Sent 1.83 for logic board replacement?

I haven't seen anyone saying they sent in their 1.83 for a logic board replacement. I was wondering if they are putting the 2.0ghz version in the 1.83s when they are sent it or are they sending them back with 1.83s.

Nope... I just sent in my 1.83 for repair, and the MLB is an identical 1.83. In my experience, Apple keeps well enough stock of models going back beyond the AppleCare 3-year mark, so you'll get exactly the model you had before. (I've spoken with people who have iPods going back 3-4 generations who send in for repair or exchange, and still receive the same model.)

    Yes, I just received mine back today for logic board replacement. It did get rid of the whine, I must say that apple's service was first calss. I placed a call last Wednesday, received a shipping box next day, prepaid I might add. DHL picked up the box on Friday, apple service center received, repaired and shipped it back on Saturday. Amazing, never experienced this kind of turn-around on anything.

I don't remember) and it turned from grey (no apple symbol) to blue blank. Then third time, grey followed by blue with vertical lines, not blocky clear lines that you can see if you are close to it.

    I'll start with the issue. Sometimes randomly my laptop goes to sleep while im using it. It is impossible to wake up from this sleep and forces me to force power off the device. Apple did some tests and concluded I need to replace the logic board.
    I have a few questions.
    I understand they use refurbished logic boards, is it possibly I end up with a worse logic board.
    The hard drive does not need to be formated, will they format it? I have backups but I understand time machine can become troublesome after a logic board replacement. I have a very specific set up and I would need it just as it is.

    They very likely will, and they may return it with the version of OS X originally installed.
    We are users like you, so we are in no position to tell you about such hardware repairs.
    You should have a full backup available. Time Machine will not recognize the computer as your old one neither to restore or to backup. Time Machine will start a completely new backup. My advice is to make a bootable clone you can easily restore:
    Clone Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
    Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
         1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
             button.
         2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
         3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
         4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
             to the Destination entry field.
         5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
             the Source entry field.
         6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
    Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.

    You can't really request for them to replace the logic board, but if you have enough issues that makes it sound like the logic board needs to be replaced then I don't think you'll have any problems. For me, I complained that the computer was too hot to comfortably type on and that it had just crashed that same day I brought it in to the Genius bar. I implied that the crash was heat related (I thought it was) but when the Geniuses tested it at the store, the computer never felt uncomfortable. Nonetheless, they still obliged and sent the computer in. The repair center replaced the Logic Board with the new revision and, like others have said, it works well.
    Secondly, my 2 experiences with Apple repairs have been that they won't wipe your HD for a Logic Board replacement. Instead, they'll almost always perform an archive and install of OS X.

    I just got my MacBook Pro back from the repair center (sitting at the Genius Bar right now). The machine was sent in for heat/whine, keyboard & battery replacements, and a buzzing right speaker. The Genius I talked to initially recommended that they replace the main logic board, keyboard, battery, and right speaker assembly. The repair techs at the Houston repair center ended up replacing a lot of parts, but I suspect that they didn't actually replace the main logic board. Here is a list of the parts used to service my MacBook Pro:

    I'm still at the store so I haven't yet tested whether all these repairs actually fixed my problems; keyboard works great though! At this point I am just wondering whether the logic board was replaced or not. Does anybody have the part number/description for the main logic board on a 15-inch MacBook Pro with 256mb of VRAM?

    I've been home for about five minutes now, and in this quiet environment I've determined that neither my whine problem nor the right speaker distortion were fixed. I still get the whine, which goes away when I run PhotoBooth, put a moderate load on the system, or disable one of the cores. The right speaker still distorts, possibly worse than before.
    Not sure yet whether the machine is running any cooler, though I suspect the new battery may cool things off by a few degrees. On the plus side, after the temp sensor replacements I am at least able to monitor the internal temps (couldn't do this before because readings in Temperature Monitor never updated).
    So I guess I'll have to send my pride and joy back in for repairs again, hopefully for the main logic board replacement I was promised last time. Those b*stards!
    BTW has anyone succeeding in getting a fix for the right speaker distortion? This is certainly off topic and I'm guessing the answer is "No," but it never hurts to ask.

    I have heard that the logic board replacement program for MacBooks Pro with the failed NVidia 8600M GT chip has been extended from 3 to 4 years after the date of original purchase. However, a local AASP had no knowledge of such an extension. Is this true? I have a MacBook Pro 17" 2.6GHz that was purchased in 2008.

  • Macbook Pro Mid-2012 Logic Board replacement, Apple Dragging feet?

