RSS Feed/Podcast image

I think I may have goofed when I originally published my website on iWeb. I'm really hoping someone can help. I started a blog, but I think when I first designed the site, I deleted the original media place holder where the RSS feed draws the image for the feed, and also for a podcast. When I submitted to iTunes, it is blank, even though album art is embedded in the file.
I figured this out by trying a new website to mobile me, and I noticed that the originally image place holder that comes up with a blog template is where the RSS feed draws the image.
Is there any way to get this back, or to redo my the front page of my blog without losing all my archives when I republish?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Jason

I had the same problem. It was a while ago, but I think I ultimately went into the RSS file and found the tag I needed, which was <itunes:image> and I manually edited it. I've hunted around and apparently this is the correct way to write it:
<itunes:image href="http://www.yourimageaddress.jpg" />
You should upload your image, which should be 600 x 600 pixels to a storage place like imageshack.us and copy the direct URL. Or upload it to your own website. Then insert the URL into the RSS code as above. Then you need to republish the RSS feed. It takes a couple of days, but it should show up.
Here is some info from the Apple website:
This tag specifies the artwork for your podcast. Put the URL to the image in the href attribute. iTunes prefers square .jpg images that are at least 600 x 600 pixels, which is different than what is specified for the standard RSS image tag.
iTunes supports images in JPEG and PNG formats. The URL must end in ".jpg" or ".png". If the itunes:image tag is not present, iTunes will use the contents of the RSS image tag.
If you change your podcast’s image, also change the file’s name. iTunes may not change the image if it checks your feed and the image URL is the same.
Spend some time developing an attractive, original image that represents your podcast well. Potential subscribers will see it on your podcast’s page and a much smaller version of the image in search results and feature placements. Make sure your design is effective in both sizes.
The itunes:image tag is not supported at the item level. It is possible to include art within individual episodes, but the art is included within the media file’s metadata, not in the RSS feed. To add artwork to an episode using iTunes, highlight the episode and select "Get Info" from the "File" menu. Click the Artwork tab. Then click "Add," navigate to and select an image file, and click "Choose."

• Computer storage for rss feed / podcast?

Can you use your computer storage say a external hard drive as your podcast storage? Instead of using a website?
If so, how do you get a RSS feed to make it all come together?
Basically you use your computer as the storage & host.

It is technically posssible to do this by setting your computer up as a web server. However I don't recommend this. Firstly, it's quite a technical process on which I can't advise (and as you have Windows you won't get advice on it in these forums).
Secondly your computer has to be running all the time. Thirdly you must have a permanent IP number - many ISPs change it from time to time precisely to prevent you from doing this because of bandwidth considerations, or charge extra for it.
Thirdly most ISPs provide a much lower upload speed than download speed, which could make your episodes very slow to load.
Fourthly this could consume considerable bandwidth and if you have any sort of cap on it you could hit it quite quicky.
And finally your ISP may very well not allow this, so you need to check with them as if they don't you are likely to be disconnected in short order.

• Metadata on iPod from RSS feed (podcast) - ID3 tags or XML-generated?

Hi,
Does the metadata on an iPod come from the ID3 tags or from the XML-generated content in the RSS feed?
Thanks!

Afterthought:
My experience is generally with tweaking tags to get iTunes to merge feeds but if you are downloading podcasts directly to the iPod it may concentrate on the feed information. Short of running tests with deliberately different information in the feed & the tag it is hard to say.

For you developers out there - an option for you is to download my
RSS Reader web part for free and edit the code. You can set the credentials of the WebRequest to something other than default credentials.
Search for this line of code: xmlReq.Credentials = CredentialCache.DefaultCredentials;
I wrote this web part as an alternative to the RSS Viewer Web Part because not everbody has MOSS. Plus, it is open source so you can customize the look and feel, and it's behavior.

• How can I prevent firefox from autodetecting RSS feed, podcasts, etc.?

Whenever I visit the forum at www.vlexoforums.com, and click on a topic, firefox asks me to choose the way I would like to receive updates to the forum. It asks me to choose from google reader, microsoft outlook, preview in firefox, add live bookmarks in firefox, etc. This did not use to happen earlier. Recently I updated firefox and after that this started happening.
== I updated firefox to 3.5.10.

