Reverting to my cloned system

I have a bootable copy of my HD saved to my laci drive from about a month ago. Earlier today tiger ate my clock and refuses to give it back. Disk Utility freezes and won't repair. When I boot off laci, everything works perfectly. How to I get rid of the clock-eating version of tiger and replace it with the clone on my laci drive?
Better yet, since I know where the corruption screwing everything up is, is there maybe a way I could just replace those files with the uncorrupted ones on my laci drive? The problem is in the core system files (I'll look and see if I can pinpoint which one).
Anyway, which would be easier? I have a lot of new files created since this clone and backing them all up to revert the system will be a real pain in the behind. Then again, I hesitate to begin playing with anything called 'core system files'.

You can clone your backup to the main drive in the same way you cloned to the backup. You will have to erase the main drive before cloning.
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
2. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
5. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
6. Select the startup or source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
For added precaution you can boot into safe mode before doing the clone.

  • DETERMINE_PROFILES error on cloned system

    Hi,
To get timings on an EHPI upgrade to EHP4, we cloned a dual stack system.  ABAP and JAVA are both running without any apparent problems on the cloned system.  During the EHPI upgrade soon after starting the JAVA portion of the upgrade, however, it hangs in DETERMINE_PROFILES looking for a profile for the original system.  I've reviewed the following without finding any references to the old SID or the old hostname.
    /etc/hosts
    /etc/services
    /usr/sap/sapservices
/sapmnt/<SID>/profile ( and no, there aren't any extraneous profiles nor is msgservu or enservu specified)
    /usr/sap/<SID>/SYS/profile
    tnsnames.ora
environmental settings for sidadm and orasid
configtool ( I also exported the cluster information, unzipped everything, and grepped )
Anyone have any ideas on where else to look?

Anyone out there got some notes on a quick and easy method as to how I can do this?
Perhaps end-dating certain users is an possibility - but just trying to determine the safest way to do that and keep the list flexible
    Thanks

    Hi,
I beleive end dating the user is a best way.
You can use fnd_user_pkg.disableuser('USERNAME'). This will end date the users.

  • My new HD with a cloned system and apps won't boot the G5 when installed. The clone drive is being journal formatted via usb with OS9 checked in disk utility. First time around, I didn't check OS9, and the G5 didn't boot from the clone drive. Advice?

My system is a G5 PPC with 2x 2Gig 64bit processors (dual core). 6 gig of ram on board, running OSX 10.4.11. I recently discovered the main drive was actually a laptop drive someone had stuffed in there! (The machine was given to me - yes, really). So I bought a nice new WD Caviar Black 500Gig HD. Hooked it up via usb adapter (G5 won't see it internally). Disk Utility saw it, formatted it with Journal option selected, but not OS9 install.
After that, I cloned the data on the slow laptop drive complete with all the applications onto the Caviar HD.Sure enough, the G5 can see the Caviar HD with everything on it.
However, when putting the Caviar HD in where the laptop drive once was, the G5 would not see the disk at all.
So now, I'm reformatting the drive again but this time with OS9 checkbox ticked in Disk Utility. After this, I will install it into the machine alongside the offensively sluggish laptop drive, and as long as the G5 sees the Caviar HD internally, I will clone from there, rather than via USB hookup.
I hope this way the system will speed up! There's no way the machine is running as it can do with a pokey little laptop drive in it spinning at 5k surely!
I am assuming the Tiger 10.4.11 is genuine (I think it is - the X symbol is present on the folder), but I don't have the original disk...
Any suggestions? Has anyone had this experience?

