Report Builder 2012 - Omit Certain Fields

I'm using SQL Server Report Builder 2012 to make a bar chart from a query I ran off. The table is great but the nature of it causes some problems in Report Builder without some tweaking which I've never used before (new to SQL in fact). Apologies for what
is a difficult question to put into words and in fact took me a while to grasp in my mind.
I've got a table with three date fields in it:
REC_NO OPEN IN_PROGRESS CLOSED
000111 01/01/2000 01/01/2000 01/01/2000
000112 01/01/2000
000113 01/01/2000 01/01/2000
If there's a value in OPEN in all three cases in the above then it will count that three records are open. However, one is CLOSED and one is IN_PROGRESS. In the case above, record 00111 is closed, 000112 is open and 000113 is in progress.
My question is, is there a way to filter the results of a query in Report Builder 2012 so that if a field is populated, not to use the previous in the chart? E.g. if IN_PROGRESS is populated but CLOSED isn't, don't use OPEN.
I know that was probably a very convoluted and difficult explanation but I don't know how else to explain it.
Thanks in advance
Adam

Hi Adam-M,
As per my understanding, there are four fields in the table, three fields’ data type is date. You want to add a field named status, when all the three fields have values, the status is closed, if only Open field has value, the status is open, else, the status
is in_progress. You want to create a bar chart using Report Builder 3.0, the data of status displays on x-axis and count of status displays on y-axis. If so, we can achieve your goal using reporting service. Please refer to the following steps:
1. In the left pane in Report Builder, verify that New Report is selected.
2. In the right pane, click Chart Wizard.
3. On the Choose a dataset page, click Create a dataset, and then select an existing data source or browse to the report server and select a data source, then paste your query into the query pane.
4. On the Choose a chart type page, the column chart is the default chart type. Click Bar, and then click Next.
5. Right click the dataset used to retrieve data and click Add Calculated field, type Status in the field name text box, click the expression (Fx) button, then type the following expression:
=IIf(IsNothing(Fields!CLOSED.Value)=0 and IsNothing(Fields!IN_PROGRESS.Value)=0,"CLOSED",IIF((Fields!CLOSED.Value)IS NOTHING AND ISNOTHING(Fields!IN_PROGRESS.Value)=0,"IN_PROGRESS","OPEN"))
6. Drag Status to the Categories pane.
7. Drag Status to the Values pane. The Values pane displays [Sum(Status)] because the chart displays the aggregate for each status, click the arrow right to the aggregation, click Expression and type the expression:
=Count(Fields!Status.Value)
8. Click Run to preview the report.

  • Will Report Builder 2012 Work with SQL Server 2008???

    Simple question really
Will Report Builder 2012 work in conjunction with SQL Server 2008???
    Is it worth while upgrading?
The main reason i ask is the ability to export in an xlsx format
    Thanks

    Hi Gmach,
The version of Report Builder on SQL Server Reporting Service (SSRS) 2012 is Report Builder 3.0. The Report Builder 3.0 manufactures 2010 RDL reports, so it only works with the version of SQL Server 2008 R2 or later. So in your scenario, we can no connect
to SQL Server 2008 Server using Report Builder that on SSRS 2012.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that you could not launch report builder in the client machine.
Did you install the .Net 4.0 framework on your machine?
.Net 4.0 framework needed to be installed on each user's machine, you can install it, then check whether it works.

  • SSRS 2012 - Multiple values for filtering (shown while editing in Report Builder) disappear in Report Manager view

    Hi,
I have a multiple value parameter, with four specified default values (integers). When opening my report in Edit mode in the Report
Builder, and then pressing "run", I can see the default parameters in the upper section on the screen, and they are acting fine on the report. However, when opening the report from the Report
Manager (by double clicking it from there), the default values have disappeared and I have to fill them in manually. However, the values are not 100% forgotten, because when opening the "manage" section using the drop down
menu in the Report Manager, my default values are there, shown in the list.
Did I do something wrong? Is this a bug? What can I do to solve this?
    Nb.:
    I'm using SSRS 2012
Dataset created by the query "select parameterID from table group by parameterID"
The full set of parameters are collected by using the above dataset as input for "get values from a query" in "available values"
The default values are set by using the option "specify values" in "default values"
Hope one of you can help me out here!
    Sietske
Nb.: For the time being I'm now using a hard coded workaround by adding "where parameterID ='4' or parameterID = '15'" to my select query.

    Hi Sietske,
According to your description, there are several suggestions for your reference:
Based on the workaround query that “where parameterID ='4' or parameterID = '15'”, it seems that the parameterID and parameter is a string type field. So please make sure the default value of the parameter is Text data type, like below:
When you go to the Parameters tab after clicking the Manage option over the drop-down list, please enable ‘Has Default’ checkbox, and make sure the values in the ‘Default Value’ drop-down list are correct, then click Apply option.
If the report works well when you open the report in Report Builder, please click Save or (Ctrl+S) button to save the report to report server.
If there are any other questions, please feel free to ask.

