Resetting Display

I plugged my MacBook into a projector using the DVI to VGA adapter and it made my display on my computer huge. I went back to system preferences and changed it to a smaller siz but all my windows and toolbars stayed the same. How do I reset to the factory settings and make everything smaller again?

Go to your preferences and select display option and all the settings for resolution are there.

  • How to reset display settings?

    My Sharp TV only support 1080i, so I use a DVI-DVI cable to connect a monitor, then use Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter connect Sharp TV.
    Then boot Mac mini, I got Open Screen on Monitor, and I set HDMI adapter to 1080i, then I power off and unplug DVI cable and boot again.
    Well, I got what I want on Sharp TV, it is 1080i, but I found a 720p, I selected it, now the TV becomes to black screen with "Invalid video signal"!
    I reconnect monitor, so Sharp TV is ok, but if I unconnect monitor, the sharp TV will be black screen.
    I thought it might be some display settings are saved, because it was good when I first use TV after set to 1080i, but I selected 720p that is PAL TV, not for mine NTSC TV, after that selected, THe sharp TV can't be used alone, how can I reset display settings? what can I do for this case?
    Please help me, GOD!

    In the folder of your main user account, which is generally a folder with your name on it, find and open the Library folder. Then in the Library folder open the Preferences folder. In the Preferences folder open the folder named ByHost. Inside that folder is a file called com.apple.windowserver.xxxxxxxxxxxx.plist where xxxx is a string of numbers and letters. Drag that file out onto the desktop and restart the mini.
    When OS X restarts, if it finds the above mentioned file missing from the expected location, if should build a fresh copy of the file in the original location. The fresh copy will have default values in it so the Mac will forget that bad setting that happened. Hopefully that will cause the display to work again.

    iMac running 10.8.6 doesn't display entire desktop?  Reset display to various options and it doesn't display the entire desktop.  (asking for a friend, not my iMac)

    I think you wanted to say 10.6.8. 10.8.6 does not exist.
    The first thing I think is that zoom may be enabled. On Mac OS X 10.6.8, a way to disable it is to hold the Control key and scroll down with the mouse or trackpad until you can see the whole display. Another way would be to disable zoom in System Preferences > Universal Access

  • How to reset display resolution on a MacBook Pro

    Hi,
    My MBP 15.4 /2.4GHz display is stuck at a low colour display and I am unable to get it back to normal. I was working in MS Remote Desktop Connection, switched into OS X's Universal Access in System Preferences and that's when the fun started.
    I've tried resetting PRAM using CommandOption+PR, but to no avail. My display settings in System Preferences show what one would expect - 1440x900, millions of colours. Changing these and switching back does nothing.
    The thing is, when I start up, the desktop shows the display as it should be for a split second before it garbles the display's colours. It looks like an old Win 3.x box with 16 colour settings.
    Is there a config file I can delete to reset the display, or some other way round this? Any suggestions would be much appreciated...
    Cheers,

    Called Apple support, turned out to be a corrupt preference file; I renamed the preferences folder & rebooted & that resolved the issue. Now have to rebuild / copy back my old preferences...

  • VGA CRT will not "wake up".. help please. Reset display settings shortcut?

    Hello everybody,
    I have a mirror drive doors G4 Tower, Dual 1.25 GHz.
    I have an ADC and a DVI out from the computer. Just had damage to my old studio display so I am attempting to use just one CRT running from the DVI... w/ a DVI to VGA adapter.
    The first time I tried this w/ a CRT it worked fine... I played around w/ monitor settings... still worked fine. Shut down... unhooked CRT and moved that CRT away.
    Tried using it with another CRT and the new CRT never started up... remained on stand-by/sleep.
    I tried with another moniter... this time a LCD/Flatscreen... again VGA and it did the same thing, EXCEPT... this time when I connected the LCD to the adapter and then plugged the adapter into the DVI on my tower the LCD screen would turn on for about 1 second and display my login page. The picture was not perfect though... it was distorted someway.
    Went back to the first CRT... now this one didn't work.
    I think that maybe I have to reset my display settings with some sort of shortcut or something... maybe it's on the wrong frequency?
    I don't know... any help much appreciated. I hate having to use this PC.
    Thanks,
    James

    Turned out to be a faulty DVI to VGA adapter.

