Replaced hard drive, can't reinstall

So I have an Inspiron 1525.  Replaced the hard drive on it, and now I can't get Arch to boot properly.  Got everything reinstalled without an issue, booted fine for all that, all the firmware and drivers that don't automatically work (xf86-input-synaptics, xf86-video-intel, linux-firmware) but when I reboot, it boots to a black screen.  Now the really odd thing, is that it's still set to boot runlevel 3, so it shouldn't even be trying to do anything X related.  And NONE of the ctl-alt-F1 through F12 are able to access a terminal, it just stays a blank black screen.  Ctl-Alt-Bkspc doesn't do anything, as Ctl-Alt-Del does nothing either.  The ONLY way I can get in is to pass the S argument on the kernel line.
This laptop used to work fantastically with Arch.
Specs:
C2D T8100, 3 GB ram, 160 GB hdd.  Intel X3100 graphics.  Intel 3945 wireless.
I know it's not a hardware issue, Win7 and Debian Squeeze are both on this box and working wonderfully without a single hiccup.

Ok, quick history of install.
Boot, install, reboot to get into system.
pacman -Syu, update pacman.  pacman -Syu again, update system.  Saw kernel updated, rebooted to take effet.
pacman -S <all the various software I use>.  rebooted.  At this point, no config files have been touched.
Couldn't get in, issue as described.  Tried passing 3, no change, tried passing 2, no change.  Tried passing S, was able to get in.
Rebooted a few times after looking at various things, it would usually take between 3-4 tries passing S that I was able to get in, not EVERY time, but often enough that it wasn't a huge deal.
So it started as soon as X was installed (amongst a bunch of other software), but X shouldn't have been doing anything.  I point out X because it ACTS like X when it fails to load.

  • Logic pro 9- had to reformat hard drive, can't reinstall on 10.6?

So I've seen a variation of this asked, but no one has explained what to do. I recently had to reformat my corrupted hard drive and install 10.6 (I had 10.5), but when I went to reinstall Logic Pro 9 (with the actual DVD's) it said an Installation error had occurred and stops. I've seen someone say you can get a replacement installation package, but how if I can't contact apple about it? If not, anything else I can do?
    Really need some help!
    Thanks,
    JD

Telephone AppleCare and Explain your are a Logic User... you should then be transfered to a Product Specialist who will be able to Assist you and supply New Discs if that is Determined to be necessary.
Be sure to have Logics Serial Number and Purchase Date handy.

  • Replaced hard drive can't install OSX

A friend gave me an iBook G3 500 MgHz. I want it to coordinate with my iMac G5 to be able to use same Tiger software. I put in 640 MB of Ram, then installed OSX 10.4. Everything OK but the modem was broke and there was not much room on HD. So I bought new 80Gig Toshiba HD and new modem, did the surgery using excellent iFixit instructions and went to reinstall OSX from my cds. The computer works if I start it with OSX installer cd, and the disk utility and System Profiler show the hard drive properly,
BUT WHEN I START THE INSTALLER THE HARD DRIVE DOESN'T SHOW UP AS THE DESTINATION DRIVE,NOTHING SHOWS UP AS A POSSIBLE DESTINATION DRIVE.
DID I MISS A MAJOR STEP TO PREPARE THE COMPUTER FOR A NEW HD? IS THERE SOMETHING I CAN DO WITH DISK UTILITY TO MAKE IT SHOW UP?
    HELP

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
In a Mac, it's called Open Firmware, and you get there by holding down the Command (Apple) Key + Option + o + f.
If it's a G4 (and it sounds like it is because the G3's have tray-loading optical drives), you may want to try posting in the iBook G4 Forum.
You have posted in the iBook G3 (Dual USB) Forum.
Also, an iBook G4 will not have version OS X 10.1.x (that version of the operating system is too old for an iBook G4), so you may want to check that information.

  • 2007 iMac, replaced hard drive, can't recover old files from old hard drive!

So I have a 2007 intell imac, the hard drive went out, I replaced it and bought a thermalake blacx hard drive doc to get my files off the old hard drive.  I run Disk Utility, it can see the old hard drive but it can't repair it or verify it.  Do I need to get a third party to get the info off hte old hard drive??? HELP!!!HELP!!!!!

You could use a data recovery service but that's going to be really expensive. You could also try a data recovery software like DataRescue III http://store.apple.com/us/product/TX415LL/A/prosoft-data-rescue-3
    Or DiskWarrior http://www.alsoft.com/diskwarrior/
Either might help, I prefer DiskWarrior, but it's also possible that neither will. A hard lesson learned regarding backups I suppose.

