Request: Capture One Style Teathering Module

In many commerical professional studios people like to use Capture One Pro in a teathered environment because it works with most cameras, its got an interface that is productive as images stream in (ie- updating white balance, checking focus, checking color number exposure thresholds, overlaying comps) and it's much faster at loading previews than capturing into a hot folder situation like Lightroom has it now.  All in all, Capture One is better for live capture teathered environments.
There is a giant problem with capture one, that is that the raw image data created through adjustments in capture one is propietary to capture one and can't be imported into Lightroom for archiving without losing that valuable data.  Therefore, i'm either requesting that you either create a Capture Module that is as quick, effiecent and has all the productive tools that capture one has so that we can ditch the glitchy program or create a way to import raw files from capture one to lightroom and maintain the same image appearance.

    I agree, C1 pro 5 has made leaps and bounds in the last few years from 3.7.  I like it as a capture program but not as a method for organizing and archiving my images.  I wish the two could communicate better in a fashion that doesn't require a work around.  It's a real workflow issue.

    First I would like to say hallo, as it is my first post here.
    Hi, I've been using LR for a few years now. Lately I downloaded trail of Capture One, and I found it very well made. Now I am bit confused with my preferences, should I stick with LR or move to Capture One? Big adavantage for me is that in C1 there is no need to import photos to catalog (there is no catalog at all). Can you describe your experience working with both aplications over time please?

    1. You're always editing a preview in any editor.
    2. Lr makes the best previews, and
    3. Lets one faithfully edit them because they're camera specific
    4. stores those previews for future reference, so
    5. any RAW editor which tells you it isn't making a catalog (processing images into something intelligible) or denies you repeat access to the catalog it's made, is
    6. Not good at all by Lr standards, so
    7. Your only choice is Lr if you edit what starts out as a RAW file.
    and 8. if you edit JPEG, you'll be amazed at the conversion to editing RAW, so
    9. if you're camera, by definition, always makes a RAW file, use that so you'll be amazed, and find that,
    10. the upshot is, chuck Camera nOne if it does not let you reference the catalog or doesn't edit RAW (which is what I suspect the issue to be).
    Never used Camera One, but I cannot imagine not having a catalog.
    The Lr catalog is about creating accurate thumbnails (in Catalog view) and 100%  (1:1) previews for non-distructively editing RAW files made by DSLR (or, amazingly, now, some high-end point 'n' shoots, I've heard tell).
    See, if your shooting with RAW and then editing the result, you are editing a "preview" because RAW data must be interpolated into something intelligible to, well, in the end, the Human Eye (your monitor, the edit features of the program, etc). RAW, in it's raw format is (to be nontechnical and with an intended pun) just a bunch of black or white dots in a matrix. The tone and the hue are a matter of interpretation by your camera and by any editor you're using if you're processing the RAW files (or JPEGs, in fact). http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/cameras-photography/digital/question362.htm
    Two points about the link: It references only what a DSLR (single lens reflex) does when it talks about a prism directing to the viewfinder and then fractionally, allowing light to hit the "negative" or imaging sensor. Alas, very notably missing is that the CMOS sensor  (or CCD on some, still) has an array of Red, Blue and Green "filters" in front of it's pixels which "sorts" the photons which arrive at each simiconductor so that the blue photons hit the "blue-sensing" simiconductors. Your camera then knows that it read a "blue" photon. Also, the intensity is somewhat a matter of local averages because once the "electron" from the semiconductor carrys the information, it cannot give intensity data specific to the photon that started the process.

