Security Wipe - day 3

So, I've forgotten my device password and was informed the only way to access my phone again would be to perform a security wipe (much to my despair!) Luckily I was able to download all of my pictures and documents to my computer but was led to believe all my contacts and everything would be wiped. Disappointing, but that's what I get for forgetting my password! So, I removed my SD card and began the wipe. Took 9+ hours for the wipe to get to 97% and then I went to bed, the power went out and my battery died. Started the wipe again yesterday morning at 8. By 11:30 PM the wipe was still going. There was a green circle with what looks like a little SIM card in the middle of it. Was still flashing leading me to believe it was still going, but seemed to be never ending. I took the battery out out of frustration by that point and let it start again. Woke up this morning and it is still at 96%. What do I do?? Like I said, I can't remember my password so anything related to BlackBerry Link is out. I am so frustrated that this is day 3 of me not being able to access my phone! Do I just wait it out for the remaining 4% that seems like it will never come? Any advice would be appreciated!

Hi and Welcome to the Community! Yup..it can be frustrating, but stopping it each time actually lengthens the entire processing time, it does not shorten it. Your option to waiting it out is to use an AutoLoader to reload your OS...this might actually be a recommended procedure for you...who knows how much corruption has been introduced into the OS by all that has gone on. A clean OS reload would be a good idea.http://supportforums.blackberry.com/t5/BlackBerry-10-OS-Device-Software/Upgrading-OS10-devices-using...http://forums.crackberry.com/bb10-leaked-beta-os-f395/bb10-os-archive-943672/ Good luck and let us know!

  • How to do a security wipe if phone is stuck on start-up screen and your micro-usb port is also broken?

    Good day
A week or so ago, my  phone just out of the blue decided that it would not initiate fully anymore.  It was laying on charge and when i took it off after an hour or so, it just stuck on the service provider's screen before saying "loading personal settings".  I was informed that my os needed to be reinstalled, the problem is, my usb port ion my phone is also broken.  I took the phone in to a repair guy, but he wants to ask me an idiotic price to fix it and says he is able to do so without using my usb port?  Is there any way you can wipe your Blackberry 8520 and reinstall an O.S if your usb port on the phone is broken?  Please, this is a matter of life and death as there are a hell of a load of contacts, documents and emails i would like to save, but if not able to, I can handle that too, just need the phone to work, it's of the highest importance!
Thank you so much in advance.
    Juan

I take it that you do not have a recent back up of your phone's data?
Try starting your 8520 in Safe Mode.
Article ID: KB17877 How to start a BlackBerry smartphone in Safe Mode http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/KB17877
If you can do that, you can get to the Security wipe function, but without a good USB port, I am not sure how you're going to load the OS. But try Safe Mode first.

  • How do i securely wipe the disk on an iMac?

I replaced an old iMac and want to donate it to charity. But I need to securely wipe the disk first. Can someone please provide instructions. Thanks?

If your machine came with DVDs then you can do a reformat using Disk Utility on the install DVD that came with the machine, click Erase - Security and choose the number of passes, the more secure you go the longer it takes. If you have a large (1TB or more) and set it to the highest security the erase process could take days and no I am not kidding. In most case set it to a very moderate setting is just fine.
If your machine came with Lion or later where no DVDs were shipped, boot into the Recovery Partition and launch DU from there.

  • BB10 security wipe on a Q10 is taking a VERY long time.

I am running a security wipe on a Q10.. It's been going for over an hour. I've read it can take around 15 minutes but this is ridiculous.. I don't think it's working. The phone was only a few days old and has had very little use. I was about to pull the battery when I read that that will cause the software to be reloaded.  The screen just has a swirly timer going around and what looks more like a printer icon. Any ideas what to do? I don't have much confidence it's going to finish, it feels like a bug.

Hey, This is why I started another topic. My situation is slightly different and I'm looking for an answer to a different question: Hello, I’ve searched high and low for the answer to this problem. I can find others with a similar problem, but no solution. Maybe someone here can help? I preformed a security wipe last night at approximately 10pm. I did this because I realised I’d used 7.8GB of my 8GB limit and it was affecting the phone’s performance – specifically, I couldn’t get the hub to load. I use my phone for social media, emails and messaging only, and with my contacts saved elsewhere I’m not concerned about having to set the phone up again. Because of that, I selected to wipe everything besides the security option, which was greyed out and couldn’t be selected. The wipe was successfully processed, my phone automatically shut down and restarted, and the sim/USB looking load image appeared with a small, revolving circle beneath it. Having performed a security wipe before I know it can take a few hours, so I went to bed. It’s now 1:30pm the next day and the security wipe still hasn’t completed. I’ve read various accounts of the wipe taking between 2-4 hours, but nothing about it taking this long. I’m concerned that, although the circle is still revolving, the wipe has crashed somehow and I have no way of booting or cancelling the wipe. I’ve restarted the phone once to no effect – the same load screen appears following the Blackberry icon. I do wonder whether this effectively restarted the wipe causing a further delay, as I did it at approximately 7am and my phone is hot to touch, suggesting it's doing something at least. A lot of people suggest taking the battery out to force a reboot, but unfortunately as this is a Q10 (and unless I’m missing something) that’s not an option: the battery’s not accessible. Does anyone know what I can do? Is there a fancy way of restoring to factory settings? I was wondering whether there’s a pin-hole-esque reset anywhere? I honestly don’t mind starting from scratch; I just want my phone back! I’m going to wait for tomorrow until I do anything in case the wipe is just taking a really (really) long time. I’d just like to know in advance if there’s another solution. I would prefer to find the solution myself rather than going to my provider, who will probably leave me totally phoneless for weeks! So: how do I reboot/cancel the wipe if I need to considering I can't remove the battery? Any help appreciated!

