Satellite A300 - Vista won't load, computer won't start

Satellite A300
Model Number: PSAGCA-02W010
Vista will not load; have tried start up repair; system restore and starting in safe mode, none of these will work. I get the error "Error 0x80070570: The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable."
I don't know what I have done with my recovery CD; or if I even got any with my purchase (from Harvey Norman).
Please advise what can be done.

Hey,
> I don't know what I have done with my recovery CD; or if I even got any with my purchase (from Harvey Norman).
Normally you dont get any recovery disk with the notebook because you have to create it yourself using Toshiba recovery disk but this is mentioned in user manual. Probably you have already done this and you can find the recovery disks again. ;)
If not you have to follow the instructions posted by Andrej: You have to start HDD recovery feature to get rid of this. Enter the advanced boot menu of Windows where you can choose to start in Windows in safe mode, etc. and select Repair my computer. Vista will load some files and on new window you can choose the Toshiba HDD recovery feature.

  • My computer won't load pass the grey start up screen

MacBook pro won't load pass the grey start up screen?

Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
The first step in dealing with a boot failure is to secure your data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since your last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
         a. Boot into the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
    b. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    c. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
Sometimes a boot failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
    Step 3
If there's a built-in optical drive, a disc may be stuck in it. Follow these instructions to eject it.
    Step 4
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to boot, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can boot now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
If you've booted from an external storage device, make sure that your internal boot volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
    Step 5
Boot in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you boot in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, your boot volume is corrupt and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to Step 5.
If you can boot and log in now, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the boot process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
    Step 6
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select your startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then reboot as usual.
    Step 7
Reinstall the OS. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
    Step 8
Repeat Step 6, but this time erase the boot volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer your data from a Time Machine or other backup.
    Step 9
This step applies only to older Macs (not current models) that have a logic-board ("PRAM") battery. Both desktop and portable Macs used to have such a battery. The logic-board battery is separate from the main battery of a portable. A dead logic-board battery can cause a boot failure. Typically the boot failure will be preceded by loss of the startup disk and system clock settings. See the user manual for replacement instructions. You may have to take the machine to a service provider to have the battery replaced.
    Step 10
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. If you can't get to an Apple Store, go to another authorized service provider.

  • Safari won't load; Autoupdate won't run

I've been having trouble with Safari since Christmas. It won't load most web pages (Google, for example). i've tried following the instructions on some of the previous posts, without any success. I've even reloaded the operating system. In addition to the Safari problem, autoupdate won't work for any of my software. I keep getting an error message that I'm not connected to the internet, but when I run the diagnostics, everything checks out. I don't have these problems when I use dial-up service, only with DSL, but it's not the line nor my service provider. A Windows machine works perfectly on the same cable. I've tried the following:
    -clearing cache and history
    -restarting modem and iBook
-clearing duplicate fonts from font book
-reloading 10.4.8 and all the software
-using Safari from a new test account
    -trashing the icons folder
-moving the com.apple.safari.plist file onto the desk top and restarting Safari
Your assistance would be much appreciated! (And your patience - I'm not very Mac literate yet)

    Hi again,
Did you run disk permissions repair after your updates if not do so now.
If you are not sure how see Travis A.'s Regular Maintenance/General Troubleshooting
Okay, so you connect via Ethernet, did you enter, or do you already have DNS #s already entered, in your settings you said only that the ISP confirmed your settings.
Get the Dns #s from your ISP I can not find them on the portforward web-site.
However these: ORSC Public Access DNS Nameservers (Anyone can use these, no matter what ISP)
    199.166.24.253
    199.166.27.253
    199.166.28.10
    199.166.29.3
    199.166.31.3
    195.117.6.25
    204.57.55.100
Enter the DNS #s in the Network and in the Airport admin utility app found in Utilities (I think it is the Internet tab > & click on the Update button.
See this document for more Quick Assist
Quit Software Updater if it is not:
    In Home~/Library/Preferences/ com.apple.Software Update.plist
move the file to the trash.
Do a restart of your computer.
So you know, auto-updating is best disabled since disk permissions repairs should be run prior [ some disagree on the prior I am not one of them]
& after all apple updates see the macmap site I linked you to in my other post.
As for Web archives the best way to save them is as a pdf, under the
"File"menu Print-> when that drops down Save as PDF, that has proved to be more reliable for me.

