SBOD and long pauses during safari browsing

When surfing the internet I periodically get the spinning beach ball of death and it lasts for around 20 to 30 seconds. It seems like this shouldn't be happening considering I'm not running any other applications at the same time and not using much ram. Can anyone tell me what's going on? If something's broken I'd like to get it fixed!

Welcome to the forums!
Try this:
(First, if yours is an Intel Mac, check that Safari is not running in Rosetta, which is enough to slow it to a crawl. If you are running Snow Leopard, run Safari in 32 bit not 64 bit.)
Do you have enough RAM? Less than 1GB can cause slowness. Is your hard drive too full? Less than 15%, or 15GB, of free space can also cause slowness.
Adding DNS codes to your Network Settings, should gives good results in terms of speed-up as well as added security:
Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers:
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
(You can also enter them if you click on Advanced and then DNS)
(An explanation of why that is both safe and a good idea can be read here: http://www.labnol.org/internet/tools/opendsn-what-is-opendns-why-required-2/2587 /
Open DNS also provides an anti-phishing feature: http://www.opendns.com/solutions/homenetwork/anti-phishing/ )
Wikipedia also has an interesting article about Open DNS:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenDNS
Whilst in System Preferences/Network you should also turn off 'IPv6' in your preference pane, as otherwise you may not get the full speed benefit (the DNS resolver will default to making SRV queries). If you want to know what IPv6 is:
This is Apple's guidance on iPv6:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8708.html
Click on Apply Now and close the window.
Restart Safari, and repair permissions.
If that didn't do it, then try this as well:
Empty Safari's cache (from the Safari menu), then close Safari.
Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete the following files:
form values
download.plist
Then go to Home/Library/Preferences and delete
com.apple.Safari.plist
Repair permissions (in Disk Utility).
Start up Safari again, and things should have improved.

    Hi,
We are running a server application on an large machine (~120 CPU, ~380 GB Memory).

I can't find any significant differences in the log between fast and long running garbage collections.
I urgently need help in solving this problem !
    What can I do ?

After the exciting reply I did get on my question, we did some more investigations on the problem and it seems that we finally found the solution to our problem.
The number of garbage collection threads used by the virtual machine defaults to the number of cpus of the machine.
This is ok for small machines or machines where the main load is produced by the java application itself.
In our environment the main load is not produced by the java application but oracle database processes.
When java tries to do it's garbage collection using 120 threads (# CPU) on the machine which is already overloaded by non java processes, the thread synchronization seems to produce an exorbitant overhead.
My theory is that spin locking is used on memory access, causing threads to spin while waiting for other blocking threads not getting cpu because of the heavy load on the system.
The solution is now to limit the number of garbage collection threads.
We did that on the first try by setting -XX:ParallelGCThreads=8
For over one day with heavy load no long GC pauses were experienced any more.

  • How can I play online videos without many long pauses during play?

I have current flash and 7.  Lately, all online videos have many long pauses throughout play.  They used to play continuously through.  Flash is enabled.
    How can I solve this?

To help troubleshoot we'll need the following system information:
    Operating   system
    Browser
    Flash   Player version
When reporting issues with video or audio, it's also helpful to get your system hardware and driver details.  Instructions for finding this information can be found here:
    Windows
    Mac
Finally, sometimes video and audio problems are caused at a lower level and not directly related to Flash Player.  I recommend trying both of the links below to see how they perform.  If the problem exists with both, then Flash Player is most likely not the culprit as the HTML5 video link does not use Flash Player when playing.  You can verify the use of HTML5 by right clicking the HTML5 video and looking for the words "About HTML5" at the bottom of the context menu.
    HTML5   video
    Non-HTML5 video

  • FCS 3 (or call it Upgrade!) Well-known Long Pauses during Installation

Does anyone know if the issue with the 'long pauses' of the progress bar hitting 100% during the installation of components and discs still exists during the Installation of FCS3? Just want to know what to expect!
This was well-known for FCS2 I seem to remember.
    thanks.

  • Please help me fix a 400 error message that i'm getting for a site I've visited a number of times and is accessible through Safari browser.

I am a fitbit owner and downloaded their app on my macbook pro several weeks ago. I have accessed that app to review fitbit progress multiple times each day since. Today, i can not do that. I can't even access the Fitbit website. I get a 400 error - your browser has sent an invalid request.
i am having no trouble accessing any other internet content via firefox.
I can access the Fitbit website and my account through Safari. i can also access the Fitbit website and my account through my iphone. The problem appears to be something specific between my firefox and Fitbit.
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi,
You should be able to fix this by clearing Firefox's cookies and cache. Here's how:
#Click the menu button [[Image:New Fx Menu]] and click History button, and then Clear Recent History... .
#Under "Time range to clear", select "Everything".
#Now, click the arrow next to Details to toggle the Details list active.
#From the details list, check ''Cache'' and ''Cookies'' and uncheck everything else.
#Now click the ''Clear now'' button.
Let me know how it goes,

  • Long pauses during printing

I have an HP C5550 all in one.  It workd fine for quite awhile, but now there are long pauses after it prints each line.  Tried unplugging the USB cable and doing a sef-test and got the same result

Hello there! Welcome to the forums @rachp ,
I read your post about how your printing is pausing after each line. As the printer is also pausing when you do the self test prints from the printer, this would point towards a hardware problem. I would suggest a power reset and ensure the printer is plugged in directly to the wall outlet, avoiding power bars.
Press the Power button to turn on the product.
With the product turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
    Wait at least 15 seconds.
Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
If the product does not turn on by itself, press the Power button to turn it on.
If the troubleshooting does not help resolve your issue, I would then suggest calling HP's Technical Support to see about further options for you, such as a replacement or trade in. If you are calling within North America, the number is 1-800-474-6836 and if you are calling outside of the US/Canada region,: click here.

