SAP Shutdown Necessary During Oracle Backup via BRBACKUP ?
Hi,
Is it necessary to shutdown SAP before backing up the Oracle database via BRBACKUP ?
The BRBACKUP will run cold db backup.
What's the windows script to shutdown & startup SAP v6 ?
TIA !
DLHi Desmond,
That is depends upon the backup type you are selecting.
If you are going to take a cold backup brbackup will shutdowns the database and takes backup.
If you are going for a online backup it will take backup without sutting down database.
And here no need to shutdown database manually, brbackup shutdowns database and takes backup.
I didn't understand your second query, what is the script?

Hi Experts,
I have installed SAP BC 4.7 (both server and developer) and started the server (installation done with <sid>adm user). The problem I am facing is in configuration. There is no SAP option under Adapters because of which I am unable to configure ABAP stack here. Please help in resolving this.

Edited by: Chandra Vikash on Oct 11, 2011 1:46 PMHello gaurav,
I have tried re-installing.
I am able to open the web-admin and also all the links except the ones in the adapters section.
I have checked the installation document, adapter guide for BC 4.8 but i couldnt find anything useful.
I was just wondering if it has got anything to do with the OS.
lemme know if you have come across anything like this.
thanks for the help.

Dear All,
I am newbie to SAP BASIS. All my past experience is with Java and J2EE technologies. In last 6 month I learn the following.
Installing SAP IDES.
Setting Up SAP GUI
User Administration.
Role Maintainance.
Transport.
SAP shutdown and start.
Client Administration.
My company is planning to offer me SAP BASIS course but I want to know that my current progress is good or not.
I am bit confuse about this new carreer but feel good to have less workload and more respect. As a java developer I have to be always creative and the updates in programming industry is really 1 after another.
I like to know my negative points in term of slow learning or skipping any important area. And your suggestions to improve it.
Thanks & Regards
Syed SaifuddinSAP basis is more administrative and less creative than J2EE developer. Mostly you only need to find the right manual and do not have to "create" something. Maybe you would be interested in SolMan? Regards, Otto

Mistake = Learn = Mistake
Hi,
As they said "People learn from their Mistakes" some says "People learn from others mistakes" anyway I'm here to present some of my silly mistakes right from the start of my BASIS career as there are lots of but I try to bring those which are still a nightmare..
-) I learned SAP on windows box when it comes to shutdown the SAP system (with os) I took remote of the server and found no MMC window is running "scrached my head" and shutdown PRD server without stopping MMC, DB & logging off users nightmare for my senior ; and their I learned how to stop SAP
-) Shutdown SAP 4.6c to take offline backup without removing cluster after completion started system now the next day the morning begin with alert morning - learned to freeze / unfreeze cluster before and after offline backup
-) Applied kernel without taking backup - learn to take backup
-) Done some of post system copy tasks on PRD instead QAS - learned to check the current working screen
-) Started CI many times without starting ASCS & looking for other possible issue : learned to start 1st ASCS
I think we all have done some mistake and we learn, remembered it try to put some of your valuable mistakes to learn the mistakes Happy learning mistakes..
Regards,
Edited by: BAIGSA on Nov 11, 2010 4:38 PMApplied a non-unicode kernel to a portal (NW java is always unicode). The funny thing was, the portal was still running for six months or so, because there was a correct kernel in DIR_EXECUTABLE...
Then while applying the new supp stack, i wondered why JSPM suddenly asked for the non-unicode kernel. I had to open a OSS message. When they asked why there was a non-unicode kernel, i already started to write a harsh answer, that there is only unicode on NW java. Luckily i double checked...
By the way, there is this legendary thread in the hp support forums: [greatest blunders|http://forums.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=186009], obvioulsy rm -r is one of the top mistakes in the unix world. And there is no recycle bin...
So always backup (and test your restores)!
Good luck, Michael -
Split_Mirror Offline Backup
Hi Guys,
we are performing our backups with the brbackup tool and the online_split command. Everything is working fine.
But we have some problems with the offline backup. Sometimes the DB is not shutting down because of some active SAP processe and the backup gets a "timeout".
Possible workaround:
shutdown sap
shutdown DB
startup db
startup sap
start offline_split backup immediatly
does anyone have any other idea how to skript these backup???
Thank you very much
TimmHi Timm,
If you shutdown SAP manually and then start the Offline split backup from brtools.
Does it works
Thanks

