SAP BI 4.0 to ESRI-GIS

Dear All,
I've read there is a native integration to ESRI-GIS systems in SAP Business Objects BI 4.0.
Can anybody tell me if I'm wrong?
I've found only third party tools performing SAP Business Objects Integration for ESRI GIS, like APOS software.
Can ESRI integration be performed with any tool in the actual SAP BO Suite 4.0?
Can I actually connect with any SAP BO tool to ESRI system?
Thank you.
Best Regards,
Gian Franco

  • GIS/ESRI Integration

    Hi
    I'm very new to SAP (1month) and still trying to find my feet. We would like to integrate SAP RE and GIS. I've managed to find some documentation that mentions things like standard interfaces,Business Connector, BAPI, ESRI_R3.dll etc but nothing specific.
    Can anyone help clarify the following.
    1. How would I go about integrating the 2 products, ie. what options do I have, what products are required?
    2. Is it plug and play giving you some standard functionality or is it API/DLL based where you have to develop your solution?
    3. Who provides the interface/integration? SAP, ESRI or both
    4. If the standard interface gives you standard functionality can additional functionality be developed, in what language and from which side (SAP/ESRI)?
    5. Can you make either product the master app? eg:with PP-GIS, GIS is the master. What do I do if I want SAP RE to be the master?
    6. What kind of developers do I need?
    7. Are there different integration methods/requirements for each product eg: ArcGIS, ArcIMS?
    8. Where can I get some decent technical information that can answer some/most of the above?
    Thanks for everyone's time and help

    hello,
    i have a seamed problem,
    idea is simply to display an ESRI GIS map within a dynpro while providing data integrity.
    my first aim is to achieve a simple connectivity such as selecting some lines from an ALV grid control cause points on map to be selected. (and vice-versa if possible).
    any idea or advice on how to achieve this, greatly appreciated.
    many thanks.

  • GIS Upgrade in an SAP Lanscape

    All,
    I would like to see if anybody has experiance with ugprading a GIS environment withing a SAP Landscape.
    Current Environment
    Application = GIS 4.1 on Windows Server 2003
    Database = MS SQL Server 2000 on Windows Server 2003
    Target Environment
    Application: Sterling Integrator (GIS 5.1)
    Application Server: Linux Red Hat 5
    Database: MS SQL Server
    We have around 30 interfaces going through GIS. I got a quote that this is a 9 month effort and around US$1 Mio. Does this sound right to anybody? Also what is the opinion about Linux and a MS SQL environment?
    Thanks,
    Alex

    I have recenty upgraded the GIS application last month and it is working fine. I am not familiar with SQL Server so cannot tell you the exact complexicity on that.
    Initial Version
    GIS 4.3 on Wndows 2003 Server with Oracle 10G
    After Upgrade
    Sterling Integrator 5.1 with Patch on Windows 2003 with Oracle 11g
    I dont remember the exact number of interface but is was more then 30 and i have not found so much Complexicty which needs 9 month. I have done it in 1 month and upgraded the Test/Prd environment of GIS

  • Instead of the transaction the SAP initial screen appears...

    Hi all.
    Does somebody know why sometimes when I call a transaction through an ITS server , just appears the initial screen of the SAP system?
    For example:
    I execute this transaction (IW29) through the SAP ITS server:
    http://sapits1.esri.com/scripts/wgate/webgui/!?~transaction=IW29
    but the result doesnt show me the transaction, just the initial screen of the SAP system
    I remember happened to me before but I dont remember what was the solution.
    Thank you very much,
    Jessica.

    Hi Tobias,
    Sorry for the delay...actually I dont find anything in the trace files... I checked all the log files and couldnt see anything... did you mean any trace file in particular?
    I wonder if the problem has to do with the fact that I have installed 2 ITS instances in one server...the agate.exe processes consume lots of memory in the server...and I read in OSS note that you could experiment problems with more than one ITS 6.20 instance in one server.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

  • ESRI Integration in Xcelsius

    Hello,
    It is to my understanding that Xcelsius 2008 can now integrate with ESRI GIS data.  As of right now I can not find any workflows or documentation as to how this integration works.  Is there anyone here that may be able to lead me in the right direction?
    Thanks,
    Chris

    Hi Chris,
    I did some checking on the Business Objects website and found this information for you:
    [http://www.businessobjects.com/solutions/for_your_data/esri.asp]
    Xcelsius itself does not integrate with ESRI. BusinessObjects XI can be integrated with ESRI; and BusinessObjects Xcelsius Enterprise 2008 can pull data from BusinessObjects XI using data connectivity options.

