Reporting Progress and Scores in LMS

Hi all,
I am having some trouble incorporating my Captivate presentations into an LMS and getting it to report both progress and assessments correctly.  This could be a lengthy post, so I apologize in advance.
Let me start by including my current setups:
The desired outcome is as follows:
Progress
- I want to report progress up until the exam; for instance, if a user leaves midway through, on slide 15 of 30, Captivate should relaunch on slide 15 for that user
- Once I get to the exam, users should not be able to backtrack to previous slides.
- If the user starts the exam, but doesn't finish, it should report to the LMS whatever score was earned, counting unanswered questions as 0's.
- Once an exam is failed, and this is the tricky part, I want the course to completely restart.  Right now, it's loading mid-exam, and if I try to go back, it chain-pauses the presentation; possibly a conflict since I have it set to not allow users to go back once the exam is started.  Essentially, once a score is reported, I want to wipe the cookie saving the progress clean.
Is there a way I can achieve all of this through Captivate?
Any help would be MUCH appreciated.  Right now, the best compromise I can come up with to check "Never Send Resume Data" and not save a users progress - but when I turn this off, it also isn't communicating the exam scores to the LMS either.
Thanks in advance!

I can't promise that you can have everything you want, but perhaps some of your wishes are certainly doable in Captivate.
I note from your settings that you have the course Report Status set to track Complete/Incomplete rather than Pass/Fail, yet you talk about wanting the user to complete "exam" quiz questions and you also have Report Data set to Quiz Results Only.  There's something inherently contradictory about these settings. Complete/Incomplete is mostly for recording slide views. If recording quiz results is most important, I think you should really be using Pass/Fail.  It's an either/or decision. Most LMSs are far more likely to be reliable on the Pass/Fail setting and some just don't do Complete/Incomplete at all anyway.
I would also recommend you change your Report to LMS setting to Percent rather than Score.  In my experience, Percent is more LMS "friendly".
For starters, there are two mechanisms available for allowing the user to resume a course module at the same point they left off:
One option is to tick the option in TOC settings for Self-paced Learning.  This writes data to a Shared Object (Flash Cookie) on the user's PC that records the slide they finished on.  Captivate doesn't provide a means to erase this cookie out of the box.  You'd have to get some programming done in AS3 to achieve that extra functionality.
Option 2 is to untick the box in LMS Customisation Settings for Never Send Resume Data.  This then will mean the Captivate lesson DOES send resume data to the LMS.  With this option you are depending on the LMS to keep track of where your user got up to.  But be warned.  This setting is more reliable when it comes to tracking which scored object (e.g, a quiz question slide) the user got up to.  I'm not sure how reliable it is when it comes to tracking slide views because each LMS is slightly different as to it's abilities to track data. In my experience, using Self-Paced Learning is better for straight out slide view tracking, but it's also a pain when users that completed the course come back later to browse the content again because they get shunted straight to the last slide.  Quite annoying.  So I don't use it.
Now for some of your other wishes:
To prevent users backtracking to previous slides once they've reached the exam, simply disable Backward movement under Quiz Settings.  Remember that as far as Captivate is concerned, the quiz begins at the very first scored object, which might be a button or click box, not necessarily the first quiz question.
If a user only partially completes an exam, the LMS should still receive a score for each completed quiz question slide as long as you have Reporting Level set to Interactions and Score.  But be aware that this means the LMS will be getting pinged by the course after each and every user interaction, which can place quite a load on the LMS if there are lots of simultaneous users.
By default in Captivate, if a user gets a question wrong they get no score for that question.  So that one is easy.
Your final wish is to force the entire quiz to restart if the user flunks it.  I may be misunderstanding your drift but why not just allow the user multiple attempts at the quiz?  You can set this under Quiz > Settings > Pass/Fail.  Tick the box for Show Retake Quiz Button and place this button right over the top of the Review Quiz button on the Quiz Results slide.  The user will only see the Retake Quiz button if they fail the quiz and when they click it, their previous quiz answers are erased, effectively forcing them to redo the entire quiz.  Wouldn't that get you what you want?
One more thing.  Beware of the options in the drop down menu under Quiz > Settings > Required. I generally set this to Optional, as some of the other settings can cause unpredictable results with LMSs.
Hopefully this info will get you closer to your goals.

