Replacing trackpad in iBook G4

Anyone know how expensive this would be (say, if I had the Apple geniuses do it)? My trackpad has occasionally just died (restarting fixes it), but now is behaving erratically - cursor randomly jumps all over the screen. I'm wondering if it's worth it to fix.
Thanks!

Have you tried resetting the PMU?
The PMU (Power Management Unit) controls trackpad function, so resetting it often helps when the trackpad isn't working (or isn't working right).

  • Where can i buy a replacement trackpad for my macbook pro with retina display

recently the new force touch trackpad is out and I'm really excited about it and sometimes my multi-touch trackpad is a little glitchy so I'm wondering is there any place to buy a replacement trackpad for my macbook like multi-touch or force click trackpad replacement

My guess is they wouldn't introduce new production line just for the 1 or two milimeter difference. They will probably just change their marketing material and websites to add Retina as compatible. Then again I'm not a manufacturer.
In reality though, apart from hard-shell cases/sheilds that have to attach directly on the laptop, the cases and sleeves are already compatible.

  • Replacement keyboard for iBook G4 (M9419LL/A) 1.2GHz, 14"

I've seen three different P/Ns listed for iBook keyboards:
    922-6637 (Late 2004)
    922-6189 (Early 2004)
922-6913 (where does this one work)
I'm having difficulty locating any 922-6189 keyboards.
    Does P/N 922-6913 support my (early 2004, M9419LL/A) G4, 1.2GHz, 14" iBook?
    Thanks!

Hi and welcome, I looked at some of the more popular repair and part houses and it appears that all three are reconized as replacements for the iBook G4 early 2004 model. It might be just a slight color or transparency thing. You could do some more searching by just google-ing 922-6189.
Here is a offer from ebay:

  • No Wireless signal After LCD Replacement on My iBook G4

My iBook G4 had a broken screen so I bought the LCD display and replaced the screen. But now my Airport gets no signal. I know I didn't break anything on the card nor the antenna. Any ideas???

I had the hard drive replaced on my iBook and Airport stopped working. Turns out they needed to remove the Airport card to get at the hard drive, and forgot to plug the airport card back in. Opened the case, plugged it back in and it works like a charm.

  • Replacement Keyboard for iBook G4

The "a" and "n" keys on my wife's iBook G4 have worn off. Where can I get a replacement key board?
    Thanks

You should be able to get a keyboard from one of these sources:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/
    http://www.powerbookmedic.com/
It may even be possible to get one directly from Apple.
However, it might be more cost effective to just replace the keycaps that are worn or to apply a peel and stick decal. In addition to the above sources, you might look for a local Apple authorized repair service. If they have a parts machine or two, you might be able to get the keycaps for very little money.
    Good luck!

  • Where to get replacement feet for iBook G4?

Hi, sorry if this is a stupid question, but I'm trying to find replacement rubber feet for my iBook G4. I've lost two of them, and when I use it the computer's heating up. It also moves about when I've got it on a smooth surface. I've been into a number of Apple dealerships, and they tell me that the feet are not available as spare parts. I can't find them listed in the Apple Store either. Am I missing something obvious?
    Glyn

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
The most reasonable place I've found is MicroDoc in Eugene, Oregon. They do ship internationally.
If you are fairly close to an Apple Store, sometimes they do have them on hand where a reseller doesn't. I've even heard of Apple Stores on this side of the Pond replacing them free of charge.
    Good luck.

  • How much does Apple charge to replace trackpad?

    Hello,
Could someone please tell me how much Apple charges to replace a trackpad for a 2009 Macbook (white unibody, model 6,1)?  The Apple stores won't tell me on the phone.  I'm trying to decide if it's less expensive to do it myself, once I factor in time and parts.
    Thanks,
    Ira

Call your local Apple Store or take your computer in for an estimate. We can't give you an answer.

  • Replacing Trackpad (completely broken) - what's a ballpark figure?

Recently broke the trackpad completely on my Macbook (see specs below) - what's a ballpark figure I'm looking at to replace it.
It's still under the first year of Applecare, but I am doubtful that it covers such an extreme issue (it's destroyed/cracked from an excessive weight being applied to it) - so is it still better to have an Apple Store fix it? Would it be cheaper to have someone else fix it (there's an Authorized repair place here)? Would buying a part be cheaper?
I'm asking because I can still use a usb mouse to use the computer. If the cost is too high I will just forgo the trackpad altogether.
    Thanks. RIP trackpad.

Just thought I'd clarify some thing here - were you positive the person you heard getting one, was for the Unibody Aluminum Macbook (single button trackpad), or for one of the older plastic models (that had a trackpad+button)?
I ask because the part you linked would be for the older version, and when I looked elsewhere on the site, the same part for my machine is in fact $300.
Will still take it to the store to have them give me a definite, just wanted to be sure what I'm getting into.
Thanks again, if you aren't sure what the other customer had that day, no biggie, just trying to get a little info ahead of time

  • 9300 Replacement Trackpad

    Hey Guys,
I've been having issues with the trackpad on my curve 9300. No matter which way I want to scroll the trackpad will always scroll up to the top of the screen. My Bro-in -Law had a spare one which I fitted, it worked until I held the "A" key to lock the keyboard, when I un-locked the k/board the trackpad had stopped working?
Had enough, so ordered a new trackpad from eBay (£3.85) which arrived this morning. Fitted it, booted up device, and it don't work!!?? The 'click' function works but nothing at all from the scroll.
It looks the same.... The numbers on the replacement are: 10421-16 on the up side, and underneath: HDW-27779-041 which mean nowt to me. Do any of y'all know if that's the right one?
    Cheers in advance,
    Chris

If anyone else was wanting an answer to this post, I found a website where you can order replacement parts for macs and iPods (including the case/trackpad that I was wanting): www.ifixit.com
But, the replacement case/trackpad is $140 so I'm going to continue looking for a cheaper alternative.