Upgradation of 3.1 i to 4.6c and 4.7
Can any body please send the relevant information on Upgradation of 3.1 i to 4.6c and 4.7. And please tell what are all thing we can do in this process and what sort of obstacles we may face in this process
Hi,
I am sorry. I am sending you a long file since your question was very general.
Guidelines / Checklist for Upgrade
Before Upgrade
1. Have the following information readily available to estimate and assess the effort and timelines :
a. Hardware Upgrade plans (if any)
b. No of Application servers
c. Add-ons Installed and their respective version
d. No of custom developed objects like reports, Module Pools, BDC etc
e. % of changes to Standard SAP repository Objects
f. PC configuration for end users
2. Complete hardware should be available before upgrade as planned.
3. Ensure hardware compatibility with target SAP R/3 Release in terms of performance & database storage capacity. A minimum storage of around 50-75 GB will be required for dump of Upgrade CDs (includes extra Tablespace)
4. Ensure that database / OS Upgrade hardware patches are readily available, if the same has to be updated.
5. Ensure O/s level compatibility for 64 bit for Non windows based O/s. For example UNIX etc.
6. Final System landscape should be finalized before the start of the Upgrade. A minimum of three servers are required for any upgrade, one server will the current production server, One server for test upgrade and one server to restore the old production server backup just before go-live.
7. The test upgrade server should have the configuration equivalent to current production server, to get a proper estimate of times lines and Critical downtime
8. Ensure that all SAP software CDs are available and check for their usability
9. Have all the support packages readily available and apply highest level of support packs available in each of the respective area to minimize the problems after the upgrade.
10. Ensure that all SAP perquisites have been taken care before the trigger of upgrade.
11. Make sure that all SAP notes, which details and describes the activities required to be carried out in order to avoid data loss and solution to known problems are available in the repository and all the activities have been carried out as per those notes. For example to avoid loss of customizing of movement types refer to note no : ???
12. If any add on like CIN, Cable Solution has been installed, please make sure that you search SAP notes for conversion / migration guides. These migration guides are very useful to determine the customizing changes to be made and also for converting old data to new tables and fields
13. Analyze the SAP customizing, for any specific customizing / application , which generally is not part of a standard Normal R/3 customizing / application (for example Variant Configuration). Collect all notes related to such customizing if any before upgrade activities to avoid any surprises. The same is true where the skill set of the consultant is not up to standards required in a particular area.
14. A list of ABAP programs developed should be made available before the upgrade. The list should also classify the programs in terms of their criticality. A core team member should be assigned to each critical program for testing and sign off
15. OSS connectivity is a must. It is preferred to have OSS connectivity thru SAP Front end using OSS1 transaction instead of internet based OSS connectivity
16. The latest SAP GUI version required to run the upgraded SAP version should be installed on the Users PC before the start of upgrade process.
17. If possible, find out the Holiday schedule for the time frame of the upgrade project. This is required to find dates for PRD Go live so as to ensure that SAP shutdown is planned during holidays, therefore minimizing the impact of such shutdown.
18. If a Go-live date is set prior to the upgrade then work back words to decide about the availability of test server, involvement of functional Team, user training etc.
Upgrade Test server
1. Use SAP upgrade tools like ASU. Refer to note no: 623723. This will provide readily available solutions for known problems.
2. Latest offline O/S level backup should be restored to the Test upgrade Server prior to Upgrade
3. If possible SAP support packs should be applied as part of Upgrade process.
4. Process should be put in place to record and monitor the changes made to ABAP and customizing and transported to production during upgrade of Test server.
5. Make sure that for Change requests related to upgrade is captured under a Project. This is required specifically for ABAP request. This also helps to avoid the confusion related to dependencies at the time of release and import into PRD system.
6. All the issues faced during upgrade should be properly documented. A proper issue log should be maintained describing the problems and the resolution. This will serve has a reference for problems faced after go-live.
7. All the test scenarios / test results should be documented along with the hardcopies of Layout and critical documents. This will serve as a base for user sign off.
8. For problems faced while testing, search for SAP Notes for the resolution of the same. As it has been observed that for 90% of the problems there is a Note available in the SAP Repository
9. Please use following methodology to find relevant SAP notes
a. If an error message is displayed the put the Message <Message Class> <Message ID> in the search field and sort the messages by date to get the latest notes.
b. If a note reference is given in the source code where error has occurred check for related notes and latest version of the note
c. Enter the Program name or Transaction code related to the error to get all the notes related to it.
d. In case ABAP Dump enter the actual error like SQL_DUPREC_INSERT_ARRAY and program name
e. Sometimes titles of the SAP note are misleading, so please make sure that you check all the notes.
f. Most of the Notes released prior the release date of last applied patch may be not be relevant, but sometime there are notes available which are release independent.
10. Plan for the user trainings should be finalized as soon as first level testing is over. The training should cover New GUI features and Delta training for transactions and new transactions if any.
11. If possible follow Train the Trainer approach to speed up the training. This also ensures that responsibility of training lies with the client and not with us
12. A feedback form must be filled by the users / Core team members for the training conducted.
13. Cutover plan for Pre-Go live and after go-live should be prepared for smooth go live and a proper recording of the backlog.
14. Finalize the Go-live dates with the help of the TOP MANAGEMENT once 90% of the testing is completed. Make sure that TOP MANAGEMENT is involved in issuing notifications to the users with regards to Non-availability of the SAP and activities required to be carried out before and after such period.
PRD Upgrade
1. Take an offline backup on the cutoff date. Make sure that backup copy is a working one. To ensure this restore the backup once. This will serve as fallback in case of upgrade failure. This will increase the minimum shutdown time by approximate 8-9 Hours.
2. A user with only display rights should be available during shutdown for OLD PRD system. This provides data traceability to the users.
3. Import the Transport requests, once the Post processing activities are over
4. Schedule SGEN for database Generation after the import of Transport requests. Make sure that enough archiving and Table space is available for ICNV and SGEN.
5. Run conversion programs if any required.
6. Release the system to functional consultant for Pre-Go Live test. Make sure that no one saves any transactions in PRD server
7. Once Functional test is over by functional team, release the system to those users only whose work has been affected during the shutdown.
8. For errors reported in PRD system, simulate the scenario first in Test upgrade server. If the same scenario can be simulated in Test server then find out a solution for the same. Otherwise check for missing customizing and master data errors.
9. Once backlog of shutdown period is completed, release the system to other users.

