Scam *72 numbers

This morning at 12:38 AM I received a call from 713-981-0098 stating I was listed as emergency contact for someone in jail.  They said I needed to contact *721-323-458-8263 and talked to Lt. Brown regarding booking number 3553220.  I researched *72 placed in front of the phone number and discovered it is a way of allowing the other phone number to charge calls etc. to your phone.  I contacted the police by 1:00 AM and they told me they could do nothing because I didn't fall for the scam and they were too busy.
I did a reverse phone lookup on the internet on 323-458-8263 and found it was a cell phone belonging to someone in a near by city.  I researched the 713-981-0098 number and discovered it is in Texas and is the valid number used by the jail systems in the United States.
According to the way the scam works, your phone gets charged and you have to pay it.  The people in jail get the money put on their books.  The police will not do anything about this crime because they have other things to do.  The phone company can not do anything about it because it is a feature they offer and you are the one authorizing it by entering *72 and the number.  It can be cancelled by entering *73.
Please let others know about this type of crime so they do not fall for it.

*72 is call forwarding, at least for FIOS.  Of course you don't want to fowrard your calls to a jail, but don't see how that gives them free access.

  • Security Flaw on iPhone???

    Critical iPhone security flaw found
Fortify Software, a security firm, has uncovered a critical security flaw in the Apple iPhone which could lead to phishing attacks.
Because the iPhone only displays the first few characters of a URL in its Safari web browser, phishers could easily hide a fraudulent URL at the end of a link without the user even knowing it.
Even worse, the iPhone connects the browser and the phone in such a way that it may be possible to embed scam telephone numbers into a site to make the phone automatically dial the scam number.
Let’s hope Apple is working on a fix for this one because that is some scary stuff. Now, if you input addresses yourself and use bookmarks, the chances of being affected by this are relatively minimal. That said, watch out for strange emails and Google results — you can’t always trust that either.
Anybody read this? Any comments or thoughts??? Valid?

It's hardly a new flaw since disguising URLs in links has been common practice for some time. However, while the browser does indeed only show a limited number of characters from the URL being opened (more if in landscape mode than portrait) to get to the URL at all the user would either have to enter it manually, or encounter it in an email or web page where the full URL should readily be discovered.
It seems probable to me that over time, security holes will be found as in all accessible and discoverable devices on the internet. Based on experience with Apple and MacOS, I would have confidence that genuine weaknesses found in the iPhone will benefit from security fixes as expeditiously as possible.

  • 5 to 7 robocalls each day from different numbers but same scam

I get about 5 to 7 calles every day from something called "Senior Services" or "Medic Alert" or similar.  This has been going on for about a week now.  No two phone numbers are the same, and searching with Google on some of them showed some aren't even valid (how did the website know? I assume invalid area code/exchange combination).
    Examples are Senior Life {edited for privacy}, Med Alert Co {edited for privacy}, Senior Alert {edited for privacy}, and Dynamic Alert {edited for privacy}
Every one has the same recorded message, that I "won" a free medic alert device yada yada yada.  A web search shows this is a scam common the last few months.
It is a bit of a pain to delete all the messages left by this robocaller, and I fear accidentally missing a real message from someone as a result.
I have my number on the do-not-call list and have reported a few of the instances to FCC, for what it's worth.  It does no good to block the numbers as they are never used more than once.
Have we reached a point where phone calls coming from networks which Verizon can't verify the caller with certainty have to go through a voice "captcha" to connect?

First...all the phone numbers you entered have been automatically edited out by the forum software as a privacy protection policy so the best of idea--particularly as these are not personal phone numbers--is to run all the numbers together and then the forum software doesn't see it as a phone number and doesn't edit it out.
Unfortunately, as a new user you can't go and edit your original post--you have to post 5-6 times to be able to edit one of your own posts--to put the phone numbers run together back in but also, since I'm replying to your post, the forum software won't let you edit your original post even if you could.
    Welcome to the land of Alice...'-}}
So...post a reply and in it run each phone number together if you'd like to show others these slimey phone numbers...
I've also received those same robocalls and they are really annoying--how totally stupid do these people think we are? Verizon Digital Voice does offer the option of blocking phone numbers however, it's limited to 10 numbers and you can't, for example, specify an entire area code or an area code-exchange combo. Some people have recommended getting a call blocker although they are a bit pricey at just under $100. It may depend on how aggravated you are as to whether you want to spend that kind of money but if you do, here's a link to a call blocker that has decent reviews:

  • I got text messages from iCloudreport regarding my lost iphone , are they scams?

