrade included a new router.
I have opened the TCP (53, 52428) and UDP (500, 4500, 52428) ports on the router without much luck.
The Network Extended does seem to work if I bypass the FIOS router and connect the Network Extender directly to the WAN.  So it seems the issue is in the router configuration.
All lights are blue except for the SYS light, which cycles from fast red blink, slow red blink, steady red and then blue for a while.  When it's blue the extender works (which I can tell by the sound my phone makes when it connects via the Extender).  But then it goes back to red.
One thought I had was to open a DMZ on the router but I cannot find the instructions.  It's the Actiontec MI424WR router.
    Help appreciated.

Try page 83 in the user guide for the DMZ.
Call Verizon Communications and tell them your Verizon Wireless Network Extender does not work when connected to the router, but it does work when connected directly to the ONT. You shouldn’t have to use a kludge (DMZ) to make it work, the router should be smart enough to figure it out.

  • Can time capsule replace the Verizon MI424WR router as router?

  • My Verizon MI424WR router resets and drops all client connections without my intervention

I have noticed my devices lose their Verizon MI424WR router and Internet connection (wired and wireless alike) for some time now (months) on a regular basis. Sometimes multiple times a day and at different times of the day. You typically have to be actively using a device to notice these events. I have one client that will display an "Internet Connection Restored" message until I return to view it and I can see that this happens quite frequently overnight when there is minimal Internet usage. During a recent "outage" I quickly ran to the router to find it was in the process of rebooting, however, I did not perform any direct actions (e.g., cycling the power or applying admin config changes) that would have caused it.
What is/could be the cause of this? Is Verizon support pushing silent router maintenance updates that require resets? Am I exceeding the maximum TCP connections the firmware will allow before faulting to reboot? I require high availability and uninterrupted connections and would prefer to know the routers limitations or when any remote automated maintenance requiring resets will be occurring if that is in fact the cause.

My router routinely runs for months between resets, which are caused by me needing to move a cable or a similar.  Only once did I notice a reset due to a Verizon update, and that was when the firmware was updated a year or so ago.
You can check the router's up time on the "system monitoring" web page.  This will let you know when the last reset occurred.
You should not see resets unless you cause them.  The symptoms you describe are not typical.  You might need a new router.  If you think so, contact Verizon support.
    Good Luck.

  • Remote restart for a Mac using FileVault 2 encryption?

Does anyone know of a way to perform a remote restart for a Mac using FileVault 2 encryption?  I have some remote Macs for which I'd like to enable full disk encryption with FileVault, but would prefer not to make a physical trip to those machines whenever they need a reboot.  I strongly suspect the answer to this question is "No", without some form of IP KVM, but I figured I'd double-check.  If anyone knows of any reasonably priced Mac-compatible KVMs that would be great too.  Thanks.

    Does anyone have an answer?

  • Yoga 13 - Wifi Issue with Verizon FIOS Advanced Router

In an effort to boost the Internet Speed for my wireless devices in my house I upgraded my Verizon FIOS router to their Advanced Router. I had noticed that all of my Wireless Devices were unable to get any more speed than 25/25, when I get 75/35 to my home. I discovered that my router was the issue. So I upgraded and was instantly able to reconnect all of my wireless devices and laptops without any issue, except my Lenovo Yoga 13. It kept getting an error that it could not login to the SSID I would give it. It would see it, but when I put in the password it would fail to connect andd give me a message indicating the same. So I thought I may need to download a newer driver. The Yoga would still attach to my hotspot, so I downloaded the latest WLAN driver. It still would not work, but I notced that it did not dump the old driver, so I deleted it and then I could not attach at all to anything. So I used another unit downloaded all off the WIreless and Bluetooth drivers I could find on the Lenovo site for Windows 8.1 and loaded them back up. I am now able to login to my new router but I get worse speeds than I did before. Now I get 10/20. But I also saw that there are now a bunch of bluetooth and wireless drivers in loaded in control panel, so before I delete any, do I need them all? Are they stepping on each other? What ones are definitely needed? Has anyone gotten anymore than 25/25 out of the Lenovo drivers? And did they ever succeed in hooking it up to a Verizon FIOS Advanced Router?
    Let me know!
    Thanks!

I went into the router and set a static IP address for the ipad (in the low 200's dont use the 100's its for your fios cable dvr's). You will first have to shutdown the ipad (not just sleep). Then delete the ipad from the connection list in the fios router. The instructions from the fios router pdf are below. I am on 24 hrs and even with wep and no fixed channel I have had no problems.
To define a new connection with a fixed IP address:
    1. Click New Static Connection in the DHCP Connections screen. The “DHCP Connection Settings” screen appears.
    2. Enter a host name for this connection.
    3. Enter the fixed IP address to assign to the computer.
    4. Enter the MAC address of the computer’s network card.
    5. Click the OK to save changes.
☞ Note: A device’s fixed IP address is actually assigned to the specific
network card’s MAC address installed on the network computer.
If this network card is replaced, the device’s entry in the DHCP Connections list must be updated with the new network card’s MAC address.
To remove a host from the table, click the appropriate “Delete” icon in the Action column.

  • Automatic reset of ActionTec MI424WR router

Has anyone experienced an auto-reset of the MI424WR router?  Two days ago, my router stopped connecting with the wireless devices on my home network, and I ultimately determined that the router had reset --- on its own --- to the default settings.  I had to input my security and other settings again to enable my wireless printer and laptops to access the network and the Internet.  What could make this happen?  We did not touch the reset button on the back of the router or use the web interface with the browser to reset it to the default configuration.

or it is not unheard of for a power outage or power surge to cause a reset.  I save a copy of my configuration file (regularly) to my computer (I just overwrite the last one) so that if that happens I can easily restore it in just a few clicks of the mouse.

  • Issues with FIOS modem/router's wireless and multiple devices connected to the WLAN?

I am an IT consultant who was assisting someone with getting some devices connected to the fios wireless router and adding a wireless print server so they could print wirelesly.
I was having difficulty with one of their systems that was connected prior to me going on site.
It was having difficulty obtaining an IP from the WLAN, i tried reinstalling the adapter, removing stored wlan settings and setting it up again, etc.
When it did obtain an IP it could not ping the router.
I had left it suggesting that they replace the wireless adapter on that system.
However they're saying that after they shut down one of their other devices that i had connected (a netbook), that this problematic system started working fine.
It makes no sense that a wireless client would have an impact on another wireless client. We're only talking 4 total devices here, a netbook, a laptop, a wireless print server and a desktop in another area of the house that has a usb wireless adapter.
Does anyone have any ideas on if Verizon's wireless built in to the fios modem/router just isn't too good to handle multiple wireless devices?
After hearing this i was thinking they might have been better off configuring the fios router as a bridge and getting a better wireless router or shutting off the fios supplied wifi and implementing a wireless access point instead of using the router/modem that verizon provides.

By bridge I mean in the sense you see some of the early DSL setups configured before they started using multiport routers -- essentially bridging the WAN MoCA port to the LAN ethernet.   The ActionTEC's won't do that.   This is what I think most are seeking to do when they want to turn the device into a "bridge" (essentially making the Verizon unit "transparent" to the communication which in this scenario it can't be).  You can do as suggested an turn the ActionTEC into essentially a "switch/bridge" that is only bridging the MoCA LAN and Ethernet LAN segments, but this then requires you to have an ethernet WAN feed from the ONT ... and as indicated, it is definitely not a "supported" configuration from Verizon (although there is nothing "wrong" with doing it this way if you are comfortable with networking and understanding the mechanics of all that is going on -- if not, sticking with a supported configuration is highly advisable).
