I'm giving my MBP 2011 to Apple tomorrow for a logic board replacement. Will they format my hard drive?

Hi,
I'll start with the issue. Sometimes randomly my laptop goes to sleep while im using it. It is impossible to wake up from this sleep and forces me to force power off the device. Apple did some tests and concluded I need to replace the logic board.
I have a few questions.
I understand they use refurbished logic boards, is it possibly I end up with a worse logic board.
The hard drive does not need to be formated, will they format it? I have backups but I understand time machine can become troublesome after a logic board replacement. I have a very specific set up and I would need it just as it is.
Thanks

They very likely will, and they may return it with the version of OS X originally installed.
We are users like you, so we are in no position to tell you about such hardware repairs.
You should have a full backup available. Time Machine will not recognize the computer as your old one neither to restore or to backup. Time Machine will start a completely new backup. My advice is to make a bootable clone you can easily restore:
Clone Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
     1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
         button.
     2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
     3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
     4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
         to the Destination entry field.
     5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
         the Source entry field.
     6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.

  • 3rd Logic Board replacement: will Apple give me a new computer?

    Hello Ronda and Friends,
I am a professional guidebook and magazine writer, currently traveling around the world with an iBook which loves to crash its logic board right before book deadlines, usually very far from Mac centers. The first time was in Belize (had to ship it back to US at great expense), the second time in Pakistan (got logic board replaced 6 weeks later in Delhi, this was only 5 months ago), and the third, the day before yesterday, here in Chiang Mai, Thailand, which thankfully has a Mac repair center.
I've got 3 months left on Applecare and plan on replacing the logic board again, though I have 6 months left on this current trip, which will soon take me very far from Mac repair shops (i.e. Africa). I am constantly working on deadlines, and if this third board craps out in Kenya, I'll be pretty screwed.
After reading a few archived logic board sob stories here, some seemed to suggest that there are cases where Apple would grant a new model iBook, if that person's livelihood depended on it which mine certainly does.
Please advise as soon as possible so I know whether to go ahead with the logic board replacement here. Or let me know who I should contact in customer relations.
Thank you -- and if you are interested in my travels, go to

Dual USB iBook   Mac OS X (10.3.3)   3rd logic board crash

Hi, Joshua. Welcome to Apple Discussions. Again isn't it, as I seem to remember your logic board failure in Pakistan, yes?
It seems to be the usual thing that Apple wants three attempts at repair (which means four logic board failures) before considering a replacement. However, nothing ventured, nothing gained. Especially since your livelihood depends on a working iBook, I'd advise you to ask for a replacement.
Apple Phone Contacts includes a number for Thailand:
    http://www.apple.com/contact/phone_contacts.html
But do not mess around with Customer Service. Ask for Customer Relations. Tell them that your iBook has a habit of losing its logic board at the most inopportune times and in the most inopportune places. Be prepared to give them dates and details of repairs, and stress how vital your iBook is to your livelihood and that lost computer time is lost income. Tell them you need a computer you can count on, and your iBook, much as you love it, just isn't getting the job done for you. Then ask for a replacement.
If Thailand won't do it for you, I think you should invest a call to the U.S. Again, don't settle for Customer Support; immediately ask for Customer Relations and give them the same sad story and ask for a replacement. It won't hurt to emphasize the fact that you have AppleCare.
Failure in Africa equals a trip to the Netherlands for repair (at least from what I've read here). One person in Africa didn't have his iBook for months. You really need a dependable iBook to take to Africa. Tell them so.
    Good luck.

  • I love macs and mac os but what hard ware is still getting maid by apple, the ata drives and ram are maid by companies like Samson and Toshiba and the processors are maid by intel. do apple still make the logic board or do they just focus on the case.

Firs of all i want to make it clear that i dont hate macs, i think they are the beast computers in the world. Im just wondering if apple are givving up making harware for them self,

    Hello,
I don't think Apple has actually "made" any hardware for years, they design it & have others build it.

  • Macbook Pro Mid-2012 Logic Board replacement, Apple Dragging feet?

