I have a simple UI class that has a single text field. This class has a method on it:
public String provideInput()
The UI is only supposed to permit the user to provide input when provideInput() is called by the backend logic. The string that provideInput() returns should be the text provided by the user; this text is then parsed and processed by the backend logic.
What is the most elegant way of causing the method provideInput() to block until input is provided? My current solution is to:
Disable the text field until provideInput() is invoked;
Set a flag indicating that input has not yet been provided;
When provideInput() is invoked, enable the text field;
Inside provideInput(), while input has not been provided, do Thread.sleep(x)
When the text field's ActionListener receives the actionPerformed event, flag that input has been provided;
Inside provideInput(), when the while loop terminates, return the text in the text field.

Modal dialogs are dialogs that block the rest of your UI until dismissed. You should use one of them. A JOptionPane for example.

Requesting user input from UNIX command window

New to this forum, and relatively new to Java......question for you......
Currently, I am able to request a .txt file from a user in my unix command window by having them type in the following command:
java Game (nameOfTextFile).txt
with the following code:

where 'reader' holds the .txt file.
What I would like to do is as soon as the user types in the command:
java Game
it gives them the line:
"Please type the file to be input"
and at this point they type in:
(nameOfTextFile).txt
and then I can start working with the text file.
Any ideas?

You could create a shell program. When the user enters the name of the shell program at the command prompt, it gives them the prompt to enter the file to be input. And then from within the shell program you call the java program with the name of the file.

Urgent help request: User input in empty table

I am trying to find some idea how does one code so that user can input rows or delete rows in am empty JTable. I would appreciate if any article, example or suggestion on this is extended. Thanks in advance.

Display dialog, await user input how to get no timeout?

I have a script i run on login, it brings up a dialog that requests user input, how can I stop it timing out if nothing happens?

Sorry long delay to get back to my question that I asked,
Still having issues, original I used the timeout action, and that keeps the script working.... However it still times out and then when I use the
giving up after 150
I've not tested it to see if it prevents an early timeout, but clicking a the dialog and my script, just stops working there and does nothing else.

Derive values based upon user input

Hello,
I recieved a request for a report.
When a user runs the report they are to be prompted for a fiscal year/period.
Based on the fiscal year/period that the user provides I have the following columns (in bold below are 2 examples that may make the description more clear).
1. Revenue for the Fiscal year Prior to the fiscal year of the user input value
2. Revenue for the Fiscal year/Period prior to the input Fiscal year/period
3. Revenue for the Year to date accumulation up to the prior fiscal year/period that the user input
4. Revenue for the Year to date accumulation up to the prior fiscal year (fiscal year rolls back first) and prior period (for period 01, it then rolls back the fiscal year 1 more year) that the user input
Example 1: If the user ran the query and they provided the value 05/2007, then the values that need to be obtained would be:
1. Revenue for 2006
2. Revenue for 04/2007
3. Revenue for 01/2007 to 04/2007
4. Revenue for 01/2006 to 04/2006
Example 2: If the user ran the query and they provided the value 01/2008, then the values that need to be obtained would be:
1. Revenue for 2007
2. Revenue for 12/2007
3. Revenue for 01/2007 to 12/2007
4. Revenue for 01/2006 to 12/2006
Please help me with determining how to obtain the user input value, and then how to derive the time periods for the columns based upon that value.

Some offerings are missing user input, some are not mapping to activites

Seemingly out of the blue my system has stopped mapping request offering answers to (manual) activities (mapping to the SR itself works), neither OotB properties or custom properties. This only happens when submitting them from the portal (ALL
offerings)
Also, some requests are even missing user input (and obviously no mapping is possible).
This issue seem to affect all users. Even admins
I have tried restarting the web content server and also the website on the sharepoint server. I have also tried creating a brand new template and offering in a brand new MP.
I have been able to track down a ca. point in time this issue arose, but not found anything in logs anywhere (except SMPortalTrace). Checked web content server event log and website log, SQL log, event log on both management servers.
I have checked the SMPortalTrace.log and for every request submitted I get an error (not visible in the portal) - some is in danish, so I have translated at the best of my ability:

I found that if the user input is missing even from the SR then the error does not present itself in the SMPortalTrace.log, only if the user input goes through (but is not mapped to activities).