    Confirm SAP BW support package, kernel and DB/OS configuration     Analyze current Support Package and DB/OS/Kernel configurations in your SAP BW landscape in relation to the SAP BW 3.x upgrade requirements.
         Apply necessary support packages, kernel patches, and DB and OS patches to meet upgrade requirements
         Basis
    Alignment of SAP BW objects within your SAP BW system landscape     Check and, where required, re-align SAP BW Objects and developments in your SAP BW system landscape (Development, Quality Assurance and Production).
    SAP BW Object differences can impact the quality of testing in the Development and Test environment and can lead to change management issues.
         This check is to minimize risk and ensure productive objects are being tested prior to the Production upgrade.
    Where alignment issues exist and realignment is not possible, alternative testing plans should be devised.
         Basis/BW
    Confirm all developments are deployed.     Ensure that all SAP BW developments are deployed or they are to be re-developed/tested after the upgrade.
         In the DEV system, all SAP BW development transports should be released (i.e. transport created and released) and imported to all downstream systems (i.e. QAS and PRD systems).
    For SAP BW developments not already collected in the transport collector, a decision must be made:
    Deploy the developments or wait until the upgrade has completed to deploy.
    o     Development to be deployed should be collected, released, and imported into the QAS and PRD systems.
    o     Developments that should be deployed after the upgrade should be re-tested/re-developed after the upgrade.
         In the QAS or PRD systems, ensure that all SAP BW development transports have been imported prior to the upgrade.

         Basis/BW
    Pre-upgrade Process:
    Download required BI 7.0 support package Stack for inclusion in the upgrade     Determine the equivalent support package level of the source SAP BW release and the target SAP BW release.
         There is a minimum requirement that you upgrade to at least the equivalent support package level on the target SAP BW release so that you do not lose functionality, corrections, and data.
         It is recommended to upgrade to the latest version of all support packages during the upgrade via the upgradeu2019s support package binding functionality.
         BI 7.0 Support Packages are delivered via SAP NetWeaver u201904 Support Package stacks (SP-Stacks). It is not recommended to partially apply some of the SP-Stacksu2019 individual support packages. You should apply all of the SP-Stacks support packages at once.
    For more information on the SP-Stacks and SAP NetWeaver SP-Stacks, please see the SAP service marketplace alias SP-Stacks (http://service.sap.com/sp-stacks)
         You should also review, download, and bind in support packages for all add-on components that are installed on SAP BW and will be upgraded during the SAP BW upgrade (e.g. SEM-BW, ST-PI, etc)
         Basis
    Apply latest Support Package tool patch     Apply latest SPAM patch before executing PREPARE     Basis
    Validate the SAP BW (ABAP) Data Dictionary and the Database Data Dictionary for consistency     Check Database consistency
         Transaction DB02:
    o     Execute ABAP SAP_UPDATE_DBDIFF and re-execute DB02 check. This gives a truer view of the SAP BW objects in DB02.
    o     Check missing database objects (indices, tables, etc)
    o     Missing indices may identify erred data loads or process problems
    Tip: Missing indices on InfoCubes can be restored by RSRV or ABAP SAP_INFOCUBE_INDEXES_REPAIR
    Note: check for running data loads before executing a repair!
    o     Check DDIC/DB consistency
         Verify database objects and consistency
    (e.g. SAPDBA check for offline data files)
         BW
    Remove unnecessary SAP BW temporary database objects     Delete all SAP BW temporary database objects:
         Execute routine housekeeping ABAP SAP_DROP_TMPTABLES.
         This reduces the numbers of database objects that need to be copied during the upgrade.
         Note: take care not to delete objects that are in use as this will cause queries, compressions, etc to terminate.
         BW
    Validate your SAP BW Objects for correctness prior to your upgrade     Using the SAP BW Analysis Tool (transaction RSRV), perform extensive tests on all important SAP BW Objects to ensure their correctness prior to the upgrade.
    Note: this test should be repeatable so you can re-validate after the upgrade!
         Ensure that any inconsistencies are identified and corrected
         RSRV has a number of extensive tests and if all checks are executed will consume a large amount of time. Multiple tests can be performed in parallel.
         Tip: Some corrections in development can be deployed to other systems via transport in advance of the next upgrade.
         BW
    Ensure DB Statistics are up to date prior to the upgrade          Check DB statistics for all tables.
    Tables without statistics, especially system tables, can seriously impact upgrade runtimes.
         Check DB statistics for missing Indexes for InfoCubes and Aggregates

