Same old Bondi blue FBT story, but with a twist?

Hi.
I've been all over the internet trying to understand the FBT workarounds for an old Rev A Imac and I apologize in advance if this is a redundant question.
I must admit I'm now a little confused. I think the problem with the computer is a bad FBT. When I press the power button, I get an amber light, chime, spin up and then a pop and it shuts down. When I connect an external apple monitor to it, it boots right up. Here's the kink-when I connect a PC VGA monitor through an adapter (I've tried two different adapters and three different monitors), the light stays amber and no chime. Finally, when I disconnect the external monitor and boot, with no monitor connected (just the adapter plugged into the back of the bondi) wait for the chime, and then connect the external monitor, all is well and it boots. I want to remove the motherboard and power supply from the case and just make a new case with an external monitor. Any suggestions on what this might be? Reset PRAM? Bad PRAM battery? No hope at all? The power button seems to remain amber the whole time. Should it turn green or some other color at some point?
PS-This was all done with the original OS 8.x software on the machine...
Thanks in advance!!

These forums have many more readers than posters. Some readers would be ready, willing and able to answer your question, but they may not be native speakers of English. When you use acronyms, like FBT, but do not define them, readers may have trouble understanding.
When I connect an external apple monitor to it, it boots right up.
Then it is working fine. The iMac power supply uses the Flyback transformer to generate various Voltages used to power Digital Logic inside the iMac. If the Flyback Transformer were not working, you would not get to the software-generated chime that indicates booting is likely.
when I connect a VGA monitor through an adapter (I've tried two different adapters and three different monitors), the light stays amber and no chime.
Then your adapters are not the right ones for that Mac. It is very common for the wrong adapter to cause no green light and no picture.
The adapters do two jobs:
1) they shuffle the signals around to the right pins so that you can get a picture on the display.
2) they provide a code on pins 4, 7, and 10 that tells the Mac what display is attached, thus limiting the resolutions that the Mac will allow. On later Macs they can tell the Mac to look for Digital Data Channel information from the Display.
Do you get a good boot up and a picture on the internal display if you boot from a System CD appropriate for that Mac? This test bypasses your Hard Drive and all the software on it, effectively cutting the problem into Hardware vs. Software.

  • Same Old Hard Drive Failure... with a twist

After the odd failure of my formerly reliable and beloved 17" Powerbook G4 I did some investigation.
(capitalized words are just to help make the key words stick out)
I did the standard list of trouble shooting with the system DVDs. REPAIR PERMISSIONS: Successful. REPAIR DISK: Failed. INVALID NODE STRUCTURES were found and after it tried to REBUILD CATALOG B-TREE there was and ERROR: THE UNDERLYING TASK REPORTED FAILURE ON EXIT.
So i ran the EXTENDED HARDWARE TEST.
I got an error in the mass storage: 2STF/8/3:ATA-100 ata-6-master
After several attempts to turn my computer on the furthest I could get was the login screen. Once I typed in my password, the computer would load for a long time then bring me to a DARWIN login screen. I don't know Unix commands so I didn't know what to do. Eventually I got back to the more friendly Aqua Login. This kind of thing happened many times with no sucessful login to my desktop (although Darwin login worked but I don't know how to use it.)
I looked on several online discussions and found that I was not entirely alone with this error. Everyone seems to have similar symptoms and a similar troubleshooting method, etc.
That said, here are the two reasons why I thought my case was worthy to post:
    1. Every discussion about this error I have read so far has had the same symptoms (erratic behavior, super slow running simple tasks, unexplained crashing of simple applications, slow boot and login times, etc) the only difference is, their symptoms crept in slowly over a couple months. In my case I was using the computer on and off for about 5 hours. The first 3 or 4 hours of using it were absolutely unremarkable. The system worked just as fine as it always did. Then, in the last hour, after no major changes from the other 4 hours (no downloads, installations, moving, power adapter was in the whole time with no storms, etc.), the strange symptoms began to occur. I checked the processes and everything seemed to be running fine according to the ACTIVITY MONITOR but the system was clearly bogged down somehow. I decided to do the usual fix and simply RESTART. After that I was never able to login and currently if I turn the power on, the gray screen with the apple comes up and the loading circle (not the rainbow of death one, but the line one) appears but it just spins for a while then shuts off. IN SHORT: the difference is my computer's symptoms appeared and took over in a matter of an hour or two rather than months like many other peoples'
    2. I am a silly boy and I've never done any real back up. If my hard drive has truly bitten the dust, what is the likelihood that I've lost everything?
Excuse my wordiness, brevity was never my talent.

