RGB swatches in CMYK document

hi all
here's a conondrum:
I am working on a document that I have set up in CMYK but, after placing an image from the web which must have been an RGB and using eyedropper to copy a colour from it, all the swatches and colours turned to RGB. Even the bits I created before placing the image and using eyedropper... and the colour scheme of the entire doc still is CMYK.
The document is intended for print, I therefore need to change it back somehow. How do I do that please?

Keep the document in color mode CMYK.
Open the RGB image in photoshop, and convert to CMYK.
Sample in Photoshop the color you need and write that down.
Go to Illustrator and create a swatch with the color you wrote down.
You cannot accurately sample colors from placed photos in Illustrator . Illustrator takes what is sent to the screen in RGB, and then converts that to your color mode. Do NOT use SHIFT eyedropper, though the color looks good your color will not match the CMYK values in your photo.
Illustrator will not change your cmyk document color mode colors to RGB because you sampled with eyedropper. You most likely changed the mode of the color panel to RGB. The color panel should always match the color mode of your document, the panel is misleading otherwise.

  • Exchange RGB swatches with CMYK swatches

    Using ASE color swatches I am trying to figure out how to change the swatches in an existing document. Here is the scenario:
    We have created 2 custom ASE swatch panels, one Spot RGB and the other Spot CMYK. Both panels have the colors named the same. When I open an existing document that uses the CMYK swatches and try to load the RGB swatches using the Load Swatches pull down in the Swatches panel, InDesign will only update the unused colors. And it will not load the other RGB colors as copies. I have tried to start with the ASE RGB swatches pre-loaded into InDesign, but when I open the document, all those colors are replaced with the swatches used in the CMYK document. So, I cannot delete the swatch and replace it with the copy. Does anyone know how I can get around this problem? We want to be able to use different colors for web and print and we want to have a way to be consistent across documents and Adobe applications.

  • [JS CS3] Can't add a swatch to some documents

    Hello,
    I have the following script:
    var myDoc = app.activeDocument;
    colorIt(myDoc, "lime",cmykRatios =[40,0,80,0]);
    function colorIt(docRef,colorName,cmykRatios){
        docRef.colors.add({colorValue:cmykRatios, colorModel:ColorModel.process, colorSpace:ColorSpace.cmyk,name:colorName});
        }//end colorIt
    For some documents this script works as it should. But for others I get the error message in ESTK "An incorrect number of color values was given."
    The error message is telling me that I cannot add CMYK swatches. If I change the colorSpace to ColorSpace.rgb and have only three values in the array cmykRatios, then the script works in the document that before would not accept it.
    But then trying to add an RGB swatch to the documents that previously accepted the new CMYK swatch gives me the very same error message:  "An incorrect number of color values was given."
    Obviously there is some difference between these documents but I cannot see one. Why would one ID file accept CMYK colors but not RGB colors and vice versa? Any clues as to what might be wrong here?
    Thanks,
    Tom

    Hey Tom!
    I just tested your script, and it's working fine on new documents. Then, I created swatch with same name but in RGB space, and received same error. Are you sure that you don't have swatch with same name already in document? But, on the other side, why would it work after you change script to RGB. I added one row into your script, so you can test it.
    var myDoc = app.activeDocument;
    colorIt(myDoc, "lime",cmykRatios =[40,0,80,0]);
    function colorIt(docRef,colorName,cmykRatios){
        if(app.activeDocument.swatches.itemByName(colorName).isValid != true){
            docRef.colors.add({colorValue:cmykRatios, colorModel:ColorModel.process, colorSpace:ColorSpace.cmyk,name:colorName});

  • Saving swatches for CMYK while mixing it in RGB?

    My document is in RGB mode and I mixed the colors with the RGB sliders, though I am still able to save this swatch for CMYK in the new swatch dialogue window. What is this actually doing to the color?
    Thanks.