I lost my iphone two month ago and I got a lot of emails from "Find my iphone" saying that my phone has been found in at least three other different countries. Today I received a text message from a unknown phone number saying that: "Find my iphone service: your iphone 6 64Gb Gray lost/stolen has been found. You can reclaim it now at: https://icloudreport.com/?imk=3544070.....(8 more numbers)...., Apple Inc. " I clicked the link, it led me to this address"http://icloudreport.com" it looks the same as icloud home page. I feel this is suspicious because I really did not put any hope on my lost iphone been found. Is this a scam?
I then rechecked the emails that I received in the past and I found that some early emails I received are from "[email protected]". The link in this email direct me to "losticloud.com"  while the most recent emails are from "[email protected]" and the link in this email direct me to "icloudreport.com" (which is the same as that in the text message). Is any of the email I got is scam? I remembered I did login through the emails so I'm a little worried.

It's all fake. If you had set up 'Find My iPhone' you could find the phone yourself, provided it's on, not wiped, and able to connect to a network. If you didn't set it up you can't locate the phone and neither can anyone else. The emails are phishing, trying to con you into giving away your login.

  • Iphone 6 Trade-in program COMPLETE SCAM!!!!!!!!!!!!

The trade in program for the Iphone 6 seems to be one of the biggest scams I have ever seen from Verizon.  This is not only coming from personal experience, but from multiple sources of research.  I sent in a PERFECT condition iphone 4S (8GB).  I had the phone powered on the night before I mailed it in order to delete the "find my iphone" function, everything was in perfect working condition.  I got an email just the other day saying they are denying my full $200 refund due to me sending back the wrong phone.  The email stated I selected the 4s 8GB online when filling out the return information (which is correct, because I owned an 8GB 4s), but the email stated i actually sent back in a 16GB 4S that did not power on.  They refunded me $36 for a phone which clearly was not the phone I sent in.  So naturally i call the trade-in hotline, sit on hold for 25+ minutes and speak to a manger named Aaron who told me there is NOTHING he can do.  He also mentioned that they take pictures of the phones in the warehouse, and that in the pictures it CLEARLY SHOWS THE PHONE IS POWERED ON.  What flippin bullsh*t is Verizonplaying at?  Denying my refund saying it doesn't power on, when pictures show IT IS ON.  I literally went round and round with this Aaron and wasted an hour of my life getting nowhere.  He told me he has no power to issue a refund (which is a LIE, mangers do have this power).  My boyfriend had the exact same issue, received a $36 refund saying his screen was broke (when it was actually in perfect condition per the attached pictures on his submission).  The manager he spoke with, someone named Joe, argued with him but in the end issued him a refund for $164, the balance after his $36 refund.  I got nowhere, was told all they can do is escalate my issue.  I have spent the last few days researching this, and I am not alone.  There are so many forums online describing how this trade in program is a complete scam.  It screams CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT.  Verizon's warehouse is clearly not tracking phones correctly and denying claims based off of lies.  How can you deny my claim for full refund due to the phone not powering on, when the pictures show the phone ON?!?!?  I HATE Verizon and I should have left years ago.  I honestly would have never upgraded had I known what a terrible program this is.  I even showed my old 4s to a manager at a corporate Verizon store who looked over my phone when I placed my order for the new 6, I'm not stupid enough to send in a broken phone.  Shame on you Verizon.  If I don’t get my refund issued, this is the last straw with Verizon.  I don’t care how much the cancellation fee is, I’d gladly pay it in order to rid myself of this horrible company.  I spoke with a women Named Sheila on sunday who actually told me that I would get a full refund, she told me my phone was in perfect working condition.  She told me it would be issued by today first thing via email.  But of course I never received anything, just another customer service LIE from Verizon.  I told this to Aaron who just kept telling me he couldn't issue me the refund, lies on lies on lies! Has anyone else experienced this issue and if so, how did you rectify it?