    Hi bubbles213,
The best way to move information from one iOS device to another is to back up the device using iCloud or iTunes (or both), and then restoring the new device from it.  This article will walk you through the steps:

  • Report Formatt takes long time -- Report Progress and background engine

We invoke reports from Forms using run_report_object.
A particular report takes a long time. As soon as we invoke the report, the "Reports Progress" window shows up. Right after that The "Reports background Engine" display as Formatting Page1, 2, 3 etc. It takes a long time to get this done for a three page report.
We are using Reports 6i. Any thoughts? Is this a query performance or Report format issue?
    Thanks

Formatting page 1 often means that the query is still executing, not that the page is formatting page 1.
If the report is "Formating page 2" for a long while on a 3 page report (assuming page 2 is not another query in a different report section) it would seem that the query is passing bits of data back to the report a bit at a time.
In this case try adding the ALL_ROWS hint which forces Oracle to retrieve all rows (you optimizer may be set to first_rows)

  • SCORM 1.2 and Saba - Reporting a 0 Score for Track Slide views

    Good morning,
We have just transitioned over to our new LMS, Saba.  To say the transition has been rocky would be an understatement.   So, here is what I am dealing with:
I have a very basic reader course where I want to grant someone credit once they have viewed all slides.  I am using SCORM 1.2 and setting either "User Access Only" or "Slide Views Only."  If I use slide views, I set it to 1, it sends a 0 score to the LMS, even if the user views all slides.  I have been able to create a fix by assigning a point value to a click box or button at the screen where I want the user to get credit.  However, this does not seem to be what was intended.
Below are screen shots of my publishing commands, Saba screens, and communication report between Saba and CP.

I would suggest you try using Percent instead of Score, and set the Slide View completion percentage to 100 instead of 1.
Change Reporting Level to Score instead of Interactions and Score.
You haven't shown the screen for Quiz > Pass or Fail settings, but you need to set the passing percentage there to 100% as well if you intend that the learner must view every single slide.
Bear in mind that when using slide views, if you have any navigation buttons on the slides that are set to jump to the next slide when clicked, then the learner does not get a completion mark for those slides.  In Captivate you have to watch a slide all the way to the last frame in order to get it marked as completed.  If for some reason you need to get slides marked as completed despite not being viewed (e.g. when using branching) then you can use our TickTOC widget to gain credit for those slides that are missed or not watched to the end.
    http://www.infosemantics.com.au/ticktoc
If you suspect that not all slides will be viewed, you can adjust the Pass/Fail percentage to something less than 100% to allow for the missed ones.
Try these changes and see if it works.
Once you DO find the settings that allow Captivate to work with SABA I would be very interested to know what they were.  I've got a page on my website where I want to show the Captivate config settings for SABA: http://www.infosemantics.com.au/lms_guide/saba  I don't have access to this LMS myself, but perhaps you or other SABA users on this forum can contribute information to make it easier for others to work with it.

  • Reporting score to LMS Manually

    Hello Everyone
I am working on a project where I am creating slides with variables to track
the score, attempts, correct answers, percentage score, etc instead of inbuild quiz functionality.
I didn't use quiz functionality provided by captivate as different questions are of different type with
    different scores attached to them.
All is working fine but now I want to report final scores to LMS and want to know how can that
be done on the final slide. How can I post all the variable values like scores achieved, total score,
percentage score, competency status, etc to LMS.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    JagVWS

By default Captivate does not provide any way to report user variable values as SCORM scores.  Only interactive objects or quiz question slides can be assigned to report a score or result to the quiz.  Since user variables are not interactive, you cannot assign them to report to the quiz.
There is a widget that allows you to set up user variables as slave objects and basically treat them as interactive, but it's the widget that actually reports the score to the quiz ON BEHALF of the variable.
You can find out more about it here:
    http://www.infosemantics.com.au/adobe-captivate-widgets/interactive-master
    http://www.infosemantics.com.au/interactivemaster/help
    Free trial version widgets here:

Please note that this widget is NOT HTML5 compliant.  Only HTM/SWF output is supported.