"Add-ons" is a mis-leading term, regarding what appears in the Add-ons Manager tab. "Addons" includes Extensions, Search Engines, Themes (Appearance), User Scripts, Styles, and Services - all of which the "Updates" can be controlled by Firefox preferences. "Plugins" are shown in the AOM too, but unlike the others, Firefox has no control over updates for Plugins. As James mentioned, Plugins aren't installed within Firefox as the other categories of "Add-Ons" are - and updates are controlled by the application that installed the Plugin that Firefox uses from each application's own set of folders or wherever in Windows files the Plugin is placed by the installer.
IMO, the biggest problem with Flash is that it is set by default to only look for an update once a month. So when Adobe updates Flash multiple times a month (3 "updates" in January alone) the Flash updater can'r catch each update as it occurs, or even within an acceptable "window of time". A user might "fall behind" as many as 3 new version releases quite easily.
As far as clicking to "Allow" each video when you're behind a version or two with Flash, at least Mozilla does a "soft block" and permits you to "Allow" - a "hard block" would make it impossible to use Flash at all. And "yes". Mozilla ''can do" a "hard block" when necessary.
In conclusion, Flash is a dying technology, which deserves to be buried. It is too "exploitable" by the "bad guys". All the recent "updates" are for security patches for fixing "holes" in Flash and stability fixes to an old application that "has seen better days" (like 10 years ago).
HTML5 Video looks like the future. Use it where you can, like at YouTube which gives you a choice for many videos they host - but you you need to enable that feature in Google preferences or all you're liable got get is Flash videos. With other websites, their users need to tell them that they want HTML5 videos only.

• RSS feed with thumbnails

I'm creating a website where I have a classifieds section with featured ads which I can generate an RSS feed with images for.
I am looking for a way to set up an rss reader on my dreamweaver homepage which would scroll through the featured ads, which is easy enough to do with the title and description, but I would also like to include the thumbnails.
I just thought about it because of NetVibes, here's an example on the top left:
http://www.netvibes.com/yelkezin#Noticias_gerais
This google ajax API is perfect if I can figure out how to diplay the thumbnails.
http://code.google.com/apis/ajax/playground/?exp=feeds#dynamic_feed_control_-_vertical
Does anybody know the code to be able to do this? Or information on how to do this?
I've been looking all over but haven't found anything concrete that I understand (I am not a programming expert, just a designer looking to spice up my site) Any tiny bit of information or help will be greatly appreciated.

If you go to this site you will find the google code there.

Sorry you have already done that, so just edit the code to point to your website, (this is where it says title and url).

• How can I add the logo image for a single item in an RSS feed?

Hello,
I am an administrator of iTunes U at the University of Minnesota.
Before transitioning new public site, we are trying to figure out how to put a logo image into RSS feeds.
We use our server to makes xml codes to create RSS feeds for podcasts.
We successfully put a logo image for a collection in a RSS feed, but putting a logo image for a single item did not work.
Below is the part of the xml code for the logo image for a single item, which is created by our server. I deleted other parts of xml code for your convenience.

Haven't created too many podcasts, but in this one
http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/connecticut-college-sculpture/id372414245
or
itpc://video.conncoll.edu/d/sculptures/index.xml
before we included the audio files, we added the images in iTunes.
Select the file, then go to File>Get Info, here you can add metadata, and in Artwork add an image.
Then upload this file to your server. Works for audio files anyways.
You don't see the image in the web podcast, but you do in iTunes after you download each item, in "Show item artwork" in lower left. Click on the image and it zooms out.

• We have a new Wordpress site, how do I add a description and artwork to the RSS feed of the podcast?

Hello:
I am surprised I could not find this on a search of Google or Apple Support.
Our church has a new website created with Wordpress. We have all of the functionality ready to go in order to have the RSS feed work with the itunes store.
However, when we submit the feed to iTunes, it says that we need to add a graphic, as well as a short and a long description. I believe this used to be a part of the iTunes website submission process, however it apparently now needs to be a part of the feed itself, if I am understanding correctly.
So my question is where can I find instructions on how to add this in Wordpress?
Just so you understand, I am not in charge of the site itself... I am basically doing some research on my own to help out our programmer. I am just in charge of uploading the weekly audio.
If anyone could guide me in the right direction, it would be very much appreciated.
Randy