    In fact, what you're seeing on the viewer on the back of your camera is a preview (in many a JPEG preview) of the shots which are always RAW files, by definition. But it's controlled by your camera, see? Well, Lr applies a standard specific to your camera to render those previews (which is always what your editing in any RAW editor). The catalog is a set of lesser previews which I find acceptable.
    My point is that you are always seeing a preview of a RAW file whatever editor you use. Some are less faithful than the standard preview generator, Adobe's Camera Raw.
    Aside:
    In actuality, I usually make all of my catalog previews 1:1 (each pixel represented faithfully in Catalog module) so I can see what I will have in the Develop mode before I switch over (one cannot have a grid display Develop, so I cheat and make the Library show me a 1:1 on every image). The Develop module is not about viewing and arranging, keywording, rating, and generally managing your images, it's about, well, Developing them). Cataloging one's previews 1:1 uses a whole lot of memory, though. The standard's will suffice. What I'm saying is that Develop always renders a 1:1 preview so you can faithfully edit your RAW 'negatives.'
    That's a RAW editor, in a nutshell.
    What makes RAW great to work with is that it shows all data your camera gathered about each pixel. JPEG format compresses this information in "lossy" ways that I never knew when I was shooting with a point 'n' shoot to 'get used to digital' before I went to a DSLR, and shudder to think about now.
    If you're editing JPEGs (which may be what Capture none is for), then disregard the foregoing.
    If your editing RAW, erase Capture none from your computer, because, in Lr you've found a program which can faithfully represent images from all makes and models very well (all = vast majority) and creates an .lrcat file which references data (the previews) in the Previews.lrdata folder which is a compendium of the initial imports and of all of the edits you've made. These files are what you work with and may be differently named, of a different programatic process, and of vastly different 'quality' per application.
    I'd say that an application that doesn't let you access them in Library style view, or doesn't save them at all, is chinzy.
    So, if RAW is your game (if not try, set your camera to RAW and not JPEG or both if you want both to compare and can tolerate a massive reduction in the storage of your in-camera medium), chuck Camera nOne, it is a ridiculous alternative.
    If JPEG is your game and I just blew your mind, set your camera to RAW (or both, if need be, to to compare). You'll be amazed at having the ability actually to edit the images from your camera (which are always born as RAW data at the very beginning).

  • HiRISE JP2 Images fail to open in CS6 (64bit) - Could not complete your request because the file-format module cannot parse the file.

    Unable to open any of the HiRISE images within PS CS6.  Receive the following error:  "Could not complete your request because the file-format module cannot parse the file."
    The files are NOT corrupt as I can open them in IrfanView and ACDSee, just not Photoshop CS6.

    I downloaded a small HiRise JP2 and used Preview to export as Tiff.  It opens up just fine.
    Apparently the JP2 takes up an awful lot of memory uncompressing, and Photoshop gives up.

    I also got the same error on the file in Message one, so saving it as a tiff would work.

  • Painting one root Application Module to rule them all

    The description below uses the same MyApplicationModuleListener approach as I describe in the forum thread "painting a picture of Application Module pooling".
    Another example review of Application Module pools behaviour is the blog post by Chris Muir, "JDev 11g, Task Flows & ADF BC – one root Application Module to rule them all?".
    That post also says "... we'll have trouble discerning what the ADF BC layer is actually doing underneath the task flow transaction options. ...", where the approach below might help alleviate some of that discerning trouble.
    And about "... By deduction as there are no other log entries, this second instance of Root1AppModule must be nested under the root Root1AppModule? ..." more information will be logged, so less deduction is required.
    The blog post describes an application similar to this one (which is using the HR.EMPLOYEES table) created using JDeveloper 11.1.1.6.0

  • NEF vs. DNG : Different renderings in Capture One 4

    I've just observed that -- when I convert a D200 NEF > DNG, and then import both to Capture One 4, the renderings are slightly different ... both of them with default settings.
    I select ICC profiles for NEF > D200 Generic , DNG > Neutral.
    DNG is darker than NEF.... not uniformly daker, but just some parts... like different curves applied.
    Same Kelvin values (WB) applied to both files give different results -- DNG needs lower Kelvins degrees to look like the NEF.
    NEF Reds are orang-ish in DNG. DNG yellows are orang-ish in NEF.
    Something I'm not sure how to describe, but it looks like differences in color brilliance between the two files.
    If I select ICC profile for DNG > D200 Generic , then the same applies, only that now DNG looks more saturated than NEF.
    For reference, Lightroom renders both files exactly identical.
    So ... is this something related only to how C1 renders both files (C1 not knowing how to manipulate a DNG), or is it related to the DNG conversion itself (adobe playing god with the raw data) ?

