S16 24fps - DVCPro HD 25 fps -   24 fps editing and output?

I'm new on this forum so "hi everybody!"
We're about to shoot a short feature on S16 film and I'm in charge of postproduction.
Last feature we made was shot on S16@24 fps -> HDCam SR telecine -> Betacam SP -> 24fps edit on Avid Film Composer -> EDL -> HDCam SR conformation, color grading and titling -> 35mm shoot.
The thing was, finding for free a HDcam SR deck and an Avid for conformation, color grading, titling etc... was really painful.
So now that we have less money than last time and that HD technologies evolved, I'm considering DVCPro HD instead of HDCam SR.
If the movie is good enough, we may get more money to go back to film on a 35mm print but nothing's sure right now. If the film isn't good enough, we'll stay in DVD/BluRay world.
The big question is "24 fps or 25 fps shooting?" (24 being the standard for film and BluRay/HD-DVD (ok, HD-DVDead) but can be an issue in my post production process)
I know for I can only make 25 fps DVCPro HD tapes in my Pal world (talking "1 film frame for 1 TC frame").
I know I can transfer 25 fps DV on FCP and edit everything at 24 fps with Cinema Tools.
But can I transfer 25 fps DVCPro HD to FCP with Cinema Tools (online editing), edit them at 24 fps and output a "BluRay quality" 24 fps video file? (for the 35mm shooting part I'm not affraid as I'll need TGA/Tiff frame sequences so one frame is one frame, there's no footage speed or anything involved)
I'll need a good 24 fps video file for the audio post part...
The goal is to stay in the digital domain after the telecine, and never use the original negative again (juste like we did for the last short feature we made). So no keycodes/flex or anything.
I know DVCPro HD is not as good as HDCam SR or even an original negative cut scan, but we won't have enough money for that and I was pretty impressed by the DVCPro HD->35mm footage I've seen so far.
Thanks
Marc

  • How should I combine 30 fps clips and 24 fps clips into a project?

I have both 30 fps footage and 24 fps footage and I would like to create a project that has both. Should I create a 30-fps project or a 24-fps project? Which one will look better?

A little bit. Mostly just playing around.
I would start with 30fps so you can preserve the higher frame rate.
Another consideration is how much of your content is 30fps and how much is 24fps.
If you're doing a lot of this kind of thing you may find the FinalCut Pro X handles it better.

  • How can I convert 30 fps edited footage to 29.97 in prem 6?

I have 11 minutes of footage that I want to be able to send to my dv camcorder and then burn the dvd but the problem is I edited all of the footage in a 30 fps timebase and when I open the project up in 29.97 premiere tells me that it will add gliches, etc. and sure enough it does and the audio levels are different. How can i fix this without having to re-edit all of my footage?

A free converter that will convert AVCHD to Premiere Elements compatible hi-def MPEG2 is the Free AVCHD Converter, available from:
    http://www.koyotesoft.com
According tp Paul Scrivener, you should up the bit rate to 25000kb/s and convert, and it will export 1920x1080 MPEG2.
One downside is that, when you install it, it automatically downloads a search tool to your browser toolbar -- but it can easily be removed using Add/Remove Programs.
For easy editing of AVCHD and even conversion to standard DV-AVI, a great buy is Corel VideoStudio Pro X2. This editor/converter sells for $59.99.

The frame rate shows in the Inspector. Conform in the retiming menu of the toolbar will let you change the frame rate.

  • Can You Edit And Export 60 fps Video With iMovie 10.0.5?

So the new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus let you shoot video at 60 fps, right?
Well, my question is, can iMovie 10.0.5 for the Mac let you actually edit and export this video, maintaining its 60 fps frame rate?

I posted what I found to this thread iMovie 11 10.14 Exporting a 60fps file to Maverick?
    Hope you find it helpful.

  • Slow FPS, graphics and choppy video when connected to a Mini-DVI cable to external monitor on Macbook Mid2007 4GB RAM

    Hi,
I have a Mid-2007 Macbook white. I have upgraded its memory to 4GB. Snow Leopard was working great, and I said to myself maybe it's time to upgrade to Lion.
After the upgrade all was well. However, a big problem occurs when I plug in to the Mini-DVI display port with the HDMI adapter, to connect to my Sony LCD HDTV. The whole graphics and video slow down, everything is choppy. Quicktime and VLC video playback is strobe and choppy looks like very low Frame Rate. Cannot watch anything, not HD nor low resolutions. The entire computer is slow when the cable is connected.
    Things I tried:
*VGA adapter seems to work fine - it's the digital display output that probably causes that.
*Running it through a new user.
This never happened on Snow Leopard. i'm considering to go back. However, I am wondering if there is a way to fix this minor problem.

