Satellite U840-110 - Windows 7 doesn't start - looped boot

Hi,
I have been using a Satellite U840 - 110 laptop since Dec 2012 on a Windows 7 Home Premium operating system. Recently, the laptop was left on standby for a couple of days. When I tried to start the computer, it initially froze. So I forced reboot by pressing the on/off button. After repeating this for a couple of times, it first showed a blue screen. After which when the computer was restarted, it showed a black screen with the following message
'Windows Error Recovery
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.
Launch Startup Repair or
Start windows normally'
I have tried both these options a few times and everytime at the end of the process, it would come back to these same screen. I have also tried to press F8 and used Advanced Boot Options and tried 'last know good configuration'.
None of it seems to work and I have not been able to load Windows. I have not got any backup of my data and may end up losing a lot of vital information.
Is there anyway I can sort out the problem and get the computer to work again?
Is there any way to retrieve the data from the hard disk.
Thanks in advance for the help!

Is there any way to retrieve the data from the hard disk.
You can remove the HDD from the notebook and could connect it to another computer using USB-to-SATA caddy.
After that you could insert the HDD into the notebook again and could try to perform the Toshiba HDD recovery.

  • Windows service doesn't start at boot

When our Xserve starts up, the Windows service does not start.
    I've got SMBSERVER=-YES- in /etc/hostconfig.
Once the xserve is running, clicking on the Start Service button for Windows in Server Admin starts the service with no problems. Once it's running, it's fine. The server has no other problems that I'm aware of.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have exactly the same problem. Did you ever find a solution?

  • Satellite U840-10N - Windows Installation Can't See Any Drive

Hi all, this is my first post thus I hope I have choosen the right place to post in.
I've just bought a new Toshiba Satellite u840-10n ultrabook. It has built-in WIndows 7 Home Premium 320GB HHD + 32GB SSD.
Even if I prefer Linux, i need Windows because of Microsoft Visual Studio. I've downloaded Visual Studio(legally throught dreamspark.com) but it looks like it has some problems. In particular I cannot create any project.
After searching the web a lot for this problem, I've decided to try to reinstall Windows, hoping this will solve the issue, and here is the point.
Windows 7 installation process doesn't find any drive. I've looked throught the web a lot to solve even this problem, without figuring it out.
I've read that many other people had the same problem. I've tried different ways and I'm about to throw the laptop out of the window.
Is there anybody how can help me?
    Cheers,
    Marco Galassi

    Hi macogala
Could you solve the problem installing the SATA driver?
As far as I know the Windows 7 system contains already an SATA driver so usually an additional SATA driver should not be an essential part. But try it out.
I solve my HDD issue by formatting the HDD again.
I create an bootable USB flash memory stick using *Gparted* freeware tool.
This partitions tool helped me to format the HDD and to create new partition in order to install Win 7.
By the way: in BIOS you should disable the +secure boot+ and should change from +UEFI to CSM mode.+

  • Satellite U840 - clean Windows 7 installation

My U840-113 had a hard drive failure, and I did not make any backups of the system image.
I've installed a new hard drive (no problems), but am going crazy trying to get Windows 7 to reinstall.
    Here is what has happened....
-Installed Windows 7 (service Pack 1) via external CD/DVD, accidentally installed 32 bit version. No problem, but as I began to wade through finding all the drivers from the Toshiba website, I noticed some 32 bit options were missing.
-Tried to install 64 bit version - Note, from my original Windows 7 release, so prior to service Pack 1)
-Initially got error messaging indicating that CD/DVD drivers were required to continue. Really?
-After researching, downloaded drivers to a CD to use as needed. Did not get this message again as I moved the CD/DVD to a different USB port (one which had previously given this message!)
-Got though the entire installation, and I get a "hardware not compatible" message. What?!?!?!
    -Tried again, same message.
-Removed the Raid on the SSD drive...no more Raids on anything!
    -Tried again, same message.
So I'm pretty sure this issue has to do with the Raid drivers.
What exactly is the "trick" to do a fresh install of Windows 7 64 bit on this machine!??!?!?!!?!
I'm going to see if I can get a 64 bit Service Pack 1 version (on USB!) to try for my next attempt.
I left this PC at work, so that I wouldn't stay up all night trying to get this to work.
    Thank you!

