Screen remains dim after waking up on virtual terminals

I am having a strange issue when the display gets dim and won't get bright again, but only when I am no a vt.
I have an older (~4 yrs) Dell Studio 1737 with a Mobility Radeon inside with the xf86-video-ati driver:
$ lspci | grep -i vga
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] RV635/M86 [Mobility Radeon HD 3650]
$ pacman -Qq | grep xf86-video
xf86-video-ati
$ lsmod | grep radeon
radeon 754282 2
ttm 65132 1 radeon
drm_kms_helper 35086 1 radeon
drm 229990 4 ttm,drm_kms_helper,radeon
i2c_algo_bit 5391 1 radeon
i2c_core 22479 6 drm,i2c_i801,drm_kms_helper,i2c_algo_bit,radeon,videodev
When I leave my computer on one of the virtual consoles (vt2 - vt6) and it is idle for (I think) 10 minutes, it gets dim (via DPMS, I guess?) . However, I can't make it go bright again - after I move the mouse (which I am not sure makes any sense since I have no mouse in the vts) / press any key, nothing happens.
Now, the strange thing is, when the light is right, I can just see the text, but it is very, very dark and unreadable. Under normal circumstances I can see nothing and the screen can't be told apart form a blank black display. Actually, I had thought it was blank for a while until only recently, when I had the Sun shining against the display.
I wrote a simple script whose name is 'b':
echo 10 | tee /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness
and I left the console as root (!) for 10 minutes (!) and when the screen went dim I called 'b' and nothing happened. I have no other ideas about how deal with this one - I tried reading and looking around, and have pretty much nothing. Does this problem ring any bells? Does anybody know how this can be fixed (apart from "just don't leave it on the vt for longer than 10 mins" or similar ;d - these have occurred to me already). Of course, if you need any more information about my hardware, I will provide it.
I am running a constantly updated arch.

From the news page here...
http://xlr8yourmac.com/
See if it's related to this...
It also seems to be related to later OSX versions, like 10.8.x & 10.9.x
The 2012 macs (and later apparently) (also later OSX versions on earlier Macs can do it also), not waking normally from sleep after hours being in sleep. (noted here ...

The sleepimage file still reappears even if never slept. Delete it (hibernate off, etc) - within minutes its back.

  • Screen remains blank after waking

    I have a Z10 that is unresponsive after waking up sometimes. As far as I know, there are no background apps running to cause this issue. There is a similar known issue reported here but pressing/holding the power button does not offer any options, and the device just reboots. I have restored the device to factory defaults to see if this issue can be resolved this way. However, this is the second device that we have had an issue with. The user is synced with an Exchange server if that makes any difference. I have also disabled the swipe to unlock feature which did not fix the problem either.
    Is this a known issue among users? Are there any steps to resolve this issue without having to reformat the device each time it comes up?

    Hey talanz,
    Do you have a protective case on the iPhone? If so, it may be covering the proximity sensor. Trying removing the case. http://www.apple.com/iphone/features/index.html#sensor
    You can also try to reset or restore the iPhone.

  • Screen appears dimmer after waking from sleep

    Hi
    Recently, I've noticed the brightness of the 24" screen is dimmer after waking from sleep, regardless of the brightness setting in the Display preferences. If I restart the computer, the regular brightness returns. Curious if anyone else is seeing this happen on their Aluminum iMac?

    This is normal. As already stated, after waking from Sleep, your screen gradually intensifies brightness until it reaches its full brightness setting. Sort of how GE Soft White Bulbs take a couple of minutes to warm up to achieve their final Lumens.
    The reason it's instantly Bright upon Restart is that the machine goes through an initialization upon bootup where it performs a complete system check and ensures all settings are initialized and set according to your preferences. When Sleep is enabled (something I RARELY ever do) the machine lowers all operational parameters and upon waking, it slowly gets back up to speed.
    Just like how putting drives to sleep causes severe lag once woken up before you can perform all functions at full speed.
    Activating your screen saver is the best option.

  • Ibook G4 screen remains dimmed

    My iBook G4 screen remains dimmed as if it is about to go to sleep all the time, but in fact I am in the process of using it. Everything looks slightly darker than it is.

    Hi again, try using the F2 button, it should make your screen brighter and the apple light on the back of your screen should light up too, then when your comp is inactive it will dim as usual, then when you use it it should go back to noraml brightness - or at least its worked for me! hope this is helpful

  • Screen remaining blurred after Alert dismissed [EDITED]

    I've got something really quirky going on. Much of the time, when I use an alert, the screen remains blurred after the Alert has been dismissed. Has anyone run into this?
    I had assumed that I could only close a TitleWindow after all the code I want executed was complete or the destruction of the popup would interfere. Testing doesn't seem to support that. So will something like this work without interfering with subsequent code? Will the event dispatch still take place regardless of timing issues? (disregard syntax errors below, just talking conceptual here).
    protected function doSomething():void{
         PopupManager.removePopup(this);
         dispatchEvent(new Event("myEvent"));

    I had this problem since months, and no one even was able to have any stab at it.
    I updated the original post with more details.

  • Screen remains on after bringing it to my ear during a call (After ios 7 update)

    Screen remains on after bringing it to my ear during a call (After ios 7 update)

    Try these steps:
    Screen will not lock or go black when answering calls
    Verify mute or speaker have not been activated, just prior to placing your ear over the receiver.
    While on a call hold your hand over the top third of the display, and verify that the screen is locked or goes to sleep.
    Try turning iPhone off and then on again.
    (from http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2802)
    You might also want to try a reset:
    Reset: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

  • Macbook pro screen dims after waking from sleep?

