Serializing 100MB with rmi: StackOverflowError

Hi all,
I want to send 1000 trees with the size of 100 MB from Client to server and back. I want to have a large depth (6400). I use RMI.
Now, I made serveral experiences:
1. When I set Xss=10M, Xms=Xmx=15M I am able to send 100 trees with depth=3500 or 500
2. When I set Xss=4095M, Xms=Xmx=1908M (highest values possible) I am not able to send 1000 trees with depth=3500, but can still send 1000 trees with depth=500
3. The Errors vary from "StackOverflowError" over "OutOfMemoryError" up to "Broken Pipe"
4. Often, the tests worked fine one time and the next try killed the vm or even my linuxOS!
It is all weird. Why does increasing these parameters not enable me to send larger trees?
I would be glad If you would have any ideas or answers.

answers.I would start by looking at the design and requirements to try to figure out why that is even needed.
On a 100mbit ether net a round trip 100m would take at least 30 seconds. And with a client server, it probably wouldn't take more than 2 clients before even that rate would start going down. Not to mention the processing, such as rebuilding all those instances, would take.
And if it was really needed then I would look at a different method than RMI. RMI has a certain amount of overhead for each instance. Given that you are building a tree, most of that can be eliminated given that you will know what the tree looks like. You could potentially cut the size in half or even more.

I've tried using a custom cell format that had the text in front of the (Integer) drag and drop, with three integers and leading zeros.
That worked, but requires recreating the custom cell format for each client and tape type.
So, I've used the formula =A2& in order to play around with different things, but haven't hit on something that adjusts for increased numbers and retains the leading zeros.
I don't mind doing a starter for the first row and then adding +1 in the formulas for the rows below.
I've done that using the custom cell formats for the first B cell and then using =Bx+1 in the following cells. It works, but I'm hoping to find something simpler or that can be copied and pasted in multiple rows on one paste.

If you registered the software you should be able to find the serial number thru your Adobe account online.

I wrote a simple class for inserting rows into a database. The database is SQL Server 2000, and I am using weblogic's mssqlserver4 driver. The class works fine, but when I try to export the class as a remote object (using Sun's RMI implementation, not Weblogic RMI), I get the following error:

BoHi. Show me the whole stacktrace of the exception. The issue seems to be the driver licensing
code, which is looking for the bea.license file, and not finding it. Have your code run a System command
to find and print out the classpath it thinks is in effect. You will then see if the license file is there.

Problem using CORBA clients with RMI/EJB servers..!!!???

Hi,
I have a question on using EJB / or RMI servers with CORBA clients using
RMI-IIOP transport, which in theory should work, but in practice has few
glitches.
Basically, I have implemented a very simple server, StockTreader, which
looks up for a symbol and returns a 'Stock' object. In the first example, I
simplified the 'Stock' object to be a mere java.lang.String, so that lookup
would simply return the 'synbol'.
Then I have implemented the above, as an RMI-IIOP server (case 1) and a
CORBA server (case 2) with respective clients, and the pair of
client-servers work fine as long as they are CORBA-to-CORBA and RMI-to-RMI.
But the problem arises when I tried using the RMI server (via IIOP) with the
CORBA client, when the client tries to narrow the object ref obtained from
the naming service into the CORBA idl defined type (StockTrader) it ends up
with a class cast exception.
This is what I did to achieve the above results:
[1] Define an RMI interface StockTrader.java (extending java.rmi.Remote)
with the method,
public String lookup( String symbol) throws RMIException;
[2] Implement the StorckTrader interface (on a PortableRemoteObject derived
class, to make it IIOP compliant), and then the server to register the stock
trader with COS Naming service as follows:

On the contrary... all that is being said is that we needed to provide clearer examples/documentation in the 5.1.0 release. There will be no difference between the product as found in the service pack and the product found in the 5.1.1. That is, the only substantive will be that 5.1.1 will also
include the examples.

