SavitchIn not found? Need help on first program

I am using an old Java programming book written by Walter Savitch. I am running a sample program from the book in my NetBeans environment. When I run the thing, it gives me errors on the command SavitchIn. Here is the code:
package firstprogram;
* @author mac173
public class Main {
* @param args the command line arguments
public static void main(String[] args) {
System.out.println("Hello out there.");
System.out.println("Want to talk some more?");
System.out.println("Answer y for yes and n for no.");
char answerLetter;
answerLetter = SavitchIn.readLineNonwhiteChar();
if (answerLetter == 'y')
System.out.println("Nice weather we are having, huh?");
System.out.println("Good-by.");
System.out.println("Press any key to end program");
String junk;
junk = SavitchIn.readLine();
The error messages from Netbeans:
Compiling 1 source file to C:\Users\mac173\Documents\NetBeansProjects\FirstProgram\build\classes
C:\Users\mac173\Documents\NetBeansProjects\FirstProgram\src\firstprogram\Main.java:23: cannot find symbol
symbol : variable Savitchin
location: class firstprogram.Main
answerLetter = Savitchin.readLineNonwhiteChar();
C:\Users\mac173\Documents\NetBeansProjects\FirstProgram\src\firstprogram\Main.java:31: cannot find symbol
symbol : variable Savitchin
location: class firstprogram.Main
junk = Savitchin.readLine();
2 errors
BUILD FAILED (total time: 0 seconds)
The book describes SavitchIn as a class to obtain input from the keyboard. I assume the class name and the writers names are the same because the wrote the class. Is this class now obsolete, or did I mess up the code?

  • Need help writing host program using LabView.

    Need help writing host program using LabView.
    Hello,
    I'm designing a HID device, and I want to write a host program using National Instrument's LabView. NI doesn't have any software support for USB, so I'm trying to write a few C dll files and link them to Call Library Functions. NI has some documentation on how to do this, but it's not exactly easy reading.
    I've written a few C console programs (running Win 2K) using the PC host software example for a HID device from John Hyde's book "USB by design", and they run ok. From Hyde's example program, I've written a few functions that use a few API functions each. This makes the main program more streamlined. The functions are; GetHIDPath, OpenHID, GetHIDInfo, Writ
    eHID, ReadHIC, and CloseHID. As I mentioned, my main program runs well with these functions.
    My strategy is to make dll files from these functions and load them into LabView Call Library Functions. However, I'm having a number of subtle problems in trying to do this. The big problem I'm having now are build errors when I try to build to a dll.
    I'm writing this post for a few reasons. First, I'm wondering if there are any LabView programmers who have already written USB HID host programs, and if they could give me some advice. Or, I would be grateful if a LabView or Visual C programmer could help me work out the programming problems that I'm having with my current program. If I get this LabView program working I would be happy to share it. I'm also wondering if there might already be any USB IHD LabView that I could download.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    I can't sync the songs from my computer to my ipod touch. I have gone through the directions on the iPond help page and have not found them helpful. For example, I can't find the autofill button. Can you help?

    I have already tried following those steps. I went back and tried to follow them again but they did not work. Some of my songs have synced, some have not. And I am still not seeing the Autofill icon on the bottom of the menu or anywhere else. I fear something has been corrupted here and I need to start afresh.

    # Yes, if you go to accounts.firefox.org, sign out, you will now be signed out.
    # Sign back in, and you will be asked to save the password you entered.
    # This will save the password and autocomplete if you have this option turned on.
    I am not exactly sure why the menu did not detect the password change or if it was stored incorrectly after you changed it? But after storing the correct password you can manage any duplicate passwords in the password manager.[[Password manager - Remember, delete and change saved passwords in Firefox]]

  • [[ Page Flow Error - Action Not Found ]] - urgent help needed!

    Hi all,
    My portal application runs on Weblogic 8.1 and I am encountering a vague error which does not point back to any of the application-based files. The error message, as stated in the subject, is
    "Page Flow Error - Action Not Found"
    I did modify the url-template-config.xml under groWeb/WEB_INF to add a new template to enforce secure access to application resources. Could this have caused the above error?
    Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!!
    Thanks.

    Here is just a portion of Page Controller class
    package com.amd.portal.presentation.GeneralRegistration
    public class GeneralRegistrationController extends PageFlowController
    * @jpf:action
    * @jpf:forward name="success" path="RegistrationConfirmation.jsp"
    * @jpf:validation-error-forward name="failure" path="index.jsp"
    public Forward registerUser(RegisterUserForm register_form)
              usermanager_ctrl.registerUser(register_form, this.getRequest());
              return new Forward( "success", register_form);
    Here is a portion of the code from the JSP that uses this controller
    <netui:form action="registerUser">
    <tr valign="top">
    <td><font color="red"> * </font> User Name:</td>
    <td>
    <netui:textBox dataSource="{actionForm.userName}"/>

    </tr>

  • Need help with Inventory program part 6

    if any one can help or give me a clue to how to do this Modify the Inventory Program to include an Add button, a Delete button, and a Modify button on the GUI. These buttons should allow the user to perform the corresponding actions on the item name, the number of units in stock, and the price of each unit. An item added to the inventory should have an item number one more than the previous last item.
    ? Add a Save button to the GUI that saves the inventory to a C:\data\inventory.dat file.
    ? Use exception handling to create the directory and file if necessary.
    ? Add a search button to the GUI that allows the user to search for an item in the inventory by the product name. If the product is not found, the GUI should display an appropriate message. If the product is found, the GUI should display that product?s information in the GUI.
    I am new to this so i dont have a clue but i am willing to try but need some guide as to how to do it

  • When I try to open Firefox I receive this message, "Application has failed to start because ssl3.dll was not found." HELP!

