Sent my PB in for horizontal line issue repair.......but.........

Just got back from the apple store and showed a genius my display and to my surprise he said he could see the issue at the upper half of the of the screen. I tried to show him the crankycat image but he said there was no need.
I then told hime that the part needed to be used for replacement according to other sufferers is the 646-0324 DSPL, 15.2, WXGA++,SAMSUNG,Q16C part but he said apple don't use that part number here (i live in london). i then ask if the display will be replaced anyway....he says yes.
When i get the repair sheet, i dont see anything mentioning display replacement, all i see is a "Flat Rate Repair Charge, PowerBook G4 15"-£170" and Labor Charge, PowerBook G4 15" - £100".
These don't sound really promising. I then request that they test the replacement display with the crankycat image and he goes."everything will be tested properly before despatch dont worry"
From what i gather the guy just wanted to rush and get things outta the way so he could go home.
I really don't think this will get fixed, but lets hope apple proves me wrong this once.

Update- line issue has been fixed

Because Apple does not accept International shipments, if you mailed your phone directly to Apple. You can send the phone to a friend/relative, & they can take it to an Apple store for you.
Also, to get your phone servised in the US, it must have been purchased in the US.

  • Capturing Hi8 - Interlacing/horizontal line issues

Hi everyone. I'm in the process of transferring some old Hi8 home movies to my computer via Quicktime Pro's record feature. I have the recording preference set to 'Device Native' and as I'm recording, the picture looks great. But when it's done recording and I playback the saved .mov file the picture looks different (horizontal lines....some sort of interlacing issue). Does anyone know what causes this? I'm transferring the tapes via a Sony digital-8 camera w/ firewire. I'm no video expert, so any help is appreciated. Thanks a lot!

The Hi8 footage is interlaced. If you not going to dvd but going to view this on a computer screen you need to de-interlace the video.
Here's a free program that will de-interlace the video, MPEG-Streamclip. Not the best in the world for de-interlacing, but for a free program and it's not that bad.

  • Skinning in 11.1.2.2 (horizontal lines issue)

    Hello,
    I followed Shays on-line tutorial
    [https://blogs.oracle.com/shay/entry/adf_faces_skin_editor_how]
It was very helpful and informative and I defined new colours for all the images using the skinning editor
However, I now have the situation depicted in this image link
    [http://i48.tinypic.com/zsg83.png]
Is there a way to avoid the horizontal lines on the Form?
As you can see, containers don't have the same issue (although you can see the horizontal lines between the accordion and the panelobox components).
Has anyone else encountered the same problem?
    Thanks
p.s. does anyone know what I need to change for the top part of the showdetailitem in the panneltabbed container to be red as well instead of white? (the bit just below the tabs)

    for future reference (my own)
when adjusting the colour scheme on the skin editor image tab, avoid changing .AFLightBackground and .AFLightestNeutralBackground
Adjusting either of these appears to create horizontal lines on the most basic of JSF pages

  • Horizontal line issue -- some new thoughts

    Hello there.
Regarding the horizontal lines / waves issue, has anyone else noticed that the intensity of the problem varies with the position on screen? The problem is especially visible in the upper left corner of my screen, yet is almost non-existent in the lower right corner. From the upper-left to the lower-right corner, the problem degrades. This is true for both the "lines" issue and the "waves" appearing.
You can try yourself by setting your desktop background to "Tile" and using (part of) the Crankycat picture (you can download a cropped version at http://siteffects.be/maarten/powerbook.png).
On my machine, the waves problem is very visible in the light-blue "Sources" area of iTunes (i.e. left part of iTunes, so coincidentally in the "worst" part of the screen). When moving the iTunes window to the right, the problem eventually disappears.
On a sidenote, has anyone tried to use the Powerbook with Linux? I'm really wondering whether a completely different operating system would solve the problem. I've tried using Ubuntu live CD's (both stable version and new "Dapper" version), but they do not seem to work. In general, I have the impression that you need kernel 2.6.15, which is the only one supporting the latest Powerbook.

    Hi Sebastian,
When using sRGB (not IEC61966-2.1), I do see what you observe, however it is not THAT apparent.
Except. If I increase the contrast of the screen one notch (CTRLOption+Apple.), the heavy lines/wavy lines is very obvious. But if you increase contrast two notches they go away completely. Interestingly, on my dispaly, if you chose Generic RGB, and increase the contrast one notch, the whole orange panel shows heavy banding.
You can reduce back the contrast with (CTRLoption+Apple,)
Yes, the bottom right is less of a problem than the top left. But I can just about perceive the horizontal banding.
The same cannot be said of the horizontal pixel lines in the lilac panel. These only disappear if I increase the contrast so much that the display looks terrible. (e.g. until the lilac become almost pure blue). And the problem is the same everywhere on the screen.

