Resize a LUN?

I'm using Xsan with an Xserve RAID and I'm trying to get the resize LUN feature to work.
As a test I had three 750 GB drives in a RAID 5 array. This was initialized in Xsan as a LUN and added to a storage pool. I then used RAID Admin to add two more 750 GB drives to that LUN. The resize in RAID admin completed fine but I can't see the extra space in Xsan.
Does this not work at all or am I doing something wrong?

there is a post here
"Once LUNs are labeled in Xsan Admin, they are identified with a specific sector size that cannot be altered without recreating the volume. Therefore using RAID admin to expand LUNs is completely incompatible with Xsan. This issue has been discussed in other posts on this site" from the link..
why not just create the new lun and add it to your storage pool?

  • Resizing a LUN with the lastest Solaris 10 SPARC

    1. I followed the doc ID 368840.1 to partition the disk use for ASM.
    It looks like this:
Part Tag Flag Cylinders Size Blocks
    0 unassigned wm 3 - 858 1016.50MB (856/0/0) 2081792
    1 unassigned wu 0 0 (0/0/0) 0
    2 backup wu 0 - 859 1021.25MB (860/0/0) 2091520

    6 unassigned wm 0 0 (0/0/0) 0
    7 unassigned wm 0 0 (0/0/0) 0
    2. I re-size the LUN from the storage array to 9GB using "0. Auto configure".
I see the new size looks like this:
Part Tag Flag Cylinders Size Blocks
    0 root wm 0 0 (0/0/0) 0
    1 swap wu 0 0 (0/0/0) 0
    2 backup wu 0 - 7757 9.00GB (7758/0/0) 18867456

    7 unassigned wm 0 0 (0/0/0) 0
    3. Then I re-partition the LUN using format.
Part Tag Flag Cylinders Size Blocks
    0 unassigned wm 3 - 7756 8.99GB (7754/0/0) 18857728
    1 unassigned wm 0 0 (0/0/0) 0

    7 unassigned wm 0 0 (0/0/0) 0
    4. I can't label the LUN. (I have done this with previous Solaris SPARC 10 releases and it works fine)
    partition> l
Ready to label disk, continue? y
    Warning: error writing VTOC.
    Warning: no backup labels
    Label failed.
It looks like the new Solaris updates also change this behavior, but don't know what the new requirements are.
    Any idea?
    Thanks much in advance,

I would suggest changing the media you burned it on. That always seems to be the issue with things like this. Search the forums for suggestions on what works.

  • Help with Resizing LUNS on Hitachi 9980

Hi everyone, I need a little help here resizing my LUNS on our Hitachi 9980. I currently have a 1 TB and I want to increase or resize this to 2 TB. I am wondering if someone can help me here. This is something I haven't done before. Is there a step by step way of doing this. I was told that it could be done off line or online. Which is safer? Do I also need to reboot the Host after the resizing? Thanks for your assistance.

  • Expand ASM Diskgroup on RAC 11.2 online

    Hi,
I am currently in search of an article or document which describes the following workflow:
Expand ASM Diskgroup on RAC 11.2 online:
Resize physical LUN (no Infos needed)
    Resize Multipath
    Resize Partition
    Resize ASM Disk
Resize ASM DiskGroup ( I dont know if this is necessary?)
It is an Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.5 with 11.2 Clusterware. We use ISCSI Disk, ASMLib and Multipath (Linux -> multipathd).
The main goal is to do that online.
Does anyone know of such an article, or else has other tips regarding this scenario?
    Kind Regards,

  • Is it safe to increase LUN size of ASM disk online 11gR2 ?

I have an Oracle 11gr2 ASM in a RAC, using an EMC SAN. I have one Disk Group (DATA), with one disk (DISK1), configured with external redundancy [Flash Recovery Area is non-ASM]. Red Hat Linux.
My storage is a 450GB LUN, and I want to grow it by 150GB. I should not add a 150GB LUN as a new disk, as the disks would be uneven. And I don't want to create a new disk group, as that's more admin.
So I want to increase my LUN from 450GB to 600GB, which can be done online by the UNIX admin. Then I can resize the disk in ASM and all should be OK. This is a production system.
Has anyone actually done this ? Does it work ? I have seen posts worried about changes to partition tables.