    First some background:
    I have a macbook pro 13" Mid-2012 non retina covered under applecare until Jan. 2016. Starting in late march, i had noticed some performance issues but never took it in as the issue would subside within a day or two. Going into the final two week of my college semester, the macbook started freezing and tacking almost 5 minutes to boot. Suddenly it would take 5 tries just to get it to boot. due to this, i had been unable to get the time machine backup to work as it would freeze for 12 hours on average.
    So thenI took my macbook pro into the local authorized apple service center (on April 29th) as i suddenly got 'open error 5: input output error' errors and my mbp wouldnt boot at all. When i spoke to the servicer, he and I agreed that at minimum the hard drive was failing. The servicer made a time machine backup of the data on the hdd and got the backup on my external drive. He asked to keep the external drive as it has a partition that is a USB install disk of the latest Mavericks. Soon after he got the data backed up, the hard drive showed signs of failure to happen soon. So we agreedto have him replace the hdd. He hoped to have my macbook to me by May 5th. Well on May 5th, i got a call from him that with the replacement hard drive, the computer still had similar issues and was able to track it down to logic board issues. We agreed that since he had the macbook pro already and since it was applecare covered, we should go ahead and replace the logic board. Anyways, he ordered a new logic board from apple last monday (May 5th, 2014). I called on Thursday for an update and the servicer was frustrated with Apple that something is going on and he hasnt received the part as Apple usually gets him these parts within 1-2 days of request.He said he will call me once Apple gets him the part as he will get on the repair once the part comes in.  He hasnt called me back yet.
    This is rather frustrating for me as my macbook had all my college files on it and this problem happened right before college finals (i technically lost about 2 months worth of web design files and class files) where much of what needed for finals was on that computer. if he could have gotten it back by the 7th as he'd hoped, i would have been fine.  Instead, i was forced to go back to my PC laptop and try recreating some of the files that were made by mac only applications into something similar on windows. i was unable to recover the web design files as they were on the macbook and i couldnt remember right off which folder it was in. So i had to scrape together things to be able to submit for my finals so i wouldnt totally bomb the course. My web design instructor understood how frustrated I got from losing all that work and having to settle for a final design that just met the requirments rather than the one on the mac that was well past it.
    He is not sure whats going on as the last time he ordered a logic board for the same model, he had it by the end of business the next day. He is apoligizing for everything . I am not frustrated with him, rather I am frustrated with Apple as they had recommended me to take it in ASAP, yet they are seemingly dragging thier feet on getting him the parts.
    On top of this, I am helping a neighbor modernize her business website, and am doing a project with the state unemployement office to help them redo thier videos. Both of these are things i would always use my mac for as it is like 5x faster than my pc on this stuff. It's more than just an inconvience now. I need my mac badly as the PC is just not fast enough to do what i need in the itme i am given (which i why i switched to mac as my primary computer).
    Is this common for Apple when it comes to logic board replacements for macbook pros or what?
    Has anyone else had this issue?

    Applecare was no help at all. I called and did the complaint. They confirmed that it is registered to me and everything but essetially told me that they cant give me answers as to what is taking so long. They knew a repair was in progress but wanted to set me up with an appointment at an apple store? (the nearest Apple retail store is Billings which is 240 miles away, or about 4 hours). i tell them its at the repair place and they go on to tell me they can send me a box to mail it in and have it reapir by them.. They are trying to shift the blame to the AASP and his rep. But he said he has been trying with very few answers from Apple as well

    After having the logic board replaced due to bad NVidia chip, my Time Machine will no longer backup my computer to the current backup. Is there a way to reset something to get Time Machine to continue to use the same backup files as before for this laptop?

    As far as TM is concerned you have a new computer, so it will make a new backup. If you don't have the space for both backups then erase your backup drive before backing up the computer.

  • How to send in for logic board / HD repair?

    Not long before my trial AppleCare expired, my MacBook Pro started doing very strange things, freezing, crashing, making grinding noises, etc. After reporting the results of Disk Utility and a hardware scan to AppleCare, they gave me a case number and said that I most likely needed both a logic board replacement and a hard drive replacement, and that if I had further trouble, to take it in for repair.
    Well, the local Apple Store's Genius Bar has been entirely booked up for two days now, and as my AppleCare trial has expired (though I'm under warrantee), I can't call Apple about it.
    Can I simply walk in and drop it off? Do I mail it to Apple myself? I've never had to send a machine in to Apple, but it's seemingly not as straightforward as I thought.... how long might I expect my turnaround time to be?

    There's really nothing "trial" about it, although I can see how it could be perceived that way. What expired was your 90 days of free phone support for any issue with your MBP, but since, as you know, you still have a one year hardware warranty, you still have free phone support for warranted hardware issues.

    As Kappy indicates, it's a very straightforward process. If Apple determines that you do have a hardware defect, they'll arrange for a shipper to drop off a shipping box and take it away when you've packed your MBP, and then they'll ship it back to your door when the repair is complete.

  • Grey restart and program crashes after logic board replacement?