Wordpress can construct a proper podcast feed, including the 'itunes:image, 'itunes:summary' and 'itunes:subtitle' tags; there will be places to enter this data but I'm afraid I can'd advise on WordPress. It does seem to have a steep learning curve as we see more problems with Wordpress podcasts than any other creation method.
Unless someone who happens to have got a WordPress podcast working happens to see your question and offer information I can only suggest that you look for a Wordpress forum or some Help on it.
Although it won't help you with Wordpress you might like to look at this page about podcasting basics: it includes a sample basic feed so that you can at least see what one should look like:

• How to get poster art in the RSS feed using Podcast Producer workflow

With podcast producer there are standard workflow which create atom feeds. I can not figure out how to automatically generate a poster image (or any type of images) associated with the video to show in the rss feed. Anyone got this to work?
Here is the feed of the test site:
feed://switch.macsenior.net:8171/podcastproducer/atom_feeds/4C9A6B5A-4D09-4394-A 846-5407C8BF8FBD
I like to show poster art of an random frame of the movie.

You actually are publishing images. For example:
http://switch.macsenior.net:8171/podcastproducer/feed_logos/4C9A6B5A-4D09-4394-A 846-5407C8BF8FBD.png
http://switch.macsenior.net:8171/podcastproducer/attachments/4C9A6B5A-4D09-4394- A846-5407C8BF8FBD/2EFF4653-5E35-4F9F-B0D1-14C797DAB1C8.png
You aren't seeing these images because of the way Safari parses feeds. Try using curl from the command line or another browser. Safari and Podcast Producer really don't play well together. A good example is trying to use the SSL port to view feeds.
If you'd like to change the image to something common for all episodes in a workflow, select Window > Workflow Inspector in Podcast Composer. Be careful with your image dimensions, as it is posted unaltered.

Please always post the URLs of the Store page and the feed when you have a question. For reference, your feed is at
http://www.japanesebaseball.com/services/jbw-podcasts.jsp
and the Store page is at

Looking at the Store page, the image appears there perfectly well. On subscribing there is no image associated with the episodes because you haven't embedded an image in the files - please see this page for clarification:

• I Tunes U - Possible to edit RSS feed produced by podcast producer?

Hi people. Two questions
I have a self hosted i tunes u on mac server. Is it possible to edit rss feeds once they have been published by podcast producer? eg remove particular tracks from a particular feed or rename as track for instance?
Also when i tunes u is actually accessed through the interface no track time information is visible for any of of the podcasts? is this a common problem? and does anyone know how to solve it?
Thanks

Your 'tunes:summary' in the top section of the feed has several instances of the string
<br/>
You should remove these. You cannot have < or > within a tag and the code won't do either.
The URL in the 'itunes:image' tag includes an aompersand ('&') and this can cause trouble. You should change it to the wrod 'and' in the filename and in the feed (or call it something simpler, no-one sees the filename).
Your 'itunes:summary' and 'itunes:subtitle' tags for the episode have various codes in them - all starting &# something - iTunes will display these codes, not render them, and you should not use them. These tags should contain plain text, no html. This won't render the feed unreadable the way the other errors do, but it looks messy.

• Not Seeing the RSS Feed in Podcast in any iPhone or apple product

Hi,
I'm currently developing a podcast type site in Wordpress and one of the functions they want is the ability to pull an RSS feed of their posts with podcasts into the Podcast app.
I'm using feedburner and have it configured for podcasts and when I try to add the feed manually to Podcast on an iPhone 4 running ios 7 it adds it but it says there are 0 episodes. (on a side note when I try to add it to iTunes I get the same problem) and I get the same problem on an iPhone 5 running ios7.
I suspect there is something about the feed that apple products don't like but since I'm using feedburner and it should be adjust the feed accordingly I'm not sure where the issue is. The feedburner URL is: http://feeds.feedburner.com/timbuild1/IYPr
if anyone can shed any light it would be greatly appreciated, I've searched for hours and read tons of posts, forum posts and articles but I can't find any answers.
thanks

hehe if somebody knows something this is def you Roger about first thing with seeing pic in itunes i think that i read all possible posts on web in last 7 days and nights and this is not working on my pc with control-click (Windows) but i don't care ! i wait for apple do magic bug fixing on new itunes version. And now about main problem. iOS devices are capable displaying chapter images because this is working right now with some podcast on my phone, i give you pic example iphone 4 iOS 6.1.2
in first pic you can see streaming podcast and chapters (little white dots on bar),second picture is first song with cover of single playing, and if you look close right from the clock zzz simbol is chapter logo, if you press it you will be see pic no.3 so this def working but working when you mad your podcast on mac with garage band ! that's why i write about format ids, tags etc