I have checked specification for your notebook and it was delivered with preinstalled Win7 64bit Home Premium so I recommend you to install Win7 64bit again. It is fully supported and all necessary drivers, tools and utilities you can find and download from Toshiba download page - http://www.toshiba.eu/innovation/download_drivers_bios.jsp
Please note you need drivers for Satellite U840 PSU4SE.
There you can also download RAID driver that you must load before you start Win7 installation. I presume without this driver HDD will not be visible. Download it and save it on USB stick.
Generally speaking Win7 installation on this machine should not be some big deal. I have done it on U940 without any problem.
When external ODD is connected start notebook and press F12. Choose CD/DVD as first bootable device and confirm it with enter. I presume you use original Microsoft Win7 installation disc, right?
Disc should be read and installation should start. When you will see that disc drive is not recognized load SATA/RAID driver and continue with installation. Create partition C and choose it as place for OS installation. I cannot imagine you will have some problems with it. On my machine it worked perfectly.
When Win7 is fully installed you must start with drivers, tools and utilities installation. All stuf install as follow:
    Windows 7 Win7 SP1
    Intel Chipset SW Installation Utility
    Intel Management Engine Interface
    Intel Display Driver
    AMD Display Driver
    Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver
    Synaptics Touch Pad Driver
    Intel USB3.0 Driver
    IRSTCreator
    Alcor Micro Card Reader
    Intel Rapid Start Technology Software
    Conexant Audio Driver
    SRS Premium Sound
    LAN Driver
    Wireless LAN Driver
    Realtek Bluetooth Filter Driver Package
    Intel Wireless Display
    Bluetooth Monitor
Bluetooth Stack for Windows by Toshiba
    TOSHIBA Value Added Package
    TOSHIBA Web Camera Application
    PatchFiles PCIIDEREG-1.2
    PatchFiles TosVolRegulator_1.1
I hope everything will e OK.

  • Satellite L650D-10J - Windows 7 won't start

    Hi,
    I have a Toshiba Satellite L650D-10J, Windows 7 64Bit, 4GB RAM and it won't start Windows 7. It starts and then you see Toshiba logo startup etc. and then it goes to black and it loads up Windows Bootmanager with the following message ;
+A problem to your computer occurred while communicating with a device that is connected.+
+This error may be caused by an external storage device such as an external USB drive, the device while in use, or damaged hardware such as a hard disk or CD-ROM drive disconnect that is damaged. Make sure any removable storage is properly connected and then restart your computer.+
+contact the hardware manufacturer if you still see this error.+
    +Status: 0xc00000e9+
    +Information: An unexpected I / O error occurred.+
(it was translated out of dutch so there are some sentences that aren't correct.)
I've tried downloading a Windows 7 recovery disc, burnt it on DVD. It works I'll get to choose to set it back when it was working correct (I get an error) or use a Windows 7 from disc (doesn't work). And if I start in safe mode I can see that it stops and freezes at file; disk.sys
    Anyone an idea?
    Greetings,

    Hello
And have you connected external USB device as the error message says? If yes remove all USB devices and try to start your notebook again.
Fact is if you cant start in safe mode your OS is muddled up and the only option to get rid of this is reinstalling Windows.
Are you using the preinstalled Windows 7 version from Toshiba? If yes go into advanced boot menu of Windows pressing F8 key where you can select safe mode, etc. and choose Repair my computer option. Then select Toshiba HDD recovery and factory settings will be restored. Also check this article about HDD recovery:
    http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/HTD1303440001R01.htm
If HDD recovery doesnt work you need an original Toshiba recovery disk. If you didnt create this disk just order a new one here:

  • MacBook Pro, randomly Windows 7 doesn't start and screen goes blank

Hi, I installed Windows 7 (Ultimate 64-bit) using the BootCamp on my MacBook Pro (MBP) i7, mid 2010. Installation was successful without any issues. This is my first Mac and, for now, I primarily use Windows on my MBP. The problem: After selecting Windows OS, randomly, Windows doesn't start and the screen goes blank. When this happens, most of the time I have to press the power button twice and press the Option key again to restart in Windows. Sometimes I have to hold down power button for several seconds to turn off MBP, then power it back on to start over. Windows 7 seems to restart on second try every time.
I can tell when the screen will go blank and Windows will not start, when the blinking cursor does not appear on upper left corner of the screen. Also, I enabled Windows OS Boot Log and nothing displays when this happens.
I took in my MBP, twice, to local Apple store Genius Bar and I was told that it was a Windows problem and I must purchase AppleCare Protection Plan to get help resolving the blank screen. It was explained to me that AppleCare had Windows experts who can help with resolving the issue. Therefore I purchased the AppleCare Protection Plan and spoke to AppleCare directly and still no resolution.
Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

There is a forum specifically for Boot Camp, this is a general MBP forum and most of us don't use Boot Camp or Windows. The link to that forum is:
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=237
Apple does support Boot Camp however if your problem is with Windows Apple does not support a Microsoft product. You would need to contact Microsoft for help.

  • [SOLVED] systemd/cron as user: timer doesn't start after boot

    Hello,
I've tried to follow the wiki's systemd/cron functionality article to have a systemd service to run hourly.
Everything seems to be working ok, except that the hourly timer doesn't start automatically : I have to issue a
    systemctl --user timer-hourly.timer start
command every time I start the machine to get the timer running.
Can you help me understand what I'm missing to get the (user) timer to start automatically after boot?
    Thanks!
My setup consists of the following files:
    /home/myuser/.config/systemd/user:

    lrwxrwxrwx 1 myuser users 44 Jun 25 10:10 test.service -> /home/myuser/.config/systemd/user/test.service
    timer-hourly.timer:

test_service.py is a simple python script that appends the current time to a file, to check if the service is being run by the timer. (it is after I start the timer after boot, and runs correctly every hour)
db_backup.sh is a script that dumps a database into a text file in a mercurial repository, commits the change and pushes it to backup locations.

  • Satellite U500-11C fan sometimes doesn't start running Win 7 64bit

    Hello,
I have two Toshiba Satellite U500-11C under Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bits. Sometimes, after a new Windows start, fans don't start and just run a few seconds sometimes. When this happens, the CPU temperature gets very hot (don't know exactly how much). I've found a way to get back to a normal behavious by just unplugging the AC cable and replug it just one second or two after.
Must two laptops have the latest Bios and drivers from Toshiba. In some way, it is the same behavious as under Linux.
With those experiences, I come to think that Toshiba Laptop are not well managing correctly ACPI Fans and tempartures. Is it really a fatality ??
    Hope this feedback can help...

    Hello Tonny,
Yes, I think like you that when I have this fan issue, it means that BIOS feature doesn't work correclty on regulating temperature with variable fan speeds, and finally, it is the overheating security which makes the job. When using Linux, I've seen that ACPI temperature levels are not correctly defined or published by the BIOS : Fans are not expected to be launched before the CPU burns at more than 108C !
What surprises me is that this is a bug in the BIOS that has been living here since the first BIOS versions, and that my researches on various forums show that this Satellite U500-11C is not the only one to have fan issues from Toshiba Laptops on both Linux and Windows.
That said, I don't understand what Toshiba tries to do when making special BIOS versions, instead of using more standard ones with correct ACPI functions programmed inside. Other laptop manufacturers are more "standard" in their approach, and give users more satisfaction on everyday use.
In the same idea, I've finally removed most of Toshiba applications on one of my two Satellite U500-11C and it runs much better : lower power consumption, less heating, more responsiveness, ...
    Hope this helps...

i haven't found any gnome-i18n alike's so i really need help on this one although i'm confortable with english
the secound problem.. i've installed avant-window-navigator from source but when i try to start it or use configuration tools i get this

    Hi
May I ask you if you have checked the system requirements of Civilization 4 firstly? Before you try to play a game you should check the system requirments. Is the notebook fast enough and very important: Is the graphic card compatible with this game?
    Check this!!!
If you can fulfill the system requirements you should make sure that the latest display driver from Toshiba is installed. Dont use the driver from nVidia directly, it doesnt have an overheat protection.
And have you installed the latest DirectX version?