  • How Do You Securely Wipe All Info Off Internal Hard Drive?

A friend has to ship her new iMac back to Apple for a replacement -- long story.
But before she ships it off she wants to wipe the internal hard drive of all her personal info -- mail, photos, music, documents, ...
What's the best way to securely wipe that internal drive?

you can do it using the erase tab in disk utility. there is an option to erase securely. it writes zeros over everything on the drive. do just one zero erase pass. disk utility lets you choose multiple erase passes but that's a vast overkill.
to do it to an internal drive boot from the snow leopard dvd and use disk utility there to erase the drive. when done restart and hold option at the chime. this will boot you into startup disk manager. eject the isntall dvd there and shut down.

  • Power Macintosh 7200 to Mac Mini back up and secure wipe question

Hi all, nearly figured this on my own but hope that someone here can fill in the gaps.
I have a clunky old 7200/75/16 (no upgrade card, bog standard machine) I want to sell/give/dump.
Before that, I need to back up the 500 MB HDD (hard to believe that was big once, now looking at a 500 GB HDD for the new machine!) and then secure wipe it.
I've learned that I can get halfway there with a crossover cable and Apple Talk. So far, so good.
Now, how about the secure wipe? I've had a look but I've not had any success in finding a how-to.
I have a feeling I can't use Disk Utility in Leopard for this, but maybe I am wrong.
Advice is sought from anyone here that can share their expertise on the best way to go.
A cheap/free solution (that doesn't destroy the machine) would be welcomed!
If relevant: I don't have the installer floppies for the 7200. I unwisely bought the machine without them but vaguely recall from an earlier Macintosh that Disk First Aid had some kind of format facility though I doubt it was far from secure by today's standards. I figure I can find a set of installer disks on eBay to get the 7200 operational again once I've completed this chore...

I've learned that I can get halfway there with a crossover cable and Apple Talk.
File sharing via AppleTalk cannot be used with the most modern operating systems. You should be able to use TCP/IP. A third-party program may be of interest. Also, see this article for some general information.
Now, how about the secure wipe?
One could use Drive Setup (a 1.7.3 version is available for download) for this. Under the Functions menu you will find Initialization Options, where "Zero all data" can be chosen. However, the program has to run from another disk (such as a bootable floppy). It is possible to create and modify a startup floppy on the 7200.
A third-party application such as Wipe Info (part of Norton Utilities, commercial) or Burn 2.5 (freeware) could be used, too.
If relevant: I don't have the installer floppies for the 7200.
The Disk Tools PPC (here) is one thinkable startup floppy for the Power Macintosh computer in question. If necessary, a complete System 7.5.3 (e.g., the International English version here) can be downloaded from Apple.

  • Desktop Manager Not Working After Security Wipe

I had to do a security wipe on my Tour to fix a problem I was having with the Bluetooth on my phone (which surpisingly worked!).  However, now when I try to sync my phone with my computer, Desktop Manager has a problem.  When the program gets to synching my calendar, Desktop Manager stops working.  The screen goes white, and I get a message saying that it has stopped working.  I tried clicking the Debug button, but it didn't do or tell me anything.  It seems to fail when it gets to item 26 of 191 in my calendar (from the status bar that appears when synching), but I have no idea what that item is.  Any ideas as to why this is now happening or how I get figure out what calendar item might be causing the problem?  Thanks.

    Interesting!

  • Securely Wipe iPod Touch

    Hey guys,
I just got an iPhone 4, and am going to sell my 32GB 3rd gen iPod Touch on ebay. The problem with this is that I don't know who will buy it, and I'va had somewhat sensitive data on it (Like contacts, e-mail, etc.), so I was wondering if anyone knew how to securely wipe my iPod? If it were a mac, I would open disk utility, and do a 35-pass format, is there some sort of equivalent that anyone knows of, because if you just format a drive, all the data is still there.
    Thanks in advance,
    Mncheeseboy

Erase all content and settings: Connect iPod touch to your computer or a power adapter. Choose Settings > General > Reset and tap “Erase All Content and Settings.”
This resets all settings to their defaults and erases all your information and media:
On iPod touch 3rd generation: by removing the encryption key to the data (which is encrypted using 256-bit AES encryption)

  • 4 hours and Security Wipe still continuing in Q5

I set my phone on security wipe and its been 4 hours and its still not finished. I removed the media card...
Need urgent help. Hard reboot is alos not working
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hello noorenayat
Relax, let the wipe process finish and connect it to the wall charger. There's wipe with more than 12 hours. It depends on data size.
Also your phone number listed in your profile. It's not recommended as this is open forums and spammer may send junk messages to your phone. Edit it from My Setting at top left of this page and change to your carrier name.
    Good luck.