    Can you start up in "safe mode"? If so, you can reset your display settings and reboot. If not, you have a problem either with your video card or your DVI/VGA adaptor

  • How to reset display settings? 120 hz over HDMI on 2014 MBPr makes screen go black

    Hi, I have a 15" 2014 MBPr with the 750m. Recently, I bought a TV, a vizio M422i-B1. One of my main reasons for buying the TV was to use it as a third display for my mac. I have two displays already connected, a 27 inch 1440 display over thunderbolt, and another 23" display that is 1080 and connected over the other thunderbolt.
    I got the TV mounted above my desk, and ran an HDMI down from the TV to where I put my laptop, and plugged the TV in to the computer in the HDMI port on my mac.
    It worked, but the refresh rate was set at 60 for the TV on my computer, but since my TV is 120Hz, I set the refresh rate in display settings to 120. It worked fine, and the mouse movement on the TV was more normal looking, so I was happy.
    I put the computer to sleep a little later, and came back, and it wouldn't wake up, even after disconnecting all the displays and other peripherals, it would not wake. I restarted the computer, and with nothing connected it rebooted and worked normally.
    I connected everything one by one, USB stuff first, fine. 1440 display over thunderbolt, and everything was fine. same with the 1080 display.
    I went to plug in the TV again, and everything went black. I had to restart the computer without the TV plugged in to do anything. Restarting with the TV plugged in to the mac doesn't fix anything.
    I know my issue is the refresh rate for the TV being set at 120Hz, and I have to change it back to 60 Hz, my problem is that as far as I know I have to have the TV plugged in to change the refresh rate, but if I plug the TV in it kills the computer. Is there a way to reset the display settings so that it doesn't "remember" that I want the TV to be 120Hz?

    Did you ever figure this out?

  • Reset Display Settings

    Hello,
    Ive just did the Display Update and it reset the screen resolution to 800/600 when it was booted again. When i changed it to what i thought was the right screen resolution, the display turned to black and the monitor displayed a "Not supported" message. I tried to reboot the mac mini using Safe Mode (holding shift) but it wont reset the display for some weird reason. I also tried resetting the PRAM but that didnt work either..
    Is there anything i can do to make it reset back to where it was when i first booted after the update?
    It must be done on boot.. is there a command line interface somewhere during boot i can go in and change some settings there?
    Thanks for the help.

  • Cannot reset display to macmini default

    cannot reset my display (VGA) monitor to default settings on the mac mini
    what are my options?

    I had same problem on my Macbook Air. I accidently changed the display and the screen immediately went blank, leaving me troubled for hours together.
    I could see a 600X800 resolution that too only when I connect an external display. If I change it manualy to the default, it goes back to the blank screen whever I remove the external display connection. I tried restarted in safe mode and then setting up the settings to default. no use, whenever I restart to normal mode, the display again goes blank. I tried zapping PRAM, no use. manually deleting some display settings files left the job useless.
    Here is the solution I found.
    I connected an external display to bring back my 600X800 resolution, installed team viewer and connected using my iPhone to my Macbook. Then I removed the external display resulting a blank screen again. But the teamviewer display on my iPhone told me the right story. I managed to change the settings back using my iPhone and I got my display back!

  • New Bug?   Sliding effect canot reset "display" property correctly

    Hello there.
    First I want to say I love the effect, everything is dropdead
    perfect, well, execept this one little bug.
    What is happening is that if you use the slider effect on
    something with it's display="none" then spry cannot reset it to
    none again.
    Here is the code:
    <input type="button" onclick="slide_hidden2.start();"
    value="Slide Example" />
    <div class="animationContainer hideInitially"
    id="example5">
    <div>
    Example - Slide from 0% to 100% in 2 seconds
    Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consetetur sadipscing elitr, sed
    diam nonumy eirmod tempor invidunt ut labore et dolore magna
    aliquyam erat, sed diam voluptua. At vero eos et accusam et
    justo duo dolores et ea rebum. Stet clita kasd gubergren, no
    sea takimata sanctus est Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet.
    </div>
    </div>
    <script type="text/javascript">
    var slide_hidden2 = new Spry.Effect.Slide('example5',
    {duration: 2000, from: '0%', to: '100%', toggle: true,
    scaleContent:true});
    </script>
    And here is the CSS setup:
    .hideInitially{
    display: none;
    .animationContainer{
    height: 200px;
    width: 400px;
    background-color: #CCCCCC;
    border: medium double rgb(250,0,255);
    }