    First some background:
I have a macbook pro 13" Mid-2012 non retina covered under applecare until Jan. 2016. Starting in late march, i had noticed some performance issues but never took it in as the issue would subside within a day or two. Going into the final two week of my college semester, the macbook started freezing and tacking almost 5 minutes to boot. Suddenly it would take 5 tries just to get it to boot. due to this, i had been unable to get the time machine backup to work as it would freeze for 12 hours on average.
So thenI took my macbook pro into the local authorized apple service center (on April 29th) as i suddenly got 'open error 5: input output error' errors and my mbp wouldnt boot at all. When i spoke to the servicer, he and I agreed that at minimum the hard drive was failing. The servicer made a time machine backup of the data on the hdd and got the backup on my external drive. He asked to keep the external drive as it has a partition that is a USB install disk of the latest Mavericks. Soon after he got the data backed up, the hard drive showed signs of failure to happen soon. So we agreedto have him replace the hdd. He hoped to have my macbook to me by May 5th. Well on May 5th, i got a call from him that with the replacement hard drive, the computer still had similar issues and was able to track it down to logic board issues. We agreed that since he had the macbook pro already and since it was applecare covered, we should go ahead and replace the logic board. Anyways, he ordered a new logic board from apple last monday (May 5th, 2014). I called on Thursday for an update and the servicer was frustrated with Apple that something is going on and he hasnt received the part as Apple usually gets him these parts within 1-2 days of request. He said he will call me once Apple gets him the part as he will get on the repair once the part comes in.  He hasnt called me back yet.
This is rather frustrating for me as my macbook had all my college files on it and this problem happened right before college finals (i technically lost about 2 months worth of web design files and class files) where much of what needed for finals was on that computer. if he could have gotten it back by the 7th as he'd hoped, i would have been fine.  Instead, i was forced to go back to my PC laptop and try recreating some of the files that were made by mac only applications into something similar on windows. i was unable to recover the web design files as they were on the macbook and i couldnt remember right off which folder it was in. So i had to scrape together things to be able to submit for my finals so i wouldnt totally bomb the course. My web design instructor understood how frustrated I got from losing all that work and having to settle for a final design that just met the requirments rather than the one on the mac that was well past it.
He is not sure whats going on as the last time he ordered a logic board for the same model, he had it by the end of business the next day. He is apoligizing for everything . I am not frustrated with him, rather I am frustrated with Apple as they had recommended me to take it in ASAP, yet they are seemingly dragging thier feet on getting him the parts.
On top of this, I am helping a neighbor modernize her business website, and am doing a project with the state unemployement office to help them redo thier videos. Both of these are things i would always use my mac for as it is like 5x faster than my pc on this stuff. It's more than just an inconvience now. I need my mac badly as the PC is just not fast enough to do what i need in the itme i am given (which i why i switched to mac as my primary computer).
Is this common for Apple when it comes to logic board replacements for macbook pros or what?
Has anyone else had this issue?

Applecare was no help at all. I called and did the complaint. They confirmed that it is registered to me and everything but essetially told me that they cant give me answers as to what is taking so long. They knew a repair was in progress but wanted to set me up with an appointment at an apple store? (the nearest Apple retail store is Billings which is 240 miles away, or about 4 hours). i tell them its at the repair place and they go on to tell me they can send me a box to mail it in and have it reapir by them.. They are trying to shift the blame to the AASP and his rep. But he said he has been trying with very few answers from Apple as well

  • Apple installed a new logic board and now iTunes music is all gone and I cannot log into store or authorize my Mac

I have an early  2011 i7 MacBook Pro running OSX 10.9.4. Earlier this week I had Geniuses at the Apple Store install a new logic board to replace a failed one. My hard drive was not touched. Anyway, when I got home and launched iTunes, I discovered that none of the tens of thousands of legally purchased songs in my iTunes library were listed, even though they actually still exist in my Music folder. Additionally, my attempts to login to the iTunes Store with my valid and correct and accurate and current Apple ID with the correct password, did not work. In fact,  no errors were generated. The logins simply erased my input after clicking SIGN IN and then the "Sign In" form came back empty.
As a developer and 28+ year user of the Mac, I was a little stunned to say the least. The Apple Store logic board replacement process should take into account iTunes authentication problems when replacing failed logic boards, but this issue was not discussed at all, in any form during the repair intake process. So, I now have a 'fixed' MacBook Pro that will not acknowledge my thousands of legally purchased songs and will not let me log into the iTunes Store with my valid credentials or authorize or de-authorize my Mac.
Indeed, iTunes Match is also disabled, which means $30 thrown away in paid subscription.
Does anyone know a workaround to this Apple flaw that can correct their mistake and re-enable my Mac for using my thousands of legally purchased songs?
Any feedback would be most appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Larry

Having your main logic board replaced wouldn't erase music from your hard drive, if it was actually stored on the drive. Your iTunes music resides in your user home folder in a folder called Music.
When you do get a logic board replaced, however, it is a good idea to have the computer first de-authorized from iTunes since you are only permitted to associate your iTunes Store account DRM purchases (movies, tv shows, and older digital-rights-managed music) with up to five computers. See Deauthorize your computer using iTunes.
When a new logic board is installed, you'll need to reauthorize the Mac again. It's not the end of the world, however, if this step wasn't initially taken. See Authorize your computer using iTunes.
...As for not seeing your music when you launch iTunes—try point iTunes to the correct location of your iTunes folder. To do this, quit iTunes. Press the option key and click the iTunes icon in the dock. It will then ask you to navigate to the location of your iTunes music (again usually located in the Music folder in your home folder).