    What is this actually doing to the color?
    It's using the current default color profiles to convert those values. This may work for some colors, but you shouldn't let yourself be fooled. If you plan on using any of those swatches in a CMYK document and then do a calibrated proof/ preflight, you sure will get some warnings about insufficient ink densities or out of gamut colors or as a minor, it will not look like anything you expected it to... It's just the nature of the thing.

  • Color shift when pasting from CMYK document to RGB document

    Hello,
    We're creating an image for a client that will eventually be printed 4c process, and we have to use some very specific CMYK values. However, since we need to use certain layer effects, we need to work in RGB. I assumed that since the CMYK values we use are within the RGB gamut, there would be no color shift when copying from a CMYK doc and pasting into an RGB doc, but I'm apprently mistaken.
    I'm not very familiar with color management, since we don't do any heavy duty color work in house, so this is likely a very rudimentary question: how do I keep colors from shifting when pasting from a CMYK document into an RGB document (which will eventually be converted back to CMYK for print)?
    Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    you have two possible issues at work that would explain a change
    "out of gamut" color between color modes (the RGB colors don't translate well to CMYK)
    you are discarding profile information information when pasting (and not Converting to the destination)...

  • Save For Web transparency problem: Overprint & CMYK documents

    OK, I had a weird problem crop up today (as far as I can tell) completely out of the blue.
    When I am working in overprint preview mode in a CMYK document, and I attempt to save an artboard as a PNG w/ transparency (via Save for Web), illustrator forces a white background throughout the image. It didn't do this until this morning. Yesterday, it was working perfectly normally. I put the computer to sleep at the end of the day, woke it up this morning, and for some reason this behavior has changed.
    It does not do this if the document is in RGB mode, or I have the transparency grid shown, or not in overprint preview mode. (I work in this mode because for some reason having it in standard preview shows very strange artifacts when working with raster effects, which drives me crazy)
    I'm on a Mid 2014 MBP Retina, 2.5 GHz Intel Core i7, 16GB 1600MHz DDR3 w/ NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2048MB, running illustrator CC 2014.1.1.
    I have tried uninstalling, reinstalling, restarting the computer, resetting all settings, as well as changing document settings, and editing artboard settings. And yes, the transparency checkbox is checked in the Save For Web dialog.
    Any ideas?

    brnscreative,
    Have you tried 4) and 6) on the list?
    4) is more thorough than 3), and 6) is the full reinstallation.
    The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file, and when it is not caused by issues with opening a file from external media. You may have tried/done some of them already; 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
    If possible/applicable, you should save current artwork first, of course.
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to at least 5 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible), for CS3 - CC you may find the folder here:
    https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/kb/preference-file-location-illustrator.html
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall (ticking the box to delete the preferences), run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

  • CS2 Convert RGB Images to CMYK Within Illustrator

    Hey everyone. I desparately need some help here. I designed a file in Illustator CS2 and my file had images within it. I took it to a professional printer and he said my images needed to be converted from RGB to CMYK to print properly. The printer had CS4 and he said to change the colours you click on Edit -> then Colours, which in turn allowed him to change the pictures format from RGB to CMYK. I only have CS2 and when he told me to select Edit and then Colours, well CS2 does not have that. It's something completely different.
    If someone out there knows how to change the picture files from RGB to CMYK "within" Illustrator CS2 could you please tell me how as Adobe's phone support only deals with the most current version.
    Any help you can provide me with, would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks in advance,
    Julie

    >This is for my benefit as I have just purchased a colour laser printer and wanted to be able to print something proper like the professional printer.
    Unless you have a PostScript RIP for your laser printer (a separate driver provided either by your printer manufacturer or a third party) you cannot proof CMYK documents directly. Lacking a PostScript RIP, you can still get a pretty good idea if you have Acrobat. Print to PDF using settings that convert to, say, sRGB... then, print that PDF document on your laser printer (using its native non-PostScript driver).
    For your older documents, if your placed RGB images are embedded (rather than linked), you can try Philip's suggestion. It shouldn't matter, though. Illustrator should do the necessary space conversions at print-time.
    If the images are linked, I would suggest you convert them to CMYK in Photoshop. I'm sorry, but I do not know of a way to do the same thing within Illustrator (v12 aka CS2).

