Satellite U940 Hangs At Leading Innovation Screen

Hi,
I own a Toshiba U940 Ultrabook and yesterday I booted the laptop with my USB drive in the USB port. It seemed to try to boot from the USB drive and was on a black DOS like screen for a few minutes, since the USB drive wasn't bootable. I tried turning the laptop off to restart it, but pressing the keyboard didn't work, so I ended up pulling out the laptop battery.
When I plugged the battery back in, the laptop started and then at the Leading Innovation screen, it loaded some text saying the laptop didn't shut properly and it was loading some files/doing temp repair. However the laptop hung at this screen for ages as well and this time I held the off button to turn the laptop off.
Upon turning my laptop back on again, it now hangs at the leading innovation screen and stays there indefinitely until I turn it off. I can get into my BIOS if I press F2 early enough in the boot sequence and I can also get the boot options loaded if I press F12 early enough as well. I have no system recovery partiton on the laptop atm due to doing a clean install of windows using OEM disks.
Does anyone know whats causing the laptop to hang at the leading innovation screen. This is very frustrating because I have never had this issue before with any other laptops, even if I pull the battery out to restart it.
Thanks all

  • Re: Satellite A - Can't get past Toshiba Leading Innovation screen

When I start my laptop, it stops on he Toshiba leading innovation screen and only provides the option to do one of two things. This is what it says at the bottome of the page *"Press F2 to enter Setup, F12 to enter Multiboot Selection Menu"* I have tried both. I pressed F2, I've press F12 and neither one gets me pst the screen
    - When I press either after the Toshiba screen is visible, they do nothing
    - If I press the F2 during boot up, the instruction at the bottom of the page says "Please Wait". However, I waited for hours and nothing ever happened. The "please wait" message just sat there.
    - If I press the F12 during boot up, the instruction at the bottom of the page says "Press F2 SETUP, Entering boot device selection menu....." Then it just sits there and does nothing
The Toshiba Leading Innovation screen remains the whole time.
Can some one please tell me why I can't get past this screen and how to fix the problem?
    Thank you

I imagine that you have to reset the BIOS back to factory settings. That involves messing with CMOS.
In YouTube you can find vid tutorial that shows how to bypass the BIOS password. Nevertheless, it really is just a tutorial on how to restore BIOS back to factory settings.
Tell me how it goes, and good luck!
You won't lose your HDD files or settings.
To answer why it happened, I would not be able to know until you describe what you have done with the computer so far that might give me a clue!

  • Satellite U940-10C freeze after show "Toshiba leading innovaton"

    Good afternoon.
My U940 stucks in "Toshiba leading innovations" screen and it is impossible to get to the BIOS (neither F2 nor F12). I tried to disconnect all the memories (SSD, HDD, RAM), and main battery; but all was useless.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance!

In my opinion your motherboard is affected.
Im not quite sure what part of motherboard could cause such problems but in my own personal opinion only the motherboard replacement could help you to resolve this issue

  • Netbook NB100: Black screen after Toshiba leading innovation

Something strange occurs with my Netbook N-100.
It has always worked at perfection, but today, when I try to initiate it, it appears the typical screen "Toshiba leading innovation", but then the screen turns black, and "windows"doesn't appear. I hear a kind of high-pitched noise inside the computer.
I'm not precisely good at computers and I tried everything pressing F2 and looking the different options, but none of them looked like to be the solution, and I'm afraid I can ruin my computer (I mean, even more) with my informatic ignorance.
Does someone know what can be happening? I'm totally desperated!
right now solving this problem=solving my life XD
    Thank you very much!
    Grcies!