  • Can I securely wipe the flash memory in the iPhone?

    Hello:
Is there any way to SECURELY wipe the free space on the iPhone (ala DOD Wipe or Gutmann). Perhaps through an app or something. I have a program on my laptop that would do it but Windows 7 will not recognize the phone as a drive, only as an attached device.
    Thanks,
    Ed

The iphone does NOT support disk mode and does NOT behave as a flash drive when connected to your computer.
You would have to use the erase all content and settings feature on the iphone. This is covered in the manual -page 201:
"Erase all content and settings: Connect iPhone to your computer or a power adapter. Choose General > Reset and tap “Erase All Content and Settings.”
This resets all settings, and erases all your information and media by removing the encryption key to the data (which is encrypted using 256-bit AES encryption)."

  • Save BB settings before performing security wipe

Hello, We are moving from a internal mail environment to Microsoft Online Services hosted email. I understand as part of the process that all BlackBerry users will need to perform a security wipe prior to reactiving their devices. What is the best way for users to save/keep their settings before they perform the security wipe? Is it only possible to do this via Desktop Manager? I ask because not all our users have/utilize the Desktop Manger. Thanks for any help on this topic!!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Right. Using the Backup and Restore feature in the Desktop Manager is the only option for you I believe. Couldn't you place the Desktop Manager on a shared drive that everyone has access to for them to install it?
If you were using a BES I would suggest using the BlackBerry Web Desktop Manager because you can configure it to allow anyone to access it from your intranet

  • Still freezing up after security wipe ?

    Greetings all,
Despite performing a security wipe I am still experiencing constant freezing of my phone, especially with the calendar.  I suspect it may be an application that is causing the issue.  During backup and restore I didn't delete any applications.
Any suggestions ?  Thanks in advance.

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
If indeed you suspect an app, then you can try removing them one by one until the behavior clears. But, be aware that if the app caused OS level corruption, then removing the app won't cure that corruption...only a clean OS reload would do so...and that's the process I recommend you follow.
At the top of each device forum, there should be some "sticky" threads that discuss the OS levels available for many models. If they include your model, then please use those as reference as you proceed. Otherwise, you will have to dig through the official download portal for OS packages for your model:
    http://us.blackberry.com/support/downloads/download_sites.jsp
From a PC, you can install any compatible (e.g., for your exact BB Model Number) OS package to a BB via this procedure:
    http://supportforums.blackberry.com/t5/BlackBerry-Device-Software/How-To-Reload-Your-Operating-Syste...
Note that while written for "reload" and the Storm, it can be used to upgrade, downgrade, or reload any BB device model -- it all depends on the OS package you download and install to your PC. If that OS package is from a carrier other than the carrier for which your BB was originally manufactured, then delete, on your PC, all copies of VENDOR.XML...there will be at least one, and perhaps 2, and they will be located in or similarly to (it changes based on your Windows version) these folders:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader
    C:\Users\(your Windows UserName)\AppData\Roaming\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\Loader XML
Be sure that you remove, from your PC, any other BB device OS packages as having more than one installed to the PC can cause conflicts with this procedure.
You may also want to investigate the use of BBSAK (bbsak.org) to perform the wipe it is capable of.
You may also want to try this procedure to perhaps narrow down the precise causal item:
Load your OS "bare bones"...if anything is optional, do not install it.
If the behavior presents immediately, then try a different OS with step 1
If the behavior does not immediately present, then run for as long as it takes for you to be sure that the behavior will not present.
Add one thing -- no matter how tempting, just one.
If the behavior does not present immediately, then again run for long enough to be sure it will not have the same problem
Repeat steps 4 and 5 until all things are loaded or the behavior presents
When the behavior presents, you know the culprit...the last thing you loaded.
If the behavior does not re-present, then you know that either step 1 or 2 cured it.
If the behavior presents no matter what, then you likely have a hardware level issue for which no amount of OS or software can cure.
If you are on MAC, you are limited to only your carriers sanctioned OS packages...but can still use any levels that they currently sanction. See this procedure:

  • Security wipe , no icons , can't update or connect to desktop manager

got a used playbook , did a security wipe , no icons , update fails at 99% of part 2 , can't connect to pc and desktop manager !
    i donnow what to do

The exact same issue just happened to me today. Spent 3 hours on the phone with Blackberry Tech Support, Apparently there is a known issue with the Blackberry Link, and Desktop Software where the update process when reloading your Software for the playbook. The agent suggested a workaround to me that didn't work, but it's worth a try. First you'll need to have the device on, and not plugged into any computers. Try removing all icons from the screen, for me this was removing the internet browser, and setup icons. ONce they're gone shut down the device and leave it off for up to 5 minutes, then try turning the device on again. If it works the icons will be back with all your usual default icons for the blackberry OS.
Since the issue is known by Blackberry I was informed that a fix for Blackberry Link is being released to resolve this issue. Once the update for the link software is out you can try reloading the software again.