    Honestly, I can infer from your posts by SIMPLE READING only that you are confused and speculating a lot.
    I try to put the results in cleartext:
    1. C1 creates result A from the native raw file.
    2. C1 creates result B from the DNG file converted from the raw. B is different from A.
    3. C1 created result C from the modified DNG file. C is different from A AND from B.
    If the above is right, then we can say, that
    a. C1 CAN work with the pure DNG data, which includes the color conversion Adobe's way. The modified DNG differs from the original DNG in that the camera name (maker and model) has been changed, AND the MakerNote tag has been made unaccessible, and this file has been accepted by C1.
    This is in contrast to some other raw processors, which accept a DNG file only if they know the camera's characteristics; see the thread "Is DNG a universal raw format?" down below.
    b. C1 DOES take some information from MakerNote if available, otherwise these two version would yield the same result.
    The originating question was, why the "native" and DNG result are different. Based on the above test, I can not answer it with certainty, it is not clear, what C1 uses from MakerNote.
    Now, to the question of "DNG - standard or not".
    The DNG specification tries to put many aspects of a raw image in a uniform shape. However, there are two distinct areas posing problems:
    1. Camera specific options. The Exif specification provides for a way of recording sharpness, contrast, saturation and white balance, but the specification has been created very short-sightedly and became useless. Other options, like Picture Style has not been envisioned at all. Such options are coming in series, the DNG specification does not cover them.
    These options are available in the native raw file as well as in DNG, but programs have to make extra gymnastics to extract them from DNG; NOT DNG is to blame in this point.
    Some raw processor go the extra way, others don't. ACR does not make anything, which can not be seen in DNG format as well, i.e. it does not support these options.
    2. The other problem area is the color transformation. There is *no* generally accepted way to describe the sensors' behaviour. Most raw processors adopted camera and model specific solutions; Adobe defined a way in DNG, which is an *approximation*. Others don't share the enthusiasm, with some justification. It is not by chance, that camera makers' own converters give the best colors of their cameras.
    So, a raw processor can process a DNG file using the hard-coded knowledge of the sensor - like Aperture does - or going ACR's way of color transformation.
    C1 may take some setting(s) from the native raw file, while not doing so with a DNG, even if the data is available (but differently). This may be the reason for the difference between the results of the NEF and DNG conversion.
    Note, that it is not necessary to access the MakerNote for identifying the camera.

  • Capture One vs Adobe Camera Raw processing - what is better?

    Hi,
    I regularly shoot on a P45 back and Hassleblad camera. I shoot using Capture One software. It is much more convenient for me to process the files in Photoshop's Raw convertor than Capture One but I'm always a little worried that maybe it lacks the quality? I've not noticed any quality dip but most high end digital camera outlets process on Capture One.
    Are their any significant differences if I process in Photoshop rather than Capture One? Is the quality the same?
    One further detail: my images are heavily worked in Photoshop so very small colour variations are probably going to be negligible for my way of working.

    While I certainly agree that skill of the operator is the largest factor, I think it is a fair question because the results very dramatically.
    Attached are screen shots from a very weak shot (go ahead and blast it) that was over exposed.  I dropped the exposure by one stop in Aperture, ACR 5.3 and Capture One Pro 4.8 and did some high light recovery in each.  You can see how varied the responses are with the image and histiogram.  These are all at 100% and shot with a Nikon D3.  If anyone can offer a clearer understanding of why the results are so varied that would be very helpful.

  • Is it possible to have Multiple Spool requests in one batch job overview?

    While running one of my z program in back ground, there are two spools generated (one by write statement and one by OPEN_FORM statement and both the spools are available in SP01 Transaction), but when i see the job overview in transaction SM37, I only see one spool request (that of the last spool request). Can any body in the group please tell me is it possible to see multiple spool requests in the job overview of one Abap program and if yes, how?

    Anyway, does any one in the group think that display of multiple spools per one step job is dependent on client / SAP Server setting? Because as evident from the chain of mails in the link provided by Jayanthi, some people say that they see multiple spool requests for one program in batch mode job overview (SM37)? If yes, can some body tell me the required configuration?