    Hi
Are you able to press F8 while notebook is powering up?
Do this and check if you can choose the option Repair my Computer and then HDD recovery.
You should also check the BIOS.
Press F2 immediately after the power button has been pressed. This allows you to access the BIOS. Then you could check if the HDD is recognized.
Sorry mate but its difficult to say whats going wrong here

  • Satellite U940 - after update to Win8.1 FN key stop working

I have Toshiba ultrabook U940-b484 ,, after I updated my system to windows 8.1 all FN keys is not working and after more trying only soung switch up/down and brightness keys is only word ,, and keyboard light switch is not working too ,,, any solutions ???
    Regards

I have Satellite U940-103 and Ive done Win8.1 successfully. Everything works perfectly.
My only solution is: Win8.1 update must be done following Toshiba Win8.1 update instructions http://www.toshiba.eu/innovation/generic/windows8_1-upgrade-stepbystep/ and installation instructions document that can be downloaded from Toshiba support and download page.
Have you installed all available Toshiba specific tools and utilities?

  • Satellite 2710XDVD hangs at shut down

My Satellite 2710XDVD hangs at shut down, showing the 'Windows is shutting down' screen. I am running Windows 98 SE, bios 7.60. The problem started after installing a Sitecom WL-011v2 card.
When I remove the card (actually, disable it using the control panel pc card manager) Windows shuts down normally. Sitecom says it is a bios problem.
    Does anyone have a solution?

I came to the conclusion that the problem is that the PC card is not shut down properly when Windows wants to shut down.
My solution is to disable the PC card when I want to shut down Windows. I made a script using AutoIt v3 to do this, just click on the script and it will disable the PC card and then shut down Windows properly.

  • My G4 hangs on a grey screen when I try to boot in OS 9 help?!

I'm desperate! My mac G4 that I've been running for years with both OS X and OX 9 has been unable to boot in OS 9 and I've tried almost everything form option hold on restarts to shift (exrtensions off) zapping the pram etc. I know others have had this problem. I've researched a lot already. I used the same G4 and the same monitor and hardware and everything for years and this problem suddenly sprang up out of nowhere. I desperately need to get this machine to boot in OS 9 because I'm using Protools with many plugins and cards that are not supported on OS X. When I boot in OS X it acts fine no problem like it always did. When ever I try to boot in OS 9 it hangs on a grey screen and then freezes up before and happy face and or extensions have loaded etc.
One thing, and I don't know how important this may be, is that the first time I encountered this problem was after I had attached a USB hub to my computer which had been sitting unused for some weeks and the Hub somehow made the computer start up when I plugged in the USB cable to the USB Hub?! After that OS 9 has refused to boot period no matter what I do. I can run some apps in the classic environment but cannot boot to OS 9 at all ever.
I read in one forum where a guy did an open firmware reset and got some error messages that had to do with USB. He was having the same problem the grey screen when trying to boot on OS 9.
Does any one have an answer Please I'm almost ready to give up!

Hey me back again month later. Well I have tried everything. I even pulled the hard drive out of my G4 and replaced it with a tested and working hard drive which had only OS9 installed on it. In other words that computer had two choices boot into OS 9 or hang on a grey screen. There was no other system present to boot into, so after chiming and starting the boot process it just hangs on the grey screen again. So I guess what Steve Jobs meant when he said OS 9 is dead is that they killed OS 9 because my machine will not look at any OS 9 system folder regardless of whether OS X exists on the machine or not. I tried to reboot holding down option command P R and after the second chime grey screen again. I've read that OS 9 requires some small folder or bytes to be recognized in order to boot which it is obvious newer versions of OS X purposely and maliciously delete in order to make it inoperable. My protools gear works fine I've rested it on other machines. The only way that I can use it is to be able to boot into OS9. Which has been corrupted by OS X. They say you can format a disc with OS 9 drivers but I see no such option using OS 10.4 tiger so I'm not sure what they are talking about.
So here is my question. Why would a G4 450mghz machine with a working OS 9 hard disc installed with no other system folders available not boot after it chimes and begins the start up process. If it is because running OS 10.4 disables the OS 9 drivers and corrupts the machine so that it can never look at a OS 9 again let's just admit that and say OK Steve was right OS 9 is dead but it did not die of natural causes.

