SD Card read only [Solved]

Hi,
Do not think its an Arch related problem but I have an SD Card which will only mount read-only
mount: block device /dev/sdh2 is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdh2,
missing codepage or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so
It states card is write-protected it not write locked, of course not being able to write to the card I cannot reformat it.
Just wondered if card was faulty? or can I repair the filesystem on it? [ext3]
Thanks

  • PCMICA Media Card Reader only mounts once per session

After I restart and insert my PCMICA media card reader will show up on the desktop but only once. After I eject the card and reinstall it will not show up on the desktop. The card appears in the menu bar but no where else not on the desktop or in a finder sidebar. It acts like it is permanently ejected. The only solution is to restart which is time consuming during a photo-shoot (Sleep/Wake and Finder Relaunch do not solve this). I have two media card readers one for CF cards and a 4in1 for smaller cards. Both act in the same way and once one has been ejected the other wont mount as well. Both cards worked fine in system 10.3.9. System log does not show any difference in loading when it mounts and when it doesn't.

Well, I tried the hardware test and now we know it is a software problem(hardware checks out fine).
I checked out the Delkin website. That was disappointing. Looks like I need to buy more hardware to solve this one. Worse yet if I spend the $100 for two cards they wont work in my next laptop as I plan to get a MacBook as soon as PhotoShop is Intel ready.
So now the question is what do I do with this growing mountain of unusable peripherals. My business is small but we've bought a lot of macs. Close to 50 now. We had a few before Y2K and just before we replace all the PCs with iMacs and G4's. System 8.6 was great and every printer and reader and camera and scanner and external storage device (some going back to 1989) worked great. Now that we have "upgraded" the software so we can do really complicated things like properly viewing web pages and send authorized email nothing works right. I have faxes (Apple 56k in a G4) that can't detect detect dial tone when faxing but can connect to the internet as a modem. Printers that print fine in TextEdit (PS fonts and all) but can't print out of Excel. Dont even get me started about fonts. The list keeps growing and the only answer I hear is to replace perfectly good hardware with new stuff. Then when I do I find the software wont work. (I had to use a old laptop with 10.3 to run the latest software from Version to set up a friends home DSL.) I need to get out of this loop it is costing more than it's worth.

  • Render button ok but fields displayed as read-only(solved)

    Dear JHeadstart,
I'm trying to solve the next situation.
I'm Using a form with 'Same Page?' checked.
I'm rendering an add-button: when a row is not found I display the add button and when a row is found, the add button is not displayed.
This works well with the EL expression: #{bindings.<viewobject>InputDate.inputValue eq null} in the 'Insert allowed EL expression'. For if now row is found this field is null.
But when I press the add button I only get readonly fields where I'm hoping for inputfields to fill so I can insert a new row in the table.
In the jspx file I find, the EL expression I used, back for every field in the form.
The form is based on a VO based on 2 entity objects. One is always updateble (here I want to have the inputfields) and one is read-only.
I've also tried the EL: #{!((bindings.<viewobject>Iterator.currentRowIndexInRange!=-1 and bindings.<viewobject>Iterator.findMode!='true'))} which is used to render the value="#{nls['NO_ROWS_FOUND']}" in de jspx file.
    but with the same results.
So what can I do to make those fields insertable?
    Help will be appreciated!
    regards,
    Marcel.
After some more googling I found:
    http://download-east.oracle.com/docs/html/B25947_01/bcvoeo009.htm#BABJEEFA
Section 7.9.3 got me on track.
In my create() the InputDate field was filled (sic).
When I used another field in the EL, it worked.

    Kiran,
There is a set of steps that you need to follow to enable any change to timecard layouts. Please follow the Tc whitepaper to make changes and upload using FNDLOAD command. You will also have to upload them with new layout names and update the same in preferences node.

Both the internal Sd reader on my iMAC and a usb external reader read all cards as read/only.  If you go to get info, you can't change this setting.  In Disk Utility you can't do anything, everything is greyed out. When you insert a card into either reader and then remove it with ejecting, I don't get the error message telling me to eject before removing.

There was a thread from 2009 about this problem: it seems that some sd cards (and/or perhaps some sd card slots) get confused, and indicate read only with the switch at either end, but will indicate read/write status with the switch midway between the ends (perhaps a little bit more toward the unlocked end). This sounds strange, I know, but it worked for me today, with a brand new 64GB card (the first one I've ever used in my 21 month old MBP, which indicated read-only with the switch at either end, but became read-write with the switch in the middle.