  • Crystal Reports 2008 and SABA LMS

    Hi.
I am new in this forum and I hope you can help me.
The company I work for would buy Crystal Reports to manage reports extracted from SABA LMS.
I would like to know if the latest version of Crystal Reports is compatible with SABA LMS version 5.3, considering that this version has not been upgraded since the last 5 years...!
    Thank you very much!!

    Web Proxy Server
    Symptom:
If your company has a proxy server that all users in your organization must connect through to access the Internet, you will not be able to connect to Salesforce.com unless you follow the steps below. Typically, Crystal Reports will show a Java error when attempting to connect to Salesforce.com through a proxy server.
    Resolution:
Edit the CRConfig.xml (typically installed at C:\Program Files\Business Objects\Common\4.\java). You will need to change tags in the section enclosed within <SForce> ... </SForce>.
For example, if your proxy server is called http://myproxy.server.net and uses port 10000, this section should read:
    <SForce>
         <CacheRowSetSize>100</CacheRowSetSize>
         <QueryBatchSize>2000</QueryBatchSize>
         <SocketTimeout>600000</SocketTimeout>
         <UseProxy>TRUE</UseProxy>
         <ProxyAddress>http://myproxy.server.net</ProxyAddress>
         <ProxyPort>10000</ProxyPort>
         <BatchLookupCacheJoinSize>200</BatchLookupCacheJoinSize>
    </SForce>
If you also need to provide login credentials to your proxy server, this section would read:
    <SForce>
         <CacheRowSetSize>100</CacheRowSetSize>
         <QueryBatchSize>2000</QueryBatchSize>
         <SocketTimeout>600000</SocketTimeout>
         <UseProxy>TRUE</UseProxy>
         <ProxyAddress>http://myproxy.server.net</ProxyAddress>
         <ProxyPort>1111</ProxyPort>
         <ProxyUsername>YOUR_USERNAME</ProxyUsername>
         <ProxyPassword>YOUR_PASSWORD</ProxyPassword>
         <BatchLookupCacheJoinSize>200</BatchLookupCacheJoinSize>
    </SForce>
Note: Proxy servers often require a domain name as well. If this is the case, for the ProxyUsername above, use DOMAIN\YOUR_USERNAME.

  • Reporting progress without information, why?

    Hi,
I catch a project from another people and have many errors, but now appears it is working.
I´m using a sandbox to test, when finishing I will put in a LMS unknow,
the reporting of progress isn't working properly, simply don´t reporting.
Who originally made this project make a non-linear sequence to fix a problem with Closed Caption,
    could be this the problem?
I tryed many configuration to publish, but every time is the same result,
the LMS didn't give the progress, but the score of quiz is working.
Sincerly I don´t understand this software.
    The computer:
    Windows 7 Professional 64bits
Captivate 6 32bits (originally make the project)
Captivate 8 64bits (i´m using because is multilanguage and my english isn´t good).

    Hi RodWard,
Here some screenshots of Quiz Reporting.
And here a screenshot of LMS,
Where is "Conclusão e nota" is like "Progress and Points".
    Thanks.

  • Captivate passing incorrect score to LMS

We've noted this problem in both CP4 and CP5. Users report getting passing scores on quiz result screen, but results passed to LMS differ. Seems to happen most for users on Macs, but also happens for PC users in Firefox. No problems noted in IE.
We are using SCORM 1.2, and LMS is LearnShare. According to its logs, the raw scores sent from Captivate in SCORM do not always match the score reported on the Captivate quiz result screen. When the problem occurs, the reported score in SCORM is always lower than what was shown.
We built a small sample module in CP5 with 5 questions and can generate the issue through Firefox fairly regularly. Are there any known workarounds for this issue?

