Serious usage?

i received an email today which stated:
"Regarding JMS, we strongly recommend that you use a commercial JMS implementation such as ******** instead of the reference implementation that comes with J2EE SDK. The reference implementation is proof of concept and is not intended for any serious usage."
..... uhm..... any comment?
i'm new to JMS, so suggestions would be most welcome.

I would agree with this statement.
Though open source implementations come for free but there are multiple issues associated with them :
1. No support. if there is a bug you are gone.
2. Less documentation
3. Performance issues.
4. Less feature set e.g. most of the open source products don't provide rich support for security as JMS specs doesn't cover it
I would recommend you to go with some commercial product e.g. FioranoMQ, Tibco, IBM etc.
if you are planning to use it in a live application.
In case you want to use for educational purposes you can very well use the open source products.

Is Solaris 9 Intel mature enough for serious usage?

Hello everyone,
I'm a Solaris newbie. I downloaded Solaris 8 Intel and installed a few times with and without success since Sun first released version 8 for free download. I had sucessfully installed Solaris 8 on Compaq Proliant Server and IBM Intel Xseries (with bad video) but failed on Dell PowerEdge (due to the lack of RAID and SCSI dirver or I didn't know where to get the drivers my hardware.
The reason I posed the question is that the System Requirement Note states the Solaris 9 x86 OE Customer Early Access software is not suitable for deployment on any production systems.
Is the current release of version 9 stable or final release? I'd rather not waste my bandwidth, time (It'd take me 3 days to download 3 iso images), CDs for beta releases.
Please advise me.

Depends on what you mean by "serious usage". Like right now, it provides a electronic place for me to dump my school work to instead of bringing disks or blank CDs.
Overall, it's an alright system. Though, Solaris 9 was a little more difficult to set up on my old computer (probably more because of the computer itself rather than the software.)
But, I did it. Installed Solaris 9 on 32 MB of RAM on a Pentium MMX 166.

Airport Bases Stations are they good for serious usage?

Hello, I was looking for a forum about the base stations in general but this is as close as I think I'm going to get.
I love apple and apple products but I'm feeling a little let down by the base stations. Here is the deal. I'm setting up wireless access in my company and I decided to go with the base stations not only because of my love of apple but also I've heard that they use them in schools, etc and they are solid products. So I went out an got a few. currently I have two set up with WDS and they work fine but only when there a few people on the network. As soon as the load increases they stop dead in their tracks.
eg. I checked and at one point I had 37 people connected to the units. both units sharing the load. I constantly had to reset them as they would stop dead in there tracks at random points.
So my question is; Is there something that I'm doing wrong?, are the units not as good as they say they are? or is there a limit on the number of clients they can handle.
You guys should also note that I thought the issue was limited these base stations so I went out and got two new ones and I have the same problem.
I'm working the base station extremes, the ones before before the new wireless n models.
Any help would be wonderful, thanks all.

Is it OK to re-use 1 instance of editors and renderers?

Hi,
The simple version of the question, is can I make 1 instance of my custom cell editor and cell renderer classes and safely use it in all my JTable instances?
For example, I have a DateRenderer class, and instantiate it in a static member, and use it in all Date columns and tables, many of which will be instatiated at one time. If a column needs a non-default format, then I guess I'd create a special instance for it, other wise it would use the default instance.
It seems to be OK so far, but but my program hasn't received any serious usage yet.
As to why, I'm thinking this way, I've been messing around with CellEditors and renderers and despite wanting to use default functionality whenver possible, I find that I'm using custom versions for every situation... so if possible, I'd like to keep the number of instances to a minimum.

OK, I see what you mean.
Stop cell editing on focus lost isn't the default behaviour, but I've had to use it anyway (it seems to make sense).
The reason I asked is that, to get the behaviour that I want, it looks like I'll have to have my custom renderers and editors on every column of every table so I'd like to avoid unneccessary instantiation.
I'm aiming for a system where:
- 1 click selects the row (default behaviour),
- 2 clicks starts editing the cell (also default),
- but tabbing or pressing enter after editing a cell keeps you in editing mode.
I don't suppose that many people here have had experience with this, but entering Japanese (and presumably other non ascii type character sets) using MS's IME doesn't work very well with the standard JTable behaviour. If you don't double click, the entered japanese text appears in a little IME window somewhere on the screen (no neccessarily near the editing cell) and just gets lost when you press enter. You have to double click every time, and I can't see the users accepting that.
I'll be investigating this over tme, and hopefully will be able to get it working smoothly.