  • L655D-S5055 LCD horizontal line issue - possible motherboard or GPU failing??

    Hello,
A few weeks ago a horizontal line running from the left edge to the right edge of the LCD about 2 1/4"
from the bottom of the LCD started to occur.  The line shows up from the time the screen turns on
and remains in CMOS or the Win 7 desktop.  I have replaced the LCD panel with a new OEM LCD
panel, this did not resolve the issue.  I replaced the internal video cable, this did not resolve the issue.
Since the line occurs in the CMOS screen (DOS prompt screen) or in Win7, there is not video driver
issue I believe.  I also updated the L655D BIOS to the latest v2.10  Nothing has resolved the issue.
Is this possibly a sign of a GPU issue at the motherboard level? I have noted that the space below the line does "flicker" or distort the image, but only below the line.  The rest of the image on the screen stays without any problem.  I have also attached the laptop to an external monitor which has no line like this or any issues with the display at all.  Thus the reason I had originally concluded the LCD panel and internal
    video cable.
Does anyone know if this is a known problem with specific motherboards with this model laptop, or GPUs?
Is there a replacement motherboard program for this laptop as this is certainly a quality issue that should
not be left for the enduser to replace the motherboard and be charged a high cost repair such as this!
I appreciate any guidance or advice on this issue.  I have attached two pictures for reference of this problem.
One shows the line in a Command prompt screen, the other while in Win 7.
[Updated: 2-Apr-2013]  based on further research and experience with other similar issues, I am beginning to think this is related to heat and the GPU impacted by poor quality soldering or some other issue of that nature.  I have performed "reballing" with other products, but am not sure about whether this issue can be resolved or how to go about an effective "reball" for this product motherboard.  A replacement, used motherboard is hard to find and if found are over $150USD.  Again, it seems unfair to the consumer to have a laptop like this for 4 years and need to replace the motherboard or live with this issue until the unit fails completely.
    Thank you in advance.

  • Line reported repaired, but still phone is unusabl...

I've waited (a few days to be honest) after my landline was diagnosed as being faulty. Now that it is reportedly back, the problem persists, viz. that people contacting me hear handset ring, but I don't. When I pick it up to make a call a number of rings start up but the process finishes early.
Would i be right to infer that I need a new 'phone. The present phone - BT Freestyle 7110 - is now perhaps obsolescent.
My issue is whether to risk buying a new phone that I did not need, because my problem has not really been resolved.

Even better than borrowing a phone, nip down to your local Argos and get a corded one for less than a fiver. Apart from being able to test your line, you'll be pleased to have it the next time you want to make a call, or someone calls you, during a power cut.

  • Horizontal lines on new PowerBook display

Here is my experience with the new PowerBook display/horizontal lines issue. Please post any constructive advice you have that I can try - either to eliminate the problem or to pinpoint the cause more accurately.
I used to own a 15" Powerbook from about 12 months ago, a 1.33GHz model. The display on this was fine. Much better, in terms of brightness and clarity, than my other HP & Dell Windows laptops. When the PowerBook was stolen, one of the main reasons for immediately buying a new replacement PowerBook was the superior display quality.
At the start of November the replacement PowerBook arrived - a 15" hi-res 1.67GHz model. The faint grey horizontal lines covering the whole display were immediately visible. The display is substandard compared to both the previous PowerBook model and my Dell laptop.
Apple Care telephone helpline suggested an NVRAM reset and a PMU reset. Neither of these made any difference.
The PowerBook was then sent back for replacement and a week or so later the new replacement arrived. This also had exactly the same problems.
Apple Care helpline this time said that they could not find any problems with the PowerBook and I should first try the PowerBook connected to an external monitor and secondly take it to an Apple Dealer to show the problem.
I tried it on an external monitor, but unfortunately this is only an old Nokia 15" CRT monitor and though the lines appeared to not be there, the quality of the monitor makes the result inconclusive.
Next up, I will take the PowerBook to the Apple Store. At the same time I have copied "Aqua Blue.bmp" onto my Dell laptop. With the two laptops side by side showing the same image, the defect in the PowerBook display is clearly visible. I hope to be able to take both machines to the Apple Store later this week. I will let the forum know the results...
So, are there any other tips/advice from users as to other tests I can run or other methods to improve the issue?
    Many thanks!

