Scale and Crop .fla file?

So I have an animated logo .fla file, there some some AS 2.0 in it. I basically need to scale and crop the entire file (just like you'd scale and crop an image in photoshop). Any easy way to do this in flash?

There isn't any one click method for doing it if that's what you're looking for. There is no cropping tool so that becomes a matter of resizing the stage by entering new dimension for it... similarly so to scale the stage. As for the content, that all needs to be manually scaled as well.
If you have all vector content, then you can always try scaling at the swf level. Visually it should not be impacted. Still, if you needed cropping for different stage dimensions, that would need to be done manually.

• Scale and Crop in slideshow not working

I put together 2 slideshows with music and used the pan and zoom feature. Unfortunately, when i select scale and crop for the images, its still showing black bars instead of filling the screen. The images vary in size and rotatin but they are all high quality. I am working in cs6.
Any advice or solution would be greatly appreciated.

As a workaround, you might want to look into my workflow of using Still Images.
Now, I must start by saying that I nearly always create my slideshow in PrPro, and do not normally use the SlideShow feature in En.
I gather my Images into folders, that differentiate their size, and their orientation, and will often place those, that will require Panning on a Zoomed OUT Image, into yet another.
In Photoshop, I have Actions to Scale to the necessary dimensions, and also apply Rotation, if required. For those Images that WILL have the Pans, I calculate how large they need to be, and adust one of the Actions for that purpose.
Then, I use Automate>Batch, choosing the appropriate Action, and set my Source Folder and Destination Folder, as needed. Those Ps Actions work on the every Image in the Source Folder, and output (Save_As) to my Destination Folder, as PSD.
Those Scaled files are then Imported, and any Pans, Zooms, etc., are applied to them.
I have not used En's Scale function, but have read of a few problems with it. Also, remember that any sort of Scale to Frame, will only Scale up to the point, where the greatest dimension fills that dimension on the Frame, so if you have, say a portrait oriented Image (vertical), the Scale function will only Scale that up, until the vertical dimension fills the vertical dimension of your Frame, leaving black bars on either side (Pillarboxed). Same for a landscape oriented image (horizontal), whose Aspect Ratio is less than the Video Frame. That Image will be Scaled until the horizontal dimension fills the horizontal dimension of the Video Frame, and as the Aspect Ratio does not match up to the Aspect Ratio of the Video Frame, you will be left with black bars above and below (Letterboxed).
As required, I also do any Cropping that would be required by differences in Aspect Ratio, so that my processed Images WILL match my Video Frame Size.
Maybe others will have some tips on using the features in En, to perhaps save you from using the workaround.
Good luck,
Hunt

• Scale and Crop with Image Alchemy

Hello,
We're using Digital Asset Managment with Image Alchemy for the conversion engine. Does anybody know how to configure a rendition set that scales and crops an image without distortion? So if you check-in a 1000x1500 pixel jpeg, it could scale it down and crop it to exactly 100x100 pixels.
I've been looking through the Image Alchemy documentation, but haven't found this example yet.
Thanks
-Jason

All you need to do is define an "ImageAlchemy" variable inside the "ImageManager_NameValues" ResultSet, DAM automatically knows when to use it for the rendition info. But instead of pointing to the ImageAlchemy executable file, I point to my script. For my conversion ResultSet's extEngine, I refer to an "ImageMagick" variable instead.

• Scale and Crop - left with black bars

In Final Cut Express, I know the concept of "scale and crop" but when I am scaling and cropping, I am still left with black bars on each side of the video. It seems that I am able to crop/scale the white background and the video but not the canvas. Here is a screenshot of what I am working with...
http://www.brokersalliance.com/paperwork/crop.gif
Even after I export the video, I am still left with "unused space."
I want the white background to fill the total space yet when I resize the video/white background, I am left with black excess.

You have a black background BECAUSE you cropped the clip. When you scale down or crop a clip and nothing is underneath it, all you'll see is black.
If you want a white background, place a color matte on a video track below the clip and set its color to white.