  • Exclamation Icon when starting a new CMYK document in cs5??

    When I start a new CMYK document in Illustrator CS 5  I'm getting the yellow exclamation mark to the right which you can see in the picture I attached.  When I choose RGB there is no exclamation!  What is causing this, and how can I fix it, or is it normal?  Thanks!

    Nothing wrong here. It merely tells you that there is no matching document template and that you have modified your settings. It looks a bit awkward, but nothing to worry.

  • Why do Pantone colours look different in different CMYK documents? There's a colours setting or option I'm missing somewhere and I can't figure it out.

    One thing I noticed is that the Pantone swatches added before I discovered this problem were added as 'spot color', whereas now they are added as 'book color'. I'm not sure what this means, or if it's relevant..

  • RGB conversion to CMYK InDesign CS4 js

    Hi,
    When we export InDesign into pdf through a script we assign to it a specific color profile. And at first it was converting all RGB files to CMYK as well. Then after one of the crashes my InDesign stopped to convert them. Is there a way to fix that? And maybe I need to give to you more specific information. Please let me know.
    Your help is highly appreciated.

  • Is there as easy way of batch converting RGB files to CMYK in OS Lion?

    Is there as easy way of batch converting RGB files to CMYK in OS Lion?
    I was using a photoshop droplet on my desktop but this no longer works due to the fact it requires rosetta support.

    From another forum after googling:
    Your computer came with everything you need, because ColorSync can do that and Apple provided AppleScripts for it. Go to your Applications folder and look for the AppleScript folder. Double click on the 'Example Scripts' alias and then open the ColorSync scripts. Drag and drop your images on the the 'Match to CMYK' script.
    You can open AppleScript Editor from Launchpad (it's in Utilities). Go to Help to Open Example Scripts Folder. In the ColorSync folder is a Match application. Double click to make it run.
    Now you know what it does you may need to change it for batch conversion.
    Go to AppleScript Editor and open what you've just found. And I'm sorry that's as far as my knowledge goes, hope some one can fill in the gaps.
    Or you may just want to look at something like Graphic Converter?

  • How to batch convert RGB images to CMYK

    Hello,
    Can anyone explain in a step-by-step way how to batch-convert many RGB images to CMYK?
    Thanks in advance

    If you do want to use Photoshop for the bact conversion there are a few ways, including Batch and Image Procesor under the File>Automate or File>Scripts of PS.
    However, my preference is to use Russell Brown's script: Image Processsor Pro, via Bridge:
    http://www.russellbrown.com/scripts.html
    As similar one is Picture Processor:
    http://www.scriptsrus.talktalk.net/
    Both allow you to do multiple conversions simultaneously, to different sizes and file types, and running actions before or after the conversions.

  • Acrobat 8 - Settings to convert RGB colours to CMYK

    Hi,
    I create A1 & A0 size maps as adobe pdfs. The mapping software I use will only allow me to select R G B colours which is fine and produces the maps with the exact colours I want. However, when I want to print my pdf maps the large format printers I have access to always want to convert my RGB colours to CMYK which makes the colours dull on the printed map compared to the pdf. Are there any settings that I can alter in Acrobat 8 which will convert the RGB colours to CMYK during the pdf creation process. I will then be able to alter my RGB colours if necessary to get the right end result. I am not super technical so if there is a reasonably simple solution that would be great.
    Thank you for any help you may be able to give.

    I think you will have to copy the watermarks and such to the corresponding folders in AAXI. I do not think that they will migrate in the way that you are thinking. It may take a bit of time to find the appropriate folders and files, but this is likely how I would try it. I was not concerned about it myself and did not try to copy such things.

    How are you creating the transparent areas? Are you using an
    alpha
    channel in the bitmap? I stopped doing that when I noticed
    color
    shifting (even in grayscale reproduction) similar to what you
    get when
    using the raster effects. But I do miss using it because it
    is
    convenient and sets up nicely.