  • Sd card read only

    Hi Everybody!
    I have a Lexar Multi-Use 8gb memory card.
When I plug it in through the air's memory card slot, it says it is read only. I have double checked to see if the card switch was on lock, and it is not. Now the confusing part is that I can not reformat the card, or repair permissions through terminal or through disk utility.
But then when I plug the memory card into the camera, and connect the camera to the computer via usb, the only program that can delete the photos is image capture.
Has anybody else had a similar problem, or know how to fix this issue?

    izzmann56 wrote:
Disk utility won't let me reformat it though.. It will ONLY let me verify permissions. Nothing else.
Can you do a low level format on your camera?  If not then you may have a card that is failing.  Many years ago I had a SanDisk 1GB micro that failed and the first sign of failure was the inability to format the card but I could still write to it.

  • Flash card read only

I have not been able to write to 2GB SD flash cards. They attach as read only devices. I have tried two different manufacturers, Kingston and Crucial. Both of the cards are FAT 16 formatted. I can read and write to some 512MB SD flash cards that I have. Is there a size limitation? I did not see anyone else with this issue when I searched the discussion groups. Any help is appreciated.

A bit late for the original poster, but ... for anyone else searching for help now, like I just have:
I've just had the same problem, thought it was because I recently installed Leopard. Checked the Lock switch on my SD card, and it was set to allow writing.
In the end, I tried flicking the switch on the card to Lock, then back, and that resolved the issue. The internal mechanism must have been in a different position to the visible switch.

  • Macbook Pro - SD Card Reader Issues Solved!

I recently purchased a gently used, early 2011 MBP. I've had it for a few months, but I did not try using the SD card reader until last week... so much for kicking the tires. Long story short, the darn thing did not recognize or mount one single SD card out of a handful of cards, and at least 3 different card manufacturers all used with my Canon DSLR. I searched the net trying to find a solution and tried everything from sticking the card in at a some strange and ridiculous slant to shutting the computer down three different ways and resetting the System Management Controller (SMC); nothing worked. So today I spent 25 minutes or so chatting with an apple care specialist and they (Jim the apple care guru) finally came up with a solution, even though I'm sure neither one of us knows exactly why it worked. So here goes...
Put your SD card in a external card reader, once it's mounted go to disk utilities and reformat (erase) the drive to Mac OS Extended. Take it out of your external reader and put it in the built-in reader on your Mac. Now, of course, it will no longer work in your camera or most other devices so you'll have to format it again in your device of choice. However, here's the kicker... once I did l all of that and took some quick pics, I put it back in my MBP and it popped right up even after a reboot. But wait there's more.... I then put the SD card in my wife's work laptop (PC running Win8) and played with the files for a bit, then stuck it back in the Mac and it still recognized it. So there goes the "windows screws up the formatting myth).
So naturally I assumed that I would be forced to go through this double formatting process for all of my SD cards (and I have a lot), but then it happened! A Christmas miracle in October. I tried a second card, and then a third and a fourth and a fifth, etc... AND now they ALL pop up just like they should. Without reformatting or any other humanly changed processes. Yep... There you have it, it makes no sense. But it works ;)
Somehow formatting just one card in the card reader "woke up" the whole process, almost like my MBP was like, hmmm I was wondering what you kept sticking inside that's slot of mine...
Hope this helps someone. Sorry for the rant :)

Anyone else with card reader issues should read this page. Just because your card reader doesn't appear to be working or has mysteriously dropped off your system doesn't necessarily mean a logic board replacement. I've repaired several portables over the years that had been quoted for costly logic board replacements, when in fact the failures were relatively easy to resolve once you understood the real problem.
It's common belief a PRAM or SMC reset should fix all hardware glitches but sometimes it just doesn't go deep enough, as I found out with my 2011 MBP. Simply removing the battery was all it took to resurrect my seemingly dead card reader, when PRAM and SMC resets failed to have any impact on the problem.