    Does anyone know why my macbook pro screen dims when waking from sleep or waking from my screen saver? I can't get it to stop doing this. Thanks.

    It sounds like I have the same thing happening. It's more like the colors are washed out, like there is less contrast. I have a hot corner set up for my screen saver. Once I activate the screen saver for a second and then deactivate it, the Macbook screen goes back to normal. I have a 30" Samsung 305T monitor set up as a second (main) screen for when I'm working at home, which is most of the time. I haven't had it unplugged from the Macbook since this started, so I don't know if it happens by itself. I do know that the Samsung looks fine when waking up from the screen saver at the same time.
    I tried to find others with this problem in this forum, but got tired of looking through all the other posts that had nothing to do with this problem.
    Can anyone help us?

  • Imac screen will dim after leopard install

    Since installing leopard on my imac the screen will dim a small amount after awhile and then when I star to use the mouse it will brighten up again. Is this normal with leopard?
    My Mac pro dors not do this.
    Thank you
    Dcik

    Ever since I installed Leopard on my iMac G5, periodically the screen will dim. This seems to be random, and not related to any specific program I might be running. The screen dims to the pre-sleep level, and doesn't brighten in response to anything I do other than sleep the computer and wake it again--no keystrokes or mouse clicks have any effect. I've tried everything in the Energy Saver prefs, and nothing seems to make any difference. Fortunately it doesn't happen all the time, or it'd be a real nuisance, but for that reason it would also be difficult to reproduce the effect for a repair person, in the event that it's a hardware problem. Has anyone else encountered this?

  • T510 screen brightness dims after startup

    I've noticed this on our company's new T510's we're getting.  When you start them up, the screens look to be full brightness.  But after a few seconds, the screen dims half way or so and you must manually Fn+[Home] to make it brighter.
    How do you change the default way this is set up so that it doesn't go dim after a few minutes?  Thanks.

    Hi and welcome to the forum!
    You can use lenovo Power Manger to create a new power scheme or modify the existing one to change such settings. Switch to Advanced mode to do so.
    Hope this helps.

  • Screen is dim after software update

    For the last day and a half, my MacBook screen won't go to full brightness. I have the power connected and I've rebooted and I'm using the screen, but it's still in "power save" or dim mode. It used to be that the screen would dim on battery power after a few minutes of not typing. Now it's just always dim.
    The last thing I did before this happened was install some software updates that I was prompted to install. It says the System Version is Mac OS X 10.5.6 (9G66) but I'm not sure what all it upgraded Saturday night (there were like 12 downloads).
    Maybe I can use Time Capsule to back out the upgrade and see if that helps, though the one time I tried to do that was a nightmare.....

    You can't use the brightness key on the keyboard to increase brightness?
    Also, try a SMC and PRAM reset. Shut down, unplug the magsafe, take out the battery, and hold down the power button for at least five seconds. Next, put everything back and start up holding command-option-p-r until it chimes twice. Then let it start up normally.

  • Screen remains black after power on

    Brand new MacBook Pro 17"  Unibody.  I powered down last night and this morning on power up the screen remained blank (no visible faint displays).  Keyboard backlight was on.  Startup "noise" normal.
    Battery was fully charged when shutdown.
    Power cycled several times with no success.  Removed all attachments including the power cord and after several attempts it finally powered on with a good screen display.
    VERY frustrating experience.  I have older 15" MBP and an iMAC and have never experienced this before.
    Is there a patch/fix for this?  Running 10.7.1 factory installed OS.
    Is there some recourse to this?  Should I take MBP to Genius desk?  Can they investigate/eliminate the problem?

  • Screen remaining blank after reopening lid (after 10.5.2 update)

    Hello
    after (successfully) updating from 10.5.1 to 10.5.2 several relevant problems appeared.
    One is that closing the lid while the computer is on, and then reopening it later, the screen remains blank instead of coming to life. It is possible that the computer itself went to sleep and does not return, but the only way to get back is to press the on button for a few seconds to turn it off the hard way.
    The other problem is described in a separated post. Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    Marinho.

    me too, and I'm about to go nuts. There are tons of people having this issue, I fixed it temporarily by changing my hibernate mode (from 3 to 0) using terminal, everything worked great until the last update, now it's acting up again. Now, if I close my lid, and unplug something, or plug something, it gives me the startup sound (sounds like something moving) and won't come back if I open the lid.
    There has got to be a solution. APPLE, FIX THIS. THIS IS RIDICULOUS.

  • My macbook pro screen remains grey after latest firmware update

    i just had the update notification for the latest firmware, proceeded to do so, and the screen remains grey, its been more than one hour and still grey, since its a firmware update i don't want to disturb it, but could it be that is taking so long?

    Reboot it by pressing the power button down hard to force a shutdown.
    If your still having problems, take it to Apple. I hope you have AppleCare becuase if they can't fix it, it's a new logicboard.

  • Screen auto-dims (after idle time)

    Is there any way to turn off this 'feature'? It's very frustrating whenever I'm trying to watch a movie (say from nova online) or anything like that, I'd rather it be entirely in my control. (this is more than just environmental light detection, it's just randomly going dim after about 30 seconds of not being used.....very frustrating.