I am also a victim.  I went through the online process and registered both our IPhone 4's on September 26th.  Somehow Verizon managed to remember to send us the iPhone 6's, yet they forgot that we registered for the rebate.  According to the rebate process which when completed, automatically directed me to the page where I ordered our IPhone 6's, we were going to receive $200 in gift certificates each for our iPhone 4's.  When we received the iPhone 6's, the enclosed documents stated that shipping materials would be sent to us within 5 business days and not to send in the phones until we received the shipping materials.  Amazing that they told us that information in the boxes containing the new phones, but when I call the department at Verizon that is running the rebate program, they can't remember that I went through the rebate process.  I copied down the order numbers for the new iPhones, but they said they needed the numbers that they emailed to me.  I have checked all our email accounts, including the Verizon email account I never use, as well as all the spam folders and I never received such an email.  Now they tell me I can go through the process again, however now it says they will only credit $27 each for the two phones.  No way would I agree to receive only $54, when the site previously stated I would receive $400 in rebates.  So, I guess I will have to wait for the class action lawsuit.  I have been with Verizon for several years, including cable and phone.  Why do they risk my business?  They charge more then anyone, yet I've paid extra to receive the best quality services.  Now I'm thinking I need to take my business elsewhere.   It seems that I am not the only one experiencing similar problems.  I guess Verizon feels the risk of a successful class action is worth the price they would have been obligated to pay to their good customers.  Honestly, if this attitude prevails, they will eventually go down.  People are getting sick of paying the exorbitant rates anyway.  Once they get ripped off like this, they are not going to take it anymore and they will just sign up with their competitors.  I hope everyone floods these websites with complaints.  Maybe, it will scare off some potential new customers.  At least make them pay, in some way.  Make sure you tell all your friends how you were ripped off by Verizon.  Honestly, I expect these complaints will be deleted by Verizon soon.

  • CBE collections debt, or phishing scam?

    Hello,
I've been a verizon customer since 2006.  I've kept the same number, but switched plans twice (from family to individual a couple years ago, and from individual to prepaid very recently).  About a month after switching to prepaid, I started getting calls (up to three times a day) from CBE collections group about an outstanding debt from verizon wireless of ~ $35.00.  I've always paid my bills online, using autopay.  When I checked my online account (which I've had for years), my balance was zero.  I've been to both of the local stores, and both told me as far as they could see, my account balance was zero and in good standing.  I've called verizon probably half a dozen times (with hold times up to an hour and multiple dropped calls), and talked to both customer care and financial services.  Everyone has been very confused, and told me my account is in good standing, and I owe verizon nothing, and they didn't know how to help me.  The most recent customer care rep actually told me with certainty that this sounded like a scam to her, and I should block the numbers and report it to the police.
When I've talked to CBE collections, they've told me they can't give me any kind of verification unless I give them my verizon account payment password (!!!).  However, they assure me that they are 'not a scam'.
Given my recent plan switch and the fact that CBE collections has a partnership with Verizon, I'm 90% convinced this is actually a legitimate bill that is being handled very badly.  I hope it's in fact a phishing scam-- if it's real, I am extremely angry about how it's been handled. I am very seriously considering changing providers.
Under the circumstances, I am hesitant to pay CBE without some kind of verification from Verizon.  How do I go about getting a written verification that this is a legitimate debt, when customer care has no information?  If it's not, how do I get a written verification that I can use to challenge any damage that CBE has done to my credit score?

CBE Group - Debt Collection Solutions
They are a legit company. But I would not give any account password or social security numbers or verify anything with them.
They could be zombie debt collectors or collectors that have no right to your Verizon account.
Go on line and get a free credit report from the three major credit reporting agencies for free once a year.

  • AT&T Scam?

New to the iPhone/AT&T thing. I just got my first months bill and was very surprised to see several errors.
First, there are several numbers that appear to be AT&T M2M sometimes, but not always. Maybe I am confused. . . either you ARE an AT&T customer and would be classified as M2M or you are NOT an AT&T customer and would NOT be classified as such, correct?
The second (and equally as disturbing) problem is that there are a few numbers that appear several times (always as incoming calls) on both my phone number and my fiancees phone number and these calls were never received. We've only had the phone 8 days, so it's been pretty easy to track (that, and the fact that the "calls received" feature doesn't list these numbers on either of our phones). Sometimes our accounts were just charged for 1 minute but most of the time both our accounts were charged for several minutes (as if we actually spoke to this person from MN). We called the number from our cell and it is no one we know and no one who knows us. I'm less concerned with the minimal amount of minutes we were charged with this month, but is this an issue everyone deals with? Should I be looking at my bill line-for-line every single month to make sure it isn't going to continue happening?
I'm NOT thrilled with AT&T so far. Apple, you could have signed a contract with a much more reliable (and honest) company.
    Jen