  • New computer vs card reader/USB ***Solved***

I'm not too sure what forum I need to address this to. Not sure if it's an issue of bios, OS or hardware. It's very weird, wherever it belongs.
I just built a new computer (see specs below) and I have a HP Officejet 6300 with a front USB port combined with four different card reader ports. I don't use these ports and don't need them. When I installed this thing to my last computer a few months ago (an Aopen AX3S with PIII 933 MHx Coppermine) it wasn't a problem and didn't interfere with booting. After a few days, I uninstalled this pseudo drivecard reader because it interfered with my preferred drive assignment letters. I uninstalled it and it was gone. End of story.
Now I have the new computer that also has an AMI bios. I built it last Friday and reinstalled and updated all my software over the weekend, including the HP printer/scanner/fax software and drivers. I never connected the Officejet until I needed to print something yesterday. No problems there.
Since connecting this USB fed HP device, whenever I reboot this machine, it can take forever to get past the POST. First, it initializes the USB controllers, then displays the memory and locates my USB hub and a mass storage device. After that it proceeds though autodetecting my all my hard disks and optical drives. Then it starts autodetecting USB mass storage devices and begins hunting a "Device #0 :" It doesn't find it and tells me "0 mass storage devices found and configured" and something about NVRAM.
The time required for this is variable and may take either a fraction of a second or 28 seconds or 8½ minutes to reach this point in the POST. I never know what it will do until it happens. 8½ minutes is a long time to wait for signs of life.
In devicemgmt.msc this thing shows up both as as "Storage volume/Generic volume" and in my Disk drives category as "HP Officejet 6310 USB Device". In "My Computer" it shows up as Removable Disk H:, as "HP Officejet 6310 USB device".
I've tried numerous times to uninstall this device but it comes right back like a bad weed. Sometimes it tells me "Windows has found new hardware", sometimes not. Regardless, it always comes back and I can't get rid of it, unlike with the old computer. Once I unintalled the thing in that computer, it was simply gone.
I can disable the device either in "Device Manager" or "My Computer" but then it always takes 8½ minutes to POST the first boot and 28 seconds thereafter.
When I disable the thing, it turns into a disabled "HP Officejet 6310 USB Device" in devmgmt.msc under Disk drives and disappears as a "Storage volume/Generic volume" and disappears in "My Computer".
If I unplug the USB cable from the Officejet or switch it off, everything is good.
I can't find anything in the BIOS that would explain this behavior but have tried resetting it anyway. I've pulled the plug and battery, discharged the capacitors by cycling the power button and cleared the CMOS numerous times. This hasn't helped.
Anybody know how to deal with this? It's really a pain in the butt.
Otherwise the new computer is great. Scary fast and stable as a rock.
(I don't really need to know HP makes junk. I'm aware of that. I bought one quite a few years ago with a replacement policy. It broke so they gave me another one. They keep breaking and I keep free replacements.)

I think I fixed it last night. Not sure exactly how it happened but I did another cmos clear with a CF card in the HP, left it unplugged for quite some time and disabled quick booting. After that, POST quit looking for the HP. Now it is doing as it should and not finding or even looking for a printer as a potential boot drive when starting up. It does appear in Windows exactly as it's supposed to and occupying one of my drive but I'm going to leave it alone now.
Changing legacy support had no effect on anything. I tried that last night. It returned to its default of Auto with reset of the cmos. That's where it is now.

    Hi Svet,
I ran the HP USB disk tool on my Corsair flash drive and installed the MSIHQ BIOS tool on it with the v. 1.5 update. It worked like a champ. I had to jump through some hoops again to make the bios quit looking for the HP card reader at the POST but got it done. Everything is currently working just as it should.
With the new bios, I have the option  to change the multiplier. I'll probably wait a while before I start goofing with that but I just wanted to let you know that everything appears to be good with my new computer.

  • SD Card Reader only works on restart

I have a 21.5in Mid 2010 iMac running OSX 10.8.4 (Mountain Lion). If I start it with an SC card in the slot, the card is mounted (and the drive and card show up in Disk Utility). If I eject it then re-insert it, it won't mount (and doesn't show in Disk Utility). On restart, it shows up again.
I have read and tried various suggestions on the Apple Forums, and none of them have worked.

I examined the system log as I unmounted the SD card (visible since a reboot) and found the information about the unmounting of the card. When I re-inserted the card, nothing happened. No further log entries. Here is the log (with an interesting error about the LSOF being 'left open':

  • Used my card reader to import images, now see "incompatible JPEG" on images in camera

I have a Canon Power Shot A720 and used the card reader to import photos into the organizer.  Now when I go back to erase some images from the camera I see many, but not all, of my 'once' images blacked out with a grey/white box in the center & a yellow question mark. Under the box it says "incompatible JPEG".  What does that mean?  It's never happened to me before, but I usually import my images directly from the camera.