  • Did Apple mess up my logic board? (Fan always 4000 rpm!)

So I just had my logic board replaced because I was having sleep/wake problems and I think that problem has resolved, but now I have noticed a new problem. My fan seems to jump directly to 4000 rpm during start up and sits there always despite low activity. I have installed smcFanControl and it is reporting a CPU temp of 39-40 ˚C, so this can't be a normal fan setting at that temperature. I am sure Apple could have messed something up installing my logic board but I was wondering if there was anything else to try to fix this problem before giving them a call. I hate sending this thing in because I really need it for class. Anyway, I have tried an SMC reset and that did not do anything. I will try booting from an external HD to see if that resolves problem (I'm sure it won't). Anyone have advise on what to do? Thanks!

Apparently smcFC was the culprit. I noticed it had a crash log in my console and when I booted from my external my fan was fine. Uninstalled smcFC and the problem has resolved.

I want to create a movie in iMovie 10 and watch in on Apple TV. What is the best work flow to save hard drive space?

    Jim,
Thanks for the advice. I have avoided iMovie Theater because that would soon use all of my free iCloud allowance (although that could be an option). I have been sharing to iTunes at 720p thinking that my picture using Apple TV would be better than Large. I see now that I could use about 30% less hard drive space by using Large instead. Do you think I will experience an annoying difference in picture quality?

  • Submit their phone to apple store for sleep/wake button replacement?

who have submit their phone to apple store for sleep/wake button replacement? share please

Hi  I just did it for mine today (in the UK) in the Genius Bar at our local Apple Store.
The process was quite long, involving the iPhone being wiped and sent through diagnostic checks (to make sure that the phone didn't have any other problems and to verify ownership I assume) but they gave me a loan phone and it's now sent off - turnaround is about a week.
Just one further issue was that when I checked my serial number at home against the 'replacement programme' https://ssl.apple.com/support/iphone5-sleepwakebutton/ my phone came up as "not eligible" but when the genius bar entered it in their mac-book it said it was eligible!  Probably just me entering the serial number wrong so I don't know for sure.
I'll let you know how I get on.

  • Has Apple ever fixed the fan issue that results from upgrading the hard drives on 2009-2010 iMacs?

Has Apple ever fixed the fan issue that results from upgrading the hard drives on 2009-2010 iMacs?
My CPU fan defaults to 3000RPM.  I can rev the fan higher with 3rd party Fan controllers, but no lower than 3K.

OR you can short out the original temp sensor, to make the fans rev at quieter speeds.
You can also install an optical temp sensor in place of the old one, it will still read temps and adjust the fans accordingly, just not as good as an internal sensor.
    Use something like this:http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-922-9229-Cable-Temp-Sensor-Optical-iMac-27-inch-Late -2009-2010-/111106349896

  • Advice for faulty logic board (early 2010 MBP)

So my logic board needs replaced.
I went to the Apple store and they told me as it is under warranty that they will replace it for free. Im not sure how its under warranty as its over 4 years old? Although I have heard that this issue is common and Apple are at fault for the logic board issue?
Anyway I get a call a couple of days later to say that as I swapped out my optical drive for an HDD that it has voided my warranty. They now say it is going to cost £416 to fix!
I just want some advice as to what people think I should do really. The laptop cost around £1800 when new but is probably not worth half of that now if it was in working order. Should I suck it up and pay the price? Should I sell the laptop for parts and buy a new model? Should I try another Apple store?
I was also considering swapping the optical drive back in and bringing it to another Apple store but are there records kept of my serial number etc. where they could still tell?
    Any advice would be appreciated.

Buy a new computer or fix yours. Apple will provide no support for it since you voided the warranty.

grey screen no apple followed by blue screen with vertical lines. Graphics and logic board replaced <6 months ago. What to do? I held down shift, it gets HOT HOT and makes noises. (for safety mode) followed by a blank grey screen and blue screen. Then tried the other way (sorry, I think  it's command alt delete? I don't remember) and it turned from grey (no apple symbol) to blue blank. Then third time, grey followed by blue with vertical lines, not blocky clear lines that you can see if you are close to it.
    Thanks for any help!