    Check InfoObject status          Check for revised (modified) InfoObjects that have not been activated.
    All InfoObjects should be active or saved (not activate):
    o     Check all inactive InfoObjects:
    Transaction RSD1 (Edit InfoObjects),
    click on u201CAll InfoObjectsu201D radio button and click the u201CDisplayu201D button.
    Modified InfoObjects are denoted by yellow triangles!
    o     Determine if revision should be activated or removed.
         'Reorgu2019 or u2018Repairu2019 all InfoObjects
    This checks and repairs any discrepancies in the InfoObject definition and structures. It is common to have obsolete DDIC and table entries for InfoObjects after multiple upgrades and definition changes. These obsolete entries normally do not effect normal SAP BW operations.
         Transaction RSD1 (Edit InfoObjects), Select u201CExecute Repairu201D or u201CExecute Reorgu201D Use expert mode for selective executions.
         BW
    All ODS data loads must be activated.          Activate all inactivated ODS Object requests.
    All ODS u2018Mu2019 tables must be emptied prior to the upgrade as a new activate process is implemented

    All Transfer and Update rules should be active          Check for inactive Update and Transfer Rules
    o     All update rules and transfer rules should be active or deleted.
    o     Look into the table RSUPDINFO for update rules and search for the version "not equal" to "A". Likewise use the table RSTS for Transfer rules/structure.     BW
    All InfoCubes should be active          Check for inactive InfoCubes and Aggregates (Aggregates are InfoCubes too!)
    o     All InfoCubes should be activated or deleted.
    o     Execute ABAP RSUPGRCHECK to locate any inactive InfoCubes. See SAP note 449160.
         BW
    All Web Report objects should be consistent prior the upgrade.          Check the consistency of your SAP BW web objects (web reports, web templates, URLs, roles, etc). All objects should be consistent prior to web object conversion after the upgrade. It is recommended to ensure consistency before the upgrade.
    o     For Original release SAP BW 3.x:
    A SAP BW web reporting objects check can be executed via a new check in RSRV. This is provided via a SAP BW support package.
    Please see SAP note 484519 for details.

  • BI ETL Integration Functional Specifications

    Hi All,
    I am into implementation project, Currently Design Phase is in progress.
    Need suggestions to understand about the BI ETL Integration Functional Specification
    can any one through some light on BI ETL FS document and its content.
    Please provide me detailed information to understand the functional specifications in SAP BI.
    Thanks in advance.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Venkat Ganni.

    Thanks for your response, but we are looking for integration between SAP NW BI (or BW) not BusinessObjects.
    Sorry for the post. I can't seem to be able to present in the format I wanted.
    I believe that is it a limitation on SDN form messaging format where I can't go beyond a certain number of texts automatically forcing the message in one big chunk.
    But the summary requirements is to build a bi-directional bridge between GIS and BI u2018seamlesslyu2019 whereby:
    1. A user can select an area of the ESRI-GIS map through a polygon containing combinations of characteristics and values (e.g. project, WBS, functional location, equipment, asset number etc.)
    2. Then with a click on button somewhere on the map with execute a BI report (can be Web-based or Excel-based) processing these characteristics for display.
    3. Then a user can navigate on this existing (or new) BI report (web or excel-workbook) to reach a new results set (like maybe smaller number of projects previously passed on and then with a click on a button in the BI report
    4. Users will be able to view the graphical representation on these characteristics on the ESRI-GIS map.
    In short, we are trying to find a way to pass list of values of any number to a BW report (either web or excel-workbook) for processing before execution and vice versa with an ESRI-GIS map.

  • Installation of Solaris 10 pr x86 paltform

    Hello !
    Recently I get a version of Solaris 10 for x86 paltform.
    I've tried to install Solaris on my comp but I get the next
    error:
    elf32 read error
    Load error: Read of "paltform/i86pc/kernel/unix failed.
    First I thought that the problem is in SATA 160 Maxtor disk,
    becouse i had one problem with live distribution of Ubuntu Linux too.
    So I remove this harddisk and i've replaced it with the ATA Maxtor disk.
    I've got the same result.
    Has anyone any idea what could be wrong?
    Thank you!

    I'm newbie in Unix arena so what is "elf32 and " fb" ?
    I was hooked by linux three years ago, and now I'm trying to find out what the really UNIX lookse like. And the other reason is that ESRI (GIS software) software works better on UNIX platform then Linux.