    Hi,
I'm not sure I understand your question since it's been a while since I had
trouble.  When I had the trouble I was downloading from my camera and
storing them in the Organizer.  My problem came when I edited those images
and RENAMED them.  I guess the organizer didn't recognize the renamed
photos?  Those were the images which had the yellow check mark.  I now use a
card reader only, and I store them in 'Pictures' instead of the PSE
organizer.  I haven't had any more problems.   I think the Organizer, when
used properly, would be the best choice.....I just couldn't figure it out!
Frankly, I just didn't understand the Organizer and was used to my own
method for storage.  I think that's what messed me up.  I had help from a
computer technician to retrieve those images, and I haven't had any problems
    since.
As for deleting images, I only delete images from my camera by using the
delete on my camera.  I never, never delete from my card/camera by using the
prompt from my computer, like "do you want to delete these images from your
    camera?"
    Good luck!
    Donna
I don't if I helped you at all.  You're welcome to write back or hope for a
really good explanation on the forum boards.

  • SDCARD reader Read-Only

I have a 2012 Macbook Pro 13inch 2.5 GHz, 4GB Ram, 500GB HDD. Upgraded to Yosemite 10.10 and was looking to put Magic Lantern on a Canon camera, so I put the SDHC card in the card reader only to find that it sees the card as read-only. The lock button is in the off position (meaning it should be able to read and write to the card).
Have reset both the SMC and PRAM to no avail.
Just curious if I missed something with the 10.10 update. I have tried two different cards: One is an SDHC and the other not. Any help or guidance would be appreciated.

Never reformat a camera's memory card using your Mac — always reformat the card or delete pictures from it using your camera's menu commands, not the Mac. A card that's been formatted on a Mac or had pictures added to or deleted from it by a Mac is likely to be found unusable by many cameras. Reformatting in the camera usually resolves that problem.
As for your card being seen as read-only by the Mac, that's not a drawback if you adhere to the practices I've recommended above. But if you want to use an SD card for something other than uploading photos from your camera to your Mac, then it's a pain, and the problem ha been reported here a number of times before. For some people, inserting the card very fast into the SD slot has remedied the problem. Others have found that they need to push the card slightly upward, downward or to one side or the other while inserting it, rather than just pushing it straight in. Still others have found that certain cards' locking sliders bind against the side of the slot and get pushed into the locked (read-only) position as the card is inserted. You can experiment with all these ideas and see what happens, but in some cases just switching to a different brand of card has been the answer. And while it's irksome to contemplate resorting to a USB card reader when you have what ought to be a perfectly good SD reader built into your computer, for some people that has been preferable to relying on an unreliable SD slot.

  • SD card not mounting in card slot, mounts only with USB card reader

    hi all,
I have browsed this forum "Ports and interfaces on the MacBook Pro (2008 and Later)" for a bit and searched for "SD" but did not find any posts directly related to my issue here.
I have a Kingston 512Mb card which mounts in my MacBook Pro only when I insert it in a cardreader inserted in the USB port.
Directly in the memory card slot it does not mount. Other SD cards do mount. I did not yet recognise a pattern in what mounts and does not mount.
I need to mount this specific SD card in the memory slot because bigger, newer SD cards are not accepted by the device I am using the card in (an iRex iLiad).
The Kingston 512Mb SD card is formatted as MS-DOS (FAT16) according to Disk Utility.
Any suggestions on what I could try? Buying other 512Mb cards is not that easy, there is not a lot available and only the ones on this list http://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/IliadSD_Memorycardslist are supported by the device.
    TIA!

Within a year or two, a device that is limited to 512MB and smaller cards — and only certain ones of those — will probably be completely useless. As you've found, no one else is interested in buying such tiny cards any more, and their production is likely to be discontinued very soon.
This does nothing to explain why your card can't be read in the built-in reader, though. One thing to check is the position of the "lock" slider on the card; a small handful of other posters with similar problems have reported that if the slider isn't securely locked or unlocked (I don't recall which), it gets disturbed as the card is inserted, and the card can't be read as a result.
If that doesn't solve the problem for you, just use your USB reader when you have to read that particular card. As you say, your other (presumably larger) cards are all read properly in the built-in reader, so you know the reader works. There may just be a minute manufacturing-tolerance problem with that particular card.