    Update:
We solved the problem. Weird solution but now it seems to work. I plugged a VGA adpater and played with the screen rsolutions to try and watch a movie well on my LCD screen. I changed the screen resolutions but I couldn't revert back to the default settings. Pressing "Detect Displays" didn't do anything.
Here is the interesting part: When I placed back the DVI-HDMI adapter, suddenly everything worked fine!!! There was no choppy videos, no low fps, works prefect.
Something weird is going on here, but I'm happy I managed to get the DVI to HDMI to work because I was about to removie Lion and bring back Snow Leopard.

  • I want to show 25 fps artifact in 24 fps edit.

When I put a scene shot at 25 fps into an FCPX edit that has a 24 fps basis, there is a grayed-out, checked item in the "Rate Conform" effect box with Frame Sampling set to "Floor". And the final result is that the scene looks fine. No twitch on playback.
But in this case, I don't want fine. I want to see the 25 vs 24 artifact—the once-per-second twitch forward. But it seems that FCPX has its heart set on not showing that artifact.
I've attempted to Retime that clip to "Normal 100%" to see if that helped, but no dice.
How do I get it to fail?
Editing the same clip in iMovie DOES produce the twitch, but the overall image quality is lower.

I'll start you out with the most basic way to achieve this:
    1. Create a new title from the Final Cut Title in the project browser.
    2. Select the Text and go to the Inspector.
    4. At the right side of the Size parameter, click the down facing arrow and go to the Add Parameter Behavior option, then select Randomize from the parameter behaviors.
-When you select this, it should switch you to the behavior tab. The behavior is now applied to the text
    6. Set the apply to mode to "Add and Subtract"
    7. Set the amount to zero.
    8. Publish the Amount parameter.
    9. Save your project.
This is the most basic way to achieve what you have described.  Now whatever the font size, as you increase the Amount setting in FCPX, the text will randomly scale up/down  For example, if you have a font size of 24 and the amount is set to 10, the size will be randomized between 14 and 34.
Again, this is the most basic way to do it and from here there's plenty to play with if you want (Frequency, Noisiness, Smooth or Jumpy).  You can start to build rigs to control addtional features.  With that, I highly recomend you take the time to start reviewing the documentation and start looking at some online videos. For this case, I'd point you to the sections on Publishing, Rigging and Behaviors.

  • GTX 760 OC 2GB Fps drops and performance drops when reach 2GB

Hey after this problems with the GTX970, I decided to test my graphic card which I received from the RMA because the last one just gone, and when reach almost 2GB of ram used the performance drops a lot like in the 970, In games like Assetto Corsa I'm feeling this problem, sometimes I have drops from 60 fps to 20 fps ..
My model is the GTX 760 OC GAMING 2GB but the last which gone had the difference in the memory chip, using hynix memories instead of this new one which have Elpida.
    Any idea?

  • Do I need to use Flex Files for a 24 fps edit?

    Hello.
I am shooting on 16mm film, transferring to video (with key code burn in), editing on Final Cut 4, then matching back to film.
I would like to save money by not having to create Flex Files, and was told that if I do a reverse telecine in Cinema Tools (converting 29.97 transfer to 24), and then edit at 24 in FCP, I will be able to generate (manually) my own cut list when I am done by noting the key code burned at the head and tail frame of my shots. The Cinema Tools manual even implies it would be able to generate a cut list itself?
Can anyone speak to this or tell me why this plan wouldn't work--why I absolutely need a flex file? This will be a short film (under 10 minutes) and I will be capturing all the footage for the edit, so I don't need the flex file for help with capture, and I don't mind the time needed to log key codes myself for the cut list.
Thanks so much in advance for any help!

Hi. It costs enough to make a difference for my very, very small budget--a flat fee each time I transfer and I am shooting 100 foot rolls so there could be up to five or more transfers. Since I am capturing everything (entire camera rolls), I'm trying to understand if I need the flex files--if the key code is burned in, can't I use that for cut list? In other words, if I don't need the files for importing, what other reasons would you strongly advise me to have them made?

  • 10.1 Visualizer FPS Stinks, and Goes to Sleep?

The Frame rate is lousy on the iTunes 10.1 visualizer compared to 9. It appears to occur when the "cloud" effects kick in. Any way to tone the background cloud effects down so the rest of the effects look smooth?
Also, the computer no longer recognizes iTunes visualizer at full screen as an active application, so my computer goes to sleep at the time that is set in the energy saver as if iTunes was not even running. I can't seem to find a way to fix this within iTunes so the machine does not blank my screen. Any ideas?
    Thanks!

There's lots of people complaining about this on the message boards.
Try using your "Exposé" System Preferences to set one of your screen corners to "disable screen saver". Then after you start the visualizer, move your mouse into that corner.
That was suggested in this thread - http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2567786
It won't prevent your computer from going to sleep though.
Another thing that might work (I haven't tried yet) is to use Caffeine - http://www.lightheadsw.com/ - which will prevent everything that kicks in when the computer is idle (screensaver, sleep, auto-logout, etc). Activate caffeine for a specific period of time, then start your visualizer.