• How to Scale and Crop

I'm working on animating some screen capture footage. I'm trying to crop out part of the screen and replace it with my own background, and then do some moves. However, when I zoom in to the footage, it throws off my crop - the crop moves with the zoom instead of staying stationary like I want it to. In other words, I want my custom background to stay the same size and for the box that the screen capture is in to stay the same size (crop the clip). What it's doing instead is cropping the image itself, so that if I scale the image up, the crop moves along with it.
How do I apply the crop on top of the scale, as part of the clip itself rather than just cropping the image? I'd rather mess with compound clips.
Thanks!

Compound clips are nothing more than "groups". In order to supercede clip level edits, sometimes it's necessary to edit the group instead.
Crop is part of the media, as is scaling. Scaling the media scales the crop.
Here are three ways to accomplish the effect you're looking for:
1)
Select your clip and type Option-G (make compound ["group"])
Add the cropping you need to the compound level and not the clip itself
2)
Select your clip and make compound
Add Effects > Keying > Mask to the the compound level (optional rounded corners and feathering)
3)
Place a Generator > Elements > Shapes at the top level (over the clip you want cropped)
[Select Square and use Video > Transform > Scale to alter the "aspect"]
Set the Video > Compositing > Blend Mode to Stencil Alpha
Select the generator and your clip and make a compound clip (option-G) [creating the compound here is simply to "stop" the action of the Alpha blend mode from "cutting through" the entire project

• CS3 and CS4 .fla files in Flash Pro 8 ?

Does anyone know what it takes for me to open .fla files from CS3/CS4 - in my Flash Pro 8 ?
It says "Wrong file type" or something like that...
The guy sending me CS3/CS4 is a PC user, and I am a Mac user... dont know if that matters....
Thanks,
John

You cannot open CS3/4 file in Flash 8. Either you or the person sending you the files has to save the files down to Flash 8 versions before you can open them in Flash 8. CS3 can save files down to Flash directly since each version of Flash can save to the previous version. But CS4 files would need to be saved as CS3 files first, and then CS3 could be used to save back to Flash 8. If any features new to CS3/4 are used in the files, these features will be lost in the conversion.

• 1080x 1920 AE Comp to FLA FILE. the xfl can't create FLV files greater then 1920x1080

I need help! My problem is the following:
I need to transform an AE comp into a FLA file (not an SWF). The comp is 1080 by 1920 (vertical) and I tried to use the XFL file but I get a 1080 by 1080 FLA file when I open the XFL in Flash. then maximum supported by XFL 1920x 1080 (the opposite).
a) I tried in AE to export a sequence of PNG to import it into FLASH inside of a movie clip, but I only can do this on the first 100 frames then it crashes all the time.
b) Use different import file types when to import to Flash?
c) Scale the comp in AE to 608x1080 and then scale on a FLA FILE?
No success!
What can I do?
Thanks a lot!

Todd_Kopriva,
Thanks man! It was very
usefull. I got to have to trick it a bit but in the end it works.
Mylenium,
I suppose that it can be done by code, but it works Todd´s way. Thank you very must!
Now, Im kind of worried of what I can lose of quality or noise on the effects, because of the transfer from AE to FLA? It all vectors, so it doesn´t loose nothing, right?
Thanks very must guys. I have the weekend to fix this so Im trying to do it the right way.

• Load new .fla file via MouseEvent

I have a script that Rob Dillon so graciously passed my way
that will create an array to hold buttons which use the MouseEvent
will call on to navigate to a new URL. The syntax works great, but
another thing I would like to do is to have a new .fla file load in
the .swf flash movie.
Basically I have an index map as a .fla file, when the use
mouses over the quadrangle, a new smaller scale map(separate .fla
file) will open. Then the user could click on the array of buttons
to open up urls that had pdf, jpegs, and other documents related to
the smaller scale map.
Any idea how have my index map call on the individual
quadrangle via action script 3?
Thanks,
Chris

I found out you cannot achieve this, unless you use explicit URL paths.
I ended up keeping my XML file in the same directory as my SWF. This will work, but I would rather have my XML file excluded from the SWF's folder, and placed somewhere else, in isolation. Afterall, this specific XML file is for webservice WSDL address location, which I do not want to include in my project. This needs to be configurable outside of the application. I shouldnt need to modify code for every single build I need to produce....
Eventually I will have automated builds, which will delete all the contents from this folder. I will have to tell my automated builder to reproduce my XML config file. This really means, I need to have a duplicate copy on the file system to copy into my build folder when automating.
I really wish the SWF could access any directory on the server I ask it to. Kinda lame workaround.