    17" Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    You have two problems.
One is that your file directories are seriously damaged. This is clear from the notations in Disk Utility.
The other is that your HD is about to fail. This is clear from the AHT error code: 2STF/8/3:ATA-100 ata-6-master.
If it wasn't for the message in AHT, I might suggest that you try running DiskWarrior on your internal drive to see if it can fix the damaged directories. It may not hurt to try that anyway.
Either way, I would suggest that if you have access to another FireWire equipped Mac, you boot your PB into target disk mode and attempt to retrieve your personal data (docs, pictures, music, etc.) as soon as possible.
If you are unable to boot the machine into target disk mode, you might want to try using Data Rescue II from Prosoft. This app is quite good, but it will need to be installed on another machine or bootable volume on an external drive.
Should Data Rescue not work, you'll have to go to a third-party to help you with data recovery.
Last, if you don't have a warranty or an APP, it's time to start shopping for a new HD.
    Good luck.

  • Connecting an old bondi blue 233 to an existing network

I already have a network set up with an indigo g3 imac wired with an ethernet cable which is currently running on 10.3 and an g4 ibook connected wirelessly running on 10.4.
I have recently acquired an old bondi blue 233 imac and want to connect it wirelessly as it will be located too far away from the dsl router to connect it with an ethernet cable. It's currently running on os 9.2.2 and does not have an airport card. I have heard that it is possible to link it to the network with either a usb wireless adapter, a bridge (whatever that is??!!) or possibly by using another dsl router.
I was hoping someone could explain what the difference is between each method, which one works best and whether any, or all, will be compatible with os 9. I apologise for my ignorance in advance.
Mac OS 9.2.x   also running with os x 10.4 and 10.3 on the other models

Another option that no one has mentioned is using the mains power line.
There's a company called Devolo (German) and they make a collection of ethernet enabled mains plugs. One of my clients has bought a set to connect a PC in a room where the wireless will not reach and it works beautifully.
You plug one into a socket near the router, then connect it to the router with the supplied cat5 cable. Yopu then plug another into a socket near the destination computer and connect it to the computer's ethernet socket with the other cat5 cable they supply. You wait a moment or two while the 2 units synchronise and that's basically it. There's some encryption software supplied too if you want to use it.
The Register news site www.theregister.co.uk tested them out and compared them to a similar product by Zyx???? something. The Devolo ones performed better and were cheaper - but more importantly - outperformed Wireless G data-transfer speeds by a margin.
In a couple of weeks (when I've some spare cash), I'm going to get a pair and try them out for myself.
According to their website - they also do a plug with a built-in wireless access point.

  • Same old "how to limit history" question with FF 27.0.1

Windows 7 Pro., FF 27.0.1, Add-Ons Adobe and Flash (and it's auxiliaries)...just the basics. My box is a server as well as used for more ordinary tasks...email, browsers, document editors, etc, so it is always "on" and never in "idle." Therefore the add-ons that do these things don't do anything on my box.
This is, I know, is an old question, but unresolved, in my opinion. I revive it from this post:
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/799503?fpa=1
First let me say I consider Firefox the best browser period. I like Mozilla's and Firefox's essential philosophy of user customization and control, while respecting their need to insure security and stability.
OK, the question is obvious from the title, How can I limit the history with Firefox? I have observed more recently where the enabling and disabling of JavaScript from the preferences options was removed. I read the Bugzilla and Firefox rationale and it was not difficult for me to open a about:config tab next to a tab containing a page I was working on so I could see how the page rendered without JavaScript. Once you knew how, it was only slightly more difficult than using the preferences options...so that does not really bother me.
The limiting of history is implied in the browser itself where, if you open up the history window, you can see your history and (for me) see an "older than six months" option which if you mouse over and right click will get a "delete" option. I think everyone who tries this crashes their browser and if anything is removed when you finally get it back up, it will be your cache.
I know that the amount of history is set in about:config in the setting "places.history.expiration.transient_current_max_pages" as an integer. From reading many articles here in "support", and from personal trial, I find that though that number can be increased, it can't be decreased. If one does, it reverts back to the old setting as soon as Firefox is re-opened.
I have read the blog referenced in the first link above: http://blog.bonardo.net/2010/01/20/places-got-async-expiration and it even seems outdated, containing references to places.history.expiration.max_pages, which is not the file in about:config in 27.0.1
In https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=643254 I read the debate/discussion about these changes where Marco Bonardo steadfastly holds to his position while I find the comment by al_9x discussing the issue with him; "You have removed functionality that people use and like, that's been in Fx from its inception. It is you who need to justify its removal. And your justification of "nobody really wants to expire history" is a lie, people do and I explained why", to represent my feeling completely. I have no need or desire for history longer than 3 months. It is high-handed to limit Firefox users ability to limit their history. And no...I did not create yet another Mozilla account and "vote."
There must be some way I and other users can limit (or increase) their history. So I am asking "How"? If it is currently impossible, by design itself, to do so then I find that a very disturbing trend away from the whole philosophy of user control and customization.
If I am missing something, please inform me. Please *don't* send me a bunch of the standard "help" articles, for I have read them all. So that's my question.
    Regards,
    Axis