In response to the last post, I haven't made the statement that no other wireless providers have billing issues.
No you didn't, but the Subject of your post is "AT&T Scam?" and you wish Apple would have signed a contract with a more honest company.
I doubt at&t became the largest provider in the U.S. (by number of subscribers) by scamming and being dishonest with their subscribers. Billing errors/mistakes happen - it is a fact of life - especially with computers and human beings involved, but this doesn't mean this is an at&t scam and they are being dishonest.
Verizon let me out of my contract due to reception problems at my house without charging me an early contract termination fee - so they told me, but my last bill included the early contract termination fee. They weren't being dishonest or trying to scam me - it was a billing error which they corrected after I contacted them.
I venture to say Verizon also has similar billing errors from time to time, regardless if you never experienced anything like this with Verizon. I can locate some websites an blogs where existing and former Verizon subscribers call Verizon dishonest and scammers for whatever their reason.
More than likely, at&t will get it sorted out for you.

  • Scam Another Robo-call claiming to be VZW

Be careful people Phone calls have been going out from a scammer claiming that if you log onto www.my45verizon.com you can get a 45.00 credit on your bill, THIS IS A SCAM A ATTEMPT TO GAIN ACCESS TO YOUR VZW INFORMATION.................... BEWARE ... numbers showing in Caller ID 800-922-0204 be wary of anyone asking for your VZW information online and in emails VZW will never ask you for information like this as they ALREADY HAVE IT...... So if VZW wanted to give you a credit, gift, discount or anything like that they would more then likely do so in the REAL VZW CUSTOMER PORTAL........

"We" are not going to stop it, and as long as people fall for it, scammers will continue to try it.  All "we" can do is not respond, not get scammed ourselves, and warn others.
It's not just Verizon that's targeted, either.  Go to http://www.onlinethreatalerts.com/  and search for any of the cell carriers - or just about any company.  Scammers keep at it because it works often enough to make it worth their while to continue.

  • WARNING SCAM Phone Calls purporting to be from BT ...

At 08:55 today I received a phone call from 0800 169 1608. An Automated message was left purporting to be from BT and prompting me to press numbers on my keypad I.e. if I was the Account holder press 1 etc. As I was concerned it could be something important, I tried to recall the number but connected to another automated message again purporting to be from BT and that if required, they would ring back. After Googling the phone number I became suspicious and contacted BT directly to see if they had any knowledge about calling me. They informed me that it was not BT, it was a SCAM call and to email them at [email protected] with the details. According some entries on Google this scammier is trying to obtain Account details and God knows whatever else ! This afternoon I received a call back from the Real BT reassuring me that it was definately not them calling earlier and that they would be carrying out an investigation and would recontact me again in a few days time.

So before you or anyone you know falls victim to the scheme, bear these tips in mind:
•Be suspicious of unexpected phone calls asking for personal or financial information, regardless of who they claim to represent.
•Be warned that banks will never ask you for your PIN or online information over the phone.
•Know that your bank will never ask you to withdraw money to hand over or transfer to another account.
•Your bank will never send anyone to your home to collect cash, a payment card or a cheque book.
•If you’re worried that the call may be real, hang up and call your bank through a different phone line.
•If you think the call is a scam, take note of the caller’s phone number and report it to Callercenter.com. Spread the word and warn others.

  • Just a heads up on verizon scam

I just wanted to give everyone a heads up that there is yet another verizon scam going around. Just got a call from (800) 888 9617 saying I have won the verizon price or whatever said I won $123 off my bill,  then to log into vzw123.com. This is not real, someone just trying to rip people off.

I just received the same type of phishing scam call.  It was showing in the caller ID as 800-888-9620 and upon answer an automated recording indicated that Verizon was calling about a pending $123 refund check.  They indicated that I needed to visit vzw123.com and enter my account information to claim the check.  The recording played twice and the call disconnected.  Seems like there are a few variations of this scam floating around using a variety of spoofed caller id numbers (CSID) and a variety of websites addresses.

  • Reporting: Txt Message Phishing Accounts / Scam ac...

I don't know why on earth it's so hard to report suspected phishers/scammers (without credits on my account anymore I can no longer contact customer service).
    Anyway.
Some accounts are linked to some scam that sends SMS messages to people's phones, and has been associating individuals' names with their real phone numbers. The SMS messages ask the individuals to contact them on one of the following skype names.
    amanda.spencers
    Babbum8
    bam_25
    nikita_barnes
I'm not sure what happens if someone actually messages one of these accounts on Skype.