    Vishal,
After a couple of weeks using this, and having updated our modules, we are not having any more problems. Thanks!

  • Reporting on buttons in the LMS, when there are multiple buttons on the page

I have a project, it is 2 slides in multiple languages adding up to 38 slides. The first slide appears in English . The user can click the language of their choice or  click I agree (reported action to the LMS for completion). If they click I agree, no problem.  They score 10 points and the requirement for completion is to score 5.
If the user clicks their language, they have the option to click I agree (reported action to the LMS) or they can go Back to English (Jump to first slide).  When I add the  reporting on the I Agree in the language slides.  The Back to English button will only advance to next slide even though it isn't set up that way.  The functionality works fine if I'm not trying to set up reporting.  Any suggestions?

  • Difficulty marking progress as 'completed' in LMS

I am having some challenges with my Captivate 4 created tutorials being marked as 'completed' in our LMS.  Generally, they will be marked as 'completed' the second time that they are opened.
Our last slide is set to not fade out (Edit - Preferences - Start / End) so it remains on the screen.  This slide has instructions to the learner to close the window or select a click box that jumps to Slide 1, if they wish to view it again.  When the lesson is played and stops on this slide, you can tell by looking at the playbar that there is a tiny section left to view.  If you click on the remaining section and drag it to the end, the tooltip will appear indicating that the project has "53/52" slides.  This project only has 52 slides, so how can the playbar indicate that there are 53?  Where is the phantom last slide coming from?  I have copied the slides into a new project and that did not solve the issue.
I believe that this is what is causing our tutorials to not be marked properly in the LMS.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

What LMS are you using? I use one called GeoLearning and I had to download a custom template to make it work completely. Here are the instructions that I used to get it to work with mine; so you're welcome to give it a shot...
In preferences, in the Quiz tab:
Make sure that Enable reporting for this project is checked.
    Learning Management System
Select Standard and rom the drop down select SCORM (if you had a customized template for your LMS select that from the template drop down)
Click on Manifest and enter your course name in the title sections. If you have a quiz, click on the Mastery score checkbox and enter your quiz passing percentage. Click OK
    Report Status
Any of the tree options available here will work equally well. If you are having problems though, select Complete/Incomplete.
    Report to LMS as
Both Percent and Score will work. The LMS will record the Percent score regardless of which option is chosen. If you are experiencing problems, select Percent.
    Choose Report Data
I used Slide view only and made my Slide view completion 100%
    Reporting Level
I used Interactions and Score (although I'm not sure how important this is)
Click on the LMS Customization Settings button and ensure that Never Send Resumed Data is UN-checked. That allows users to close the project and reopen it to the same spot without messing with your Complete/Incomplete status
I hope this works for you!

  • Reporting the Same Score Regardless of Right/Wrong

    Hi everyone,
This is a very odd request...my client, for some reason, wants to report the same score for the quiz regardless of whether it's right or wrong.
So, if the learner gets the correct answer, they get 1 point. If they get it wrong (even after giving them 2 attempts), they still want it to report 1 point.
It sounds like they don't want to change it to 0. I've already offered that as a solution.
They want the pass/fail settings to report 0%.
This request doesn't make any sense to me. It completely goes against the point of reporting a score.
Any ideas on how I should address this with them and give the same score regardless of right/wrong answers?
    Thanks,
    Kristen

    Hi everyone,
Rod, the client wants to give a percentage. They don't care about the score. And as much as I question their request, I was asked to just research potential solutions and not question it. Frustrating, I know.
Lieve was able to give me two solutions offline that they will consider. Thank you, Lieve!
I can't give them unlimited attempts. The client has made it VERY clear that they only want to allow 2 attempts. And they also don't want to rely solely on slide views...they would like for it to report the same score for every learner that basically shows they attempted to answer the question (right or wrong).
    Thanks everyone!