    Thank you cor-el!
I have added the new integer places.history.expiration.max_pages and when I added it places.history.expiration.transient_current_max_pages changed its value to equal what I had put in places.history.expiration.max_pages.
This is all I needed, I believe. I did not know I was to ''create'' the new integer, now I know how to do so and to your credit you I would like to say to all the Firefox users that this is the best solution I have read to the oft asked question, "How Can I Limit my History in Firefox."

  • Same problem with 10.4.9 but with a twist

So I am having the same problem many others are having after installing the new update. There is just the grey scren with the apple logo and a spinning progress wheel. I have tried to start up from the installer disk to reinstall, However, I am told that I don't have enough free space. So how am I supposed to free up any space when I can't get to anything!!
mac mini   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Unless you have a bootable backup/clone on another disk and can boot into it, you'll have to boot with the install disk, enter your language, and, when the menu bar pops up, select Utilities->Terminal and use it to delete stuff. If you're not familiar with the command line interface, you have a daunting task. Alternatively, if you have another computer, you could mount the mini into target disk mode (see http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583 for details), and use the host computer to delete stuff from the mini.

  • Photos missing from iPhoto/TM backup but with a twist.....

So, there is a challenging twist associated with this case of missing photos and I hope an expert can provide some advice. Note: This is not related to upgrading from iPhoto '09 to '11 thank goodness!
Here is the story in condensed form, with additional details below:
MBP stolen but backed up with TM
Used TM on the replacement MBP to browse backup of iPhoto backup of stolen MBP
Restored iPhoto library to new MBP
Open iPhoto on new MBP and browse library
Everything looks OK except *FIVE* Events which show in the Event viewer as blank grey squares. However, the Events have the correct titles and show the correct number of pictures in brackets in the title. In addition, using the trackpad to scroll over the Event there are no thumbnails visible. If I click on the Event all the photos are greyed out but they do have the correct titles and keywords below the grey boxes. If I click on an individual photo I get a black exclamation mark in a grey circle. Interestingly the LAST IMPORT folder in iPhoto DOES show the thumbnails for ALL the missing pictures, all arrange with the correct Event titles. Of course, clicking on any individual picture gives me the same exclamation mark detailed above.
After reading these support forums I have tried the following:
    1) Viewed package contents ---> the blank Events DO NOT show up as folders in the Finder window
    2) Used COMMAND & OPTION to launch iPhoto and checked the following boxes in the REBUILD DIALOG BOX: rebuild small thumbnails/rebuild all of the photos' thumbnails/recover orphaned photos/examine and repair permissions ---> Issue persists
    3) Download iPhoto Manager and tried EXTRACTING all the photos from the library --> Photos from missing events still not showing up. Not really surprising given that the VIEW PKG. CONTENTS in #1 above didn't show them either.
    4) Used iPhoto Manager to REBUILD LIBRARY --> still doesn't show them
    5) Used TM to browse the backup directly --> missing photos have blank placeholders only.
It appears for what ever reason the photos have been deleted from the backup. I say "deleted", as opposed to "not backup up", because iPhoto has the remnants of the photos (i.e, Events, thumbnails, titles, keyword, etc.). Any suggestions on how to possibly recover these missing pictures. How about the thumbnail versions at least, even in their their low resolution form. Although, I admit I don't know how/where thumbnails are dealt with in iPhoto as they don't seem to show up in the Library package contents.
    Additional info:
OSX 10.7.5, iPhoto '09 is version 8.1.2, and iPhoto library is 75GB, 139 Events, 28,000 pics
The day before the MBP was stolen I downloaded a number of photos and did some editing. That night plugged the MBP in and noticed that the Time Machine did a number of backups through the night, although the iPhoto library seems untouched but can't be sure. The following morning, the computer was used for a few hours and thus had plenty of time to complete any backups necessary.
The *FIVE* Events that are affected seem to be the most recent ones, worked on the night before the MBP was stolen.