You have to take the computer to the Apple store to have it checked out.

    hello apple,
    i have Macbook 8,2 Quoad core Intel i7 2.0Ghz 2011.
the problem is it not working on startup (startup with blue , gray or black screen)
already go to apple service center, they said i have to replace the new Logic Board 2.0Ghz.
but i would like to replace to 2.3GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 Logic Board.
my question why can not replace 2.3GHz quad-core Intel Core i7.
you know why because it bulit in USB 3 ports (up to 5 Gbps).
    Many Thank,
    Manthou Khorn

The 2011 MBPs do not have USB 3 Ports.
Check with iFixit.com and Powerbookmedic.com for logic boards for your MBP.  They will have prices and installation instructions.
    Ciao.

  • Apple Care will not return my Hard drive.

I have a Power Book G4 1.67 . The hard drive has failed, it is covered under applecare for another 6 months, I have case number, the person on the phone was very nice, they sent the shipping box.
I think it's more then just the HD, however. The drive was partitioned in 3 sectors. Of course the system sector was the one that failed. I can boot in Target Disk Mode and see the other 2 sectors of the drive. The system sector is the one that is bad, I can't get that info off there. I am sure someone else can who is better qualified can. I really need that info, I can see they system partition in Disk Warrior, but am not a guru in that or the couple of other products I bought to see if I could rescue this info.
I asked AC Rep if I could have the Hard Drive back, they said no, I asked if they would back up the information, they said no, I said I would pay for either back up or pay for the old hard drive myself, (again) they said no.
So now I am stuck, if I replace that HD myself, I may void the warranty, I know it's a customer installable part. I have replaced many over my apple years, upgrading HDs about every 2 years in multiple computers and putting the old ones in external cases. I have also upgraded RAM, airport cards, pram batteries so I am comfortable working the simple upgrades. So I could simply replace that Hard Drive and then send it in, but then they may blame me for the problem.
There also smaller problems, screen latch won't stay closed, superdrive will not eject correctly, screen has some lines in it occasionally. It's not a road warrior, but I use it a lot and always treat these well. The drive was making no noise at all and no indication of a impeding failure. I treat my machines very carefully, I still have a Pismo that is gasping it's last breath.
This HD has all my important passwords and other personal info, I was in the middle of backing it up when thing went blitz. I saved the data from the other 2 partitions but I need that HD. Why will they not return my old part ? Or even back it up for a fee. I am afraid to replace the HD with a new one, and then send it off, or even try to reboot it from a new one as I maybe be stuck with it and they say well I did the damage.
Yes I know multiple back ups, but this is the first HD failure in 20 years and I should have had 2 HDs for back ups instead of one. Any other part I could see their point, but that HD has information I need and I don't want someone having it either. Is there a fair solution here.
This thing has been down a week, I just got the box and I need to do something. There is no Apple store up here and the company that can do the repairs, messed up a iBook G4, so the only option is sending it out to apple care.
    Ideas and Suggestions?
    Geoff

Well Holy Smoke !! Apple has agreed to let me get my data back a bit of a round about way but we will see.
I am going to use a hard drive recovery service so it will go like this.
A" local service provider," whom did not do anything at all to fix an iBook I gave them, under Apple Care to repair, but keep it 3 weeks and then said, I could not find anything by Goggling the problem...I see the problem that cursor is all over the place and jumps anywhere it wants., a problem came up and by the time we got back the iBook was out of warranty . Sometimes the local help is tough, but I try to support them.
I think, with me standing there, they can remove the hard drive from my powerbook, it's pretty easy..
Then, with Apple Care's blessing, I can send the drive into a recovery company, yes expensive, then return the drive in parts if that is the way it comes back, with my powerbook, ship it and AppleCare will fix it the PowerBook.
That is really good, and if all goes well, I will be very impressed and not hesitate to get that new
MBP. They even offered to let me take out the drive, but I thought, better to keep it in the "Apple Family."
Now they did not send a letter or email to this effect, that would have made me feel better, but the attitude at Apple, has really changed, these people went multiple times to supervisors to get this answer and solution. Not the quickest way to get it fixed, but
I am willing to bend, if they are willing to alter what is a well oiled line and will create a bump in their flow..
We will see, I told them they just might get a bag of parts and I will not reinstall the bad drive, as it is most definitely shot. No problem, it's all in the notes the CSR said.
We will see, but for today, this is sure a different attitude then the last go around, a few years ago. The CSR people are nice, understand English, as they seem to be based in Canada, which is a whole lot better then anywhere else I would want to talk too, or have talked to. They can understand abstract ideas, unlike those who just read from a card and stick to what the card says.
I am holding my breath, but I hope to report that this all goes smooth. I liked it when Apple was a good company. People went out of their way to help you no matter it took to get it fixed or working. I think a company can be good, profitable, plus have a excellent CSR and repair program.
For today at least, here is to Apple, way to go.
    Geoff