  • Urgent: MAC fails issue

    Hi ,
    I would like to ask this question again to oaf top users/gurus( Tapash Ray ,Shiv Saroj,Mukul Gupta,Ramkumar Sekar,Sumit Sharma, avajain, Srinath Mani) to put some light on this issue. Many thanks!
    <br><br>
    Hi OAF Guru's
    <br><br>
    My goal is to communicate between projects screen and ESRI MAP.
    If I want to click on a button in the projects screen then I want to zoom in to a group of geometry regions in the ESRI MAP.
    If I want to click in the ESRI MAP in a region then I want to do something in projects screen such as navigating to another projects screen etc.
    <br><br>
    To realize this goal: <br>
    I have extended a standard Projects page and add a region to show a ESRI GIS map.
    <br><br>
    To be exact:
    <br><br>
    ProjectSetDetailsPG
    PA_PROJECT_SET_DETAILS_LAYOUT: (Region Style: PageLayout)<br>
    ......<br>
    <my additions><br>

    GisMapRN: (Region Style: messageComponentLayout)<br>
    messageLayout1(type:)<br>
    MapRawText (type: rawText<br>
    <br><br>
    Behind the GisMapRN I have added a Controller. <br>
    <br>
    In the Controller I do the next:<br>
    <br>
    .....<br>
    public void processRequest(OAPageContext oapagecontext, OAWebBean oawebbean)<br>
    {<br>

    .....<br>
    <br>
    If I navigate via responsibility: Project Super User and via the path: Project Sets > Click one of the Project Set Name > then I can see the adapted Project Sets screen with stadard Projects region and below that the new added ESRI map region.<br>
    The new region has a button to zoom in in the ESRI map and the ESRI map itself with some geometry information.<br>
    The functionality of button is as working expected: (zoomToProjectSet(project_set_id) ).<br>
    But when I click one of the geometry region to call for example Project Overview screen then I get the error message:<br>
    "You have insufficient privileges for the current operation. Please contact your System Administrator.
    You cannot run a page which is not SelfSecured when the MAC fails."
    <br><br>
    It is remarkable if I click the Project Name links in the Project Overview screen these have all different oas text <br>

    <br>
    When click the ESRI map region which try to reproduce same action as Project Name links in the Project Overview screen then I get almost the same URL but the value for oas is same for all different paProjectId's:<br>
    OA_HTML/OA.jsp?_rc=PA_PROJECT_HOME_LAYOUT&_ri=275&addBreadCrumb=RS&paProjectId=4832&_ti=2094430068&oapc=3&oas=7XDzPk3HK9fR2emiJYeO9Q..<br>

    <br>
    I know the issue lie on oas value but I could NOT get the right value for this parameter in the above URLs. <br>
    <br>
    Has someone some idea how to solve this issue.<br>
    <br>
    Many thanks,<br>
    <br>

    Cafer,
    If you see old threads i have explained that the three profiles Kali mentioned... is basically to bypass the MAC key validation in Apps.If you don't want to change these profiles, you would need to use bound values api's to attach js function with onclick attribute of button.
    If you are new to bound values concept, this is what u need to do:
    1)In process request, use
    pagecontext.putJavaScriptFunction();
    2)Make a PVO with transient attribute say x whose query can be like
    select 'javascript:<function name>' from dual
    3) Use bound value view object api to attach with ON_CLICK_ATTR of button.