I cannot say for certian but it is highly likley that YES, when the person finished editing they just closed the lid of the computer and didn't actually quit iPhoto. So would this explain why there are fragmenst of them in the backup (i.e. Events, keywords, thumbnails, etc.) but not the actual image files? Any way I can at least save the extremely low res thumbnail versions?
I'm also going to try Data Rescue on the camera memory card to try and recover them that way.
    Thanks.

  • Ipod not being recognised, but with a twist

    Hi,
My ipod nano 5th Gen is not being recognised on my computer. It is now being recognised by the computer itself sometimes, but not itunes. However, when I plug my ipod into my partners laptop, its fine. More to the point, when they plug their's into my laptop, it recognises them. To me, this suggests that both my laptop and my ipod, individually at least, are working.
I have been through the ipod support page, and gone through all the steps, and to no avail.
Final details. I'm Windows 8, and my itunes is totally up to date. I have re-installed iTunes, and have reset my ipod to factory settings on another computer. It still doesn't work, please help if you know anything about this!!
    Cheers,
    Ralf

I have the same issues. itunes 5.0.1.4 doesn't recognize my mini. ipod updater doesn't recognize my mini either. i have uninstalled itunes 5 and reinstalled 4.9, but it didn't work still. something in itunes 5 changed something in my system that reinstalling 4.9 doesn't fix it. updater just shows that i have no ipod connected. if i try to get updater to check for my ipod during the updater installatin, it just sits there and says "waiting for ipod". it's not my usb port because i can read and write to my ipod. i did the entire list of chores that apple suggests on the site including disabling all other functions and services, reinstalling the com port, uninstalling everything, reinstalling everything, getting windows install clean up, e v e r y t h i n g! nothing worked.
I then installed itunes 4.9 and updater 1.4 in my other laptop. i was able to update to firmware 1.4 using that computer. when i put the ipod into that computer w/ itunes 4.9, everything works fine. of course, it asks me if i want to link that laptop w/ my ipod. i said no, because i want to use my original laptop w/ the ipod.
anybody have a solution for this? it's like we all have the same symptoms and going to the same doctor and we end up having to diagnose ourselves. this is extremely annyoying and inefficient.

  • Automator & podcast - but with a twist

    So, here goes.
Every day, numerous small audio segments, from 5 seconds to 2 minutes long, get delivered to a particular gmail account as attachments, each a single attachment to an individual email. They are then routed to a mailbox on my mac.
I need an automator action - or several - to do the following every day:
    a) download the audio attachments from that mail folder to a folder on my desktop or elsewhere;
    b) format those into a daily podcast - but not one big single file, rather a podcast with "enclosures" (is that what you call it?) where each segment is a different track/chapter;
    c) upload the podcast, appropriately formatted, to some filespace somewhere.
The podcast/feed on my Typepad site will, I assume, link to the newest file each day.
Is this the kind of thing that Automator can do? Do I need another piece of software in addition? If so, what? Should I attempt to do it myself, or hire someone?

    Many thanks.

  • Another 'can this wirelessly extend my network' question, but with a twist

Perhaps not a great twist, but I'm running a powerline network in my home, from an Apple Extreme-N Airport. Love the speed, but am wondering if I can simply plug an Airport Express on the far end of the house into the powerline system and use it to broadcast the signal where it's a bit weak.
Is this possible? It sure seems so. I much appreciate the help

Welcome to the discussion area, applenewbie80!
but am wondering if I can simply plug an Airport Express on the far end of the house into the powerline system and use it to broadcast the signal where it's a bit weak.
Yes, you can do this if you configure the AirPort Express as a "bridge" to create a wireless network using the same wireless network name, security and password as your AirPort Extreme network.
Then, computers will be able to "roam" from one area to another and stay on the same network. Or, you could assign a different name and log in for the AirPort Express wireless if you preferred.
Post back if you need more information.

  • Yet another imessage to one specific person thread - but with a twist.