  • Replace 1.2GHz iBook G4 14" Logic Board with 1.42GHz?

    Hi everybody!
I have an almost 2 years old iBook G4 14" 1.2GHz. Or better said - had. The logic board died some weeks ago.
My main point here is to find out if I can replace the faulty Logic Board with something faster, i.e. 1.33 or 1.42 GHz. I have heard some rummours that the cooling systems are a bit different and I am affraid that a faster Logic Board won't fit.
Any suggestions? I would appreciate all comments on the topic.
I also wonder if anybody else has seen the same Logic Board problem. Strangely enough, it shows the symptoms of a dead fan, even though the cooling system is passive, i.e. whe the computer is cool it may even boot the system and let me log in, while when it's already warm, it dies in the middle of the startup.
If I boot the machine in target disk mode, it may run for days. Sometimes though, it may show some video problems: after being operational for some time, the FireWire symbol may freeze. I've noticed, that if I bend the bottom of the iBook a bit the symbol may start going again. Sometimes the display may go completely black. If, in that case, I bend the bottom a bit, a strange video-check-like sequence starts, i.e. going through black, white, red, green, blue and some patterns. At the end of the sequence the FireWire image may be restored.
I have checked all detachable components, i.e. extra RAM and AirPort and I am sure that they work perfectly. It is also worth noting, that the laptop may work several days in single user mode.
Thanks in advance for all comments!
    Ventzi

Well, that's exactly what I thought first, but we are talking about an iBook here. That meens, that the 'video card' is actually only a chip soldered on the logic board and the fan turns on only when the computer has reached around 65-70°C.
And I cannot say that it boots OS X...
If the laptop is cold, i.e. has been off for a while, it may boot as far as the login screen. If I then log in, it will halt while still loading the menus.
If the laptop is already warm, e.g. booting it for a second time, it won't even get to the login screen. Usually it halts right after changing the grey screen to a blue one.
And this is NOT a software problem – I experience the same behaviour when booting from the installation DVD.
Interestingly engough, though, the laptop can run for days without any problems if started in single user mode (the text interface) or in target disk mode...
I've taken it all apart and I am certain, that the preriferal devices work.
About the AHT. If the computer is cold, the Extended AHT will pass without any problems. I the computer is warm, on the other hand, AHT will either not load at all, or will halt at some point without any error message...
    Thanks for the help!
I hope that we can resolve this issue.

  • Time to replace battery or iBook?

My iBook G4 800 is a little over 2 years old now. I noticed about a few months ago that once I disconnected the power adapter from the iBook, it will quickly lose its charge (about 45-hour) and by the time the power level reaches around...30-50% give or take...it suddenly just shuts down with no warning. So I'm unable to really calibrate the battery because I can't get to the sleeping mode point if my battery is failing on me by the time it reaches it.
Once it shuts down..I need to plug in the power adapter and press the power button to restart the machine. So I was wondering...has the time come to replace the battery? (2+ years seems like it would be time to so) or is the problem more related to the actual iBook?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
    iBook   Mac OS X (10.4)

    Luis,
You can still use the battery but keep in mind: showing a 100% capacity in the Finder's menu bar actually means only 39%. The capacity will wind down accordingly faster so have a look on the battery status and let the % rate be shown. A replacement may be necessary but you can keep one battery as reserve and exchange the two now and then to keep them alive.

  • Replacing Monitor on ibook

    Hi:
A friend of mine dropped her ibook G4 and the monitor stopped working. Took it to the Apple store and they said it was just the monitor. Not wanting to pay the amount that Apple quoted, she purchased an LCD screen on ebay. She talked to the person selling and said that it would work with her model.
She received one and it was installed, but it just blank blue. She assumed it was defective and returned and they just sent another. Same problem.
So my question, does the actual manufacturer of the screen important?
This is what she sent me:
"Either your MAC does not like this LCD or you have to get the same LCD.
The one they sent you is:  Samsung LTN121X1-L02
The one that broke is: CHI MEI N121X5-L03 Rev C1"
Thanks for your help and insight!

PowerBook G3 Pismo (Firewire)   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

Jason, I'm not sure, I'm just going to piggyback on your question - how much do the LCDs differe between models, and how can you find out what kind of LCD is installed on the machine?
    Good luck to your friend!

  • Can I physically replace a 12" iBook G3 french keyboard to a 14" G4 iBook?

    Hi,
I have a dead 12" G3 iBook with a french keyboard (600MHz, late 2001). I would like to transfer the G3 keyboard to a G4 iBook (1.42GHz, 14" screen) that have an english keyboard. Both keyboards are the same dimensions. Can I just switch the keyboard from the G3 to the G4?

Unfortunately, I don't think so. I checked with PowerBook Medic, and it appears that if you want to order a keyboard, you have to specify if it is for a G3 or a G4 and if it is for a 12" or a 14". They may look the same on the top, but I think the cabling may be different underneath. It shouldn't be too difficult to look and see.
    Good luck!

Not sure what to check.  Suggestions?

I fixed it!!!  I found out that the camera cable from the display also connects the wifi and bt boards.  I fired up the unit and checked the camera.  No camera input.  I didn't have it seated correctly on the board.