    Hello amorriss,
You have a frustrating issue to troubleshoot because of the randomness. We can try troubleshooting, but hard to say if it fixes it or not for a while.
Try putting the computer into a clean boot state, you can find instructions on this forum thread, http://goo.gl/w3KQH.
Once in a clean boot state see if you can get the problem to happen
If it does then we know it's not a program that is starting up causing the issue instead it is likely a driver.
If it doesn't then one of the programs that was booting when Windows boots was causing a conflict, the trick is figuring out which one.

  • Dual boot Linux - Windows on Satellite U940

    Hello to everyone.
I'm quite new on this forum and I have a brand new Toshiba Satellite U940-10N? Using Linux for 2 years, I'd like to install a debian wheezy distribution on it.
On my former computer, only Debian was installed so I'm net really comfortable with dual boot especially with the ssd.
I don't really like windows but I keep it to work sometimes on it.
Do you think it would be better to install the linux system on the system like I've seen it on most of threads, with only the /home on the HDD ? Or do you think it would be interesting to build another raid like it is now for windows ? Would I have better perfomances and speed that way ?
Another question : is it possible to have an ext4 data partition and make windows to see it or do I have to write it in ntfs ? I have noticed that fat32 and ntfs written on linux with gparted are not reconized by windows 8.
Those are my questions for now.
    Thank you for your help.

    Hi there
First let's look at your situation - the U940-10N will most likely be a Win8 unit, right?
If YES - then the BIOS has to be set up to boot UEFI.
    Secure Boot can be disabled.
It seems Debian is not so far in supporting UEFI / EFI boot modes.
Look at this announcement from back in October:
    http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/News/2012/20121018
So, you will need to make sure your debian flavor can boot in UEFI boot mode.
If not, You will have issues getting both OS'es (Debian and Win8) to live side by side and boot without issues.
Next, You'll need to make sure Debian is able to install a boot loader that takes Windows 8 into account and is able to start that OS.
Looking at storage, I tried to install Fedora on a dual-storage system (SSD + HDD).
I installed the OS on the SSD and my Home structure was placed on the HDD.
    This worked very very well.
I think this also provides the best performance, however I have no real statistics to back it up.
Ext4 is not supported by Windows out of the box, but there is a driver existing which implements ext2,3,4 support for Windows: http://www.ext2fsd.com/
If You ask me, I would rather have Linux accessing an NTFS partition than have Windows trying to write to an Ext2/3/4 partition. I am fully confident in the NTFS support from Linux but not the other way around.
If the Fat and NTFS partitions are not recognised by Windows, please check that the partitions are Fat32 or NTFS.
It may be that the file systems are NTFS / Fat but the partitions have Linux signatures.
    Hope this helps
    BR Tom

  • PowerMac G5 hangs after going into screen saver power save mode

I have a PowerMac G5 and it's been working fine, but as of late has been hanging. I had a couple of external disks on the machine ( Maxtor OneTouch II and a OneTouch III). I recently added two more OneTouch III and stripped the three OneTouch III's together in a RAID set. I'm wondering if that is causing the hangs, but I've also seen it hang without the RAID so I'm not convinced it's the RAID.
Anyway, I can't figure out what's causing it to hang, but it seems to hang at some point after the screen saver runs and then the screen goes into power saver mode. It's not hung right when it shuts down the monitor, but at some point after that.
When it gets in this mode, I can't remotely login using ssh and I can't seem to wake it up. What I end up having to do is to hold the power button down for several seconds until the machine powers off.
In an attempt to see what's going on, I set the OS X monitor power save mode to "never", but I don't think I left it that way long enough and I never saw it hang.
Does anyone have any debugging tips that would help me identify the culprit?

I've been having the same troubles lately. Seem
since the JAVA update. It hangs completely after the
screen is shut down. Every morning I have to reboot
    with the power button.
I am also joining the crowd with this issue. I have a 15" Powerbook G4 that has acted normally until recently. Not sure exactly when it started, but about the same time as the recent updates. Similar behavior to the previous forum posts.
When I manually put the laptop to sleep it freezes up before it sleeps and the multi-language reboot warning comes up. This also happens if it is set to auto-sleep after xx minutes.
When I try to wake it up, the screen is black and the power light shows it is on and it never unfreezes or I get the reboot message.
I have tried everything I can think of to troubleshoot this. I just re-installed the 10.4.8 update over the exisiting one (using an external boot drive made with SuperDuper) and it still happens... BUT when I put the laptop to sleep with the startup drive being external, it seemed to behave properly. I can't figure this out since the external clone was made only minutes earlier from the laptop... and it works. I have zapped PRAM, and done the battery removal / power button reset.
Below is the "report" I have been getting - and sending to Apple. They must be getting tired of the many I have sent.
    Any thoughts out there?
    Thanks.