  • Report Builder: ContentType Field shows always "System.Byte[]"

    Hello Community!
    I use the following systems:
    SharePoint 2013
SQL Server 2012 Report Builder 3.0
So, I have a SharePoint List with some columns (Responsible Person, Serial Number, Content Type).
Responsible Person and Serial Number is displayed correctly. But in the field Content Type, I have seen "System.Byte[]" instead of the realy value of Content Type.
When I execute query, I have seen realy value of the field Content Type!
    Could anybody help me?
Thanks a lot und greets from austria!
    Daniel

    Hi Daniel ,
According to your description, when you use SharePoint list as data source, the Content Type display as "System.Byte[]" instead of real value when running the report.
As we tested in our environment, Content Type can display correctly both in query designer and preview results. Please refer to our test results below to check if you design the report correctly:
    1. Type the query in dataset like below:
    2. Run the report:
Besides, it has reported the same issue with Content Type. In your scenario, please also try to use XML data source to connect to SharePoint list to retrieve data. For more information, please refer to this similar thread:
Reporting: ContentType Field Value always "System.Byte[]". If issue persists, please create the same report in SSDT and run the report, then check if there are warning messages in output.
If you have any question, please feel free to ask.

  • Updaing SQL 2005 Report Builder Reports (based on Report Models) to SQL 2012 Report Builder Reports?

We are upgrading from SQL 2005 to SQL 2012 directly (no SQL 2008 to be installed).  We have many SSRS Reports written in Report Builder 1.0 against Report Models generated from an OLAP datasource.  In SQL 2012, Report Models can no longer
be created or edited.  I have found many posts on this topic, including this:
http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/896522da-45c3-46c0-848a-16f8f02ab051/how-to-upgrade-report-models-from-report-builder-1020-to-30. which the 'answered' response states:
SQL Server 2012 Reporting Services does not include tools for creating or updating report models. Although you can continue
to use existing report models as data sources in SQL Server 2012 Reporting Services reports you should consider updating your reports to remove their dependency on report models.
But I cannot locate any instructions/documentation, etc. on how to go about "updating your reports to remove
their dependency on report models.".  How do I take existing Report Builder 1.0 reports that point to Report Models and upgrade them to the new SQL 2012 without Report Models?  Is there a way to convert them?  Or, do they need to be rewritten
from scratch?  If there is a link to these instructions, please post as I cannot locate it any where.  Thank you.

Katherine thank you for helping with this.  Here is what I have tried:
On the Report Manager (2012) site, I created a new OLAP data source.  And when I test the connection, I get the pop up "Connection created successfully."
I then pointed my Report Builder (v1.0) report to this new Data Source (from Report Manager site, selected 'Manage' for the report, from Data Sources, selected Browse and drilled down to the new Data Source I created and selected Apply).
Now when I try to View the report, I receive the following error:
An error has occurred during report processing. (rsProcessingAborted) Query execution failed for dataset 'paramDataSet'. (rsErrorExecutingCommand) The SemanticQuery element at line 7, column 279 (namespace http://schemas.microsoft.com/sqlserver/2004/10/semanticmodeling)
    cannot appear under Envelope/Body/Execute/Command.
I then exited IE and reopened the Report Manager site.  I opened Report Builder 3.0,, selected Open and opened this same report.  Idrilled donw to Data Sources and  right clicked on dataSource1 (the only one listed) and selected Data
Source Properties.  I kept the same name, but selected the new shared datasource I created (New DataSource), and selected OK.
Next, I drilled down to Datasets.  There are two listed, dataSet and paramDataSet (yes, this report has parameters).  I right clicked on the dataSet and selected dataSet properties, and see that it points to dataSource1 (which is the dataSource
I just pointed to my New DataSource).  I cancelled and checked the Data Source for paramDataSet, and it also points to dataSource1.  Selected cancel and went back to the main dataSet.
So both datasets point to the new DataSource I created.
If I select Run, I get the following error:
I select OK and right click on dataSet and select Refresh Fields and get this error:
Can you (anyone) please explain what I am doing incorrectly?  Thank you.