  • Replaced hard drive, can't start up

I replaced my original hard drive in my 2.16GHz Mac Book pro with a brand new WD scorpio blue 320GB SATA hard drive.
When I start up the computer, I get the flashing folder with the question mark. So I then put in the 10.6 install disk, hit restart, and hold down the C key and it doesn't load off of the CD, I get the flashing folder again.
    What am I doing wrong?

Well, I threw in the towel and re-installed the original HD. It's already back up and running.
I'm guessing that maybe because I didn't set the jumper connections correctly it somehow interfered with booting off of the 10.6 install disk.
I may attempt this one more time since I can take it apart and put it back together again in about 10 minutes. But I'm going to research this HD and OS X and the jumper settings and see if I can find anything where somebody else had the same issue with booting off the install disk until they set the correct jumpers.
Thanks everybody for your suggestions. Have a great weekend...

I was abble to save the files and apps of that HD, but the app store purchased apps won't work on the new HD
    No guarantees but try this...
Launch iTunes. From the iTunes menu bar top of your screen click Store > Authorize This Computer
    Quit iTunes.
See if that made a difference...

  • My hard drive was replaced last week.  The geek squad from Best Buy backed up all my information prior to replacing the hard drive.  they reinstalled everything on the new hard drive including iTunes.  When I opened I tunes, my playlists were missing

My hard drive was replaced last week on my macbook pro.  The geek squad from Best Buy backed up all my information prior to replacing the hard drive.  They reinstalled everything on the new hard drive including iTunes.  When I opened I tunes, i had some but not all my songs listed.  All my playlists and purchases were missing.  I attempted to sync my iPod so my playlist and information would be reinstalled but iTunes does not recognize the iPod to allow it to sync.

    Hello Boylen33,
I was very disappointed to read about your experience when taking your phone in to the Geek Squad for service. I agree with avm5689, purchasing the Geek Squad Protection plan is a great way to protect your investment in a product that is so necessary to our everyday lives. The agent should have known exactly what steps to make the exchange an easy, and smooth process, and I sincerely apologize for the frustrating experience you received instead.
I assure you every single post on the forum from our customers is of utmost importance to us, and we are always happy to help in anyway we can. As per the terms and conditions of your Geek Squad Protection plan, you should receive one battery per the life of the plan, and you can order it simply by calling our Partstore. As I mentioned previously, this is something the Geek Squad agent should have explained to you, or as the mobile specialist did, call them for you, and I'm truly sorry this wasn't handled in that manner causing you to waste a lot of time at the store.  Using the e-mail you registered on the forum, I was able to locate the service order, and I will be documenting your experience for further training opportunities.
Once again, I am very sorry for any disappointment this has caused, and I appreciate very much you bringing this to our attention. I hope you will give us another in chance to offer you a much better experience.
    Respectfully,

  • How do I reinstall CS6 Extended 64-bit after replacing hard drive and OS?

How do I reinstall CS6 Extended 64-bit after replacing hard drive and Windows 7 64-bit OS?

You can download the trial installer directly. Find the appropriate link below.
You must be on a trial download page to use the links, otherwise you get an error message.
For example, load the following page: http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/tdrc/index.cfm?product=photoshop_elements&loc=us
before pasting the link into the address bar.
    http://trials2.adobe.com/AdobeProducts/PHSP/13/win32/Photoshop_13_LS16.7z
    http://trials2.adobe.com/AdobeProducts/PHSP/13/win32/Photoshop_13_LS16.exe
You need to kepp both files downloaded into same folder and after download click on .exe file to extract .7z

I went to Mac Store and had replaced hard drive because I encountered 4HDD ERROR(hard drive failure). I had backed up my old hard drive by TIME MACHINE regularly. Now how can I restore everything I had?

    Thanks for your response.
I had tried COMMAND+ALT+R which led me to directly to INTERNET RECOVERY via wifi. After 1 hour or so it dropped me at the same point.
I've tried MIGRANT ASSISTANCE as well, it kept on LOOKING FOR OTHER COMPUTERS even though I clicked on TIME MACHINE BACK UP USING EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE
    so what to do now?
P.S. Guys at MacStore were so careless to even listen to me when I asked them about retrieving back up :(
    Please help

  • I have an iMac 21.5 inch purchased in 2011 with a failing 1TB Seagate hard drive. Can I get a replacement hard drive?

I have an iMac 21.5 inch purchased in 2011 with a failing 1TB Seagate hard drive. Can I get a replacement hard drive thru the Apple Replacement Program? I did purchase the Applecare Plan but it expired in Dec. 2013.

