Screen gone dead.. How do I retrieve info using another screen?

I dropped my laptop about a foot. It was enough to cause the connection with the screen to die. The hardware seems fine because it starts up and shuts down seemingly normally but the screen is a blank light grey.
I have a cinema display.
When it is plugged into my macbook it is set to "extend".
I was wondering if there was a way I could make the cinema display "mirror" the macbook display using commands or something.
Any advice much appreciated.

I don't know if there's a keyboard shortcut for this, but if you don't find one, give a PRAM reset a try. Shut down MBP, and while holding down the command and option and p and r keys, boot the MBP and wait until you hear the startup chime twice. I don't know if this will reset the display prefs or not (and I'm on vacation with no external monitor to try it), and if it does, still not sure if it will default to recognize your monitor, but I'd sure give it a try. Do a restart with monitor still attached if it doesn't work the first time.
Another option may be to boot in FireWire Target Disk Mode and see if you can change the prefs through the Host Mac. Again, I have no way to test this at present.

Have you failed to use the device as designed?
If using the iPhone as designed, contacts are synced with a supported application on the computer or a cloud service. Pictures taken with the device would be copied off to the computer on a regular basis.
If you have been using the device as designed, simply sync the content back.
If you have not been using the device as designed, you can try restoring from the most recent backup. However, if that does not restore them, they are gone.

If you mean iOS, select the iOS device in iTunes then click Update.

Unless you had enabled Find My iPhone on it before it was lost then there isn't any way to locate it (it can only be turned on directly on the phone, it can't be done remotely). If you did enable it then you could try locating it either via http://icloud.com on a computer or Find My iPhone on another device - but that will only work if it's connected to a network and the device hasn't already been wiped and/or Find My iPhone disabled on it.
If you think that it was stolen then you should report it to the police. You should also change your iTunes account password, your email account passwords, and any passwords that you'd stored on websites/emails/notes etc.

Since you have two accounts, it would be best to just have Spotify close that account and have them transfer all your music to your new account. How does that sound? If you contact the accounts team through the online contact form and provide the account username with the e-mail address, date of birth, and zip code on the account then they should be able to do it for you! If you receive an automated e-mail directing you back to the community, just reply to it and you should receive a reply from a representative within 24-48 hours.

There is a file in the iTunes library folder that contains your playlist information is the iTunes Library.xml file.
Try and find the file, usually located in one of these locations depending on your OS:
Operating System
Default location of iTunes Folder
Mac OS X
/Users/[your username]/Music
Microsoft Windows XP
\Documents and Settings\[your username]\My Documents\My Music\
Microsoft Windows Vista
\Users\[your username]\Music\
Microsoft Windows 7
\Users\[your username]\My Music\
Then you can import this file to your iTunes Library like this:
1. Choose File > Library > Import Playlist.
2. Navigate to the "iTunes Library.xml" file
3. Windows users: Click Open.
If your Podcasts list in iTunes is empty after following these steps, learn how to add them back into iTunes.

so here is the problem is actually my wife account. She created an apple id using her work email, and she had $73 something on her itunes, well four months ago she changed job so she changed her apple id to a gmail account, last weekend i helped to switch all the apps over to the new account, so i deleted all the apps that were attached to the old account, and when i started to download the same apps with the new account we discovered that the balance was $0 ???
what happened to it and how can i retrieve it? I have tried to call Apple customer service but they told me to submit a question here...
please help. i mean if it was 5 bucks i wouldnt mind but you know?????

This is rapidly becoming a FAQ with the IOS 5 upgrade and the strong push to make Apple IDs be email addresses. Those of use with "short ids" who followed the rules and changed to email address ids are screwed, at least as far as I can tell - the apps are tagged with the old short id and now update can't work because that ID no longer works. I've exchanged several emails with support, and they just don't seem to get it.
This is, of course, also related to the other main FAIL of Apple IDs - they can't be consolidated - many of us have one from buying hardware, another from iTunes, yet another from iPad/iPhone, etc.
So - does ANYONE, including Apple have even a vague notion of how to get apps associated with a new defunct Apple ID to update?