  • Problems with stopping dbconsole & iSQL+

    I have 2 databases (10.2.01) on 1 Linux RedHat server. We needed to implement ESRI GIS that’s why we wanted to keep those DB separate – GIS is on 2nd DB.
    I have problem with shutting down dbconsole & iSQL+:
    dbconsole is starting normally, but on shutdown it gives error „Failed to shutdown DBConsole Gracefully”. Not sure if it happens coz of 2 DBs on same server, because I forgot to add something to config files or I 1ce accidentally restarted server while DB was set to shut down normally.
    Reverting GIS DB to backup after making startup/shutdown script 1st box restart, but before box restart mid-normal DB shutdown didn’t change a thing.
    Startup/shutdown script in “/etc/rc.d/init.d”:
    #!/bin/sh
    # chkconfig: 345 99 10
    # description: Oracle auto start-stop script.
    # Set ORA_HOME to be equivalent to the $ORACLE_HOME
    # from which you wish to execute dbstart and dbshut;
    # Set ORA_OWNER to the user id of the owner of the
    # Oracle database in ORA_HOME.
    ORA_HOME=<Oracle home dir>
    ORA_OWNER=oracle
    if [ ! -f $ORA_HOME/bin/dbstart ]
    then
    echo "Oracle startup: cannot start"
    exit
    fi
    case "$1" in
    'start')
    # Start the Oracle databases:
    # The following command assumes that the oracle login
    # will not prompt the user for any values
    su - $ORA_OWNER -c "$ORA_HOME/bin/dbstart $ORA_HOME"
         su - $ORA_OWNER -c "ORACLE_SID=<DB SID>;$ORA_HOME/bin/emctl start dbconsole"
         su - $ORA_OWNER -c "ORACLE_SID=<GIS SID>;$ORA_HOME/bin/emctl start dbconsole"
         su - $ORA_OWNER -c "ORACLE_SID==<DB SID>;$ORA_HOME/bin/isqlplusctl start"
    'stop')
    # Stop the Oracle databases:
    # The following command assumes that the oracle login
    # will not prompt the user for any values
         su - $ORA_OWNER -c "ORACLE_SID==<DB SID>;$ORA_HOME/bin/isqlplusctl stop"
         su - $ORA_OWNER -c "ORACLE_SID==<DB SID>;$ORA_HOME/bin/emctl stop dbconsole"
         su - $ORA_OWNER -c "ORACLE_SID==<GIS SID>;$ORA_HOME/bin/emctl stop dbconsole"
    su - $ORA_OWNER -c "$ORA_HOME/bin/dbshut $ORA_HOME"
    Esac
    iSQL+ is also starting normally, but on stopping it gives:
    iSQL*Plus 10.2.0.1.0
    Copyright (c) 2003, 2005, Oracle. All rights reserved.
    Stopping iSQL*Plus ...
    Error: Unable to find java:comp/ServerAdministrator: Lookup error: javax.naming.AuthenticationException: Invalid username/password for default (admin); nested exception is: javax.naming.AuthenticationException: Invalid username/password for default (admin)
    iSQL*Plus stopped.
    But it’s still running…
    I only managed to work around dbconsole by editing emctl.pid to match Enterprise Manager Agent Port for respective SID (not sure even if you can call that workaround), but emctl.pid seems to be random on dbconsole start.
    I really don’t want to put any DB updates on until I manage to shutdown dbconsoles & iSQL+ properly… or maybe update IS the solution.
    GIS DB is just created - no data on it. So I can delete it if its gona help, but Id prefer to solve this as experience never hurts (especially if Im gona have 2 DBs on 1 box).
    I’m new to Oracle – been on Administration workshop & backup/recovery courses, but those problems don’t really feel like basic stuff so some tips on this would be welcome.
    Thanks in advance.

    According to my little knowledge - i don't think Oracle is an AIDB. It is only RDBMS or rather you can call it Advanced RDBMS.
    Now, you are thinking that since you have provided the relavant table here - so Oracle should automatically pic the single records. Since you have define every logic including the concept of primary key, foreign key in your table.
    But, question is - did you apply the relationship in your join between the tables.
    What does a primary key, foreign key do inside a table? Is it automatically select the unique rows from the join tables - when you didn't mention the join criterion.
    If you think that - then you are wrong. My advice is - kindly go through the JOIN Concept.
    Then start your coding. This is very dangerous way to start. Learn the basics at least.
    So, what Senti suggested has a very much valid point.
    Regards.

  • ArcSDE / OWM / WKBF / Index

    Hello
    I've some questions about ArcSDE :
    1- When you stored data using the WKBF (well known binary format) you don't need spatial to store data? It's just BLOB on Oracle Table? (... and you don't have any 'geoSQL functions' to use data from Oracle)
    2- Could we use multigeometry table (ie more than one MDSYS.SDO_GEOMETRY column in one table) with ArcSDE?
    3- Is ArcSDE creating index on Oracle Spatial Table? ... R-Tree is supported?
    4- OWM (Workspace manager) seems to do the same things as SDE versionning and register. Could we use OWM for GIS like mapinfo and SDE versionning for ESRI GIS on the same dataset?... What do exactly SDE versionning to table structure?
    5- In Oracle 9 OWM is no longer in beta... do you know if GIS company will use OWM to implement versionning from the GIS interface?
    Thanks for all
    Francois

    1. You are correct. You do not need Spatial, but then you do not get spatial SQL functions. You have to use ArcSDE and ArcObjects for that functionality.
    2. No. Only one MDSYS.GDO_GEOMETRY column is supported in ArcSDE.

