Safari doesn't upgrade from 5.1, even though I use fully updated Mac OSX version 10.6.8

How do I get Safari to upgrade beyond version 5.1.10? I have fully updated software, and my OS is OS X, 10.6.8.
My old Safari version is no longer being supported by some websites. Searching the internet, I saw that I should re-install the OS X. I did that, and didn't work. Please help.

You need to upgrade the OS past 10.6.8 to get a newer Safari version. Open the Mac App Store and try downloading Mavericks. If you get told it's incompatible, choose About this Mac from the Apple menu, check if the computer has at least a Xeon or Core 2 Duo(not Core Duo) CPU and 2GB of RAM, and if it does, click here and order a download code for Lion 10.7.
Back up your data before upgrading. Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC programs such as versions of Microsoft Office prior to 2008.

Tiger install DVDs are in short supply. Tiger is no longer available at the Apple Store but may be available for $129 by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753). For other sources, do a Google search for MA453Z/A (10.4.6), MA190Z/A (10.4.3) and M9639Z/A (10.4) . Also look on eBay. Be sure & buy a retail version (black with silver X) and not a model specific version (gray). Expect to pay (possibly a lot) more than the Apple list price of $129.

Possible Alternative if you are currently using Panther 10.3 – Do a Google search for Tiger 10.4 Upgrade DVD . It will upgrade your 10.3 to 10.4, but it doesn’t contain the full retail Tiger installer. Should be cheaper than the retail Tiger install DVD.

When you upgrade the OS, do it via Archive & Install. See About the Archive and Install feature http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1710
Be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings. Also, repair permissions before and after the install.

A lot of apps have current versions that require higher iOS versions than 5.1.1
But some developers allow you to download older compatible versions of their apps. If the app is free then try downloading the current version on your computer's iTunes so that it's in your account's 'purchase' history, and then in the Purchased tab in the App Store app on your iPad see if you can download an older compatible version of the app. If the app is paid-for then try contacting the developer first and see if that will work with their app (and if they have a version compatible with iOS 5.1.1 available) - don't buy the app until you know that it will work.

You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make it drink. This person receiving my email, while on a Mac with Safari is reading their mail through Safari using Horde--our recent discovery. Why they chose to do that in unclear. The last email we sent, however, was miraculously read and received and the attachment was viewed with no problem after we told them our mail was coming from a Mac thriugh Apple Mail. It seems that telling them that our emails were coming from a Mac and using Apple Mail was enough to make them think that perhaps THEY were doing something not quite right. You can't. iCloud is not for general file backup from a Mac. It's for backup up and syncing data between mobile devices and and Macs and The following is from this Apple document: iCloud: Backup and restore overview.

Disks disappear from my desktop even though they haven't been ejected

This started happening a couple of days ago... Randomly, whatever CD is in the drive will disappear from my desktop even though I haven't ejected the CD. The only way I've been able to get it to reappear is by ejecting the CD and then re-inserting it.

It's difficult to be sure without doing some network packet sniffing, but if it were another app syncing, it would be an awful coincidence, since it seems to happen only while I'm in Reminders.app -- as soon as I click the home button and go back to the home screen, it stops; when I launch Reminders again, it starts again.
Moreover, it happens when I am not in the house, which rules out iTunes syncing.
Note that it's not the syncing spinner (i.e. two arrows chasing each other in a circle) -- it's the data access spinner (like the wait spinner in many apps and the apple.com search box).