Oracle - Move datafiles to a new filesystem
Hi,
We have an ERP system running on HP-UX with Oracle database.
To stick with SAP recommendation, the filesystems holding the datafiles should have a blocksize of 8192K. We have 5 filesystem of 2 TB for the datafiles of the production system, and 3 have a blocksize of 1024k instead of 8192k.
The safest strategy would be to:
- Stop SAP and DB
- Copy the datafiles of these 3 filesystems to 3 new filesystem with a blocksize of 8192K
- Adapt the mount points
- Restart the DB and SAP
The problem with this strategy is that it is very time consuming, and will need a long downtime to complete it.
We have another strategy in mind:
- Putting the database in backup mode
- Copying all the datafiles (for the 5 filesystems) to new filesystems
- Putting the database back in normal mode
- Stopping SAP and the DB
- Changing the mounting points to the new filesystems
- Starting up the database and recover it (applying all the logs)
- Starting SAP
This should help us reducing the downtime.
Can you advise if it is a valid strategy ? Do you have any other idea on how we could proceed ?
Thanks in advance for your help :-)
AntoineHi Antoine,
well from a technical point of view this is valid, but to be honest it is slow as well and it includes many manual error-prone activities. Nowadays there is no reason for not using RMAN
The fastest and safest method (in my opinion) would be the following:
Create the 3 new file systems
Perform full image copy backup of corresponding data files to that file system
Perform incremental backups (with block change tracking) and apply them to the corresponding image file copies (Rolling Forward Image Copy Backups)
Perform the last incremental backup (with block change tracking) and apply it right before shutdown of SAP
Shutdown SAP
Use RMAN to switch to data file copy (in new file system)
Use RMAN to recover data files, which should take only a few seconds to minutes depending on the load between step 4 and 5.
Start SAP

TRIALSP11 Application server Shutdown at SAP LOGON
This is my first adventure with SAP or ABAP..
1. I installed and followed the SAPNW2004sABAPTrialSP11 install instructions.
2. The installation instructions went fine from the
/people/manfred.lutz/blog/2007/03/16/new-blog-series-abap-trial-version-for-newbies
3. SAMMMC has MSG_SERVER.exe and DISP_WORK.EXE both green when I stared the SAP Logon.
4. After I start the SAP the waiting for response shows up.
5. SAP GUI comes up with a error saying application server shutdown.
6. my disp+work.exe goes to stopped state.
7. Error message says componet is 710, version 10, return code -17, counter 1.
The Log is attached. Any help is rewarded.

