RoboHelp 8 freezes when compiling WebHelp

I'm working with a project in RoboHelp 8. The project was created in RH5, but has been updated and run successfully on RH8. The project is about 35 MB.
I am able to open the project and edit topics. But when I try to compile the help RoboHelp freezes, and I have to use Windows Task Manager to close RoboHelp.
I have tried to rename the CPD and use the existing XPJ to open the project, but that didn't work. I also tried to use the HHP file to open it, but I keep getting a message that the CPD is corrupt and that the project can't be opened.

Are you absolutely sure you imported source files into the project rather than output files? The clue will be a red square near the beginning of the topics.
I don't think memory is the issue. I have one machine with a similar spec and that is running Windows 7 and RoboHelp quite happily. More likely is those topics.
First though, I don't think we have tried opening the supplied sample projects. Try that and make some edits. I want to prove the problem is this project. If they work OK, then it does point to the project.
No matter what you do it seems when you open a project, you can edit quite happily until you try compiling. Are you saving as you go? If you edit, save and close, then reopen, is everything OK until you then try to compile.
How big is this project? My inclination if it is not too big would be to create a new project and import a batch of files at a time, edit and compile. When it falls over, you know where the rogue file(s) are. If it is large, make a copy and trash half the topics. If it then works, you picked the wrong half, so make another copy and trash the other half, then split that. Keep doing that until you have the problem files in a small project. Or maybe you already know what the problem files are.
I would put the content of those into a text editor, then paste that into a new topic, reformat as required. That way you don't import the problem content.

  • Why does RoboHelp 8 crash when compiling merged HTML help after deleting a child project in TOC

Why does RoboHelp 8 crash when compiling merged HTML help after deleting a child project in TOC? I would be grateful for any assistance.
    Here's the situation:
-- I recently upgraded from RoboHelp X5 to RoboHelp 8. I upgraded my projects to RoboHelp 8 projects.
-- One large help system I manage is built such that there is one master project and about 25 child projects. Each of these is its own item in the master project TOC.
-- In RoboHelp X5 I never had any trouble deleting these.
-- However now in RoboHelp 8, whenever I delete one (by opening TOC pod, right-clicking on item in question, and clicking Delete), and proceed to "Generate Primary Layout" (MS HTML Help), the generation/compilation process proceeds as far as "Generating full-text search data" and then the whole program crashes!
Am I doing something wrong? Is there a bug in the software? I have installed patches 8.0.1 and 8.0.2.
Once again, I thank you in advance for any pointers.

  • RoboHelp 8 Freezes When Trying to Use Any Open Dialog

The title pretty well says it all. RoboHelp freezes when I try to use Open... from the Starter screen or File>Open or any other control that accesses the open dialog (i.e., the open/explore button on the Content Settings tab in the FrameMaker Document Settings dialog). I have to end the process in the Task Manager and restart RoboHelp. (Fortunately, the Recent Projects links work – except for Open..., of course.)
I discovered this when I had to restore links to moved FrameMaker documents. My installation is TCS2 running on Windows 7 32-bit; all updates to all TCS2 components and Windows 7 have been installed.
I tried an in-place reinstall of RoboHelp, but that didn't make any difference.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    John

Hi John and welcome to the RH community.
I'd check that you have both of the 8.0.1 and 8.0.2 updates installed. Also ensure your RH source files are not located on a network drive. Bare in mind that whilst some users manage to run RH under Windows 7, others have reported problems. You should also note that Windows 7 is not an officially supported platform for RH usage.

  • "Synchronize TOC" disabled when compiling WebHelp

When I compile WebHelp for a particular project, the
"Synchronize TOC" option (and some others) are disabled. I can't
figure out how this project is different from our other projects,
so I don't know what to fix. Does anyone know why Synchronize TOC
    might be disabled?
    Tks. Eileen

    Hi Eileen.
Do you have the "Contents" toolbar button selected above the
"Synchronize TOC" option. If you don't, this option is greyed
    out.

  • RoboHelp 10 crashes when generating WebHelp

I have a new laptop, and have installed TechCommunicationSuite_4_WWEFDJ, which includes RH10. I mapped RH to source control (Team Foundation Server MSSCCI Provider), and have successfully been able to check-in/check-out files.
When I generate WebHelp, below is what displays in the Output View, and then I get an error prompt that RH is not working and to close it, find an online solution, etc.
I must be missing a dll or something in my new laptop. Everything was working fine on the old one. Does anyone know how to resolve this?
    Output View
    Starting compilation...
    WebHelp preprocessor 10.0.0.287
    Clearing output folder...
Compiling C:\FuelsManager Help\Web Application\Cirrus\index.htm...  note: the output folder is local only; not mapped to source control
    Preparing to create WebHelp...
    Preparing files for WebHelp...

I think you are in a real nightmare situation.
There are various ways of reverse engineering but as covered above, you have multiple outputs so you would end up with multiple sources instead of one single source for all the outputs.
I'm thinking though that with the mess you currently have, it might be preferable to create six source projects as a start point. Then you can manually compare Topic A in each source and copy / paste until you have one source that can generate all. You could use some file comparison tools on the content or create a Word document from each and then use Word's Compare tool.
You are 100% sure there are no true source files in source control?

  • Robohelp 7 freezes when trying to insert an image

Not sure how this happened, but now I can't insert images
into my RoboHelp 7 project. Now when I attempt to go to Insert >
Image and then click the folder to browse for an image to insert,
Robohelp freezes until I hit the escape button. This is surely a
    bug. I'm on Windows XP.
As a workaround, I have to drag the images into the project
folder manually and then select them from the list or type their
    names in the field.