I got a similar text message yesterday:
"Hello <my name>! This is Jenny. Please add me on Skyype msgr so we can chat a bit, its: Bam_25"
The phone number listed as the source was 313-499-9157 though I assume that can be spoofed. I googled Bam_25 and came across this post.
While this doesn't necessarily indicate that my name and phone number was obtained via Skype, clearly this Bam_25 character (or someone that doesn't like him/her) is up to no good.

  • Text Scam? Lost/Recover Iphone

    Hello!
My wife lost/Stolen her iPhone 5s in Las Vegas abour 2 weeks ago. Today I recieved a text from 213-712-8384 in the text content it stated. (Apple Device Recovery Priotity Code LV3-R3 please verify below validation.byethost7.com) (01/02 this is a automated message from Apple store. someone has turned in a iphone, verification of ownership is required. once verifaction is complete,) (02/02 the iphone will be shipped to the mailing address on the account. Click the link to complete the verification process.)
when i clicked the link it sent me to a apple site to put in my apple id and i did. then it sent me back another text message.
(verification failed, please try again using the Apple ID and password associated with the silver iphone 5s.)
I'm sure i got scammed! but can they do anything with my apple id? besides getting into my itunes and apple accounts? just hoping they cant get into my other personal accounts. since then i have changed the password.

I put my number on the find my iPhone message thing that we sent to the phone. When i spoke to a representative at Apple, she transferred me to one of the supervisors (Celeste) and she helped me so much. She said that Apple does not send out those kinds of texts. And that they have been getting more calls about this type of situation and the reason they are probably texting us is because they can't unlock the phone unless they get our Apple information. She said just file the police report so that the serial number for your phone is in the database in case these ******** try to pawn the phone, the pawnshops are able to run serial numbers to see if its stolen. She also said in some cases the police have contacted apple when stolen phones are found so if the phone is stolen, always file the police report ASAP. What location were you at when you lost the phone? Restaurant? Mall? They stole my sister's phone out of her purse.

  • Scam: plugin Andromeda -PHOTO-TILER- for photoshop --be aware--

to everyone out there playing with the idea to purchase plug-ins.
i just got scammed / coned by Andromeda,   into buying a plug-in that doesn't work at all with photoshop and the company very smartly hides those little facts so hidden , that you will fall into the trap of buying it before you realise that it will only work with older indesign software , and that is  indesgin cs 2 at that  , and not even indesign 3 or 4.
it gets even worse..... more catastrophic,..if you have cs 4 , then cs2 indesign will not work anymore anyway, since cs 4 will delete cs 2 serial numbers from your computer ....
its the photo-tiler from andromeda i am talking about.  a whopping 79,00 $ later , and a escrutiating 31 days later , the owner finally responds to my complaint, and had nothing more to say than , the 30 day return money guarantee is over ....
so i got scammed on about 4 levels here....
i think anyone out there considering Andromeda plug-ins should be careful ,..very careful,....

Regular JPEG is capable of high definition (size) images.
The "HD" in "HD Photo" is a reference to the fact that the bit depth can
greatly exceed the 8-bit limitation of regular JPEG. That's primarily
of value in high-quality photo editing, and for archiving originals.

DVD player upconversion is no better than the upconversion built-in to
any decent HD TV; i.e., it's mostly just marketing hype.

  • Where are the serial numbers?

I just bought the family pack of Snow Leopard, and I'm a little confused why I did. There aren't any serial numbers. For all I can tell, I could have installed this on 100 computers. Is there some serial number built into the DVD so they are keeping track of where these get installed? Otherwise I feel like I got scammed out of $20, and could have just bought the $30 edition...

It's the Apple way. And allot of us like that.
When I upgrade to 10.6 I don't need to pull out my 10.0,10.1,10.2,10.3,10.4 and 10.5 serial numbers.
Also if I'm in a pinch and I need to reinstall on the road I don't need to worry about finding past serial numbers in order to install.
I can't begin to try and remember where all my serial numbers are for Windows. As a matter of fact I've lost so many **** install disks its wrong. What's worse is that when I need a disk for a particular model I can't find it. And an HP disk wont reinstall onto a Dell. This has caused me way too much frustration in the past.
With Apple, I buy the disk, Make a copy onto my hard drive and I always have a copy around if one fails. If I loose the one for my laptop the same one will restore my desktop.
So while there are people who will rip off Apple the $20 it saves everyone else added aggravation when the rare circumstance arises that mandate an reinstall.
And for that *Thank you Apple!*