    Hi there.
Adding more luns to the ASM diskgroups one way to do it.
And as any way, have pros and cons (maybe no cons at all)
but, think in some cases you are charged per internal BU (yeah, as today with Cloud outside being more cheap) per task
hypothetically, Imagine 200 USD per each change per team involved
    new lun
    Storage
    Unix
    DBA
    600 USD
now imagine, a fixed 50USD fee to make a lun grow as all is set, and DBA can handle as part of BAU
that is 600 vs 50That is only internal funny money - if they need the space, they (your internal client) will pay for it. If you just extend the LUN you still will give up parallelism gained by multiple LUNs and that parallelism could cost your client $$$ because of processing time charges.
Hypothetically, in a "future release", I would not be surprised if you are able to store your database files on a "cloud" architecture.

    Hi all,
I've got a 3310 partition that I'd like to resize, filesystem is becoming full. The configuration is like this :
Two node cluster, with metasets, two 3310 disk arrays configured with partitions, not logical volumes. Both 3310 have the same configuration, and are mirrored in SVM

So I want to grow the ld1-02 partition up to 40GB, last partition of logical drive is not used. For safety reasons I decided to detach the 5GB submirror also, as the partition will probably be resized too ( temporarly )
    So I decided to :
    detach the submirrors,
    unmap the luns,
    delete the last partition,
    resize the partition ld1-02
Resize the partition ld1-03 ( which will recreate the ld1-04 with the remaining free space )
    Map the partitions
    Attach the submirrors
Do the same with the second submirror which is on the second 3310
When I try to do this I've got this message :

Repartitioning may cause data to be lost.
    Change partition table? yes
    sccli: lun map exists
Any Idea why I can't delete the last partition ? Do I need to delete all partitions and recreate them ? Is there an easier way to do this ?
    Thanks for your help

  • Resize mirrored ZFS rpool

    I have a ZFS rpool mirrored with 2 hard disks. I need to resize it with bigger capacity. Below is my questions;
    1. Can we resize a mirrored rpool?
    2. If yes, How? (Please provide me the source) Thanks.
    3. If the rpool is using local disk and i have other storage LUNs can be attached... what is the best practice to increase the rpool size?
    4. If resizing is not possible, can someone shed some light how could we migrate a mount point from rpool (local disk) to new pool (SAN storage). Please advise.
    Thank you.

Yes, it is possible to increase the root pool size by either attaching a larger disk and detaching the smaller disk or by using zpool replace to do an outright replacement. If you attach a disk from remote storage, so that you have a local disk and remote disk for a mirrored root pool, then there is a risk that if the remote disk is slow to come up after a boot, for example, the pool might be degraded. Similarly, if you use remote storage for both root pool disks. Forcing loading the drivers early in the boot process can help this.
Which Solaris 10 release is this?
Does the existing root pool disk have existing unused slices or is all the disk space in slice 0?
There is a way to expand the root pool disk slice if existing unused slices exist but its a bit more complicated, but I can walk you through it.
The doc that describes root pool disk replacement is here:

  • Unable to detect iSCSI LUN size change on Solaris 10

I resized (grew) an OpenFiler iSCSI LUN, but I cannot get Solaris 10 to pick up the change. Using the type -> autoconfigure in format and relabeling the disk ought to do the trick but it does not work. Does anybody know how to overcome this?

Hmm, what filesystem do you have on the disk?
    .7/M.

  • ISCSI Volume Resizing

I have resized the volume, but connecting to a current server and one to test with shows the volume at the same size under Device Manager. Why is 2008 and 2008 R2 servers showing the old size and I cannot expand it.
The device is a PX12-400r with the most recent firmware.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I agree with storageman that those statements aren't what someone should hear from support.
I should be able to get these below questions answered from support:
    1. Why is it not showing up in a mutliple 2008/2008 R2 servers' disk management as unallocated (a drive that could be expanded)?
    2. Is there a way I can get around this issue (a workaround)?
    3. If we both followed the same procedure, then why am I getting a different result?
    4. Why aren't these steps documented in the User Manual?
    5. Is there limitations of the expand iSCSI drive process, (an example if all the space is, nearly, previously allocated and a final drive is created with the remaining space and the previous drive(s) are removed that gives up free space, is not able to be expanded properly)?
    6. Has the software, on the device, been vetted enought to determine the answers to above?
This is a question for moving forward:
How I am I supposed migrate all the data to another iSCSI drive, that will be the recreated LUN currently in use, when I do not have enough space on the current system to give it 8TB of space?
If I knew that I would be in this predicament, I would've just created another 8TB iSCSI drive and migrated to it, but by taking the extra 2TB into the current drive I cannot do that. And I cannot take it away now that it has been given this extra space. To me seems like a poor design for Enterprise level, as well as a poor answer.