I've been searching through the forum to answer my questions, and have gleaned a few tips. I'm looking to get a new laptop for a specific purpose and wondered if anyone else has used it for the reasons below, and would it be a good solution for me?
I currently use a MacBook Pro as my only computer and my new job are supplying me with some peripherals so I can set it up as a desktop computer at home. I'm going to be doing a lot of travelling now for the job, and would like a super-light laptop to take around that doesn't give me back ache! The MBA seems ideal for this. This is what I would need to be able to do on it:
- Hook it up to a projector to deliver Powerpoint/ Keynote presentations (very important),
- Extract some clips from my company's educational DVD to include in the Power Point (very important also!),
- Wifi - email and internet on the move. (Not particularly UTube or video streaming),
- Using Office suite (mostly Word, Excel and Entourage),
- Be able to print,
- Back up work docs to my MyBook hard drive,
- Connect up to my home office internet connection via ethernet cable,
- Use a music software programme such as Sibelius
- Very light usage of Logic Express and playing back wav files or mp3s
All my 'serious' usage will be on my MacBook Pro at home.
I'm terrible at waiting for updates, but I wonder if an updated version is round the corner that might be worth holding out for? I've read the rumours and there's nothing concrete....

I have an Windows-free home (ie all Mac) and recently traded up for my wife from a MacBook to an Air, and I've never seen her happier with a computer, not even close. Her "specs" are almost identical to yours, except for the music apps, and the weight and size factor is a huge positive for her as she has problems with hand strength (and women look so bad with that hunchback thing). PowerPoint to projectors works great, better than some of her colleagues with WinXP laptops actually. The Office 2003 suite works fine, she uses Word, PowerPoint and Excel; haven't tried Entourage or the new Office as we see no advantage.
You'll have to buy a little cable adapter to hook up to wired Ethernet at home, which might cost you almost as much as a simple wireless access point but either way works. Also no problem with WiFi away from home.
Not clear to me how you plan to do the DVD extract...you can buy an external drive, or port the clips over from the Pro.
No problem at all transferring files from one 'book to the other, we do that all the time.
One word of caution - be sure you are willing and able to live with the one USB port and a lack of any optical drive inside. If you had to lug around an external optical and a USB hub to do what you need, then the advantage rapidly evaporates. That said, my wife finds the lack of ports an ADVANTAGE - less to worry about learning which is which so on. Performance is modest too, but for email and modest office docs, you really can't tell a difference.

I bought a component av cable for my ipad2. I get audio but no video. user guide states that it should mirrorthe screen when connected. Can someone please help?

Best Plug-in/External Editor for Aperture Local Adjustments

I've been playing with trial versions of Nik's plug-in suite, Lightzone, and I have a version of CS3.
From the standpoint of making local adjustments ( hopefully something we will see in the next version of Aperture), which do you feel is the easiest to use without compromising results.
I sorta lean towards Nik's plug-in especially Viveza but would like to hear from those of you who have had some serious usage with any of these tools as with the trial period and being busy, there's only so much time I can spend on it. Nik suite is being bundled for discount and there's also a discount on Lightzone as an external editor.

CS3 is a great external editor- If you want something that is really easy and quick to use the Nik software is amazing. The three tools that I use a lot from Nik (I use them directly from Aperture and in Photoshop on smart objects) are Viveza, Silver EFEX Pro, and sharpener.

Adobe Form - dynamic object selection/control

Hi,
I am very new to using the Acrobat Form building tool. I am currently using it in conjunction with Adobe LifeCycle designer 8.
I would like to create a form which behaves like an xHTML doc, and client-side JavaScript.
I would like to be able to create groups of objects (Text, textboxes, comboboxes, etc), that can be shown or hidden depending on user selection/input in a different control/object. This is a pretty general question, but I am having difficulty finding documentation on how to approach.
This may be more difficult. The form will live in a folder on a shared drive. When the user completes and submits the form, I need for it to do the following:
Email to a specific address, depending on a user selection of a combobox value on the form.
Then create a copy of itself in a subfolder in the same shared drive, with a dynamically generated unique title/id (like a database key field).
Are any of these things possible. I would probably just create an xHTML form to do this, but currently we do not have a web server available to house such a form. And the portability of the Acrobat forms seems useful and practical in the long run.
If someone could point me in the right direction, website and/or online PDF publication, I would be ever so grateful.

This doesn't seem to relate to Create PDF Online, a web service from
Adobe. I recommend the LiveCycle Designer forum.
Bear in mind that e-mail submission of PDFs is really, in my view, a
tool for testing. Any serious usage would use a web server, just like
an HTML form.

Major AI disruption - malware? misconfiguration?

