Replacing a simple + sign

Question

I've been trying to figure out this whole regular expression thing and I'm having some difficulty.
I have a String with any number of + signs in the String. I simply want to replace all of those + signs with spaces.
I've tried .replaceAll("\\+", " "); and that doesn't work :(

I wasn't implying that String.replace(...) altered the original String, but reading my reply back, I can see how that might look like it. Bad wording on my part. I meant to say that instead of doing:
String original = "a+b+c";
original = original.replaceAll("\\+", " ");the OP could could simply do:
original = original.replace("+", " ");