Best Regards,
Erick ILarrazaHi Deepak,
Thanks a lot for your reply, in this case the problem was with the Dialog Instance (Only SAP apps, not Oracle).
We shutdown the instance with the Microsoft SAP Management Console (right button -> Stop).
In general to shutdown the SAP System we first:
1. Shutdown The Dialog Instance. (SAP Management Console)
2. Shutdown The Central Instance. (SAP Management Console)
3. Shutdown Oracle (BR*Tools).
4. Stop SAP and Oracle Services.
Maybe is more a problem of Windows Memory Management.....
Best Regards,
Erick ILarraza -
Automatic shutdown of SAP Instance after installation of Dialog Instance
Hi all,
We've upgraded our system from SAP4.6C to ECC6.0 running on Win2003 64 bits Oracle 10g.
After upgrade, we installed Dialog instance (this dialog instance is running outside MS cluster) and it is running on Microsoft cluster. When we try to start up SAP dialog instance, the system is started but it automatically shuts down again.

Does anybody has a solution for this problem?
Thank you.Hi all again,
I had the same problem and found a solution for it.
I made two steps to start the dialog instance successful. First I modified the NLS_LANG setting in the registry and enviroment (only if necessary). Second, I fetched the last Oracle Instant Client <b>OCL10264.sar</b> from SAP Net and extract the file to <b>E:\usr\sap\PDV\SYS\exe\nuc\NTAMD64</b> (This directory was created through the Installer. The Kernel lies under <b>E:\usr\sap\PDV\D20\exe</b>)
Now I changed the variable <b>DIR_CLIENT_ORAHOME = $(DIR_EXECUTABLE)</b> to
<b>DIR_CLIENT_ORAHOME = E:\usr\sap\PDV\SYS\exe\nuc\NTAMD64</b> in the Instance Profile of the new Dialog Instance. So the Kernel knows that he has to use the Oracle Instance Client and the profilevariable says where he found it.
After these modifications the Dialog Instance starts with success.
With kind regards

How to check Server Shutdown and Startup History in SAP
Hi guru's . One of the background job failed on saturday. And i want check the duration and the history when the server shutdown and startup. I can check the server startup time at ST02 t-code. But i want to check the entire history of server shut down. Please guide me through. Thanks.
Dear Ram,
You can see the System logs in SM21 . Background job failure can be viewed in SM37 .
As said before go through \usr\sap\TST\DVEBMGS00\work directory and see the logs. Files like dev_disp , dev_ms ,dev_rfc.trc ,stderr1,stderr2,stderr3,stderr4 will have the log information . These files will have the information after the last system start .
Anyway if want to see the old logs before server shutdown , see the old logs in old files like dev_disp.old,dev_ms.old .

ECATT Adding new Line in VL02N shutdown the SAPGUI recording (and SAP too!)
Hello dear eCATT players,
I'm trying to automate the following test case:
- <b>add a line to an existing outbound delivery with VL02N transaction.</b>
I use <b>SAPGUI</b> recording. I do not do any scrolling at all , i use add item icon.
and <b>all the SAP sessions</b> (recorded or not recorded, even non eCATT related mode) <b>are randomly shutdown</b> .
By randomly i mean :
- sometimes i'm able to enter Material reference only
- sometimes i'm able to enter Material, QTY,PCE only
- sometimes i'm able to enter the whole line,
press save and it crashes during the saving.
<b>Do you guys have any input on such issue?</b>
I cannot provide log since it's a complete shutdown without dump.
I'm using :
Wingui 6400 Rev 2 Patch Level 0 minor version 157 as client
on a SAP Basis 6400 level 00017 as server.Hello All,
