Scraping Confidential Data in Software Simulation

I wondered whether other folks have encountered this issue in development. I have captured confidential information from live environments, however, when the number of slides captured approaches 100 or more the concept of scarping that confidential data from 100 slides seems daunting. The only process I have arrived at is literally pulling each image into Photoshop or even MS Paint and hand editing each field. The problem of course is that getting the text and backgrounds to match on each slide and avoiding "screen flicker" is nearly impossible. Has anyone else encountered a similar problem? If so, other than using a training or development environment have you found any other solution?
Thanks,
Dfwenigma

First thank you so much for the suggestion. Unfortunately I have run into this same issue before and your suggestion works so well - when the purpose is to mask information in web or cloud type environments. This problem is much stickier. I have tried the solutions you suggested - in fact I think somehow developers I have worked with in the past either stumbled into the suggestion you made themselves or alternately found it here.
This is stickier. These are nasty old legacy systems. Think 1960 - 1970 and you are in the ballpark. These run through an emulator (usually TN3270 style emulators) and the legacy system is black with green lettering. These are those nasty old systems where you put an "X" to select menus and submenus and use "PF" keys to navigate. They are quite common (still) in banking, finance, the government sector - the list goes on and on - and I encountered them in the telecommunications industry (believe it or not) about fifteen years ago.But I still see them and the issue I encounter is still pervasive.  I thought they had gone the way of the dinosaur years ago. But alas, their demise is not to be. I can imagine folks in back offices at your banking institutions with home-grown applications like this - to this day - not clicking away with mice but happily running "server" side scripts with their PF keys. The results are not pretty for the end users and I'm not so sure the bullet-proof nature of these software applications is so snappy either. But that's another discussion. The theory I think is that if the world ended tomorrow these systems would survive. Besides these systems are secure (wink, wink).
One would think the solution is simple, just follow your instructions, replace the font and you're done. Any green font with the blank background (embedded) as you suggest. But alas, 'tis not the case dear reader. No this dragon is ugly. The lettering is green and bitmapped. And I have found no possible way to recreate the font. I think even if you bought font the problem would be that the letters would not be 8, 9, 10, 11 or 12 point - they would be some odd size that would be difficult to match due to screen resolution.
The problem of course is that the fields will be different each time. So as one records the simulation one advances from one field to another. One then must change the data in each screen. This is not peculiar by the way to any particular engagement - I have seen this beast and tried to slay it at least five times in my career - and thought it was dead, dead, dead until recently. However, it persists, it is pernicious, it is pervasive it is ugly, ugly, ugly.
If you or any folks here could suggest the fix for the green bit-mapped font - such that it adapts to the limitations of a black screen, is even and blends well with the screen shot - great. But I cannot see how one finds this type of bit-mapped font. I would be very surprised if anyone has recreated it and I would be very interested to see a solution that will look accurate on screen.
Here's a link to a screen shot - not my screen shot - but one from a sales catalog at a website - this one is "hawking" TN3270 emulators - the screen shot is a perfect example of the myriad systems I have seen - hopefully it illustrates what I am trying to illustrate here verbally:
http://www.sdisw.com/tn5250-ss.html
The example shot in the URL (provided above) does not have confidential data on it - it is simply a sample of the types of systems I have encountered, tried to capture and then been unable to edit properly. The reader will have to imagine the text with confidential data that must be replaced. Sadly many of these systems (though not all) were not built with training environments or those environments perhaps are not updated because the intention is to replace the legacy system - so there is little value in reinventing the wheel.
If this were easy folks - I would not post it here. I did not find it easy - if you dear reader find it decidedly so - please show me your meddle - because I am eager to find a response that will actually solve this beastly problem and slay the dragon.