  • SCCM 2012 R2 CU2 Can't Edit WMI Query Code in Report Builder

I first posted this in the SCCM but the issue is not solved so I thought I'd try here in the SQL Reporting forum. Original thread here: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/b0a6ca3d-7471-4b49-8447-7403a65c2ec0/sccm-2012-r2-cu2-cant-edit-wmi-query-code-in-sccm-reports?forum=configmanagergeneral
I'll repost info here to make this easier.....
I built a new SCCM 2012 R2 CU2 suite on Server 2012 R2. This also uses SQL 2012 SP1 CU6. This suite has 4 servers: site server, two for WSUS and secondary DPs, and SQL. This problem is true for the built in reports and my custom reports. Our SQL guy has
been helping me a lot but we've gotten nowhere. I can run a report. I can open one in edit mode after it prompts me for credentials. It loads Report Builder 3.0. But when I go to a dataset/query, enter credentials, and try to open it, I get a popup that
says "Unable to connect to data source. 'AutoGen_5C6358F2_yayak..." When I click on details it says "The target principal name is incorrect. A connection was succesfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the login
process.  (SSL Provider, error: 0 -The target principal name is incorrect.)" In SQL Reporting Services Config Manager the paths for Web Service URL is
http://ip.ip.ip.ip:80/ReportServer_SC01 and for Report Manager URL:
http://ip.ip.ip.ip:80/Reports_SC01. A domain account is used to login. This happens when you r-click a dataset and select query to edit the code of a dataset, ie, when query designer tries to open up. It happens
in both Admin Console and when using the Report Manager URL within SQL SSRS. All other functions of using edit mode of a report work fine.
    Ben JohnsonWY

When I do that, browse is dimmed out.
But, if I deselect "create a data set" and click "choose an existing dataset in this report..." there is no data connection at the end.
But if I don't use report builder and instead use IE to browse to my ConfigMgr_ABC, I do see the connection at the end: {123...}.
This problem is on a network that is not on the 'net, so it's hard to do screen shots, so I'll reproduce this problem step by step:
I pick a report to edit, it doesn't matter which one.
If I try it in Admin Console, I right-click, Edit the report, it asks me for a login, I login, then I get a popup that says "Cannot continue. The application is improperly formatted. Contact the vendor for assistance. I click the Details button and
get a long set of text but the key part is "Your web browser settings do not allow you to run signed applications." This msg didn't appear before, so something changed, so I will investigate. I think it used to give a SPN error.
If I use IE within report builder and navigate to whatever report, click open, everything works, except, when I click on Dataset0 (the key one I normally need to edit), click query, it prompts me for a login and no matter which one I use, i get a popup that
says "unable to connect to data source 'AutoGen_123...'". If I click details I get "the targe principal name is incorrect. A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the login process. (provider:
SSL Provider 0-The target principal name is incorrect.)

  • Problems with report builder 3.0 in SCCM 2012 R2 CU2

    Hi All
I have problems with editing  (Using Report builder) existing reports  or creating new ones in SCCM 2012 R2 CU2
We version of SQL we use is SQL 2008 R2 SP2
I already asked this question in the SCCM 2012 forum but the problem is not related to SCCM but has something to do with application report builder
I changed the registry key and edited the Microsoft.ConfigurationManagement.exe.config.xml as described in the following link

    Hi Miss Katherine,
    1. I went through the SQL steps in the link you posted
    2. I updated the Reg Key and Microsoft.ConfigurationManagement.exe.config file with 3.0 on both the
    server and the console machine.
    3. I copied the .DLL file from your OneDrive and replaced the existing one on the server.
    4. I uninstalled and re-installed the reporting role on the server and received the 1015 in the log.
    5. I restarted the server and the client machine
I do get a slightly different error now after using the new DLL

  • Comparing fields from multiple entities in the same report (report builder 1.0)

Created a model that contains 2 entities. I open that model in report builder 1.0.  When I drag a field from one of the entities into the design area, i can no longer see the other entity or use any of the fields from that other entity.
I need to use fields from both entities in the same report (join tables).  In management studio i would simply write a query and join tables but i cannot figure out how to do this in report builder.  Once i select a field from one entity
how do i select fields from more than one entity and drag them into the same report.

Would it be possible for you to send me instructions for this? I am not that familiar with SQL coding but I can definitely figure it out. I have been wanting to get information on reports from multiple entities for a very long time! The only way I can
currently do it is have our document management software people write the report for me for quite a large fee. I would much rather do this myself. Right now I can select a few fields from one entity (the main one), some from a second entity under that one,
but I cannot add any fields from a third entity! Quite annoying and hindering! Thank you :)

  • SQL Server 2012 - applying SP2 breaks SSRS Report Builder

    Hello,
It seems to me somebody applied SP2 for SQL Server 2012 on an instance that has installed SQL Server 2012 SP1 CTP 4. CTP4 is not
    the final version of SP1.
    http://sqlserverbuilds.blogspot.com/
My suggestion is to uninstall SP2 (using Control Panel), download and apply SP1 from the following link, and then apply SP2 again.

    Hope this helps.