FWIW, if you purchased the iMac in 2011 and purchased Applecare, you are covered for a total of 3 years. You mentioned yours expired in December 2013 - that cannot be unless you bought yours in 2010. If you bought it in December 2011, you should still be covered until December 2014 - if so, contact Apple/make a Genius Bar appointment quickly so the replacement is covered by the warranty. The hard drive replacement program might have expired, but as long as you're covered by Applecare, a drive replacement is covered.

  • I work for a university and we have a legal apple vendor. Can we re-install macosx for a replacement hard drive for a old macbook?Just one example.

I work for a university and we have a legal apple vendor who we get to buy all our Apple products from. Can we (university) re-install macosx for a replacement hard drive once the hard drive gets replaced? How can we as the university IT department legally re-install macosx on a imac, macbook, macbookair etc. We would like to load customized macosx imaging software onto the mac machines(imac, macbook, etc ). The university has its own IT workshop and we would like our users to get their laptops back in the shortest turnaround time.

We're not "Apple Inc." here, just users like you.
So whatever we say is not an official statement, nor does it in any way, shape, or form represent the official or unofficial policies or opinions of Apple, Inc.
But I'll offer my quick opinion, having worked in information-systems and technology support in a wide variety of environments over many years.
    Question #1. "NO!"
No tech support nor repair facility, even if "Apple-authorized", is automatically empowered to install or upgrade OS X on a replacement hard drive just because it is more convenient or time-efficient. When the repair is complete, the student should be expected to (re)install the operating system themself*!
Nurturing students (and occasionally dragging them, screaming and kicking!) as budding computer-, tablet-, smartphone-users to become digitally self-sufficient is a worthy goal that any institution of higher education must pursue.
Making students totally dependent upon "Mother Support" for every little thing about their personal digital devices is a grave disservice to both the students and the people who provide the support. Support-mothered students do become life-long digital dependents, instead of taking the required time to learn enough about the care and feeding of their digital "pets" to sustain them. Entreprenurial students may choose to become 'experts' and actually help each other with their devices, and even make money doing it. Some students may even be inspired/coerced to pursue a career in tech support!!!
*By all means, if the student requests additional help (re-installing the OS), then the University should charge the student a fair price for the service, provided that the user provides the OS on original or upgrade media, or in the case of the 'digital download' upgrades (for OS X 10.7 and 10.8) provides proof of purchase for the OS upgrade, or the original purchase receipt or other recognized documentation for the purchase of the computer showing the version of OS installed when purchased. Students need to learn about personal responsibility, economics ("What is MY time really worth"?), and proper record-keeping too!
Question #2. Regarding the customized imaging software, provide it on media or a link for students to download and install it. Make it their responsibility!

  • Since replacing hard drive, "restore previous session" button doesn't work, can only do it through history tab. Also will not start up from task bar icon.

Hi, been using Firefox for some years, had to replace hard drive recently and re loaded Firefox. Since then, the restore previous session button doesn't work, but I can do it from the History tab. Also Firefox itself won't start from the task bar or desktop, only the start menu.

This function may not be available for mobile yet. You can put your suggestions to the [[Suggestion Box]]. Thanks!

  • Replaced dying hard drive, can't boot into installer

    Well, this is always fun.
My hard drive was dieing in my 12-inch Powerbook (last-model, I believe), so I ordered a bigger one and just finished installing it.
So, I try to boot to my 10.5 installer disk, and it gets to the Apple logo for about a minute, occasional DVD drive noise, and then freezes. Even the little spinny thing stops spinning. Sometimes there are vertical, dotted lines running through the darker areas, sometimes not.
It was doing this when my previous hard drive was dieing, and that was on 10.4. I can now and could then log into single-user mode, but no GUI. I've tried everything I can think of, and nothing's worked thus far.
Any help? My laptop is completely dead without an OS, and I've got school work and a programming internship that largely rely on my laptop.

    sheez
I'm really ashamed of these forums. Doesn't anyone here even know how to ask intelligent questions?
I managed to rip apart some of the info from the Single User mode, purchased a new set of OS disks, ran the hardware test, and discovered the video RAM had failed the test.
ANY of those should have been suggested by someone with some repair knowledge. Non-booting? Did you ask about the hardware test built into the OS disks? Noooo, I had to find that out , and run it, myself. Problem not solved by replacing hard drive? Gee...
Strange vertical lines on a boot screen where there shouldn't be any? Mayhaps it's video related? Hmmm? Even if you were wrong, it'd have been SOMETHING to try, instead of silence.
Maybe I should just amble around here and show you people how to help people. I've had almost NO help (often no replies, either) for most of my questions on this forum, despite offering more information than most, and I ultimately have solved most of them myself, when they didn't resolve themselves.