  • Completely lost - programs won't load, others won't operate properly

I'm at my wits end here guys and I have no idea what to do. I've tried everything I could think of short of reinstalling the entire operating system.
I've tried repairing the boot up drive with the install CD on startup, but after several attempts it says it repairs it but still needs to be repaired again.
    Anyway, here's my list of problems;
    - Flickr Uploadr either crashes before opening, or opens for 5 seconds then closes. Despite several uninstalls and reinstalls it won't work.
    - Firefox web browser won't even load; crashes instantly and asks me to send error report.
    - Safari will load, however it won't load any web pages. It sits on an empty page and continuously says "Loading.." but nothing ever comes up.
    - MSN Messenger loaded and crashed right away
    - Adium loads but won't function properly; contact lists won't open, crashes when trying to do something with it.
Any more information needed please ask, I'm not sure what else to tell.
Please help me! Luckily I was able to get FLOCK up and running... so far so good. knock on wood...
    Thanks

That's just it, I haven't added anything, or done anything differently... with the internet.
I was running some operations with OnyX trying to repair permissions and hopefully fix the Flickr Uploadr program (Safari was still working properly at this point) then my computer put the monitor to sleep, and when I tried to wake it only the mouse would show up on the black screen. The password enter screen didn't show up to unlock the computer. I had to hard-shut down the computer in order to use it.
Also, I just foolishly realized that I've been using the original disk with OS Jaguar to repair the computer.. so I found my Tiger disk and ran disk utility on start up with that. It seemed to run differently and gave me a different result. This time I wrote it down:
    (RED) Invalid volume file count
(BLK) (It should be 483446 instead of 483450)
    (BLK) Checking extended attributes file.
(RED) Reserved fields in the catalog record have incorrect data
    (BLK) Checking volume bitmap.
    (BLK) Checking volume information.
    (GRN) Repairing Volume.
(RED) The volume Macintosh HD could not be repaired.
(RED) *ERROR: The Underlying task reported failure on exit*
    (BLK) *1 HFS Volume checked*
(RED) *1 volume could not be repaired because of an error*
(BLK) *Repair attempted on 1 volume*
(RED) *1 volume could not be repaired*
That's the message in the main window... but when it finishes a pop-up message appears where the only clickable option is OK:
    First Aid Failed
Disk Utility stopped repairing "Macintosh HD"
because the following error was encountered:
The underlying task reported failure on exit
Also, I should note that the same failure message, or early stopped message appears when verifying as well. Also happens when trying to repair the 2nd internal HDD that does not have a start up system, but is only used to store additional personal files.

  • Battery won't charge, computer won't turn on

My battery won't charge, even though the power adapter light is on as if charging. I've tried using other power dapaters of the same model, with the same results; no charge. Now the battery is dead and the computer won't turn on. Should I just get a new battery?

I tried resetting the PMU, before the battery totally ran out. Now I'm sure the battery is totally dead, but not sure if it will charge once I get a new battery. Looking at other postings, it sounds like the problem could be with the logic board.

  • Won't load, computer does nothing

well, from reading some posts here it sounds like the shuffle has some major issues...maybe not representative of all shuffle owners, but still, this is a lot of problems for a product that's supposed to make life easier/more enjoyable.
anyway, I loaded the iPod software before inserting ipod, like is said in the instructions. the program said it installed successfully, but never said anything about connecting iPod. I went ahead and connected the shuffle and turned it on. computer didn't do anything...no messages about new device detected and no icon for the ipod on the desktop. Opened itunes...I was running 4.7 at the time. clicked on preferences-ipod...it said no ipod connected. I know for certain it was connected as it had fully charged by this point.
So, downloaded itunes 5. still nothing. downloaded latest ipod updater, still nothing. software loads successfully, restarts the computer, but never any message about ipod being detected, no icon, and no recognition of ipod by finder or itunes. I'm going to try the cable extension idea tonight, but I am pretty sure the shuffle was fully connected.
I am running an eMac with OS X 10.2.8, but I just got tiger last night and plan to install it tonight. Will that make things better or worse? I don't know. I first tried plugging in to the usb ports on the keyboard, but after reading some posts here found that I would need to use the high powered usb port on the body of the actual eMac. I think it's fully connected, but the cable will tell me that for sure tonight.
Should a simple device like this be so complicated? I am so frustrated right now I feel like throwing the stupid thing away. I got it free for winning a contest so returning it is not an option. Lame.
Any help/advice welcome and appreciated. I know lots of people are having similar problems.

thanks everyone. I figured out my problem. Picked up a usb port extender from radio shack for 8 bucks and it helped the iPod link up. everything works now.

  • Firefox won't load when using desktop/start menu icons but loads when starting off links in emails

When I try to start Firefox by the start menu, desktop or any other icon Firefox opens but then freezes and won't respond at all.
If I go to an email and then click on a link than Firefox will open and then load as normal and I can then go about using Firefox.
This has only be happening for the last few days and I have tried all the trouble shots and nothing has changed.