How do you retrieve items using Firefox Sync

I installed Sync some time ago when X-Marks said they were no longer doing it.
I have it installed and customized but can't figure out how I would retrieve my stored passwords, etc in the event I need to.
I read some of the articles on the Mozilla site but still can't figure it out.
Is there a web site for retrieval of my info as there was with X-Marks?

How can I make Firefox use another installed Java runtime version?

For development purposes I have several Java runtime versions on my Windows 7 64 bit machine. I try to keep the number of installed JDKs and JREs to a minimum and I want Firefox to use JRE 1.7.0_21 (32 bit) since this came with a JDK version I am forced to use for another application.
Firefox however uses JRE 1.6.0_31, and correctly reports this as insecure. It offers me the option to upgrade, but I do not want to download and install another JRE since I already have said JRE 1.7.0_21 installed. I would highly prefer to just be able to point Firefox to that JRE. I don't see an option to select another installed JRE however.
I have already attempted to manually modify the pluginreg.dat file (I know, it says Do not edit...) by changing the JRE 1.6 entries to JRE 1.7, but upon restart my edits were overwritten and the old JRE was back. As a result I cannot view certain web sites (also corporate/internal) without having to switch to lesser browsers.
Please let me know how I can make Firefox use the already installed JRE 1.7.

I was able to successfully add the JRE 1.7 plugin to Firefox by modifying the existing JRE 1.6 registry entries, but I would not recommend this procedure to users that are less confident in registry editing. Too bad there is not a more user friendly way to do this.
Unfortunately the Java applet I'm trying to view is still not displayed. I've dug a bit deeper and found that the applet explicitly specifies an older JPI version (1.5.0_02). AFAIK Firefox cannot deal with this if its installed JPI (now 1.7.0_21) does not match the version requested. So either I'm going to have to dig up this older JPI version and install that too, or just switch to an alternative browser to be able to view this applet.

Hi! I was browsing my facebook account when my iphone 3G restarted on its own. The apple icon appeared and when the "restarting" process was over, I lost all my installed apps, the contents of my phonebook were gone, all text meassages saved were also gone. I upgraded to OS5 yesterday and all my contacts including names, email addresses, and phone numbers have been deleted. When I tried to revert to a previous back up, the only one was the one that was done right before I downloaded the new OS. All other previous backups were gone. In addition, I bought 40.00 worth of extra storage space to back up to iCloud and had to start it over several times before it finally worked...25 hours later!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am MAD that the new OS download procedure deleted EVERYTHING in my contacts. The only thing that remains are my favorited phone numbers but none of them are labeled so I have no idea who anyone is except I sort of know where some people were on the list. This is HORRIBLE and so far I've seen hundreds of these exact kinds of posts all over the Net, not just here on the Apple website. I've done everything I could on my own and tried several things that have been suggested by other Apple users here in the forum. Nothing has worked and evidently nothing was saved to my iCloud storage, either. Now I'm having to pay for a 1pm phone call with tech support that I'm sure will cost me a freaking fortune to tell me that I'm screwed-and that'll be 75.00, please.

iPhoto '11 randomly crashes after importing/editing/organizing photos and videos. When it does, photos and videos that I've been working on are gone. Pictures taken with iOS devices can be retrieved if they are still in Photo Stream, but videos are gone. Is there anyway I can retrieve photos and pictures that are not saved before iPhoto crashes? Also, is there anyway to prevent it from crashing? It seems iPhoto '11 is doing this since the day 1 I started using it. Thank you.

Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library
this should help with the crashes - it may or may not help with the missing videos

Previously backed up icloud contacts,... GONE. How do I retrieve them? They're not on icloud, but were once before,...?

I recently got a replacement iphone and backed up all my contacts on icloud to the phone. I had over 200 contacts saved. This morning I had all of my contacts, now they are gone. My phone was in my locker the entire day, I did not touch any settings. Now my contacts are gone! I even went to icloud on the internet and they aren't there any more! What happened?! I'm so confused... There has to be a way to get them back, since they were once saved. Please help!

If they do not show when logging into icloud.com, they are gone. Are you certain that you (or someone with your login credentials) did not delete them from the web interface?