Hi BDAqua... downstairs away from unit at the moment. It's a Western Digital Caviar Black 500Gig, twin processors, SATA3 / 6, 64Meg cache on-board... nice. Very quite with minimal vibration (slight).
However as I'm here I can announce I've solved the problem! The G5 had an original Seagate Barracuda HDD on board as a slave drive. I backed up the dat off that onto the Caviar Black via USB adapter. Then Disk Utility wiped the Barracuda safely.
Then, I installed SuperDuper! to clone the data from the sluggish laptop master drive onto the Barracuda; I also told SuperDuper! to boot the G5 from the newly image Barracuda.
After it had done the job I switched off the machine (it may well have rebooted - I was downstairs watching England fail at Eurovision Song Contest), took out the laptop drive and started up the G5.
Mercifully, it rebooted fine! All details and programs are intact and functioning right down to my screensaver.
I can report that the machine is noticably (considerably in the case of Logic8 and JamPack) faster and swifter at sourcing data.
Everything is backed up and I now have a speedier G5! Hurrah!!
I now have a spare 80Gig drive to hand in a caddy (originally a spare backup) that was made about the same time as the G5. It's my guess that it would fit the G5 internally and probably be seen ok by the system.
It's worth a try. The Caviar Black will have to go into a caddy and become my backup disk. It has a clone of the OS and all apps, so if something goes badly wrong, I'm safe.
Just a thought: The more advanced Leopard and Snow Leopard OS may struggle in G5's because the OS itself may require faster HDD's that cannot go into the G5 normally? I see many reports of Snow Leopard running like a bag of bones in people's G5's. Perhaps it's something to do with data retrieval speeds?
    I'm sticking with Tiger!
I hope this story has assisted someone somewhere... and many thanks to all you kind people who offer to help.

  • Reverting to a virgin system with pacman

I'd like to revert my system to a virgin state with pacman (i.e. a fresh install without nuking the root partition and installing via the CD).  Is there an easy way I can remove all the packages except for the system-base ones, alsa, etc or am I just better off nuking the partition and installing from the CD?

Pacpal has an option to find files which don't belong to any installed package. For example, if you wanted to find all unpackaged files in /etc, you would run this command:
    pacpal --list-unpkgd /etc
After removing all but the base packages, it should be useful in finding leftover files. As already mentioned, some system configuration files are not considered part of the package that creates them and you shouldn't remove them, so use it with caution.

  • Cloned system disc, all referenced Aperture files offline

I was setting up my Aperture 3 library, all files currently located on the system disc as a trial of using Aperture, but I set up Aperture to use referenced location as I did not want all of the files (eventually well over 2TB of images) copied into the library. All was going well until my system drive started logging errors, the drive was failing. I quickly obtained a new drive, restored a recent backup to the new drive, moved it in as the new system disc and everything initially looked to be perfect. All applications launched, all of my mail, etc. was on the new restored system on the new physical system disc.
I opened Aperture, it launched perfectly fine, I selected a project, all of my thumbnails were there, so far so good. I then double clicked on a thumbnail to open the image for editing and no adjustments were active, the image was marked as offline, as were ALL images in the library for every project.
NOTE, NO files were moved, they are all still on the (new) system disc, as is the Aperture library.
I selected a project, selected one of the images in the library and then hit Command A to select ALL images in the project folder, go to the Locate Referenced FIles File option. Here is where things break badly. Nothing I have tried will actually let me select all images in the Locate Referenced Files dialog, if I try Command A I get the system warning beep and no files are selected. If I navigate to the first file in the selection of all images that I highlighted initially in the project folder to enable selecting the entire folder of images, I can select it in the bottom half of the dialog and the Reconnect and Reconnect All buttons activate but ONLY with the ONE selected image in the bottom of the dialog. If I hit Reconnect ALL ONLY the single selected image is reconnected. Nothing I have tried will actually reconnect all images.
There is no way I am manually going to hand select over 4000 images (in my initial testing of the library using images located on the system disc, but setup as referenced) by hand to reconnect them by hand. I am gun shy now about trying to use Referenced Files with my very large set of images, no way am I adding my over 2TB of images into Aperture using referenced files if I cannot guarantee if the images move, or apparently if the Aperture installation is moved to a new system disc, that I can still access all of the images without having to manually add each one by hand.
I have scoured the Internet looking for every hint I can to get the images back connected, but nothing has worked, other than manually adding the images one at a time.
    Any ideas???

I would restart everything and try again.
In to top half of the dialog, select only one image. Do not try to select more than one.
Match it to the corresponding Master shown in the file browser in the bottom half of the dialog. Click "Reconnect All".
You might do this for only one Project. For me it's always worked regardless of how many Projects the files w. missing Masters come from. I filter Photos view for "File Status" is "Missing, select all, and bring up the Locate Referenced Files" dialog.
I have done this for hundreds of thousands of files with no problems. Aperture regularly loses some links to Masters, but I have always been able to reconnect every image.
If Aperture doesn't do it automatically, "Verify" your selected images by clicking the button on the dialog.
If it doesn't work on retry, then you would start to look into possible problems with naming drives and permissions.