  • Making FPS bigger and speeding up video

Hi, i recorded video in 60fps, but the camera automatically converted video in 29,9fps, so it made the video slow-mo. But now i want the video in original 100% speed and 60fps (í want to use twixtor at some parts, so 60fps is needed). What should i do? I use after fx 5.5 and sony action cam.
    Thanks
    adik6555

...recorded in 60fps, but then automatically converted into 30fps (720p)....
And how did THAT happen?  What piece of software did this conversion?
I thought you said all the footage was at 59.94.  What's the software you're using to check the frame rate?
"A sony action cam" doesn't say a lot about the nature of the footage, and it could be crucial to your work flow.  What's the media container -- MXF? Quicktime? WMV?  What's the codec -- H.264? MPEG?
...I want to alternate the slow-mo scenes and normal scenes...
Ah, this must mean you're using an editing application.  Care to divulge which one you're using?
Have you chosen the normal-speed and slo-mo shots to make your life easier?
You mention Twixtor: how does this enter into the mix?
What will be the frame rate of the final, completed video file?
Now, let's talk AUDIO: I bet it has some.  How was it recorded?  Will you also use audio from slo-mo shots, meaning that it also sound slow and the pitch will drop a lot?
How will it be viewed -- at the movies?  What's the player being used?
Will it appear on an HD monitor?  Using what playback device -- a DVD player?  Blu-Ray?  Hard drive?
Will it only appear on YouTube or Vimeo?
Then there's also the machine you're using to create this project.  It will also help to know the details about it.
If you think I'm joking about all this stuff, stay tuned to read what other people write in this thread.

  • Final Cut Export DVCPRO HD720p uncompressed/hi-res for tape and projection

Well I've been through the many suggestions found throughout the forum and have tried many combinations of exporting options, timeline options and codecs and still for the life of me can't find the one that works. Please offer any advice you can.
    Objective:
Export a 30 minute film with a DVCPro HD 720p60 timeline shot in 720p 23.98fps as uncompressed and as high resolution as possible for transfer to a Beta-SP for big screen projection.
In trying the Uncompressed 8 and 10 bit exports the film's video became jumpy and some color's over saturated to the point of pixelation (is that a word?). I've created new Uncompressed timelines and exported from there as well to the same over saturated/pixel effect.
Is just an export of a Quicktime movie with current settings and then use compressor with "DVDPRO HD 720p60" my best options? I've tried that too but not happy with the softness of some of it and as we're projecting BIG, I want to have the best resolution possible.
Oh - and this time - size does NOT matter.
    Thanks for any pointers.

What I mean is - how to create then a Quicktime someone without Final Cut can play. Exporting as a self-contained Quicktime movie does not seem to creat the stand alone file I may need. Any tips?

  • DVCPro HD 720p24 to SD 29.97 and audio synch

this is my first time cutting dvcproHD 720p24 material. I captured via SDI and Aes over my Kona3. My audio and video appear to be in synch during capture but in my canvas and in the timeline are way off, like between 4 and10 seconds. I came out of an Aj-1200 deck and used an AES converter which connects the deck to I/O card for audio capture. Also, I am cutting in a native 720p24fps timeline, and in addition to HD output, needs to go to beta, SD 29.97fps NDF. My kona 3 does an awesome donconvert to SD but will It/I be able to edit to tape at 29.97 when I have cut in a 24fps timeline? Thanks.
    jay

You mean between 3-10 FRAMES, right? Seconds would really worry me.
When I capture that format, I capture using firewire. I always get a 2 frame offset (audio leading video by two frames). I adjust on the timeline. Once I captured a tape using my powerbook and audio was off by 8 frames. Odd. But, I just adjusted it in post. No doubt it is the AES converter that is causing the offset. Why did you use that? Audio is carried in the HD SDI signal. And there is NO offset doing it that way.
Yes, you will be able to edit to tape at 29.97 NDF from a 720p timeline with the Kona 3.

  • Does Premiere Elements support DVCPRO-HD? How do I ingest and work with HD-footage from HVX-200?

    Hi there,
I work with Premiere Elements 11 on a windows PC, and I try to ingest HD-footage from Panasonic HVX-200 Camcorder. Premiere Elements only recognizes thumbnails, but not the footage itself? What do I have to do? Or does Elements only support SD-footage? Do I have to install DVCPRO-HD Codec? Where do I get it then?
Thanks for your help!, yours Mike

    Welcome to the forum.
PrE does support HD material, just not all of it.
With DVCPRO HD on P2 media, I am not sure that you will be able to work directly with the media files from your Panasonic in PrE. This is the list of supported formats: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/premiereelements/using/WSeffff8bffc802084-1665492e133c9c19956- 8000.html#WS300DE01D-F057-4639-96D1-F99EEE163C24
PrPro can Import and edit DVCPRO HD on P2 media. The Panasonic P2, along with its metadata is supported: http://www.adobe.com/products/premiere/extend.html
    Good luck,