    Apologies for if a thread already exists for this, I had a look around and nothing seems to quite fit the problems I'm experiencing-
    I recently got the logic board replaced on a 13-inch macbook pro, osx lion, 10.7.5. I got this done because of the failure of one of the usb ports and the centre row of typing keys.
    however (although the keys and usb now work), after the replacement, I have started to experience problems that weren't present before. These include:
    programs spontaneously crashing, examples being safari, itunes, and photoshop
    the computer spontaneously going into the grey textured screen and restarting all programs, but seemingly not initiating a full shut-down and restart
    itunes has deauthorised me and claims that there are already 5 computers authorised to the account. No new computers have been authorised during the repair time and attempts to deauthorise and reauthorise fail, this was not present before the repairs.
    video playback on youtube and similar sites can sporadically cut out completely, either freezing or causing the entire video 'screen' to white out or vanish
    playback of other moving graphics such as gifs often is jerky or replaced with transparent or white frames
    I've updated all my software to the latest versions just in case it was simply that I wasn't up to date with something, but to no avail. Is this a common error with a solution, or am I going to have to get the logic board replaced again? I'm still within my three-year warranty, but I don't appreciate the concept that I brought in my machine to be fixed, and it came back even more broken.

    The Logic Board of my iBook G4 14" 1.2 ghz recently died and is going to cost me almost £600 to make right!!!
    No I didn't buy Applecare. Call me stupid but I expected Apple machines to be a cut above bog-standard PC machines and assumed it'd last me a while.
    If I'd have known these issues before I made my purchase then I'd never have bought the machine - it's 2 years old for god's sake.
    I digress.................
    I've seen the posts on this board - multiple board replacements seem to be the norm, although by the looks of things the older ibooks seem to suffer the worst from this.
    My question is should I expect another board failiure? The service centre is offering me a 3 month warranty on the replacement parts. If my ibook goes down after that with the same problem then I'd be seriously annoyed that I just didn't buy a new MacBook instead. I see I could get hold of their lowest-spec machine for a few hundred pounds more.
    What do you guys think?

    You'll have to keep in mind that this is a technical support forum specifically for people who are having problems. The topics here do NOT reflect the experience of the vast majority of iBook owners. Apple regularly sold 250,00 iBooks each quarter, so if "multiple board replacements" were the norm, there would be thousands upon thousands of posts here about an issue like that.
    Apple did recognize a manufacturing defect in the G3 Dual USB iBooks and created a logic board replacement program for those that failed due to that specific defect. But, it was only for those that did fail and not all of them failed.
    Without knowing more about your need and use for your iBook, it will be difficult for us to determine the risk you face by paying for a replacement. There is currently a refurbished iBook 12" 1.33GHz /512DDR /40GB /Combo for £524.25 right now at the UK's "Special Deals" Web site. This computer would have the full Apple warranty and could take an AppleCare Protection Plan as well.

  • Logic Board replaced, Time Machine wont recognize old backups

    I just got my Logic Board replaced and obviously having the problem with Time Machine recognizing old backups. I looked at old forums and found the macosxhints page (http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20080128003716101) on how to fix the problem but when I try to enter cd /Volumes/Time Machine/Backups.backupdb into terminal it gives me a message saying "no such file or directory" i dont know where to go from here any help would be appreciated thanks for your time

    instead of Time Machine in that command you should enter "name of your TM drive" (put the name of your TM drive there and KEEP THE QUOTES). However, as you seem to be unfamiliar with terminal you will very likely have further problems following that hint. Try this one instead

    I am wondering if any folks who have sent their MacBooks in to get the logic board replaced (and received them back) could comment on the effectiveness of the replacement.
    I have been reading the boards avidly (as my MacBook is off in repair-land awaiting a logic board replacement) and noticed that some folks have been speculating that the logic board replacement won't fix anything.
    Could someone who has had a logic board replacement report on the effect? Did it fix the problem? (Note: my issue is/was that the macbook refused to turn on anymore after 3 weeks of problem-free use)

    About 8 hours after receiving it, my MacBook would not turn on. Called AppleCare and was told to bring it into an authorized service depot. Diagnosed as a faulty logic board, it was replaced and it's been fine ever since. 2 weeks and counting...

    hey guys,
    I've got a strange one. I had to have my logic board replaced in my Macbook Pro due to a nVidia graphics card dying. Time Machine was working like a champ before I dropped it off. When I got it back I got a TM error and it doesn't want to backup now. One thing that seems strange is that when I open a Finder window and then launch Time Machine, it's looking for files for Jonathan's Computer (2) instead of just Jonathan's Computer. (Yes, I'm Jonathan.) So it seems to be looking at some sort of duplicate or something. My backup files are on the TM drive and are searchable via Finder. However TM won't backup and I can't restore anything.
    Any thoughts as to what may have been borked and how to fix it? Thx.

    Why not? It's likely because the extra full backup has filled your TM drive.
    See item #C2 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip* at the top of this forum.
    It will show you how to locate the message(s) that describe the problem, then help you fix it.
    If that doesn't help, post back with details, including all the messages, your setup (especially the destination for the backups), what you've done, and the results.
    Also note #C8 which addresses the Logic Board problem.