  • K7N2 Delta-L long pauses during boot

I bought all the parts and assembled the system, making sure I was always grounded.  When the system boots, it hangs during booting for long periods of time, but it resumes like normal afterwards.  I'm completely at a loss here. I've tried all kinds of things...  Please help... Thanks
The first pause begins with "Primary IDE channel no 80 conductor cable installed". then it pauses again just after "Verifying DMI Pool..." then it pauses sporadically after that. I've not installed any software yet.

  • Beachball and long pauses in iDVD 6 menus and buttons

Over the weekend I have made several DVDs sucessfully in iDVD 6.0.2. The application never actually crashed on me but when doing simple things like dragging the scroll bar to look at the various themes, clicking on the buttons for "media" etc or just getting a menu to change a setting I would often get the spinning beachball.
When this happened it would be several minutes before iDVD would respond again. During this time I could work in other applications without a problem. When this happened Activity monitor showed iDVD as not responding and often thumbnail server and encoder server were also shown the same. The CPU usage for iDVD would be between 70 and 120% during the time and memory allocated kept increasing. It started at 4-500Mb and got to over 1GB.
Having looked through these discussions I tried deleting the preferences, deleting the iDVD cache files and checked I didn't have any duplicate fonts (I didn't). None of these seemed to have any impact.
    Any ideas?

I'm sure iDVD itself isn't repsonding as it can happen before I've even added any video to the project. Just scrolling through the themes for example. I have the preferences set to best quality rather than best performance (so background encoding is supposed to be off) as I was working with 90 mins or in one case 180 minutes of video (with a Dual Layer disk in that case).
Rather than do nothing when it gave me the spinning beachball I just moved to other applciations until it came back again. When I finished the project and hit burn I generally left the computer to it for a few hours.

  • Why does flash no longer work in viewing SnagFilms or Hulu under Safari Browser but still works for Netflix.  And, where can I receive directions on how to install the PPAPI Plug In for Flash Player for Maverick 10.9.4.

Until recently, I was able to watch both SnagFilms and Hulu within the Safari Browser successfully.  In both movie sites, I no longer get video and am asked to download Adobe Flash Player (which I already have 14.0.0.125) but my system indicates that Plug-In PPADI has not been installed?  Where to go to find this correct download?  When consulting with SnagFilms and Hulu, it was recommended that I download and watch in the Chrome Browser, which is successful.  However, I don't like the idea that I must run a second browser to do stuff on my Mac.  I don't have any issues with watching films under Safari within Netflix.  I am so confused.  What about the security issues with respect to running google products--do I need to be concerned if this is the only method for accessing my movie sites.

The problem is that your Flash Player is not current. Check this to see what the current version is (vs what you have) and here to get the latest version. There is supposed to be a major security issue in the version you've got so Apple is blocking its use. In any case, don't get Flash Player from anywhere except Adobe.

First try opening "System Preferences" and select "Keyboard" (under the "Hardware" category). Next press the "Restore Defaults" button. Next close all applications relevent to this issue. Now reopen the programs and see if the escape key works. If the problem still remains then try to navigate to the options and preferences of said applications and see if you mistakedly unbound the escape key.

  • Safari Browser and Mail App cannot be opened.

After I turn off my iPod Touch and start up again, Safari browser and my Mail App crashes every time I open it. I tried to reboot the device again, and it did not work. I'm going to have to restore, but my question is:
What are the reasons for this? This has never happen to me before.
    Replies appreciated.

Almost all the times things like that just happens and they seldom return.  If i keeps recurring after restoring to factory defaults/new iPod then you likely have a hardware problem.

    Hi,
From your description, my understanding is that you get issue when you use Update Panel in Safari and sometimes Chrome.
Safari browser is a WebKit-based browser, ASP.NET AJAX breaks down completely in some circumstances when using WebKit-based browsers. Here
is an article about how to run ASP.NET AJAX on Safari browser, please check it:

  • How to reinstall safari browser in my emac power G4 running classic?

how to fix my start-up not open classic and how to reinstall safari browser?

There is no Classic version of Safari.   The earliest version of Safari came out in 2003 and could run on Mac OS X 10.2.   In order to run Safari and Mac OS 9 side by side, you need Mac OS X 10.4.11 or earlier installed to have Classic.
Mac OS X 10.3 was the first to include Safari prebundled.
Your 10.4 installer discs include Safari, which you can extract with http://www.charlessoft.com/ Pacifist.
Your eMac installer discs include the restore application to reinstall Classic environment:

From user Joe Bailey comes this equally useful advice:
    The facts are:
    1. There is no anti-malware software that can detect 100% of the malware out there.
    2. There is no anti-malware that can detect anything targeting the Mac because there
is no Mac malware in the wild, and therefore, no "signatures" to detect.
    3. The very best way to prevent the most attacks is for you as the user to be aware that
the most successful malware attacks rely on very sophisticated social engineering
techniques preying on human avarice, ****, and fear.
    4. Internet popups saying the FBI, NSA, Microsoft, your ISP has detected malware on
your computer is intended to entice you to install their malware thinking it is a
        protection against malware.
    5. Some of the anti-malware products on the market are worse than the malware
from which they purport to protect you.
    6. Be cautious where you go on the internet.
    7. Only download anything from sites you know are safe.
    8. Avoid links you receive in email, always be suspicious even if you get something
you think is from a friend, but you were not expecting.
    9. If there is any question in your mind, then assume it is malware.