  • Best way to do software simulation

Hey guys, it's taking me faaaaar too long to create my first software simulation and I wondered if I could get some advice? I arrived at captivate because I was initially using Screenflow, then AE to edit my captions/audio/intros and the large video files caused problems with previewing/rendering. I basically want to use captivate's screenshots and mouse paths to keep the file size down so I can easily work on some post production in flash. But... If I export to flash from captivate, the mouse clicks and motion paths are not recorded. If I 'publish' from captivate and import the swf into flash, it crashes Flash, even with the smallest clip. I've updated to the latest captivate version but same problems. What is the normal way to record and edit a screencast with captivate? Does anyone know why all data isn't exporting to flash? Do I HAVE to use captivate for post production and then export for the web?  Any info appreciated, thanks guys

I have exported from Captivate to Flash with no issues, but that was a while ago (circa Captivate 3 or 4 obviously under Windows). As Lilybiri said, I can do most of what I want using Captivate alone. If you are having trouble exporting to flash or exporting to swf and importing to flash, give us more to go on. What version of Captivate, what OS, what version of Flash?
What extra editing are you trying to do under Flash, perhaps we can recommend a workflow that keeps everything in Captivate?

  • Is anyone else trying to use Edge Animation to create software simulations?

We're in the process of evaluating Edge Animate to create software simulations. We want to use it because it has many great HTML5 functions. We're also evaluating Captivate7 - which also has an HTML5 option - but it lacks some of the functionality we're looking for. Like the ability to show users a 'hint' when they hover their cursor over an object. Why that functionality isn't there already - I still can't figure out. It would be create if Adobe could take some of the functionality in Edge Animate and incorporate it into Captivate! It would make an awesome product!
If you're attempted or were successful creating a software simulation using Edge Animate - I would be interested in hearing how you accomplished it. Also looking for some best practices around this idea.
I think Edge Animate would be an amazing product for software simulation if it incorporates a few enhancements.
In the timeline - allow the user to nest things. The timeline can get unwieldy quickly. Would be nice to be able to nest items and then twirl the nested items to hid them - like in AE.
Enable AE functionality with the ability to play one Edge Animate piece inside another.
Provide the ability to add video with transparent backgrounds. We wanted to have someone walk on screen and appear as if they were walking on the software. Can't do it in Edge Animate!
If you have any other ideas or suggestions for creating software simulations in Edge Animate - would be great to hear from the community

    Hi there,
Thanks for your suggestions! We're looking at ways to make the timeline more flexible as far as nesting and/or hiding elements, so hopefully these types of improvements will come as Animate continues to grow. Just wanted to quickly pop in to address a few of your bullet points - hopefully, other Animate users can answer regarding whether they use Animate for software simulation.
Your first two points (I think) can be at least somewhat addressed by using symbols. Each symbol has its own timeline which can contain many elements, but it will appear as a single element in the main (Stage) timeline.
Regarding video, there's currently only one HTML5 browser that natively supports video with alpha transparency: Chrome, using video encoded to the webm format. See here for more info: Alpha transparency in Chrome video - HTML5Rocks Updates
Once other browsers start incorporating native support for video with transparency, this could be pretty cool. But as of now, native browser support is still quite limited.
    Thanks,

Hello, Everybody, I'm using Adobe Captivate 7. I want to show quiz results after recording the software simulation. If the recording type is training, the user need to click for the instructions. • My computer somehow restarted then deleted all my progress from Word documents. Is there any way to get these documents back without purchase of a data recovery software?

Recently when I open my Mac the screen stays black until I press the start button a few times. Usually at this point it's in sleep mode. This time, however, the computer restarted completely, losing any word documents that I had left open prior. Is there any way I can recover these files without a purchase of a data recovery software? I've tried looking in the 'recent' tab, but it didn't save anything I have done in the last week, and finals are this coming week. Please help!

If the system just Restarted on it's own, Shut down while you were working on something then started back up all those changes, edits, you had done in that app, document, are gone.