    I've been using Firefox for about 3 years. Today, I ran a scan of my computer Webroot Anti Virus and deleted all "risky stuff" they checked. Don't know if this is a coincidence but right after the scan I could not open Firefox. I receive the message, "Application has failed to start because ssl3.dll was not found. Reloading application may remedy this." I reloaded Firefox, the current version, clicked on open and received the same message. I've reloaded Firefox 3 more times with the same results. Now I need HELP.

    See if you can make Webroot restore that file in the Firefox program folder (C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\).<br />
    If not then you need to reinstall Firefox and make sure that Webroot doesn't do that another time.
    You can find the latest Firefox release here:
    *Firefox 8.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html

    if anyone could please tell me whats wrong with my code i'd be greatful...the program is supposed to perform binary and sequential search on a sorted array of 100000 numbers.once on an item in the middle of the array once on the right side of it and once on the left side...i also need to count the number of basic operations for the same number in both sequential and binary to see whats better.and i need to check the time...i think the method call is wrong,not sure though...plz i need help.its not compiling and i dont know why..

    Just add new messages to a thread you've already created. Don't create a new thread each time.
    Anyway, look. This is wrong:int seqSearch(z;50000;n); //method call 4 key where key=midfor two reasons. The first is that leading "int"; it doesn't mean anything here. "int" is used to declare an integer variable, but you're not declaring a variable here, you're invoking a method. The second problem is that you're using semicolons to separate arguments in the method call, but actually commas are correct. You probably want something more like this:
    int result;
    result = seqSearch(z, 50000, n);  //method call 4 key where key=mid.
    Some more problems with your code: you're calling non-static methods in a static context (the main method is static and seqSearch isn't). You're also using "n" before you declare it, which is probably a problem.
    And this makes no sense:z=2*i;because you've declared z to be an array; you can't use the multiplication operator on an array. It's not clear really what you're trying to accomplish there.
    Here's what I want you to do. Take your code and completely remove the binSearch method. Just rip it out. Then in your main() method, take out all references to the binSearch method, and all references except for the first one of the seqSearch method. Fix the things I mentioned above.
    Then try to compile what you have. It won't compile. You will get error messages. That's OK. Just fix them and move on. If you don't understand an error message, ask on these forums (DON'T CROSSPOST), quoting the full error message and the relevant lines of code.
    After a couple hours, you'll fix the syntactical bugs, and your program will compile. Then you'll find that it compiles but the program doesn't work right. That's also OK. This is how computer programming works. It's part of the process. Don't panic. At that point, you can start trying to fix the program so it does what it's supposed to. Eventually you'll get it to work.
    Then, and only then add more invocations of the seqSearch method. They won't all work, probably. You'll find more bugs. That's OK. Just repeat the process of fixing them.
    When you've fixed those bugs, then, and only then, add the binSearch method. Repeat the process of fixing syntax and hunting down and fixing bugs.
    Then your program will work.

  • /sbin/init not found after Solaris10-x86 first reboot

    Hello all,
    I just installed Solaris 10 on a x86. Nothing seemed to go awry, AFAIK.
    After the very first reboot it fails to boot with this:
    WARNING: exec(/sbin/init) file not found
    (Could not start init)
    Press any key to reboot.
    So I'm stuck, it seems.
    It does not seem that the / slice is missing as I guess I'd have a totally different error message, something like "could not mount root fs", I dunno.
    I'm sure that if I could boot the install DVD in single mode I'd be able to go and really check if /sbin/init really exists.
    Except that... I'm used to Sparc with its OPB, dunno how to get x86's equivalent to OpenBoot.
    Anyway, anyone came across the same "missing file" problem after initial install, and if so, how did you get out of it ?
    Bonus question, is there an equivalent to OpenBoot on x86 and how to reach it ?
    Before you ask.. this PC ran on Solaris 9/x86 a looooong time ago, no hardware changes, so no need to send me to the HCL :)
    Thanks,
    Jeff

    WARNING: exec(/sbin/init) file not foundSorry, can't help you with this since I never encountered such an error.
    Except that... I'm used to Sparc with its OPB, dunno
    how to get x86's equivalent to OpenBoot.That would be the configuration manager. Its the question you get in the beginning where it asks you what image to boot ('press b or enter to boot normally'). If you press escape there you get into the section where you can determine the default boot device and add new hardware drivers when needed.
