Sequence settings for combining HD videos, SD videos, and stills to DVD?

Hi,
After reading through the forum, I am still not sure whether I should be using the "lowest common denominator" sequence (DV NTSC preset to match the avi footage), the "highest quality" sequence (DSLR 720p preset to match the mov footage), or the sequence which best matches my desired final output (i.e. DV NTSC for DVD output) for a project consisting of HD 720p mov, SD 480i avi, and jpeg source files.
Obviously, a newbie like me should be using Windows Live Movie Maker or even PE9 rather than PP CS5 but I hate not having a timeline (among other things missing in WLMM) and I'd like to make use of the 8GB of RAM with my Windows 7 64bit system when editing the HD footage.
Thanks in advance for your feedback and any other suggestions you may have.

So there shouldn't be an issue if I use source video clips with lower audio sample rates for a sequence with a 48kHz sample rate...
There should be no real issue, as PrPro is very good at handling most common Bit-depths and Sample-rates. Just allow the program to go completely through the Conforming process. Depending on one's computer and the Duration (plus CODEC's, etc.), this should not take very long - just be patient.
Good luck,
Hunt
PS - I agree completely with Harm's comment on up-rezzing SD to HD, however there are a few programs, like Red Giant's Instant HD, that do a pretty good job. If your final output is SD, then definitely go with Harm's suggestions and down-rez (Effect>Motion>Scale) for the HD material.
PPS - for inclusion of stills, I Scale my images in PS to match my Project's/Sequence's Frame Size, though I have it from a very good source (Todd), that PrPro CS5 has improved the Scaling algorithms over previous versions.

I'm trying to edit video footage from the new Canon 5D mkII and I don't know the sequence settings. The playback is really stuttery and jittery so I'm wondering if there's a plug-in or something that I need. Does anyone know?
    Thanks in advance!

That shoots h.264 I believe, which is a delivery codec, not an editing codec.

  • Sequence Settings for HD to SD DVD

I have an HD Camcorder that records to a flash 8 GB memory card. Once I import the files into Final Cut Pro, I need to export using Compressor with the "DVD Best Quality for 90 minutes" option. The problem is that Compressor takes forever. Over 60 hours estimated.
I've tried changing the sequence settings before I add the footage to the timeline, but no matter which settings I use for the sequence, it still takes over 60 hours to export.
I've tried matching the video settings with the sequence, and almost any other combination I can think, but there are simply too many "Trial & Error" options to go through.
Is there a setting(s) for the sequence in Final Cut Pro, that when you export to Compressor it doesn't take that long?
    Any suggestions would be great?
    Thanks.

David, I'm using a Samsung HMX-H100. An example of the file name is: HDV_001.MP4
I'm shooting in HD, 1080i. Overall, the length of the footage is about 45 minutes. Sometimes I use an external scratch disk, but I couldn't tell a difference when I was using one and not.
My sequence settings have been varied. I have let the sequence match the video clip settings, I have changed the sequence settings before I added the footage and then let the sequence settings stay like that.
In Final Cut Pro in the sequence settings, I've used the default presets, and changed it as well. Since my final goal is to burn an SD DVD, I'm looking for the best sequence settings that will allow for the fastest export from Compressor, and still maintain the HD clarity that the footage was shot with.
Let me know if you need any more details.
    Thanks.

  • Sequence Settings for Computer-targeted Projects

    Hello,
It seems to me -based on a scan of the forum's topics- that there are many people who would like to use FCP for creating computer-targeted output, that use still images as the source material. That is, projects not destined for tape or broadcast, that were not shot on video. I realize there are 3rd party apps that do this sort of thing, but the reality is there's no need to spend more money. Creating Ken Burns type effects for example, is very easy to do in the Motion Tab. It's the related sequence settings and render settings that cause the real problems IMO.
For those who do this kind of work successfully on a regular basis, it would be good to create a list of settings that work well, so others can avoid the painful process of trial and error. Sadly the manual (great as it is) isn't much help on topics relating to still image projects. They mention things like square pixels or image size in passing, but they do not give examples of how to start this type of project from scratch.
So post away; let others know what settings work for you. If you can post the project type, source type, and then the settings, so much the better. Something like:
    Type: Web Slideshow
    Source: TIF, PSD
    Frame Size:
    Field Dominance:
    Timebase:
    Video settings:
    etc