  • Does expanding LUN where oracle db resides will make it corrupt?

    as the question goes, regarding 11g, 10g db etc.;
i'm about to do a LUN expansion for an oracle database and i thought i might need a few advices from oracle dba in here or anyone who had the experience doing LUN expansion thathas a oracle database resides in it.
i concerns (naturally, since i had never done this):
    * will this excercise corrupt oracle database?
    * what sort of contigencies should i make? will it be enough doing a full backup and running backup check or do i need to try to restore the backup on a similar setup somewhere?

Resizing it to be bigger? And how is that LUN used? Cooked file system? Raw? ASM? Another storage management device?
    * will this excercise corrupt oracle database?Potentially yes.
    * what sort of contigencies should i make? will it be enough doing a full backup and running backup check or do i need to try to restore the backup on a similar setup somewhere?Any major storage change should ideally be preceded with a full backup. Better safe than sorry.

  • Window 0xa00003 (Eclipse) sets an MWM hint indicating it isn't resizable

    Hi,
I am trying to run my RCPTT tests on Travis with xvfb and metacity. When I run the tests I got this error : "Window manager warning: Window 0xa00003 (Eclipse) sets an MWM hint indicating it isn't resizable, but sets min size 504 x 334 and max size 2147483647 x 2147483647; this doesn't make much sense."
Travis provides xvfb and my script installs metacity like this :
    addons:
    apt:
    packages:
    - metacity
Then xvfb and metacity are started as following :
    - "/sbin/start-stop-daemon --start --quiet --pidfile /tmp/custom_xvfb_99.pid --make-pidfile --background --exec /usr/bin/Xvfb -- :99 -ac -screen 0 1440x900x16"
    - sh -e /etc/init.d/xvfb start
    - sleep 10 # give xvfb some time to start
    - metacity --sm-disable --replace &
    - sleep 10 # give metacity some time to start
Each tests start with a context which set the size of the eclipse window :
    get-eclipse-window | get-object | invoke setSize 1440 900
I also tried using maximize instead of the setSize.
When I run my tests with an AUT based on Luna all is working normally, I got this error only with an AUT based on Mars.
Does someone has already encountered this issue?

    Hi Zach,
I'm guessing you're correct that that particular bit of functionality
wasn't implemented for MySQL enablement yet (I've also asked someone
else to confirm). The MySQL support that was contributed hasn't been
updated in quite a while due to lack of resources or MySQL experts.
We'd love to have someone pick it up and contribute fixes back to the
    project however! :)