    n2o2,
I don't know what let you think that you will eventually receive an AluBook without stripe : Apple Care let you think that ???????.
I have been reading the stripes topics each day since I ordered my new powerbook, late october. I did not see one single post proving that a "free line" 15" powerbook does exist.
The real evidence would come from someone describing the difference between a "non affected" new powerbook sitting besides an affected one, coming from the same PB generation and with exactely the same LCD profile and screen / Colorsync settings.
I did not see a single story like that among the hundred(s) of posts related to horizontal lines.
I have read one post stating that the screen is "crystal clear" and "sharp". The one I received today could be described like that, but it displays those lines, except from the 8 or 10 upper rows of pixels on the menu bar.
The pb15_problems.png file is a very interesting one to me, as it demonstrates that the lines could clearly be attenuated using a single filter without compromising the sharpness/Brightness of the image.
If I compare side by side my 3months old previous generation powerbook and the new one, I must say that (except for the stripes) there is not much difference in daylight in terms of brightness but a perceptible better brightness in the complete darkness.
Well, if someone could prove that some of the new powerbook do not display this "feature", this would certainly push me to return mine. But, seeing how it is difficult to get this organized, I may not want an exchange but a refund, or an upgrade for a 17".
Please tell us quick if you win this battle.

  • My good story with the 15" horizontal lines

I too received a 15" DL PowerBook with horizontal lines. I didn't record its serial number, but it did begin with W85 (one of the implicated serial batches). I took it back to the Apple Store after owning it for 4 days, spending most of that time researching what's really going on with all this. After using the pic that someone posted here in the forums (thank you!) to prove to the Genius Bar guys that there's a problem, they finally understood - even though Apple is currently "investigating the issue". They ultimately swapped out the machine for a new one.
My new machine has a serial beginning with W85, but it doesn't have the horizontal line issue. I'm incredibly pleased, and I hope this brings some positive vibes to an otherwise bleak story of yet another Apple 1st gen hardware issue.
    17 iMac G5 1.8 Ghz, 15" DL PowerBook G4 1.67 GHz.   Mac OS X (10.4)

Wow! This is great news. I really had lost hope here, there were too many reports of people just getting bad displays back time after time.
Only problem for me is that I have had the machine for well over a month, and it is BTO with 7200rpm drive...
I'd like to be able to take it to the store, open one up and test before I swap.
Although... I did alert Applecare of the problem a few weeks ago and told them to record my complaint and to contact me if they learn of a fix. I hope this will help. Thing is that it is getting to close to christmas now, and I'll be travelling around with the laptop.... hmmm.
Hey - you know what? I just noticed that my machine also makes these squeaky beeps when I type! What the ****? It only occurs when I am in the middle of this message composition pane - not on the lowest line, and not in the Subject line, and not in Word.
It is really high-pitched and annoying - arrrgh!
I heard someone else talk about this, and I had no idea what they meant. (sorry for this being off topic - but does anyone else hear this? - specific to the Apple Forum message compostion pane.)
It does not come through the speaker/headphone output.

  • Horizontal Line & Non-Horizontal line...

I tried to fix the Horizontal Line and Non-Horizontal line because it is not work. I put the public void paint(graphic g) then I already put the rectangle -> g.drawrect(100,100,300,250)
    2) Horizontal Line: y-coordinate is 300 --> g.drawline(0,0,0,300) 3) Non-horizontal line: through points (185,100) and (310,350) --> g.drawline(185,100,125,150) let me know.. If i am wrong for Horizontal Line. ???
    Thanks

Could you please let us know what is the current status of the screen. How did you solve it.
I am facing the same problem and mine is 13 inch macbook pro early 2011 model.
A line of single pixel width comes on my screen and it has been like that for over a week now.
I am worried ...Please suggest if I can use the laptop and if the line propagates further?.
    Thanks...

  • DL Powerbook horizontal lines become cross-hatch pattern

I'm experiencing the same horizontal line issue as many others have reported.
I decided to try changing the number of colors my diplay uses from millions to thousands. After doing this, I notice a cross-hatch or regular little squares pattern instead of horizontal lines. It is epecially obvious on light grays such as the gray behind "Apple Discussions" at the top of this web page.
When I use the digital color meter app with millions of colors, the gray I'm talking about is one uniform 88.6% in RGB, but when I change to thousands, a regular pattern of 90.6% and 87.1% RGB pops out. And, when I move the window around the desktop, the pattern of dark and light grays changes, but always from one obviously regular pattern to another.
When I do the same changes and measurements on my old 17" cinema display hooked up to a powermac G4, the RGB numbers are approximately the same, but there is no (easily recognizable) regular pattern. So instead of looking like a cross-hatch or a bunch of little squares or whatever, it just looks gray. With thousands of colors, my new powerbook chooses to draw a regular pattern in a solid color, while my old powermac doesn't and the pattern it chooses depends on the window's position on the screen.
I don't know if it means anything, but it's clearly a difference in color display between a cinema display with no horizontal lines and a new powerbook with horizontal lines.
But, this doesn't work in millions of colors. The DCM tells me there are no color differences in the light gray, even though my eye can clearly see horizontal lines.
    Any thoughts?