Data Recovery Software for the Zen Vision M:
Has anyone had any success recovering lost sound files from a Vision M, with software, physical repair services, or otherwise? Does anyone claim to be able to recover information from these devices?
The data recovery programs I have tried fail to recognize the dri've, since it doesn't show up in list of dri'ves for some reason (Is there a way to make this show up?). Any suggestions/ recommendations would be greatly appreciated as I lost over a year of recordings after an unexpected forced reformatting. How would one even go about finding someone for this job?

A friend of mine has saved ALL of her precious work on a USB pen, which for no apparent reason has stopped working!
It isn't being recognised by windows, but my mac is detecting it with trial software which I cannot buy on my measly student income. Not doable.
Is there any data recovery software available for macs which detect microsoft documents which is....ummm free?
It's beginning to drive me mad I've been looking at this stupid pen for ages. But my mate has offered me 50 quid if I get it sorted, so I am persevering! Any help would be appreciated guys!

You can try the free Demo version of Data Rescue. It does not detect Word files; it's looking for anything on the device that matches the criteria you set.
    Hope this helps,

  • Data recovery software? Help?

I lost most data and pics because I didn't backup first before recovering. In November I accidentally deleted all texts from my friend, and I tried to fix last night but ended up making things worse. Is there anything I can do to get all my data and pics back? I've researched data recovery software but not sure it's safe. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks

  • How do i remove popups in software simulation - captivate 8

    Hi,
I have recently moved to captivate 8 - straight from captivate 4. I have recorded a software simulation and am now in the process of editing it. On some screens captivate has captured the popup messages you get when you hover over a button or link, in the past in captivate 4 i would copy the background out of captivate, remove the pop using paint or photoshop and paste the edited background back in to the simulation.
In captivate 8 i finding i am unable to do this. When i preview the screen capture the pop up message appears, however when i look at the background there is no pop up. It seems to be there as part of the screen capture, if i use the skimmer to run over the timeline the popup appears in the last few seconds, if i trim the slide of the seconds the pop up remains. I have been unable to find any options for removal of the pop ups.
Does anyone have a solution for this problem?
    Thanks
    Glenn

Yeah, somehow those tooltips are animated in the background slide.
My fix: edit that background slide in Photoshop, ensure it shows what you want (i.e. not the tooltip), copy (or save) that flattened background image, back to Captivate, create a new slide after the 'odd' one, paste the background slide (merge with background), copy over any other elements from the 'odd' slide...then delete the odd slide.
There is an option to capture tool-tips or not, I believe, in the capture setup/preferences...

  • Help please: DAQWare or data logging software (multichannel data capture) questions

I am writing regarding DAQWare, data logging software, and the PC-LPM-16
board, which a group of us a trying to come to grips with. This is rather
    lengthy, I'm afraid...
We are a group of college students in a computer programmer/analyst
program. We have a course that involves doing a project to go through the
software development lifecycle (or as much of it as can be done in a term).
For our project we teamed up with a group in the industrial hygiene
program; they have a computer (standalone) with a PC-LPM-16 (PnP) DAQ board
and the NI-DAQ software (all of this has been around for a few years, but
has not been used much), and our goal was to capture the data they are
measuring (atmospheric pollutants) to an Microsoft Access database.
We are not familiar with DAQ systems, but were shown the software they had
installed. This included DAQWare (appears to be version 2.0). We thought
we could use DAQWare to log data to a text file, which we then would import
into the Access database. We came up with VBA code to parse the ASCII text
file created, but have run into one problem: DAQWare does not timestamp
each sample, but only puts a single timestamp in the header information.
Now we could extrapolate the time for each line based on the sample rate,
except that sometimes it seems to put in 8 values per sample, sometimes 12
values. For instance, in the sample of a text file below, the capture was
run for 1 minute at a sample rate of 60, and there were 480 measurements in
the file, or 8 lines of measurements per sample. (At a sample rate of 100,
we got 800 measurements in the file etc.) This was two weeks ago. Today,
we returned to capture more data, and DAQWare was logging 12 measurements
per sample (so at a sample rate of 100, we ended up with 1200 lines of
measurements). We do not know where this factor of 8 or 12 is coming from
or how it got changed in the two weeks between captures. We would like to
be able to have them just run DAQWare, for days on end if they wanted,
capture the data to file, then use our code to parse the text file into the
database, but if we cannot put timestamps on the readings, there seems no
    point.