    Neither iPhoto, Lightroom nor Capture One are editors. They are all database driven Photo Managers with non-destructive processing. There is no rational workflow that would use more than one of these apps, any more than it would make sense to write a novel in three different word processors at the same time.
    Pick the one that suits your needs - if you're coming from Aperture then forget iPhoto, it's much less capable and also being end-of-lifed. Pick between Lightroom and Capture One. Then google the options for migration from Aperture to the one you choose.

  • Highlight banding problems NOT encountered in Capture One

    I have noticed one issue with Lightroom since I started using it that may become a deal-breaker if I am not able to find a solution (or at least an explanation). The Issue is this:
    In areas of intense, sharp highlights in my images (usually when a light source is in the frame) LR interprets these highlight areas in the Raw image much less smoothly than Capture One does. I have an example of each here (an exported JPEG that basically matches what I saw when looking at the Raw files):

    Notice the much better handling of the blue tonal gradations in the highlights in the upper left corner of the example from Capture One.
    Is there anyone with enough knowledge of both LR and C1 to explain why the difference is so striking in the upper left corner? I've tried everything I can think of in LR (Recovery, adjusting the HSL sliders for blue and aqua, changing the contrast, exposure, etc...) and nothing works to solve the problem. Is this perhaps a color space issue? The image was shot in the sRGB color space, but the images were output in the Adobe 1998 space (this shouldn't matter and I assume the highlight problems would appear in an sRGB output as well). Or maybe it is just the way LR interprets Canon's Raw data? I find this all very confusing. Help!
    Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can get the image to look like the C1 version in LR? Or is this impossible?
    The image was shot with a Canon 5D at ISO 800 without flash. I made only slight changes to the image in both LR and C1 to make the man's face less saturated. Other than that, this is the default handling of the Raw file from each program.
    I'm running LR and C1 on a G5 iMac with 2GB of RAM, an ATI Radeon 9600 graphic's card, and a calibrated monitor.

    Okay, so the deal is, this area is completely blown out, even in the RAW data. You prefer the way CO handles this situation on this particular image, and I tend to agree. However, in most cases, I prefer how LR handles this by adding contrast to try to recover detail from blown areas. In this case, adding that contrast is causing a problem.
    I can see no way to alter this particular image using LR/ACR to get what you want (a low-contrast diffuse transition from blown to unblown). If you have more of these, or if others have similar examples, that would be helpful.

    I can import the Raw file successfully but cannot see any edits that were applied in Capture One. Im assuming no but just checking.

    Your assumption is correct, Capture One, Lightroom and other third party raw processors have their own proprietary processes and profiles for rendering the raw data.
    They do not make permanent changes to the raw data and store the changes to an .xmp file or to a catalog file like Lightroom.

    If you are working with a file you modified in Lightroom, you should go to the Lightroom Photo menu and choose Edit in... and the version of Photoshop you want to open it in.
    There a dialog will ask if you want to transfer the LR settings you made to your photo when you open in Photoshop.

    Is it possible to define more than one style for a single link state?
    For example, I would like a link in the footer of my master page to be smaller than the links that appear in the body of my topics. I want to retain behavior, and simply change the point size.
    I can't simply hand format in Design mode, because my link is within a script. Or, am I missing something easy here?

    I'm pleased to say I figured out how to change the formatting of a hyperlink embedded within a script.
    Within the script, I used a var string to reproduce the text in my link. Then I used another var to change the string size.
    So, here's the part of my script that produces what I'm after:
    var mailDisplay = 'Was this information helpful? ';
    var str = 'Was this information helpful?';
    var mailDisplay = str.fontsize("1");
    Upon generation of the CHM, the script trumps the CSS. It's a beautiful thing.

    Fn mod1 and Fn mod2 in fn group A
    and i transported this to another server.
    now i changed fn mod1 and transported.
    so the request number of fn mod 1 get changed.
    So my req is to not based on fn group.
    And it depends on fn modules.
    Can u plz gv me some idea to get the request number (tables or fn mods) of fn module??