    Hi Charles,
You're quite right in this description.
I noticed the sort of textured look on the screen even before I noticed the lines. It's kind of like the texture of a polo tshirt only very subtle and finely detailed.
Anyway, how did your attempt to return it at the Apple Store on Miracle Mile go?

  • Black screen on startup; horizontal lines on screen precede crash

A few days ago my Mac Book Pro screen freaked out. Specifically, it had multicolored horizontal lines all over, but underneath I could see a dark grey dialogue box telling my to restart the computer.
Now, about two thirds of the time, when I try to start up the screen stays black and it does not make any startup noises but the power light comes on steady. One time this was accompanied by a beeping tone that beeped in sets of three. The other one third of the time it starts up fine.
Once it shut itself down after the horizontal lines appeared again.
Once it has frozen while on the screensaver and I had to manually shut it down.
Any idea what might be causing this? My computer is still under warrantee but I live over an hour and a half from the nearest apple store.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
If you have the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT video chip, you might be developing this problem:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377
The beeps and kernel panic do seem to point to a RAM problem. If you replaced the original Apple RAM with 3rd party RAM, try the Apple RAM if you still have it and see if this cures the problem. Otherwise, try reseating it as described earlier.
Here is an article that may be of help:
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html
Finally, since you are so far from an Apple Store, call Apple on the phone and explain your problems. It's possible that they could refer you to an AASP in your area that could evaluate your machine and save you a trip. It's also possible they could determine that you have some sort of hardware problem and could send you a box to ship your Mac to the Repair Depot. In any event, be sure to contact Apple while your warranty is in effect and get a case number, especially if you are getting close to the end of your Applecare.
    Good luck!

  • Horizontal lines for each rows in the rtf template

    Hi,
I am a newbie for XML Publisher. I just created a XML Publisher report for Vendor invoices. But for each invoice/invoice line rows I am getting a horizontal line which separates each row. But I just wanted the vertical line to separate the columns and not for the rows.
For example, the output looks like
    Invoice number | Item Description| Quantity|
    123__________| xyz__________|_____30 |
    _____________| xyz__________|_____30 |
    _____________| xyz__________|_____30 |
    345__________| xyz__________|_____30 |
I am getting the report some this like this. But I need the report like below,
    Invoice number | Item Description| Quantity|
    123__________| xyz__________|_____30 |
    _____________| xyz__________|_____30 |
    _____________| xyz__________|_____30 |
    345__________| xyz__________|_____30 |
(Please consider the ____ as space)
Please suggest me some solution. tons of thanks in advance.

    Hi Vetsrini,
Thanks for your prompt reply. I hope I had put the tag that you had mentioned. But anyhow I had sent your the template and the sample XML file to see the output.
I have one more question also I want a curvey edge for the table and no tthe sharp edge like this _|. If possible please suggest for this also.
    Looking forward for your reply.

  • Toshiba 46G310U turns on for a few seconds the goes black with a horizontal line

I have a Toshiba 46G310U that when it is first plugged up it will come on for a few seconds and show a great beautiful picture, then the screen goes dark with a horizontal line across the screen that eventually fades out too. Turning the TV off and back on does not help, If I leave it unplugged for 5 minutes with the source unplugged also, it will come on when plugged back up for a few minutes at the most then starts the whole turning dark with the horizontal line that fades completely out. I've aready replaced the inverter board, the T-con board, and now I am at a stand still because I can find any help with the problem for starters(Toshiba Tech support was NO help and was unwilling to listen to my problem), second I am thinking possible power supply problem but I am having problems finding the power supply board, the main logic board, and the two small narrow boards that the T-con plugs into above the LCD display. Display has to be good for the picture to be perfect before fading to dark. Back light is also good as I can see it when the display goes dark it still has a glow and with the back of the TV off I can see the actual back light panel shinning. Suggestions? No I won't call tech support back as it was a horrible experience dealing with the rude techs. Thanks in advance.

The tech at Toshiba support was rude and seemed more interested in what was happening in the office then my issue with the TV. I've talked to a local tv service shop and they had no clue about the LCD type of tvs. I just would like to know if it is the main logic/input board or the power supply board. I can find the power board but have had no luck with the main board. Mr.. Moderator if you have any suggestions from Toshiba I would be very appreciative of your help. Thank y