http://i.imgur.com/g4P5iM1.png
http://i.imgur.com/zDOIwrC.png
i test your podcast episode 36 then episode 33 and 31 ! bad news my friend no chapters and no pictures only one main pic. but when i test your podcast in downcast app in my iphone wooo i see text i see your pic i see chapters i see everything. so that mean it's working everywhere like mine except iphone and ipad app and now we come to theory of garage band things tags in m4a files. you write that you have done all this in podcast maker not garage band. This is now real mistery to me !
i analyze your file here and you have in last section menu1 and menu 2 so maybe problem is somwhere around this, not in format id because you have ok format id like one that working ok

• How Can I delete an RSS Feed in iTunes/podcasts?

I have an old rss feed that I want deleted in itunes. I have created a new rss feed and it's up and working great. I want the old one deleted.
I have used "Report a Concern" and asked itunes to delete the old feed, but nothing has happened. so I went to the files and renamed them all and re-pinged the page so itunes would realize that the feed no longer works, but that hasn't work either. I've searched the forum but can't seem to find out how to have itunes delete the old podcast feed.
Any ideas?
I realize that I should have done this a different way, but I didn't know that then... I do now.

Just to confirm that you originally had a podcast accepted in the iTunes Store, and now you have had a second version accepted with a different Store URL? The procedure you have followed is the correct one, though I don't know how long it's likely to take the Store staff to get round to removing it. Just remove the original feed from the server: it will still show in the Store, which has cached it, but obviously subscribing won't work, and the absence of the feed may encourage the Store staff to remove the Store page.

• My podcast is no longer updating to the latest posts I have made to my rss feed. I have checked the itunes store and it hasn't updated there either. I checked my rss feed to see if I made a typo, but I haven't found any. Any ideas?

• I replaced a podcast episode on my rss feed but it won't delete in iTunes.

Hi. I recently started a podcast and we just became searchable in iTunes yesterday. After recording our second episode a few days ago, one of the podcast hosts finished editing and added the media file to our website and rss feed. I guess he never listened to it before doing so because there is a bad audio problem (one part is way louder than the others.) We have since fixed the audio problem and replaced the file on the post but when I listen to it on iTunes it is still playing the old episode with the audio problem.
I have deleted the entire post for episode 2 and currently episode 1 is the only one in the rss feed (as far as I know.)
It's still showing up on my computer's iTunes and iPhone podcast app. I cleared my iTunes cache and went into settings and deleted the podcast from the podcast app, I unsubscribed and resubscribed and episode 2 is still showing up.
Am I missing something? Is there a better way to clear the cache?
I had thought that subscribing would automatically link to what's happening in my feed but I can't seem to shake that old episode.
I am ready to make a new post with the fixed audio file but I would like to make sure that a.) The old one is gone so that two Episode 2s don't show and b.) that there isn't somewhere the messed up audio file is hiding.
Here is the link to my iTunes podcast feed:

Mr. Churchill - First, to answer your last questions:
Yes, the movie is fully downloaded, all 3.69 GBs.
No the Apple TV has 127.5 GBs of its 144.63 GBs free.
Second, I tried turning the Time Capsule WiFi rounter and Apple TV off (for at least two or three minutes, not the usual 10 seconds recommended) and I still could not move the movie.
Third, I severed the link and set it up again re-synced all 5,103 items back and still when I move the movies to the Apple TV box and Apply it, after 35 seconds it stops the sync and moves it back the the Rented Movies box.
Though I have set my Apple TV to sync with my MacBook Pro I cannot find a way to connect it to other than shared library, but not the "not shared library" (Is this what the Rented Movies are?). Is what Fletch is talking about int the "Rental Movies not showing up on Apple TV" discussion my problem and a solution?

there are three possibilities: you have not upgraded to version 2.0 or in Summary on the ATV device in iTunes, you should look whether you have it set up to only sync or otherwise disables movie syncing, or you have not paired your Mac to the ATV (on your tv, settings/computers/connect to itunes library - not shared library)