    Hi.
Monday this week I started experiencing difficulties sending imessages to one specific person from my phone. The messages would leave my phone but I get no indication of anything - no red error symbol, no "delievered", just silence. We are constantly sending each other messages and have been for quite some time - always using imessage. First off it looked like the messages was not being sent at all but I have discovered that they are delivered after 10-20 minutes.
What I have tried so far:
Can successfully send and recieve messages to and from others using imessage
    Rebooted phone
Turned off imessages and reset network settings
Turned off imessages and facetime and removed email addresses
Used flight mode with only WIFI enabled and vice verca
Tried from a new iphone device set up as a new phone
What the other person has tried:
Can successfully send and recieve messages to and from others using imessage
    Rebooted phone
Turned off imessages and reset network settings
Tried from a new iphone device set up as a new phone
I do not have the faintest idea as to what can be the problem now and would really appreciate some good pointers.
    Regards
    Thomas

Good idea. But wouldn't this have been covered by trying to message each other from a new phone - set up with no restore and hench being empty?

  • Another "can't download support drivers" question (but with a twist)

From looking through the forum it seems that a lot of people are having difficulty downloading the drivers through the boot camp assistant, and the most common advice seems to be to use the drivers that come with the snow leopard 10.6 install disc.
That's all good and well, except I have just bought a brand new iMac and it had Mountain Lion on it already. It did not come with any software installation disc.
So my question is: how do I get the windows support software onto my machine if I can't download it through the boot camp assistant?
Should I have received a system software CD with my computer?
    Many thanks in advance.

Well I got everything up and running today, not a bother.
It actually only took about an hour, if that, to download the drivers. Possibly because I downloaded them early this morning (which would be the middle of the night over in the US and so probably a lot less people trying to download it from the apple servers).
For a while only the keyboard was working but for some reason the wireless mouse wasn't, but I just ran the driver installer again and it seemed to resolve itself.
So thanks for all the help guys, much appreciated.

  • Missing .MSI but with a twist

Hi There I have searched the forum for the specific answer to this message I keep getting when I try to either download and install OR remove with CCleaner.

Also for some reason my DVD player is not showing up in the device manager and somewhere along the line I read that iTunes/QuickTime are most likely the "culprits".

  • Saving a file in Vi creates same file but with ~ added [SOLVED]

    Hi,
I'm not sure if I pressed a key combination, but when I save a file in Vi I get another file that has the same name as the original file but with the ~ character added to the end of the filename.  For example, if I edit foo.txt and save it, then the original will be saved, but I'll also get a new file named foo.txt~.  Does anyone know how to fix this?
    Thanks!

I think that the default backup settings (in /etc/virc if you use the basic vi package) changed with the recent upgrade to Vim 7.2.25.
For information on file backup setting combinations, see :help backup-table in Vim.
    Edit:
    fwojciec wrote:http://thehumblecoder.wordpress.com/200 … kup-files/
That article advocates disabling the use of swap files (:set noswapfile); however, I wouldn't recommend it. Whereas backup files are designated with a trailing tilde (~), swap files have names ending with .swp. The latter should be removed automatically when Vim exits (unless it is exited abnormally, such as when the user closes a terminal emulator without first quitting an instance of Vim that is running inside it).

  • Upgrade my Bondi Blue G3 to OS 9.?

    Hi:
The kids pulled out my old Bondi Blue G3. I have reinstalled all the original discs and so it is running on 8.5 (not 8.6....I am having a hard time trying to figure out how to upgrade now to 8.6...I'll take suggestions on this issue too, unable to find what I need at apple support). But....
Anyway, some of the kiddie software needs system 9.x So I was going to buy the OS 9 discs on ebay. There is a lot there to chose from. I am not sure exactly what discs I need. Can I just buy a copy of 9.2 and that will work? Anything special I need to know? Simply want to get to the highest 9.xx as possible at least cost.
Other details on this computer: 233 MHz, and 96 Mg RAM.
    Many kind thx!!

You can purchase a OS 9.1 or OS 9.2.1 universal installer CD & then go to Apple's download site & download the OS 9.2.2 update. However, personally, I would just stay with OS 9.1 or OS 9.2.1. You really do not need OS 9.2.2 which is really a cosmetic OS for OS X.

Prior to doing any of the above I would run a 3rd party utility (DiskWarrior, Techtool Pro or Norton Utilities v5.03) to make sure the system is in tip top shape & then run the utility again after all the installations plus rebuild your desktop.
If you do not have any of the above mentioned utilities, then boot from your system install cd (the one that originally came w/your comp) while holding down the c key & run Disk First Aid from the Utilities folder. Have DFA repair any errors it finds.
