Seeking a tutorial on grading technique

Hello Everyone,
I have been a 3D Motion Graphics Designer and Video Editor for about 12 years now.  In that time, I have only been asked to color correct, and given the subject matter I was working with, FCP's Color Corrector 3-way was all I needed.
Well, times change... I am now doing a job where, in addition to doing the graphics work and design, I have been asked to grade a bunch of footage (4K RED) of the model (it's a cosmetics company) to make it closely resemble images of the same model as they appear in their print literature.  To me, this seems a near impossible task, but I am sure there is some way of getting at least close to what they want for an experienced colorist - which I am not.
I have familiarized myself with Speed Grade CC as it was something I had ready access to (being that I use other Adobe tools regularly), and it seems robust enough to handle what I need.
Well, as you know, understanding the tools is only half the battle - I now need to learn some technique, and very specific technique at that.  I have done some poking around the web but I have not found any tutorials relating to grading footage in this way - that is to give this model the appearance of a 'perfected' still image.
Any help or advice here will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
- WIll

While I can advise you to look at several commercial training sources (including my own SpeedGrade Fundamentals at FXPHD.com), why don't you just start at the source:
http://tv.adobe.com/product/speedgrade/ and http://helpx.adobe.com/speedgrade/topics/getting-started.html
enough tutorials there to keep you bussy for a few days. Also if you ar serious, I'd suggest this book:
http://www.amazon.com/Color-Correction-Handbook-Professional-Techniques/dp/0321713117 as it is not tied to a specific software, but focuses on the craft itself.
Happy grading!

For example, I type in appointments onto my iPhone4S, and I'm still trying to figure out how to sync it up with the iCal on our dekstop iMac.  I think that I would feel more organized if I could really understand how to use these apps and

  • Photo Highlight Recovery Tutorial

    Hello,
A week or so ago there was a thread of HDR and more specifically about using
one raw image as the source for an HDR image to recovery highlights, etc. I
promised that I would post a tutorial for my technique on using a single raw
file for highlight recovery. Well here it is:

Well, I just did some playing around and I have some major issues with the
Control+Clicking on the RGB channel. It doesn't just select the highlights,
it seems to select nearly all of the image. Take a look at these samples
here. One is from using the color range and one from control clicking on the
RGB channel. The RGB channel option is not acceptable for what my technique
is supposed to do. I have better results using the color range, saving it to
an alpha channel and then applying a small amount of blur to take care of
the hard edges. I am going to play some more and work on refining the
technique but I don't see myself recommending the control clicking method
because it selects way more than just the highlights.

  • Can't find a specific photoshop tutorial

It was on Adobe.tv several months ago..
It was about masking and using a gradient to feather a mask to blend layers together.
The sample photos were a closeup of a man on the right side of the screen and the other photo was a open field.
The tutorial was to insert the photo of the man into the other using a mask and a gradient w/brush to blend the two together smoothly.
Anyone seens this or know of a similar tutorial using this technique?

Not quite the tutorial you were thinking of, I suspect, but this one covers information along the lines of what you've stated:

  • "Advance Synchronization Techniques for Data Acqusition is not simple.

I want to use a 6534 DIO to drive my instrument and a synchronized 6502E to do AI from the instrument. The developer zone tutorial "Advanced Synchronization Techniques for Data Acquisition" suggests some of what is necessary to change from using AO as the master to using some other operation. After installing an RTSI cable, "Synchronized AI,AO,DI,DO,CTR.vi" runs as-is. Has anyone successfully converted the "Synchronized AI,AO,DI,DO,CTR.vi" or something similar to having some other master than AO? I want to use DO as master, and have moved the start vi's to the initialization cases except that for DO, have removed DI completely, and have tried to get DO to transmit REC1 on RTSI1 and AI and AO to clock o
n the RTSI1 signal. The modified VI runs to completion, but I get no input at AI.

    Hi Bhanu,
I ran the program SAP_FACTVIEWS_RECREATE.It is also not fetching any data.In the monitor, the extraction shows yellow status and the Processing says NO DATA.I have not given any selections at infopackage level.
Please let me know what do i do.

  • White (halo) around gif image on the web

How do I get rid of the thin white border around my transparent gifs?