• After paste attributes(transform and crop), it is strange crop...

Hi everybody~
I did copy from one clip and then paste attributes to same positon, scale , and crop.
But after that, like that above image, crop is problem.
Of course I replaced source clip again and no problem.
But I want to know why that problem occured.
Help me~

What about the frame size of the project?
I tried with two clip recorded with my MBP's iSight camera (at 640x480).
On a 640x480 project, I could not make the problem occur. Paste atributes worked correctly.
On an 1080p project, the problem manifested itself. It seems that pasting atributes somehow messes up the spatial conform parameter: while it still shows as "Fit", it appears as if it were set to "None", as far as I can tell.
(Of course, such an error has not effect when the dimensions of the clip coincide with those of the project it is in).

• Replacing and retaining scaled and cropped images

Hi,
For some reason I can't find how to replace exisisting images that had been tweeked or even images that have not been tweeked in Author. I have several similar images that needs to be scaled and postion in the same area from page to page. I import an image, scale it and cropped it, but once placed I don't know how to replace it with a different image. I tried creating a a template (another problem), but still no go.
*also, is there a way to create a job without using template? It doesn't seem to allow you it.
Thanks in advance...AG_779

You can have a master image on the right hand page in the layout pane,
and set it to be a media placeholder.(in inspector)
The image will be same size same spot on each page,
You can drag an drop to replace the image on each page.
The problem is, if the new image is a different size (pixels), it will change the size of the place holder frame to match the new image. it will not keep the size of the master image and crop with in that size.
It is best if you scale and crop each image outside of IBA in Photoshop etc. first,
then drag and drop on the place hlder for each page.

• Open old fla files?

Hi,
I have an fla file from about 2001 that I'm trying to open, but it crashes Flash CS4 through Flash CS5.5.
Is there a way to open something this old?
thanks,
Dave

there are quite a few people still using as1. anyone adding code to an object (eg, on(release){...}) is using as1.
and those fla files can be opened with new versions of flash. (publishing a swf for a newer flash player and having it run, as originally intended, is often problematic.)

• How to bundle a .FLA and multiple .SWF files in one .EXE?

Hi,
I have a .FLA file which uses loadMovieNum() to load various
.SWF files when each one is called by the user clicking on a
button. Each .SWF file also uses loadMovieNum() to call a second
.SWF file. When I publish the .FLA file as a .SWF file it all works
beautifully.
Now I need to package the entire project into a Windows
projector .EXE file for offline use on a computer without the Flash
Player. When I publish the main .FLA file as a .EXE file, the .SWF
files still load, although they blink before fully loading and
displaying steadily.
What I would really like to do is to bundle all the .SWF
files into the .EXE file so when I send the finished project to the
end user, they only have to deal with one file, rather than a
folder with the .EXE file and multiple .SWF files.
Is there a way to do this?
I am using Flash 8 Professional.
Thanks,
Cam

Since this isn't going to be web-based, why not include all
the external swf files into the same Flash file and then use
attachMovie?
This will allow you to create one .exe file that would
contain EVERYTHING. Since you aren't worried about loading speeds,
you don't have to load the movie clips, but can simply create one
large Flash file.

• NON-Flash User Wants to Edit and "Recompile" an SWF or FLA file...help??