The issue seems to be related to a syntactically valid type projection in the Service Request form (customized) - I added a component to the existing projection. As the template that a request offering is based on has a reference to this projection I guess
the code that creates the Service Request submitted from the portal somehow ignores the "unwanted" type projection component, and instead of not submitting the request it continues but is unable to map into child activities. I will try and reproduce
this in more detail.
Solution: Revert to original type projection in the SR form and everything went back to normal.

Email notification User Input property

I have query results from service request as part of user input into Service Request and processing them in Orchestrator.
As a part of email notification, I would like to display the same query results as part of body of email notification.
Query results are displayed as part of User Input in Service Request
In email notification I am able to display all fields of service requests except User Input maybe because its inturn a XML value.
Any suggestion to come across this ?

I am assuming that you are sending the email notification as HTML, in that case the "User Input" will be filtered as it starts with < and ends with > (HTML notification will filter the context between <...>)
You have to use a PS script in Orchestrator to get the query results only from the "User Input" without all the junk info between <...> then return that using Published Data tab so you will be able to use it in the runbook activities such
as the email activity.
Do you have a working example of how to do what you describe? I am trying to accomplish the same thing and having alot of difficulty coming up with a proper solution. Any help is appreciated!

Add User Input in Email Notification Template

Hi all, I'm new to SM and in need of anyone's assistance. I've created a service request and in the template under User Input, I have it requesting the "New Users Name" and the "Start or Termination Date". I'd like to add these 2
inputs into my Email Notification Template. How can this be done? I've been able to insert the Title, Requestor, Alternative Number, and Description in the Template Design but can't seem to find where I can add these Inputs. Any help would be

Selecting user input from Select option into smart form

How to call URL to collect user input ?

Hi all,
I am writing a Swing applications and at some points, I need to call a URL (external web page) to collect user input. It invokes passing certain parameters to web page so that the web page can be displayed in some certain form. After the user input all data in web page, press "submit", my Swing application needs to get the input back. I suppose that calling URL is trivial but how can I get the input back ? Any input will be greatly appreicated.
Note: the web page will be displayed in one JFrame but it may not related to this problem.

WDA + AIF : Get modified PDF source (XSTRING) after user input

Hi guys,
I have this problem.
I have an online adobe interactive form (ZCI layout) with fillable and dynamic attributes sets to 'X'.
The interface is type "Dictionary Based" (not XML).
I've created a wda that calls standard ADS function modules (FP_JOB_OPEN, generated function modules, FB_JOB_CLOSE) to get the xtring of this Form. Then i bind the xstring returned by generated function module in order to show it in a view (that contains an AIF element). Now the user can insert values in input-ready fields.
When the user close the window, i'd like to read the whole (result) xstring of the pdf, filled with the user input.
But when i read the context attached of the pdf (called pdfsource) after user input, it contains only the pdf source, but not the user's input also. The result should be a merge of pdfsource and userdata, in order to save the xstring in a specific path (after conversion).
Is there a way to solve this problem ??

Based on the prompt, which contains column named as "Review Frequency" having values as 1. Monthly 2. Quaterly 3. Yearly.
When User select "Monthly" in pormpt I want to see MTD in Actual and Target column and Indicator depending on these columns.
When User select "Quaterly" in pormpt I want to see QTD in Actual and Target column and Indicator depending on these columns.
Can anybody tell me how can we achieve this?
I think I can achieve this with guided navigation but for that I have to create 3 reports.
Can anybody have any better idea to create just one report and based on user input I can show/hide columns in a single report?
This is mainly related to Balanced ScoreCard.

you have seperate columns for monthly, quarterly, and yearly, right?
In the prompt, save the "Review Frequency" as a Presentation Variable "abc";
In the request, you add actual (MTD) column, edit the formula, use something like:
CASE
WHEN @{abc}='Monthly' THEN "- SalesFacts"."actual (MTD)"
WHEN @{abc}='Quarterly' THEN "- SalesFacts"."actual (QTD)"
ELSE "- SalesFacts"."actual (YTD)"
END
then do the same thing for target column.