  • Tunefs.ocfs2 resize Issue

I have a RAC cluster, OEL 5.2 patched to latest. Storage is from EMC Clariion cx3-40 using Power Path.
Shared LUN presented as 5GB. Partitioned full LUN and created ocfs2 filesystem on it.
All worked fine. Now I am trying to increase the size of the filesystem.
    Steps taken -
Using fdisk I deleted the partition, then recreated it to the larger size.
    Before partition recreated -
    Disk /dev/emcpowerj: 10.7 GB, 10737418240 bytes
    166 heads, 62 sectors/track, 2037 cylinders
    Units = cylinders of 10292 * 512 = 5269504 bytes
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
    /dev/emcpowerj1 1 1018 *5238564* 83 Linux
    After partition recreated -
    Disk /dev/emcpowerj: 10.7 GB, 10737418240 bytes
    166 heads, 62 sectors/track, 2037 cylinders
    Units = cylinders of 10292 * 512 = 5269504 bytes
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
    /dev/emcpowerj1 1 2037 *10482338* 83 Linux
So next I use tunefs.ocfs2 to resize the filesystem -
    # tunefs.ocfs2 -S /dev/emcpowerj1
    [root@bkvlrac01 PowerPath]# tunefs.ocfs2 -S -vvv /dev/emcpowerj1
    Resize specifications: 0 bytes:
    Opening device "/dev/emcpowerj1"
    Device "/dev/emcpowerj1" opened
    Running operation "resize_volume"
    Opening device "/dev/emcpowerj1"
    Device "/dev/emcpowerj1" opened
Filesystem on device "/dev/emcpowerj1" is already 163705 clusters; nothing to doClosing device "/dev/emcpowerj1"
    Device closed
    Closing device "/dev/emcpowerj1"
    Device closed
I tried it with the filesystem mounted and also with it unmounted. Each time it says there is nothing to do. It seems like it does not recognize the additional size of the partition.
fsck.ocfs2 shows the filesystem is clean, but if you multiply the "Block size" by "Number of blocks" or the "Number of clusters" by "Cluster size" it only sees the original 5GB -
    Checking OCFS2 filesystem in /dev/emcpowerj1:
    Label: <NONE>
    UUID: 6FB3CC2D7E7B4E63B9EE4BD1C62E24B5
    Number of blocks: 1309640
    Block size: 4096
    Number of clusters: 163705
    Cluster size: 32768
    Number of slots: 5
** Skipping slot recovery because -n was given. **
/dev/emcpowerj1 is clean. It will be checked after 20 additional mounts.
What must I be missing? Thanks.

Thanks for the quick response...and it does show me an error!
The power path pseudoname and three of the paths show 10GB -
    120 145 10482338 emcpowerj1
    8 17 10482338 sdb1
    8 161 10482338 sdk1
    65 193 10482338 sdac1
But one of the paths shows only 5GB -
    65 49 5238564 sdt1
Yet, fdisk on that device is correct -
    #fdisk -l /dev/sdt
    Disk /dev/sdt: 10.7 GB, 10737418240 bytes
    166 heads, 62 sectors/track, 2037 cylinders
    Units = cylinders of 10292 * 512 = 5269504 bytes
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
    /dev/sdt1 1 2037 10482338 83 Linux
    [root@bkvlrac01 tmp]# partprobe
    [root@bkvlrac01 tmp]# cat /proc/partitions | grep 10482338
    8 17 10482338 sdb1
    8 161 10482338 sdk1
    65 49 10482338 sdt1
    65 193 10482338 sdac1
    120 145 10482338 emcpowerj1
Great! But the tunefs.ocfs2 still did not work, so I checked the other two nodes in the cluster and found that the /proc/partitions is worng for the /dev/emcpower partition only...
Same on both of the nodes even after partprobe -
    120 128 10485760 emcpoweri
    120 129 5238564 emcpoweri1
    8 17 10482338 sdb1
    8 161 10482338 sdk1
    65 49 10482338 sdt1
    65 193 10482338 sdac1
One difference is that the emcpower psuedoname is different between node1 and 2&3...but this has never caused an issue in the past.
So, what does this mean? And why is the os seeing it this way? Can it be fixed ;)
I will try rebooting the cluster nodes to see if it rebuilds /proc correctly and will report back.

  • Can we expand OCFS2 mount point Size by adding additional LUN?

can we expand OCFS2 mount point Size by adding additional LUN?

Looks like it should be possible....see if this helps:
    extract from:http://oss.oracle.com/projects/ocfs2/dist/documentation/ocfs2_faq.html
    # Can OCFS2 file systems be grown in size?
Yes, you can grow an OCFS2 file system using tunefs.ocfs2. It should be noted that the tool will only resize the file system and not the underlying partition. You can use fdisk(8) (or any appropriate tool for your disk array) to resize the partition.
    # What do I need to know to use fdisk(8) to resize the partition?
To grow a partition using fdisk(8), you will have to delete it and recreate it with a larger size. When recreating it, ensure you specify the same starting disk cylinder as before and a ending disk cylinder that is greater than the existing one. Otherwise, not only will the resize operation fail, but you may lose your entire file system. Backup your data before performing this task.