Regarding this attempt to use DAQWare:
    1. Can you tell us where this factor (8 or 12 or however many more readings
than we would expect) means, where it is read from or set?
    2. Is there an updated version of DAQWare that we should download that
    would be better?
    3. Is there some other existing software that we can download to use to
perform basic logging of multichannel analog input to a text file (with
    timestamp)?
I realise that the software comes with tools (DLL functions) that one can
use to create custom software to interface with the DAQ board, but in the
limited amount of time we have we are not sure we can learn enough about
these functions to write our own datalogging software.
However, to see if I could grasp the basics, I have looked through the
examples for Visual Basic and think that a program would run something like
    this:
    1. at the beginning, use LPM16_Calibrate to reset the board
    2. configure acquisition with DAQ_Config
    3. start acquisition with Lab_ISCAN_Start
    4. loop to check is acquisition done with Lab_ISCAN_Check
    5. once sampling done, write data out to file
    6. loop back up to 3 to get next lot of samples
Unfortunately, a sample app using Access and VBA I created came back with
an error telling me it could not find nidaq.dll (even though this is in the
Windows system directory); probably it is not a good idea to try to do this
in Access in the first place. I am going to have a go using Delphi, which
    I know a bit better.
One thing I am unsure of is what the numbers will be coming out of
Lab_ISCAN; the reference file seems to indicate they will be binary
readings, not voltages, and I wonder how to correlate these with instrument
measurements (the instrumentation people we going to set it up so that
    1mV=1ppm).
Any help you can give to point us in the right direction would be
    appreciated.

  • Problem with multiple output for software simulated project

When a software simulated project in captivate is published more than thrice, the output is not generated properly, i.e not in-line with the project. Is this a problem with my system or due to some settings in captivate which is not activated?

  • Published software simulation not displaying correctly when published

    Hello,
When viewing a Captivate 6 software simulation either through the Preview mode or when published, screens will 'break up' at different points - part of the previous screen will stay in view when it moves to the next screen. This doesn't happen for the first couple of times it is viewed, which is a worry as you never know who/when it is going to happen.
Once the projects is copied over to a new blank project it will be fine for a few views and then do the same again - it is not always at the same place.
Does anyone know what may be causing this?
    Thanks,

You might try de-selecting the Advanced Project Compression option in the preferences:

  • Phantom Lines in CP (6.1.0.319) Software Simulations

Does anyone else have a problem with phantom lines showing up in their published CP software simulation slides?
They don't display in my previewed copy, but do in the published SWF... and only in my software simulations, not in non-recorded slides.
To see what I'm referring to, here are two screen shots. The first one shows (SWF) the phantom lines and the second one (preview) with without any phantom lines.
    (LINES)
    (NO LINES)
Any suggestions for correcting this problem?

These are usually caused by Captivate compressing the SWF file.  You can try Edit -> Preferences-> Swf Size and Quality, an de-select the compression options.  Then republish.

  • ThinkPad Bluetooth with Enhanced Data Rate Software Problem

    I'm having a weird issue. I use a X200t tablet with Windows 7 Profession 64-bit.
Apparently my current "ThinkPad Bluetooth with Enhanced Data Rate Software" is Version. 6.2.1.2900.
Thinkvantage System Update wants me to download and install Version 6.2.1.3100.
However, it tries and I get Error 1935 and it rolls back. Now when I start windows I get an alert about BTTray.exe not loading.
Of course I searched this problem, but it seems to be some ancient thing (years old) and I've never had a problem before with any of the Bluetooth updates.
I did notice that in past versions people said when they tried to uninstall the old version and install the new one, it just wiped their hard drive. I don't want to risk that so I thought I'd check here if anyone knew what was going on.
    Thanks!