Windows could not start up. A hardware or software change that was recently carried out may be the cause.
If windows files are damaged or incorrectly configured, you can start the repair tool to help you diagnose and resolve the problem. If the power supply was interrupted during startup, choose start windows normally.
    Start startup repair tool (recommended)
    Start windows normally.
After a while windows automatically selects the first option and try to load windows in recovery mode but then I get the following error:
"The installed software could not start. Click ok to shutdown the computer".
When it shutdowns and I start the computer again I get the same error message where I started with the 2 options of recovery mode or start windows normally.
When I select the 2. option (start windows normally), it loads windows and after a while reboots and then I get the same error again with the two options.
I have tried to boot from CD (recovery disk, vista bootable cd) and computer tries a while but then it gives up and start booting from HDD again. (I have altered to boot from CD first in BIOS).
Does anyone know how to solve this issue?
I have Toshiba laptop model nr: L300D-11A

    Hi
If I understood you message, you have tried to boot from Recovery disk and from MS Vista CD and neither recovery disk not Vista CD worked.
    Is it right?
Hmm thats very strange.. Maybe you could remove the HDD from the notebook and could put it into an external USB HDD case.
Then you could format this HDD using another computer.
After that you could try to reinstall the OS again
Please also enter the BIOS and set it to default settings set the SATA mode to compatible and try to boot from Vista CD again
    Good luck

  • Windows Explorer doesn't start?

    Hi there ;)
Well, I think I have a somewhat peculiar problem. When I start windows, the welcome screen shows up, then it goes black, my "Documents" folder shows up but then nothing happens. I press Ctrl+Alt+Del and I can see that explorer.exe isn't running. So I ckick Run, type in "explorer" and it starts, along with the rest of the "boot" process, meaning it starts all my programs and etc... So, I have a lazy windows xD
    Can anyone guess the problem?

There's a registry key that tells Windows what "shell" to load on startup.  Open regtedit, and look for the key here:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Make sure that the shell key is set to be explorer.exe.  It's weird, but I've seen it happen.

  • Satellite A500-19Q: Win 7 doesn't load - UNMOUNTABLE BOOT VOLUME

    Hy everybody,
I'm working since 2 months with my new A500-19Q running Win 7 Home Premium 64bit.
Yesterday night the system has been regularly stopped with the windows "shut down" command.
Today, the machine doesn't load win 7 at all.
If I let the loading work, the system reaches the blue screen with "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME".
If I try to recover the system with the recovery dvd made some time ago by Toshiba Utility, the starts to load informations but after some hard drive work, it stop with black screen and the arrow cursor, but anything else.
I downloaded and burt the Windows 7 64bit Repair Disc, but as already sad, the system start loading but it doesn't get to the end.
So it seems impossible to proceed with "chkdsk /f" command.
    What should I do finally?
    thanks

    Hi
The blinking cursor in the left upper corner means that something could be wrong with the HDD or the partition on the HDD.
I had such issue some years ago on my notebook and in my case the HDD died it was a head crash.
Anyway I think you should check if the HDD can be formatted using another disk
You could try an Linux live CD or something like that

  • Windows install doesn't like my boot camp partition

I am on a late 2013 MacBook pro, retina display, running yosemite. I am attempting to run windows 7 through boot camp. I followed all the instructions on apple support websites, using a USB drive and my downloaded ISO image of windows 7 professional. I partitioned it with 40 GB for windows, and boot camp restarted and launched into windows setup. After selecting language and which version of windows 7 I wanted, it asked which partition I wanted to install on. I selected the 4th partition, the one labeled boot camp. I formatted it, as in the instructions, and then when I hit next, this message appeared.
"Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition. See the setup log files for more information."
Any help would be greatly appreciated, and apologies if I missed this solution in another thread or and missing something simple.

Hello, I have the same problem as OP and I seeing as he hasn't replied in some time, I'll go ahead and give you my results.

Does this tell you anything? I'm needing to have a windows partition on my Mac for my CS classes, but I would very much prefer to not have to use Parallels.