A tutorial describing the technique can be fond here:
    http://www.photoshopcafe.com/tutorials/transparent/transparent.htm
(Description of problem posted by Mathias Vejerslev)
A GIF only supports 1-bit transparency - either full transparency or full opaque. - Nothing inbetween. So, if your graphics has anti-aliased (fuzzy) edges, Photoshop has to make those semi-transparent pixels either fully transparent or fully opaque (by removing them, or adding an opaque color 'under' the fuzzy edges. This is the Matte.
Creating aliased graphics (no fuzzy edges) eliminates this problem, but you´ll have a harsh-looking graphic.
Ways around this, besides the matte color and aliased graphics, includes copying your HTML background graphic into your transparent file, and make a custom, aliased Matte (edge around your graphic), then place the transparent file pixel-precise on your webpage.

  • Should I color correct in Premiere Pro or something else?

Hey guys, I'm an experienced noob in digital video production. I learned on using an HD camera and Final Cut Pro 7 in my communications class. But now that I graduated, I bought myself a t3i and the adobe creative cloud. My question is, should I color correct in Premiere Pro or another suitable program (the only one I sort of know is Davinci Resolve lite)? Sure, I know it can be done in Premiere Pro, but I was wondering if there is a better alternative that I should focus my learning in for color correction. Thanks in advance!

It will do you till you get there.
A comprehensive study of CC / Grading techniques and theory ...will do more good than just learning how to work a CC Grading software application.

  • Is it possible to produce HDR from one image in LR?

I have been shooting a lot of images from inside a vehicle and using flash to fill in inside and ballance with the light outside.  The images are pretty well ballanced but have some dynamic range issues.  I am able to get a better output by tweaking the image towards higher exposure and a lower exposure and a middle exposure and blending these HDR style to get a better image.
I am trying to find a way to automate these multiple exposures or maybe create a presets to do this to speed up the process.  Any suggestions on how to make this easier?

Thanks for all the repsonses so far.
After reading your suggestions and playing around with some of your ideas, I have come up with a slight change in goals:  I am really not looking for an HDR per se I just want to recover a little more of the details lost with my current photographic technique, that i can not pick up with Fill Light and Recovery.  I find situations where Fill light adds then Recovery subtracts often offsetting the work of each other.  I have both darks and lights in these images that need coaxing out.
The photographs I am taking are from a cockpit of an airplane that I am also flying.  Since I am a little preoccupied during the flight with other tasks, I need to set up the camera and flash before the flight.  If I am lucky I am able to reach up and change the shutter speed to compensate for a change in outside light conditions.  I am getting some great images as the terrain and conditions are pretty and unique.  But the exposures and ballance are seldom perfect.
When I first did this, I painstakingly increased density in one area then painted a feathered mask by hand to get a better density of the outside the portion of the shot.  This was painstaking for 30+ images but worth it.  Someone told me about the luminance mask thing and that was much easier and made an great improvement in the shots.  I am having trouble finding the tutorial on this technique, I used before but will continue searching for it.  Any suggestions?
I have been playing with the Photomatix by exporting 3 images from the same raw image with 3 different exposures but am not liking the results,  I either get strange surreal images or crazy kinds of noise. I guess I need to get the tone mapping concept a little better.  I have played with some bracketed images I took in Napa last year (not from the cockpit) and am liking the result, I am excited to start working with HDR.  I just think Photomatix may be too agressive for this purpose.  I will play with Enfuse/LR pairing to see what it can do.
I am now setting the camera up on a Intervalometer and taking many shots over the course of a flight.  I would eventually like to do a time lapse or slide show with the images.  This could mean lots and lots of images to manipulate.  Depending on the outside scenery there may some images I want to hand improve with Photoshop, but not 400 images at a time.  I am hoping for a better workflow to process these using some sort of automation.  The one possible step that will make it easier is the camera is mounted in a fixed position and the only variable throughout each picture is the lighting outside.
I am marking this question as answered because you have all given me enough information to work with but doesn't mean I would not appreciate any suggestions on further improving a method or ways to automate this process.  Also attaching a photograph I took.  This one is a rare example of one that is very ballanced with just a little tweaking in Lightroom, this is a fairly rare occurance though.

Rinse repeat for all elements you need. Then place the fruit below and move your elements in position as needed. • How to eliminate background of an image while Maintaining semi-transparent mid-ground.

Sorry if the topic name is slightly inaccurate or if my question seems amaturish, I'm fairly new to using PS. For a project I would like to delete the black background of this image http://calibermag.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/2534069-Action-Bronson-617.jpg and replace it with another background, however I would like to keep the smoke that's lingering over the background. Are there any techniques or tools I could use to delete the background and the black behind the smoke without directly effecting the smoke?