    Sorin Sandu

    Hi Sorin,
SQL Server 2012 Reporting Services (SSRS) includes stand-alone and ClickOnce versions of Report Builder. The ClickOnce version can be used with Reporting Services installed in native or SharePoint integrated mode. For more information about how to start
    Report Builder, please see:

  • Refresh of a Report Builder Dataset does NOT show newly added field

I'm working with Report Builder 2.0 (we don't plan on getting SQL 2008 R2 - so NO 3.0 for us!) and have found that if I have an existing report using an existing stored procedure (it has 4 existing parameters) and I add a new field to the stored procedure
    it will not refresh the
data set.  I have gone to the DataSet properties and executed the query(SPROC) where it does show the new field (so I know the sproc will
execute), but when I click OK and hit Refresh Fields it stops responding.  I also tried the same steps without the Refresh Fields and still stops responding.  I also tried to add the field name and it errored out as invalid.
The only work around I've found is to
create a new dataset referencing the updated SPROC with a different name, deleting the old dataset and then re-naming the newer dataset with the old
one's name so all the field references are the same.  I do know that in the case of renaming
a field in a sproc that this would end BADLY because there is no way any of the old field's references would work.
But it seems odd I have to go through so much to refresh for new fields, so perhaps I'm missing a step in dealing with this situation.  Any recommendations would be appreciated.

    Hi CinBH,
I understand that the Report Builder 2.0 hangs while flush the dataset by executing the query. In that case, I think it is necessary to capture a user dump when the problem occurred. And then, you can send the dump to Microsoft CSS support. Support Professionals
from Microsoft will assist you to solve the problem.
I am providing the steps below for you to gather the hang dump or crash dump to further work on this issue,
    Hang dump,
    a. Open Report Builder as usual, and wait for a while.
    b. When you found that the Report Builder application hang, and was not responding, please open TaskManager by one of follws,
    - Pressing “Ctrl + Alt + Del” button and then click “Start Task Manager” item.
    - Or right-clicking your task bar, click “Start Task Manager”menu.
    c. Once the Task Manager opened, switch to Process tab, find the “Report Builder” process MSReportBuilder.exe.
    d. Right-click the item, click Create dump file.
    e. After that, it will prompt a window and let you know the location of the dump file.
You can copy the hang dump or crash dump file to your development machine configured with symbols files, and open it in Visual Studio 2008. Next, you can analyze the error / exception, and call stacks to see why the error happens.
    Thanks,
    Eileen

  • User inputted letters with dynamic fields in Report Builder

I'm proactively trying to get certain aspects off our hands in IT and more specifically, the way letters are generated through ColdFusion.  Right now we are using activeX controls (with some vbscript and asp pages) through IE to do Word mail merges for letter's for our students.  We would like the user to be able to change these letters by themselves through our web application and have them saved in our database so they can be stored as a future template.
Now I'm new to Report Builder and have a few examples to show my colleagues, but I'm having troubles being able to dynamically insert the student's name (for example) into the report.
So basically I have an empty template with a huge dynamic box for the text which reads #param.MessageBody# that comes from a textarea within the cfm page.  That works, but taking it one step further, I want to replace all instances of "%%StudentName%%" within that MessageBody with the actual student's name.
Since I cannot loop over the report and do my usual ReplaceNoCase(lMessageBody, "%%StudentName%%", Trim(ReportQueryLetters.StudentName), "ALL")>, how can I put this into a built-in function into the report?
I figured the function needs to be in <cffunction name="BeforeExport"> and while a simple display of the message works perfectly, I cannot get my replace line to work.  I am passing the query to Report Builder instead of having it built-in, is that my problem?!  I would prefer if it was external to save my stored procedures if I can.  Is there any way to call the query to get that line to work?!
The code inside the cffunction (in report Builder):
    <cfargument name="lTextArea">
    <cfset lTextArea = #form.frmTextArea#>
    <cfset lTextArea = ReplaceNoCase(lTextArea, "%%StudentName%%", Trim(ReportQueryLetters.StudentName), "ALL")>
    <cfreturn lTextArea>
    The error:
Element STUDENTNAME is undefined in REPORTQUERYLETTERS.

Sorry for the late reply, just got back from vacation.
I don't think you use ReportQueryLetters for the query.  it should be
    query.StudentName
Also, you can have an intermediate step on the page that receives the
MessageBody and change the MessageBody before passing it as a parameter to the
    report.

  • How to hide a report builder field if it is zero

I am using Coldfusion Report Builder. If the value of a feild is zero, how can I hide it or show a blank. Keep in mind this field is a DollarFormat() field.

When you click on the field in Report Builder, look near the bottom of the Properties window, in the "Print Control" section.
You will see an entry labelled "Print When Condition". Put an expression next to it that returns true or false.
For example, in your case, you would put something like the following:
    MyField neq 0
Where "MyField" is the name of your field. This expression will only allow the field to be printed when its value is not zero.
Since you're targeting the value of the field you don't have to worry about the formatting that you used next to "Expression" in the "Data" section of the Properties window.