  • Help with importing Mail messages from cloned system

I decided to format and reinstall Snow Leopard on my iMac. Before I did, I backed everything up and, following Apples instructions, thought I had saved all my mail messages etc. It didnt work, or at least, I couldnt get it to work!
So, I need help getting my messages back.
I have Time Machine on an external firewire drive but cant access backups earlier than my recent new install. I also have a clone of my old installation on an external ( USB) drive that I can boot to that contains all of the earlier Mail messages I want.
How can I move the mail messages from that account to my new installation?

  • Font Bug in Flash...fonts reverting to system default

Maybe I am doing something stupid...you never know.
I typically use a shared lib to embed, then link fonts. I
have SEVERAL flash files that have suddenly started to do this.
Fonts that ARE embedded and ARE linked to shared lib swf...suddenly
stop working and I get a font in parenthesis (which I named and
embedded) with 'System Default" Even when I re-embed and TRY to
re-select the new font, it keeps reverting the the bad system
    default.
If I open a NEW text box it will let me use the RE-embeded
font. If I try to change the font that won't release it self from
the "system default" version...it will let me...
But all the fonts that are in the file already have suddenly
changed themselves. I was cutting and pasting buttons into other
files using the same linkages, and everytime I pasted the button
into a new file, the font automatically changed itself the the
    system default.
I tried everything I know. I turned on the preferences to
warn me if a font is missing...and cutting and pasting these
buttons into a new file (that somehow won't recognize the correct
font)...THE WARNING is not triggered...though the font will turn
    into a system font...
I am at a loss..and there is NO WAY to repair this in my
files without re-creating them all over again fonts., which is
    quite impossible.

I know this is an old post, but I have a big problem like this.
I have my web page built in CS3, I used Anna font in static text. I used this font well, no problems. Now I am with CS4, and Flash can read the font well... inside Flash (editor, not player), it shows it in italics (this fonts doesn't have italics), and there is no way to use in regular. If I turn to another font and then, turn back to Anna, neither. And sometimes, automatically turn to Times or another. BUT... sometimes (I don't know how), Flash reads the font. But the static text that doesn't work will never work. And the other yes... AND I CAN MIX BOTH TEXTS IN THE SAME MOVIE! They have exactly the same attributes, but one is working and the other isn't. You can see it in this capture (note that Anna only has Regular Style)
You can see the page working in http://www.mariomey.com.ar and the now exported with CS4 in http://www.mariomey.com.ar/main2.swf (look all the fonts, it looks the same in Flash editor).
    Anybody...?

  • Reverting to previous system.Nothing on Desktop.Finder opens automatically

On my MacBook there is nothing showing on the Desktop. I think I did something like doing a restart while holding down the F12 button or maybe another one. I read it somewhere. I can't remember. (The reason I did that was to solve the problem of the finder window opening automatically on startup which was the result of a software update some time in 2008.) It didn't work anyway.
In order to fix the problem of nothing on the desktop I reinstalled 10.5.6. from my installation disks. Nothing changed except that now I have a Previous System folder which takes up about 15Gig and I'm getting short on space.
So, how do I get rid of the new install, revert to the previous system and get my disk space back?
Also, any ideas how to get my Desktop showing what I have? In Preferences from the finder menu I've ticked the boxes to show Hard Disks, CD's etc and Connected servers but still nothing shows.
Finally, how do I stop the Finder window from opening automatically at startup? Whew!

you can't revert to a previous system unless you have a backup of it. I take it you don't have one. make a new user and see if everything works correctly there.
If it does you should migrate what you need from your old home directory to the new user and delete the old user.
You can delete Previous Systems folder.

  • Revert System Update?

WOW, I feel like I've made a big mistake.  I applied the updates from System Update and now my system is not even usable.  It takes 20 minutes to start or shutdown and all my networking settings are gone, my desktop settings are gone, what else is gone?
I can't start system update again without getting an error that the configuration can't be read.
Can I revert?  If so, how?
Please help ASAP!  I may need to re-image the system if I can't get it up and running in VERY short order.

Well, I'm trying the Windows System Restore to see if I can "revert" to a pre-System Update state.

  • Trashing "previous systems" folder - applications in use by current system

Hi, Ive made a total mess of reinstalling tiger (probably cos I didnt do a clean install).
everything is working fine, but now ive got a "previous systems" folder on my hardrive that weighs something like 40GB. I was advised it was okay to trash this folder as so long as i'd got any user prefernces out of application support and copied them to the new system. I did this, but next time I went to open my email I was told I couldnt because the application was located in the trash. i tried opening text edit also, and the same problem. so the new system is clearly running applications out of the previous system folder. why?
can someone please tell me how to sort this out? my harddisk is now overflowing due to this folder, and I dont know what i can and cant delete from it (or even where to put the stuff I DONT delete). Help!