As I said, you must separate the idl related classes (class files and
java
files) from the rmi classes... in the rmic step, you must set a newtarget
(as you did), emit the java files into that directory (it's not clearyou
did this), then remove all the rmi class files from the class path... ifyou
need to compile more classes at that point, copy the java files to theidl
directly is you must, but you can not share the types in any way.

Migration from Serial polling to Serial queue with event handler

Hi, I am trying to migrate from classical serial polling communications to serial queue with "event handler" for the buttons pressed by the user. I have placed four while loops, one for the event handler, a second one for serial reading, a third one for serial writing (depending on what button was pressed) and the last one for processing what was read from the serial reading while loop, via a queue.
My attached device reads the signals from 8 sensor ( 4 temperature and another 4 temperature plus humidity in the same sensor ) and send them via serial to Lavbiew.
First of all, only once just after running the LV program, I must turn on my attached device with an ON command plus a carriage return after that the device will respond with the number of sensors plugged to it, disabling the corresponding buttons in the front panel. Then labview must wait until I pressed Acquire Button (event handler) and send a CF command plus what sensors to acquire plus a carriage return, then the device will respond continuously to labview with the sensor readings until I press the stop button (event handler), there is also another button to exit the program, also with event handler.
I am having problems using the event handler and the queues because I am new using these structures, I have looked at the LV examples but there is nothing concrete on using serial with event handler and queue.
Take a look at my VI and you will soon notice what kind of problems I am having, any suggestions will welcome.

Hi Luisete,
Maybe the problem arise because you are En- and DeQueue in parallel. You do a lot of things in parallel, that is nice if you are sure that one loop doesn't have to wait for another loop. Make sure you don't dequeue before enqueue.

I am currently implementing a Registry, and want to use dynamic proxy to wrap around the registry stub, to pass extra information to the client.
I've tried it, but the program will hang and get this exception:

Bizzare behavior with RMI using the localhost

I'm still new to RMI and I'm observing some strange behavior with RMI.
I'm using RMI as a communication protocol in a client/server database application. Since I don't have access to a network at the moment I was running the application on a single host and using the local host parameter to test my RMI code.
In my code if I do a naming lookup on the local host and it works as I would expect it to. (Note before this code fragment runs I've all ready started the rmi registry and bound the RemoteDatabase to it.)

Now if I replace "127.0.0.1" with a garbage value such as "12453" it still works!
This is not the behavior I expected. I expected that the Naming.lookup would throw a exception of some kind.
Can any one explain this behavior?
The reason I would like this to work as I expected is that in my application the IP address string and port number are variables that I allow the user to set through a dialog. If the user puts in a garbage string for the IP address I want to catch the exception and display an appropriate warning dialog to the user. I can't seem to do that since the Naming.lookup() for a garbage IP address doesn't seem to throw any exception that I have been able to detect.
I've actually observed even stranger behavior. If I use a garbage string such as 124.4.1.2, which is invalid IP address, the Naming.lookup() will throw an exception. If I put in a garbage string such as "aaaaaa" for the IP address the Naming.lookup() throws an exception. This is the behavior I would expect.
However as I mentioned if I use a string such as "12345" for the IP address the code works! This seemingly inconsistent behavior is driving me nuts so if any of you RMI gurus out there can help me out I would very much appreciate it.

lookup uses URI parsing so the fact that your using numbers being equivalent to localhost seems to be due to the fact that that is an invalid host according to the javadocs for the getHost primitive attached below(marked the most important parts). In this case returning null is interpreted as absent , therefore => localhost. Nothing about the port! Maybe you can take it from here. Seems you'll have to make some user input validation yourself, in your application. Hope I haven't missed anything.

Serializing text with component

The text is just ascii text, but it could be a considerable size (like 64k). The purpose would be to serialize, and then de-serialze all of this custom information I need for that component (and some other stuff). An example would be to save a list of names with my 'Name' component.
I don't see any evidence that it is possible...

Well, imagine if we had to do serialization in this
manner (i.e. manually). Not a pretty picture in my
opnion...sure, that's why the API exists... don't take it the other way round and apply serialization to every single piece of data
why do you think that serialization is easier btw ? here's the non-serialized version :