Hello!! Although I am NOT new to Mac, I have NEVER attempted to edit an SWF file and I'm seeking an EASY way to do so. I think I might be CLOSE but I'm wasting time trying to figure it out so I'm posting here for some help...hopefully!! :-))
I also apologize because I did NOT know where to post this question so KINDLY direct me if I have posted in the wrong place!
Soooo, I have an complete, original .swf flash movie. It is a Holiday greeting but the VERY LAST frame has text that is NOT RELEVANT and I wish to change that text.
It appears that the text I want to change is (I do NOT know the correct term) a "layer" of graphic content for the last frame.
So, I have done TWO THINGS: I have used the Flash Decompiler app to (1) create an .fla file and (2) DECOMPILED the entire .swf extracting ALL the resources/objects that are used to create the original .swf animation. I have NO IDEA what to do with the .fla file...I know it is used to edit the animation but I do not have software to manipulate the file.
BUT, in the decompiled files, I HAVE LOCATED the one resource...a TEXT RESOURCE...that I wish to change. This extracted text resource is named "Dynamic text 293.swf", saved as in .swf format.
Now HERE is where I am STUCK!!...and I THINK this is the direction I would like to go:
1. Open the Dynamic text 293.swf file in a format that allows me to EDIT THE TEXT I wish to change. HOW DO I DO THAT?? Can I convert it to a jpeg, edit the text, and then BACK to an .swf file?? Can I simply CREATE a JPEG and somehow SAVE IT as an .swf file to REPLACE the Dynamic text 293.swf file? Is there an EASIER/DIFFERENT way to edit the text in this Dynamic text 293.swf file?
2. After editing the text in the Dynamic text 293.swf file, HOW DO I "RECOMPILE" the folder of alllll the extracted resources from the original .swf animation, NOW with this NEW/EDITED Dynamic text 293.swf file, and RECREATE the full .swf with the changes I made??
Again, I do NOT have FLASH or MACROMEDIA or any of those apps :-/ I DO have the .fla file conversion AND have isolated the SINGLE extracted resource file (Dynamic text 293.swf) that I want to edit.
THANK YOU TO EVERYONE FOR YOUR HELP Greatly appreciated!!
Scott

That's a problem, since the format changes between jpg and swf when converted
probably won't just go back to their previous state, less the changed section.
The converter you have, is it a freeware to convert swf to fla; or what does it say
that it can do? In some cases, a flash video can be copied (perhaps illegally)
through use of a software such as Ambrosia's SnapZ ProX and a movie of any-
thing playing on your Mac can be copied. So, a movie could be paused at the
end where the unwanted content exists, so the copy would not have it recorded.
Snapz ProX - Ambrosia Software: (not freeware, has 'free trial' version)
http://www.ambrosiasw.com/utilities/snapzprox/
Otherwise, there are a few shareware and freeware editors for swf content; to
some degree or another they either convert content or allow some editing.
And this may only work as far as the item's creator allowed, if the file is locked.
' swf fla freeware editor Mac OS X ' - google search:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=swffla+freeware+editor+Mac+OS+X&btnG=GoogleSearch&aq=f&oq=
I'd tried some basic editing of swf files a few years ago, and was able to only
convert the string of images into single-frame jpgs and work on each one,
but could not get them back into an swf. Perhaps graphic converter or other
software could do something for these; but I am inexperienced in all that.
Good luck & happy computing!

• Loading, cropping and saving jpg files in Flex

I'm attempting to apply the code for selecting, cropping and saving image data (.jpg, .png) as shown on the web site:
http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flash/quickstart/filereference_class_as3.html#articlecontentAd obe_numberedheader_1
The sample application is contained within a class called Crop contained in the action script file Crop.as which begins as follows:
package
import com.adobe.images.JPGEncoder;
import com.adobe.images.PNGEncoder;
import flash.display.BitmapData;
import flash.display.DisplayObject;
import flash.display.DisplayObjectContainer;
import flash.display.Loader;
import flash.display.LoaderInfo;
import flash.display.Sprite;
import flash.events.Event;
import flash.events.IOErrorEvent;
import flash.events.MouseEvent;
import flash.geom.Matrix;
import flash.geom.Rectangle;
import flash.net.FileFilter;
import flash.net.FileReference;
import flash.utils.ByteArray;
public class Crop extends Sprite
My application attempts to make use of the Crop class by including the Crop.as file:
<mx:Script source="Crop.as"/>
in the Flex Component which needs it, and then calling the Crop constructor to perform the methods of the class
var localImage:Crop = new Crop();
localImage.Crop();
My application does not compile. The package statement (or the curly bracket on the following line) is flagged with the error "Packages may not be nested".
I have no idea why this should be as I cannot see any nested definitions anywhere in my application. The component includes the Crop.as file which contains the package and class definition.
Can anyone give my some guidance as to why this error is occurring?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Scott,
#1
that error is because "fx:Script" (or mx:Script) are intended to include part of Actionscript code - but not class defitions or blocks.
So if you are trying to include e.g. such class:
package
import flash.display.Sprite;
public class Crop extends Sprite
public function Crop()
super();
public function processImage():void
trace("processImage()");
compiler will immediately complain as you are trying to incorporate nested class within your application code.
#2
here is correct way (I think) to incorporate some class via mxml tags (here using fx:Script):
Using class sample above:

<s:Application xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009"
xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark"
xmlns:mx="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/mx"
xmlns:utils="*"
applicationComplete="completeHandler(event)">

<fx:Declarations>
<utils:Crop id="cropUtil"/>
</fx:Declarations>

<fx:Script>

import mx.events.FlexEvent;
protected function completeHandler(event:FlexEvent):void
cropUtil.processImage();

</fx:Script>
</s:Application>
But note that you could simply create instance of your class by direct import in fx:Script:
<fx:Script>

import mx.events.FlexEvent;
private var cropUtil:Crop = null;
protected function completeHandler(event:FlexEvent):void
cropUtil = new Crop();
cropUtil.processImage();

</fx:Script>
hth,
kind regards,

• Beginner Question re: SWF files and FLA files

Hi,
Im new to flash. I have some templates (in FLA format with all supporting files...xml; html; and the swf file). When using html templates, I can modify the content easily by simply adding or changing the text
original text
to
steve custom text
and so on.
My issue is Im trying to modify the content of the fla files into a new swf file but do not know how to access the text, background or images the tempalte is currently producing. The timeline at the bottom doesnt show objects and their timelines like the basic tutorials show me.
Is there a way to access the content of of an fla file or perhaps the content of an swf file? I think the swf file is like a jpeg coverted from RAW, meaning its the end product and the source file is where the modify is done.
Am I swimming in the deep with sharks?
Thanks!

hmm..so if the template ive downloaded depicts a green ball bouncing across an orange background(swf file). The objects (green ball) and the background (simply overlay colored orange) is embedded into the FLA AS3 code?
not necessarily. they could be created with code, they could be created with the tools in the fla and they could be loaded bitmaps.
To be clear these objects (in my example: ball and background) are not external jpegs (or similar file type like png) which I can open, edit, then allow the code to access and utilize the new object. For example, change the ball into a square and changes it color to purple and then change the background to pink via PS or illstr.
In short, Im having trouble trying to find the objects which are being manipulated by the code. My current perspective with templates is to modify the image or text by accessing the files delivered with the template. If the .html commands to place image221.jpeg in certain div, I would just open the images files, find image221.jpeg, modifiy the image and then save it as image221.jpeg. Of course I can create a new image save it as steve123.jpeg, save it to the images folder and then modify the code to access the new file by using its new name.
This is what Im trying to accomplish with my flash template but cant find the source objects .
Im getting the impression this cant be done.
that's almost certainly incorrect.
My final question is then, where are source images or text or movie files stored?
noone can say without direct inspection.
Is it possible they are on third party servers on the web?
no
Are they imbedded in the code?
maybe yes, maybe no.
I can only assume if they are stored on my drives (in an external format) that I would be able to access them.
correct. more specifically, they would have to be in the directory with your embedding html and swf or a subdirectory.
If however, they are on a a third part web site or embedded into the code, then I may be in way over my head.
you can assume this is not the case.
so, open the fla in flash. click control/test. click view and make sure bandwidth profiler and streaming graph are checked. you should then be able to see the main timeline as the swf plays. note the main timeline frame where you see the object(s) you want to edit.
close the test environment and go to that main timeline frame and start sleuthing to see if the objects were created in flash. you can also click on the first object in the library and arrow down looking for the object(s) you want to edit to see if they were created without code. if you find them, note their library name and possibly linkage id or class. use movie explorer to search for those names.
but, to be sure, it can be very difficult to edit templates. i've not seen one yet that was made by a competent developer and i've worked on dozens of them.