  • T400 hangs with a green screen

    Hi,
I have T400 with windows XP professional OS.
Everything works fine but once in a while the system hangs with a greeen screen(vertical lines). There after nothing works. The only way out is to restart the system and then again everything works fine.
Can you please help me resolve the issue.
Let me know if you all need more information for the same.

Okay, does this machine work on external LCD?
So several repeated reboot sometimes get a working machine?
Can you get into the BIOS menu when the laptop works on odd occasions? If so, go into your bios menu, go into your 'Config' menu.
Under the display there should be option to switch between switchable, discrete or integrated. Choose integrated graphics option. Then press F10 save and exit, see whether that resolves your green screen issue.

  • System Boot Hangs on Grey Apple screen / AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement

    Hi All
I have had this issue on going on MacPro (early 2008) Quad 3.0 and Quad 2.8 machines since 10.5.6.
Boot will hang on the grey screen with Apple Logo or in verbose mode more specifically on AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement: Initialization Complete.
In an attempt to fix I have repaired permissions & disks, both with DU and DW which report no major problems, removed system cache files and eventually reinstalled OSX from scratch and updated to current 10.5.8 systems. I have also tried the singleuser boot and /sbin/fsck -fy command which reports no problems. Still it persists.
The issue presents it's self randomly on multiple machines at various times. If I leave the computer long enough sometimes the boot will complete.. or not. Simply booting up in verbose mode will sometimes get the machine booting. This usually requires a hard power cycle from the hanging boot. re-seating the ram has also helped but so far no conclusive fix.
The only thing that I can think to relate it to is that these machines all share the same system image created with Carbon Copy Cloner (Current Version), however this also occurs on the Master machine. So either I have cloned the issue from the source (twice) or it is inherent to the machines. I have used a different master machine on the 2nd reinstall of the OSX system to rule out the master machine as the introduction of the issue.
These are all standard config Macpro machines with no modifications since getting them out of the box. I only mention this as I have researched this issue and mostly find that the machine in question had been altered in some way.
Does anybody have any further ideas on how I could resolve this?
    I would appreciate your perspectives.
    cheers,
    k.

  • Satellite U940 - SSD drive shows only 11.22GB

    Hi,
I got a brand new Satellite U940-B484 Ultrabook.
The first thing I did was finishing the wizard, then I created the recovery media (using external DVD drive) on three 4.7GB DVD discs
We have Windows 8 Pro license, so my friend formatted the system and installed new Windows 8 Pro, he seems to be missed up with the drivers, so we decided to back to factory status to find and download the correct device drivers.
Even after we got the recovery completed we still have two issues:
Major issue: SSD drive shows only 11.22GB capacity!!
Minor issue: a device in the device manager isn't working correctly!!
Is there any logical explanation for the SSD size to go down from 32 GB to 11 GB????
The only think came across my mind was the possibility to have 2x16GB and the RAID (for some reason) changed from RAID 0 to RAID 1. But even if that is true, where on earth can I change that from?

    > Major issue: SSD drive shows only 11.22GB capacity!!
On my clean preinstalled Satellite U940 SSD is listed as unallocated drive with 11.19GB capacity. As far as I know this small SSD is not there for data saving but as small drive that helps and allows fast start-up.
Fast start-up is a setting that helps your PC start up faster after shutdown. Windows does this by saving system info to a file upon shutdown. When you start your PC again, Windows uses that system info to resume your PC instead of restarting it.
    > Minor issue: a device in the device manager isn't working correctly!!
Which device? USB host controller maybe?