It sounds like the Insert Image dialog box has somehow fallen off the edge of your screen (Esc is closing the dialog box, returning focus to the main RoboHelp window). Try this:
    1. Press Alt, Spacebar, M
    2. Press any arrow key.
    3. Waggle the mouse madly until the dialog box appears on your screen.
    4. Click to drop the screen where you want it.

  • RoboHelp 8 freezes when I try to open my .xpj

I double-click my .xpj file and RH starts, sometimes it freezes with only the splash screen visible, sometimes it displays the pods but when I click on one RH freezes. I've tried deleting the .cpd and restarting, but get the same result. I am hosed at this point and desperate for help. Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

Glad you found the solution. You were able to amend your XPJ file which is better than deleting it. Sometimes just deleting it will fix things but that way you can lose other vital information. If ever you have to resort to that extreme, some fixes are on my site under Opening Projects.

  • Robohelp 7 Freezes When Trying to Import Anything

When I try to import anything into RoboHelp 7, it freezes. I
go to File > Import and select any option. The result is that
the entire application freezes until I click Escape.
The only thing I've been trying to import is Captivate
movies. The obvious workaround is to initiate movies from within
RoboHelp, which I've been doing. Still, I would like it if I could
    import things ...
I'm on XP and haven't done anything usual.

I found out what the problem was. I configured dual monitor
display for my laptop (so I could drag items between my laptop
monitor and a desktop monitor). In dual monitor mode, the Import
dialog box appears on the second monitor (because at some point, I
    imagine I dragged it there).
When I switched back to single monitor mode, RoboHelp still
thought I was in dual monitor mode and it put the dialog box on the
other (blank or nonexistent) screen. Hence when I tried to import
something, it seemed to freeze because it wouldn't let me push any
other buttons until I made a selection on the dialog box I couldn't
    access.
Here's the fix: Set up dual monitor mode again with two
monitors. In RoboHelp, go to File > Import to prompt the dialog
box. Drag the dialog back onto the same monitor as the application.
Now switch back to single monitor mode and go to File > Import
again. The application should remember to put the dialog box in the
correct place, and it no longer freezes.

  • RoboHelp/RoboPDF freezes when trying to generate PDF printed documentation

    Hi,
I am using RoboHelp HTML X5.0.2 build 801 with Win2k and Word
2000. Whenever I try to generate printed documentation in PDF
format RoboHelp freezes and doesn't respond until I kill the
program. I also tried first generating the printed documentation in
MS Word .doc format and then tried to generate the PDF from within
Word. RoboPDF kicks in this time and freezes along with MS Word.
Any ideas why this is happening?

It works on anything we throw at it. You could try the
    supplied sample projects.
Have you tried creating a document directly in Word and
    creating a PDF from that?
Where is you normal template stored? Locally?
Take a look at Snippet 33 on my site. You should be getting
an error message if that is the problem but it might be worth
    checking the path anyway.
    Click
    here.
If that does not fix it, email me offline.

  • RoboHelp HTML freezes when importing topic

Ok, I have never had a problem with Robohelp before, so I am
a bit confused. I start a new project, and import my first word
doc. The word doc imports, but the application freezes up and the
only thing I can do is kill the application through task manager. I
re-open the project and it freezes again. What am I doing
    wrong?

Is the problem with the word document. Create a new project
and import a different word file. If that works you know the
problem is with your word doc. Then cut/paste half the content into
another Word document and import that. Continue until you have the
application freeze. This should allow you to home in on what is
    causing the problem.

  • Robohelp v9 crashes when generating Webhelp from linked FM book

    Hello Robohelp mavens!
    My environment:  Win7, FM v10, Robohelp v9. (TCS v3)
I've linked an FM book (containing 90 files) to a blank Robohelp project. Whenever I try to generate Webhelp, Robohelp crashes at some point.
As part of debugging, I clean the FM book (removed unused Pgf/char formats, conditions, etc.). That did not help.
Any idea why Robohelp gives up in the middle?
    Any input is highly appreciated!
    My best regards,
    Roman

Do you get any kind of error message in the output pod? Does it always crash on a specific file?
Does it work if you remove half of the files from the book? A quarter? Etc.?

  • Compile Webhelp from Command Line

I downloaded the trial version of RoboHelp 7 and had some
issues running in trial mode on my Vista machine. After much
frustration, I gave up and got it to work on my XP machine. The
main reason why the developers want me to upgrade to RoboHelp 7 is
for the compile via command line feature enhancement. I have been
    tasked to test it out.
Well, I could not find any instructions in the online help
nor on the Adobe website on what to key in the command line when
compiling Webhelp. So I need some assistance. Can anyone provide
    this information?
Also, I have conditional tags applied to the project. Do you
have to add any additional code to the command line?

    Welcome to the forum.
Go to Tools | Options and select the Use Offline Help option.
Then search again on command line.

  • IE8 javascript error when accessing webhelp

    Hi All,
I'm currently using RoboHelp 7, and when the webhelp is accessed using Internet Explorer 8, the attached error message displays. This issue doesn't occur in IE7 or Firefox. Has anyone heard of this issue?
    Thanks

    Hi,
As it seems that this error is triggerd by a custom javascript (modal.js on line 94), you may want to evaluate your script. The following links may be helpfull:

  • RoboHelp10 freezes when open or create a project

RoboHelp10 freezes when open or create a project.  I have been working around this, but can no longer do that.
I need to rename one topic within a project and cannot do that because of it freezing.
I uninstalled and re-installed RoboHelp 10 this morning and it didn't make any difference.
I'm using RoboHelp HTML on a Windows 7 OS.
    Thanks,
    Diane

It is local.  No source control involved.
I was trying to create a project. RoboHelp also freezes when I use the
"Open" folder on the RoboHelp startup page or File > Open.  It does not
freeze if I open a project by clicking on one of the recent projects that I
have used on the startup page.
    Thanks for your help.