That image will respond well to the [Refine Edge] feature.
Basically, select the dude with e.g., the Quick Select Tool, then use Refine Edge and paint the Refine Radius Tool over the smoke.
This tutorial gives the technique in some detail.  The technique shown works in the most current version of Photoshop.

  • I2C NXT block modifications / new block supporting RS485 interface port 4

    Hello
    1. Has anyone tried to modify the published I2C  read and write NXT blocks so that they can support the full 16 byte buffers available in the NXT firmware.  Many I2C interface applications require more than reading or writing one byte at a time.
Even the Ultrasonic sensor has some multi byte parameters that could be accessed.
It would appear that one only has to provide access to the buffer element contained within the lower level VI's in the current solution, but being a newbie   i have not been able to successfully make these buffers available on the main front panel.
    2. Has anyone created a NXT block that allows access to the RS485  port 4 hardware.  I see that no one had responded to an earlier post concerning this solution. I have seen  example  NXC code,  but i was looking for an NXT block implementation.
    3. Is there a tutorial that explains technique's for developing and debugging a NXT block for use on the NXT ?
I have read thru the pdf  tech docs and have followed the examples, but i still find it difficult to understand how one goes about createing, testing, debugging the application before creating a block for the NXT.
I am obviously missing some important points about Labview development for NXT.  I have a lot of experience developing embedded applications with C, but this is the first time i have tried to do anything with Labview especially with the Lego NXT as the Target device.
I want to create NXT blocks for some homebrew sensors that i have created. I need full access to the I2C and RS485 support in the NXT.
Can anyone suggest ways one should go about createing, debugging, this type of sensor interface block for the NXT.
    Thanks
    KC

Yes: there are so many questions in your post that it is difficult to build an answer...
I surely can not help you with the problem of multiple bytes.
This is an answer to your question about rs485 in NXT-G:
    http://forums.nxtasy.org/index.php?s=&showtopic=1676&view=findpost&p=13530
I don't know if you have already studied the i2c-related pages in:
    http://www.tau.ac.il/~stoledo/lego/
this too is an example which can be study both for i2c interfacing and NXT-G block preparation:
    http://www.extremenxt.com/tda8444.html
finally the block from mindsensors' PCF8574-NX kit could be useful (I mean: look at the vi's):
    http://www.mindsensors.com/index.php?module=documents&JAS_DocumentManager_op=viewDocument&JAS_Document_id=37
and maybe among the blocks they've prepared for their sensors:
    http://www.mindsensors.com/index.php?module=pagemaster&PAGE_user_op=view_page&PAGE_id=45&MMN_position=12:12
    you could learn something.
    I agree with you that the tutorial about building NXT-G blocks with Labview is too short;
some lessons can be learnt from the NXT-G blocks done by others (spying the vi's they wrote): you find many of them in nxtasy.org repository.
Some advanced techniques are reported in
    http://nxtasy.org/2007/04/12/advanced-nxt-g-block-techniques-part-iv/
    and other pages of nxtasy.org.

Can anyone here recommend a website with good ideas for how to shoot video? I now have a book to guide me for the making/editing of a movie: iLife '04: TEACH YOURSELF VISUALLY / Read Less - Learn More ....

A tutorial I like a lot is "Making Awesome iMovies",

    understand, entertaining, well planned, and
introduces both basic and not-so-basic steps of
    storyboarding, shooting and editing video.
Although the update for iMovie 5 is not yet

    me.

I will take a look at that page, but at this point, I want free how-to tips on shooting a video. I plunked down my money on the VISUAL book on iLife '04, and that's gonna have to be enough for now. Probably techniques for taking home movies are a lot less difficult to absorb that all of the procedures in iMovie 4 and all the other programs.
Thank you for the suggestion. I will check it out now.

  • Seeking: Drop Down Menu Tutorial for DreamWeaver CC (Pure CSS)

    Hey all.
I'm relatively new to Dreamweaver, and web design in general.  I took on a project to create a small-business website for my buddy.
I'll start by saying that I've googled, and have found several copy / paste solutions, as well as several plugin-style solutions.  For various reasons, I'm not interested in other methods of creating a menu (jQuery).  Project 7, before you post (like you seem to do in EVERY thread I've read about this topic...), I may purchase your tool later, but I want to learn the process first.
I'd like to know if anyone knows of a video or a walkthrough of how to create a CSS-only drop down menu for DreamWeaver CC.  An in-depth tutorial will help me better understand CSS and HTML in general, as well as help me navigate the changes in DreamWeaver (namely, the CSS designer).