I Have this problem too. won't even start when dbl click the .exe file directly either. but a link in another app or email works fine. I have tried all the stuff here and uninstalled and reinstalled countless times. Using new profile, disabling Norton firewall and antivirus for the installs, only thing that worked was going back to v3.6. and a real early thunderbird too (it was also crashing on starting) Was fine for about three weeks then updated them, The went in stages not all at once and was fine till the newest group of versions. then went back to crashing. this time backgrading did not work. I installed the newest versions Firefox & Thunderbird many more times and by accident found that fresh after a install could open TB first and click a link in a email and FF started ok.
but still will not start from desktop or windows explorer
It is ridiculous to have to open another app to click on a link you don't want to get to where you do want. What is the difference in the links.
    ks
also would not start in safe mode or a completely new install.
V.17.0 is the FF thats installed now and at least works as long as I don't try to open it
from desktop or windows explorer, more than a little nervous about going to v.20.

    Hi Everybody
I have a big problem with Toshiba a300. Windows Vista doesnt's starts.
    Shows only menu with 2 options: first "fix the system" - when I choose this option 10 s later I see messeage: click OK to turn off the computer;
when I choose second option my laptop restart everytime.
I have tried after turn on computer to press f8, but all option from this menu do NOT fix the problem.
I have no CV/DVD for my computer.
After first starts I don't burn DVD with backup.
I really don't now how I can install system with recovery patriction. What softwere I need and how I must do it?
    Thanks for help

    Hi
The Sat A300 and other newer notebook models are equipped with the HDD Recovery option. This HDD recovery should allow you to recover the notebook without the usage of any disks.
In order to start the HDD recovery procedure you will have to press F8. Then choose the first option called Repair my Computer. Then new window will appear and there you have to choose Toshiba HDD recovery. Thats all.
But if this procedure wouldnt work (no matter why) then you will have to use the Toshiba Recovery disk. If you didnt create a recovery disk firstly and the notebook will not boot up then you will need to buy a Recovery disk from this page:

  • Laptop won't load OS, won't enter BIOS/Boot Menu.

I recently installed Windows 7 Professional on my Compaq CQ56 PC, on a 260Gig HHD partition. I then installed Opensuse linux on the remainind 60Gig. However half way through installation my PC ran out of power and dhut down. I tried booting and changing the Boot Device menu, so that I complete installation, but it won't allow me to go into the boot menu (simply stops on the compaq start screen - fan and cd-rom will be working.) Is there a way for me to rectify this without losing my data?

It sounds as if you were never warned to always do an OS installation or anything that has to do with partitioning while on external power.
Please identify your notebook with more than just the model type. You have given an incomplete picture of your hardware configuration while reporting an extreme hardware/firmware issue. IT would help to remove the battery and take a look at the service tag. Please post the p/n  (product number) here in your thread
There are a few things to try.
Remove the hard disk. Connect the power adapter and press the power button. Does the BIOS screen appear and warn that it can not find a bootable disk?
If it does not, then try a hard reset.
Try a hard reset as follows:
    1) Remove the battery and unplug the DC power adapter.
    2) Press and hold the power button for more than fifteen seconds.
    3) Plug in the DC power adapter (leave the battery out for now)
    4) Press the power button
Please post your positive or negative results here in your thread.
You can put the hard disk in an external housing and connect it to another PC to  try torecover your data. What you will see will depend on the operating system of the PC that you use for data recovery.

I am trying to load the update for iTunes but it isn't working.  I go to Help --> Check for update and I get a message that an update is found.  I click on Install Update and nothing happens.  I've tried rebooting, running iTunes as an administrator and even loading windows updates.  Nothing works.  I need to update iTunes so that I can load the updates on my iPhone.
    Please help.

With that one, try updating using an iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe) downloaded from the Apple website:

I just bought my ipod nano today. At first everything was ok and it was charging while I set up itunes. Then i had to take a phone call and my laptop went on standby.. now my computer wont recognise my ipod at all, and the ipod isn't charging. But the ipod lights up when i plug it into the computer so obviously it recognises the computer. I even tried going into control panel and changing the usb settings but it didn't work! Is the problem with my ipod, the usb connection or my computer?? HELP!!!

    Have you tried resetting the iPod while it's connected? This will often get it to show up. If not, are you on Windows or Mac? Have you seen this;

I just got a used iPod in the mail yesterday... When I try to charge it using a USB drive or a wall charger, it appears as if nothing happens. When I have it plugged into my USB drive, my computer doesn't recognize anything...
I've tried using the "reset" feature, and every now and then it gets the Apple logo to come up, but then seems to freeze at that point. A few times it's come up with the "Use iTunes to restore" message after the Apple logo, but then seems to freeze there as well. I'll plug it into my USB drive, but again nothing is recognized by my computer...

    I should add that it's a 5th Generation 30GB Video iPod