There may be a way to get the previous Home Directory files from
the old Previous System folder; and under certain conditions, this
is possible. The error in your current situation appears to be due
to not selecting to save old user accounts & settings in the new one.

There are times where it is preventative to have a backup clone on
some external bootable hard disk drive; and test it before proceeding
in an upgrade or update, then you could revert back by bringing the
clone back into the computer's hard disk drive, if needed. Without a
cloned system, or ideally a complete hard drive clone, this is harder.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • How do I clone a fully operational system that relies on Windows 7 for the underlying operating system?

I'm a retired IT professional desiring to assist a friend who owns a small business who recently experienced very malicious attacks on her computers from unknown parties operating anonymously on the Internet. Because
of her lack of preparation for such events, her future ability to continue to conduct her business was seriously threatened. The incident revealed, to my friend, the need to be prepared to deal with spontaneously occurring problems that create suspicious conditions
that arise with modern computer software before they can be analyzed in a sufficiently comprehensive manner to have an opinion regarding the appropriate course of action for obtaining a permanent remedy. In that, the ability to quickly react on the basis of
    only suspicion is the goal.
I want to recommend an approach that involves maintaining an offline image of an operational system that is capable of running any of her computers. This image needs to include all of the software required to run
her business. In that, it is not limited to the operating system. This single image could then be used to restore any computer to a known reliable state should the need arise. This technique will also insure that each computer has sufficiently similar capability
to allow them to substitute for each other. Insofar as image restoration is itself an operation susceptible to causing unacceptable business delay I'm also recommending that each of the identical computers (i.e., from a hardware perspective) operate in a multi-boot
environment where a virtually offline backup can be instantiated via a simple reboot (i.e., an operation that all users of the Windows operating systems turn to when strange behavior is first observed). My intention is to limit the cloned system (i.e., partition
or C: drive) to the operational software. The business data along with storage for temporary data will be isolated on other partitions (i.e, mounted with other drive letters) accessible by each instance of the software eligible for multi-boot operation.
This kind of operation is something that I know how to setup on older versions of the Windows operating system. However, Microsoft has now dropped support for all of those operating systems and my much more limited
experience with the currently supported operating systems reveals that changes to the boot process will necessitate making changes to the specific preparations needed to build such an environment.
Before recommending that my friend replace all of her computers with new ones, that includes paying for new operating system (i.e., Windows) licenses, I need some assurance that the new operating systems are as
good as the old ones in this respect. These need to be relatively inexpensive desktop computers and we're only talking about a few of them. Let's say fewer than half a dozen. My friend is a sole proprietor and even though her business has become completely
dependent on what was once called personal computers she must operate on a fairly tight budget. This especially includes the budget for technology.
The articles I've been able to find on the Microsoft support websites seem to treat multi-boot as a situation where someone is running different versions of possibly difference operating systems whereas my need
to produce a single image that will both run on multiple computers as well as multiple partitions on the same computer. I'd appreciate finding some technical advice that applies to building such a system using a supported version of Windows.

I tried the image creation/restoration described by Jared.  I don't think it makes much sense to rely on an operational system to do such a restoration therefore I opted for method 3 which involves using a "System Repair Disk".  My first
reaction is what a crude tool.  The image creation process had no trouble putting the image on a simple network share.  However, it appeared as though the restoration couldn't even connect with the device.  I then copied the files to a USB drive.
In this case the repair disk said it couldn't find the files even though they were there.  It offered no mechanism to even look and see what was there.  It appears as though it will only find the image if it is located in a folder by the certain
name used on creation and it is in root directory.  Not very handy.
As ugly as all that was when we finally come to the point of making the restore it looks like the only option is to restore the entire disk, which in my case would mean also restoring both the windows partition and the recovery partition.  This just
isn't what I want to do.  It is also something I wouldn't even consider doing unless it was the only possible way to recover from a failed hard drive.
In summary, unless I've completely failed to notice how it works that just isn't going to work.
I hope there is something better than this.  What about WinPE and ImageX?
Absent anything useful from Microsoft it will be necessary to try using other software.  Time to try Acronis!  I guess.