Bogie: if some of the sequence settings listed are dependant on the imported material (think that's what you're saying), why are we even able to change them? I guess this is an Apple design issue but seems strange if they "are not part of the creation process", that they should be in the same panel as the other items that are, etc.< </div>
    Umm, no.
The question here asked about export settings, they did not ask about project or sequence settings. If you meant to ask about sequence settings, that's an entirely different thread and, frankly, it's all covered in the manuals.
To repeat what Zeb has said, because we can't quite seem to get us all speaking the same language here, use conventional, known formats for your production and creation of effects; DV is a great place to star because it's flexible and it's built into FCP (h264 is not a production format, Animation isn't either, nor is MPEG2).
Render your sequences and export them as self-contained movies. Bring them into Compressor and (doh!) open that manual for a few hours of casual and frustrating reading. Compressor is where you will create your transcoded, encoded and compressed movie for delivery to the Web.
What settings will you use in Compressor? Those are determined by your Web host's demands. The smoothest path to Web delivery is to give your Webhead a DV file and tell them to use their favorite compression and encoding tools to create their own favorite formats and bitrate settings.

  • Proper sequence settings for importing Canon Rebel T2i footage

Greetings, all. I searched the forum and didn't find this question answered elsewhere, so I thought I'd ask.
I'm using Adobe Premiere Pro CS4, version 4.2.1, and I'm trying to find the ideal sequence settings for the Canon Rebel T2i, which records in MPEG-4 AVC/H.264, with adjustable frame rate. I am running on Apple Mac OSX 10.8.2.
I've been editing with this footage for over a year now, and it's always been a struggle because I have to render all footage before I can even play it in Premiere. When first imported, the render bar above the timeline is yellow.
I'd like to see if I'm doing this incorrectly; to know if I have a simple sequence setting that's incorrect. What sequence settings should I use for my imported footage to start out green and not require a lengty render for video that isn't even edited yet?
    Thank you,
    -Matt

    >When first imported, the render bar above the timeline is yellow
I think this is written for CS5, but the concept should be the same

  • Sequence settings for HD

what are the exact sequence settings for cutting 1080i60 footage in FCP? From my understanding; it's 1920 X 1080 with 59.94fps. But what fields should render first; upper or lower? I also need to know this info for using After Effects; I need to know the specifications so I can render my animations.
If there is anything else I should know, please let me know. thanks.

Open your preset in FCP or check your sequence settings and all that information will be there.

  • Sequence settings for 16:9

    Hi,
Just doing some PAL tests of 16:9 HD to 16:9 SD downconvert.
What are the sequence settings for this?
If I use the normal DV PAL 48khz, the VIEWER window shows a normal 16:0 ratio, but the CANVAS window shows a letterboxed 4:3 window. When I export this project, I get a letterboxed 4:3.
If I need to give my European client a 16:9 SD project, what are the sequence settings.
    Thank you kindly!

    Thanks Michael,
I still get images in FCP and QT exports that are letterboxed. Is that normal? I guess I assumed 16:9 FCP project windows and QT export movies would be all image and no letterbox within a 4:3 window.

I bought new computer with windows 8 (which is awful) and then bought pdf export again…
Any thoughts on how I can get back to one simple click again when I open a pdf file from an email in outlook?

  • Sequence settings for Sony HandyCam video

I'm working with video shot on a Sony Handycam HDR-CX550.  I had no problem importing it into iMovie and then to FCP, however I can't figure out what sequence settings I should use.  It appears to be 16x9, but shows up as 4x3 in my FCP bin.  Also, the sequence settings I've tried all require rendering every time I make an edit, which obviously becomes a huge pain.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

My understanding is that IMovie works with DV streams (files with a .dv extension).  You need to convert these to DV quicktimes (with a .mov extensions).  Use Compressor (which comes with fcp) to do this.  There is an apple preset for this format.

  • Best sequence settings for editing HD video material from Nikon D3S

    Hello there,
My quesstion is, what are the best settings in FCP for editing material from the Nikon D3S?
At this point I had a sequence (automatically generated from FCP) with settings
    Frame Size: 1440X1080 Aspect Ratio (1440X1080) (16:9)
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: HD 1440 X 1080
    Field Dominance Upper (Odd)
    Editing Timebase: 25
    QuickTime Video Settings
    Compressor: HDV 1080i50
Now, when I place a video clip form the D3S into the timeline, in the preview screen it does not fill the frame. I have to grab the corners and pull it to fill the gaps.
I opened the same video clip in QT to check on the inspector and this is what is telling me:
    Apple OpenDML JPEG, 1280 X 720
    FPS: 24
    Normal size: 1280X 720
    Current size: 1280 X 720 (Actual)
What do I need to do, so that the sequence settings are very similar to my AVI files? Or to make the same? I assume that if I pull the corners to fill the frame, I am loosing quality? Is that the case?
Since I need to deliver this today I will continue working on the sequence as with the former settings, but I am wondering that if I have to change the settings, will this affect my already edited material? Do I then need to start a new sequence from scratch?
Sorry, I guess too many questions, but they all lead to the same thing
    Thanks a lot!
    Emil