    The border is what is holding it up it looks like. Maybe
    apply a style to the div inside like this, seems to work. The
    medium border assigned to the containing element is not taken into
    account when the div collapses to 0% I think:
    <style type="text/css">
    @charset "UTF-8";
    .hideInitially{
    display: none;
    .animationContainer{
    width: 400px;
    background-color: #CCCCCC;
    .border {border: medium double rgb(250,0,255);
    height: 200px;
    </style>
    </head>
    <body>
    <form action="sandbox.html" runat="server">
    <input type="button" onClick="slide_hidden2.start();"
    value="Slide Example" />
    <div class="animationContainer hideInitially"
    id="example5">
    <div class="border">
    Example - Slide from 0% to 100% in 2 seconds
    Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consetetur sadipscing elitr, sed

    sea takimata sanctus est Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet.
    </div>
    </div>
    <script type="text/javascript">
    var slide_hidden2 = new Spry.Effect.Slide('example5',
    {duration: 2000, from: '0%', to: '100%', toggle: true,
    scaleContent:true});
    </script>
    </form>
    </body>

  • STB sticks on starting up after reset (displays --:--)

    Heya, I reset a new STB. The box display just shows --:--, and the TV display shows "Starting Up... One Moment Please." I've left it at that screen for hours, reset, left it again, it never progresses, never displays the time, etc. Other STBs in the house work, my internet works, etc.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    the dashes mean that the box is not getting a signal. Its going to be one of three things.
    1. The coax to the stb is connected incorrectly or has a poor connection.  Make sure that the coax from the wall to the stb is connected to the "fios tv in" or "RF in" on the back of the stb. If this is correct. Try disconnecting and reconnecting to make sure you have a good connection
    2. It could be that the coax is not connected to a Verizon broadcast. Has there been service in this location before? Was it connected to the Verizon system?
    3. It could be a problem with the STB. You can test this by bringing this box to a known working location, or bring another working box to this location. If the problem follows the box, then it is the box. If it says in this location, its the wire.

  • Power Manager resets Display Brightness (T 410)

    Has anyone experienced an issues with power manager where the following occurs? I have power manager set so on battery my display brightness is 10 and on AC the brightness is 15. If I restart Windows 7 and am on battery power, the AC setting resets to 10 and must be manually reset once I plug in the power cord. I am running windows 7 64 (not the Lenovo build) but have used system update and am currently up to date with no problems listed in device manager. Any ideas.
    Thanks.

  • Can't reset display after online game

    I just tried an online demo of Runescape (web-based online adventure game). It seems to have changed my display settings -- my display is now a little blurry, maybe slightly stretched, and sort of unstable (when I move the mouse, the display wavers a little bit). This happens ONLY on my account on the iMac. My dad's account and my sister's account are completely unaffected. However, every time I log into my account, the display is a little distorted.
    Does anyone know how I can re-set my display to the original high resolution. Or does anyone know what file(s) got corrupted?
    Thanks,

  • Learn to Play - Resetting Display Preferences.

    While I was exploring guitar 'Learn to Play', my little boy mashed the keyboard resulting in the lesson display preferences changing and now I can't figure out how to change them back.
    Specifically, the guitar neck at the bottom of the display has disappeared and the instructional video has reduced in size by about half. As well, underneath the lesson timeline there is what appears to be a purple audio track that wasn't there when I started but now I can't get rid of. I have scoured these forums and the Internet in general and can't seem to find instructions on how to return to the default display preferences.
    I've attempted to but can't located and trash the plist and cs files. I can't locate it by browsing the Library > Preferences or by Spotlighting it. I did find an ilife09.plist. Should I mess with that? I can't wrap my head around that one; they're not where they should be, it makes me wonder if Garageband 09 even maintains these types of preference files?
    Because it's simple, I then attempted to trash the Garageband application file and reinstall from DVD. My efforts were fruitless. Upon opening the freshly reinstalled Garageband and loading lesson one guitar Learn to Play, the display preferences were as my boy left them.
    Help please!