  • Help Please. Bootcamp installation error. Mac newbie

    Hello.
    I just bought a brand new 24" iMac about two weeks ago. Downloaded BootCamp beta today, updated all software and firmware. Installed bootcamp, installed Windows Media Center 2005 SP2. Before that I created a new 32gb partition to keep the FAT system the same. This is my first Mac, I love OS X, unfortunately I need to run ESRI GIS software which is only PC compatible. Anyway, Windows installs, I try ejecting the CD, and it would not ehect. I restarted the computer to go back to OS X, but the disc never ejected, and it reads off the installation disc. I can not boot OS X now. How can I get the disc out, without OS X? And/Or what should I do to safe the least amount of hassle. I installed this POS OS on its own partition. I am very windows and computer literate, but this one just seems to scratch my head. My nervous than anything, spent over $2700 said and done, and I don't feel like problems within two weeks already. Any help would be appreciated. Thank You

    Awesome links. Also helped me. I sold my powerbook g4 before because of terrible it was to run virtual pc ... now debating if I should do bootcamp or parallels option ... probably going with parallels ...
    Smart idea: My advice is to install BootCamp (with fat partition/Vol) but use Parallels with that as its Win Drive.
    *Virtual pc is an Emulator which is utterly different technology and with heavy overheads.*
    Don't believe most of the negative stuff you'll read here about parallels - it's almost all wrong/caused by misunderstanding.
    Pre-leopard (which i don't use) BootCamp is BETA. Don't trust it.
    Use parallels and have it use the Windows Partition.
    It's not emulation - in most case it's stable, megafast flexible and reliable.
    It is 'Virtualisation - a technology around in Mainframes for years and the Virtual Machine approach is the way of the future (on most platforms):
    one example : people have argued for VM Fusion (or BootCamp) over Parallells because 'Parallels only uses one processor and VM will use 2 - or 4.. and 'BootCamp is 'Native'....
    Wrong.
    VM will use 2 - but in doing so usually slows the Mac down unnecessarily - with Parallels, The VM gets one or more processor/cores... the OS X Stream usually gets its own one or more processors/cores...
    Parallels IS 'Native'Intel.
    *BootCamp (pre-Leopard) is BETA*. (=no support... and you'll get little when it isn't because BETA almost all your problems will be with "third party products" like Windoze or Windoze Apps doing truly stoopid things.. I doubt you can get much M$ support for running windoze under BootCamp or any of the VM solutions... not that you get much M$ support anyway
    *Apple are never really going to support Windoze - why shd they: NOT their product... Vice versa.*
    Parallels is usually faster than fusion VM and often faster than booting into windoze.
    (Exceptions : fancy 3d grafix cards - just a driver issue - which is still an issue with the others anyway and is being upgraded all the time)
    Otherwise, It's often even faster than equivalent 'Native Windoze' Boxen (no I don't really know why either ... .
    Parallels and other VM products allow you to run multiple VMs: 95, 98,XP,Vista,Linux... at supa high speed and all in their own windows while OS X continues 'doing its stuff'!!
    Amazing stuff: If you have any brains these days, you really only need to buy ONE PC: a good Intel Mac, and run the best set up & optimised VM product you can find, and whatever OSs you fancy!
    For my money - ATM, that's a Mac with windoze partitions on drives and a top quality VM product like Parallels...
    (A lot of 'non technical' ppl simply don't 'get' this stuff... wikipedia can help, google reviews, benchmarks etc.. - e.g. grab a fast Flash drive.. format as HFS+ and use from OS X => as fast as possible. Format as Windoze, use on/from Mac and it may be 10 times as slow, V/V and so on....)
    With OS X, Parallels, correctly-formatted Win Drives, correctly setup and optimised you really have the best of all possible worlds. BUT: stay in the Mac world. DON'T use rubbishy windoze programs that were NOT designed to work in a Virtualised environment (MacDrive etc etc) or you will get probs (use TCP/IP Networking or Shared folders etc instead - not that you really need much of anything like MacDrive, anyway the Mac & VM can read and write all that...)
    My ('post College') Kids all switched to Macs set up this way.
    They only ever use BottCamp for some games.
    They do have Parallels but rarely need to use any Windoze stuff anyway.. - oh and 'They are SO Cool" and "we love them.."
    They'll never go back (sell yr M$oft shares short
    Best of luck.