I have a D3s. I'm using FCP7, it's been awhile since I used version 5 so all I can do is let you know my workflow with ver.7 If you convert to ProRes 422 1080x720 24fps, it works very well, change the audio from 44 to 48kHz and set the frame rate to 24 instead of 23.98
    Here's what I do.
    1. Copy the CF card to the HD of the computer
    2. Open Compressor, in these next steps we'll make a custom Droplet.
    a. In the Settings tab, select Formats > Quick Time > Apple ProRes 422
    b. Drag this to "Drag Settings & Destinations Here" and click it
    c. In the Inspector, select Encoder
    d. Select Video Enabled, then hit Settings. Frame rate 24 > OK
    e. Select Audio Enabled, then hit Settings. Choose 48 kHz
    f. Save As. Name it. It will be in > Settings tab > Custom
    g. Click your new Cutom setting
    h. File > Create Droplet
    i. select your new custom setting
    j. save it to the desktop, leave destination as source.
    3. open the Droplet,
    4. drag all you D3s clips in, change destination to a new folder
Now you have all your original .DVI and the converted ProRes clips
    5. Open FCP, select Final Cut Pro > Audio/Video Settings
    6. in the Sequence Setting tab select Apple ProRes 422 1280x720 48kHz
    7. Clip Duplicate and give it a new name
    8. change the Editing Timebase to 24 > OK
    9. select the summary tab click Create Easy Setup
    10. name it, give it a description > Create
    11. the next time your open FCP use this Easy Setup
    12. your D3s clip should not need rendered now.
    13. When your done editing use Send to Compressor
    14. Vimeo will accept a wide varity of formats
    15. I use Quicktime H.264 with settings set to best
    16. For Blu-ray I use Export to QT Movie and use Sony DVD Architect to author the BD at 35 mbps, but that's another story.

  • Best sequence settings for imported video

I created a simple screencast of a powerpoint slideshow with another piece of software, and exported it as .mov (H264). The screencast was created at 25 FPS with no audio.
When I import it to Premiere CS5, the video quality is pretty bad. I can't read someo the smaller letters on the slides, and when the slides are static, the graphics on them pulsate. Bottom line is, I need the quality to be better.
I think the problem might be that I am not matching my sequence settings to fit the imported file. When I create a new sequence, there are dozens of different presets, and I have no idea which one is the best one.
The reason I want import to Premiere is so I can add audio...etc., and export, and upload to Youtube, burn to cd...etc. But, I want the quality to be good, and it is quite simply...terrible.
    Any help would appreciated.

  • Custom Sequence Settings for Split Screen

    Hello all,
FCP 6. I am doing a split screen where I am combining two 720x480 videos side by side. I did the whole project by scaling down both videos to match whatever the sequence settings were. How can I create a custom canvas/ sequence size to avoid scaling down the frames and cutting on the image quality?
I created a custom sequence setting doubling the width to 1440 and keeping height at 480.
Can I copy and paste the clips from the old sequence without the scaled down quality to the new sequence? How can I do that?
If I open a new sequence is the new setting going to be in effect?
Any other suggestions on how to deal with custom size frame/ split screen?
    Thank you!

    Dear Jim,
Thank you for help! Does make sense. I did all like you suggested. After removing 'basic motion' and pasting into new sequence, the clips appeared big default size instead of small. I re-applied motion attribute like you said, but isn't it scaling down again since I am sizing from big to small (50%) again?
It looks good on the screen but I am not sure about actual resolution of the clip. In clip-item properties-format I read frame size but I am not sure if this info is about the source file or the clip.
I would like to get around this issue without scaling down (keeping the scale in motion tab at 100%).
The way I tried to deal with the scaling and res before I got your answer, was after I changed the 'global' settings for the custom 1440x480 sequence, and after creating a new sequence, I went to sequence settings again (from top menu) and set to custom (1440x480) (with just global settings the pasted clips looked like before). After copying and pasting with removed attributes-distort, all was in the original right/left order normal size and resolution.
The way I tried seems to meet my need (as pasting attributes-motion to all again would be complicated as the design of the project does not stick to the clearly left/right pattern but fluctuates back and forth at times and there is too many short clips).
The only problem I have now is with the RENDER.
After I rendered what I did to your suggested solution and mine (two sequences), the whole project shows in low res. I checked the render settings in Sequence-Render Control, and both resolution and frame rate are set to 100% so I dont know what I do wrong.
    Any suggestions??
    THANKS!!!