I have a serious usage problemthat manifests itself this way: a few minutes (5? 30?) after starting the computer and AICS5, I can select any tool from the toolbar, but the only tool I get on the screen is the Hand tool. As if I were leaning on the space bar (I'm not).
Similarly, yesterday, drawing a rectangle resulted in a hundred rectangles along my path (which I remember is an AI feature somewhere).
Sunday, when I double-clicked a .psd document, PS opened but the document did not open. Nothing solved that but a reboot.
Thirty seconds ago, after typing that last sentence, I popped over to illustrator and it was working fine (or I was able to draw a bunch of random shapes). Now, I'm stuck on the Hand tool again.
I haven't seen evidence of misbehavior in Windows or any other applications.
This seems malicious to me (because it's such a nuisance), but I don't get any results from AVG, Malware Bytes, or MS Security Essentials, or from a couple of rootkit investigators.(They found a couple of trojans in email archives from 5 years ago.)
This morning I uninstalled CS5 withouth deleting prefs and reinstalled it - no change. Now I'm going to uninstall including prefs and reinstall again (and will post here if that makes a difference).
I will say this: the only strange thing I've done in the last week was download a file using an installer from download.com. I though Cnet was a trustworthy source, but after installing this FLAC converter, I found that they'd installed toolbars in all my browsers and in fact in my system. I'm wondering if that was also a vehicle for whatever this is - or if I caused some sort of harm in the process of uninstalling that.

Sounds like some process gets started after you reboot and that is conflicting with Illustrator. Bring up your task manager (Ctrl Shift ESC if my memory is right - on a mac during the day), and either watch processes that get laoded, and kill them one by one until you find what is messing up your computer.
Keep a look out if you don't boot anything else but Illustrator if the computer works fine, this can be triggered by either an app/action, or something in the background which is trolling your computer.

Btrfs + luks cause serious CPU usage

I often tried to forget about this, but in a time I use a external disk with btrfs.
bus as soon as I mount the disk via luks mapper device, I get serious CPU usage by kthreads. It goes that far that even typing into pidgin gets lagged/delayed.
Does anybody else have this kind of issue? An internal disk has the verysame effect. Tested copies with these combinations: ext4→btrfs; btrfs→btrfs; btrfs→ext4

I use pretty much the same options as you:
$ grep backup /etc/fstab
/dev/mapper/backup /mnt/backup btrfs defaults,noauto 0 0
I use the standard kernel from testing which is 2.6.39 though I have not seen this behavior on any previous kernel either.
If you don't use an indexer and something like iotop shows no activity I'm not sure what to try next. If you have hourly backups in place how many snapshots are there present on the volume? Are they being rotated or just building up? Could btrfs be doing some sort of rebalance (seems unlikely on a single disk pool)? Probably not being much help sorry.

Serious CPU usage problem

Hi everyone,
I used to have my own kernel running and everything was fine.
Recently, after the cool changes which happend with kernel/udev related stuff in the last months and weeks, and with the "beyond" kernel being available and having the possibility to use software suspend2 an easy way, I thought it would perhaps be better to switch to the beyond kernel package, staying up to date easily and not having to care about wether some update perhaps wouldn't work with my old kernel anymore...
After some minor hassle, I got it working fine and thought, well, runs reasonably well. But then I discovered some strange issues:
* If I boot with the regular kernel, log in to the console, use mplayer to play an mp3/ogg file, I got 22% cpu usage by mplayer, and additional system cpu usage, summing up to only 66% of my cpu is in idle state!
* If I do the same thing with the beyond kernel, it is still around 7 to 8 %, the CPU has a maximum of 87% idle time
* If I start up X and start xmms, without playing anything, even with stock configuration and nothing changed/enabled, xmms will take 12% of my CPU!
* If I run some other things aside (like mplayer), xmms - still being idle! - still uses 4% CPU
* if I actually use xmms, it takes up to 20% cpu
* now mplayer only uses 2% CPU - but still too much for only playing a music file
So I just don't have anything left than scratching my head. What's going on there?

XMMS doesn't play nice with today's Linux scheduler. It's old. (I still use XMMS -- out of sheer habit -- and ignore the problem.)

JDev 10.0.1.3 CPU Usage Spikes - Somewhat Serious!

I have noticed that JdevW.exe process in task menager has annoying CPU usage spikes every 2-3 seconds. This does NOT happen if I use 10.0.1.2 version.
I have fairly powerful Dell workstation. Any ideas? Configuration problem?
BTW embedded OC4J is not running.

I am actually not doing anything. As soon as I open JDev I can see (and feel) that performance problem. Every time the 'spike' occurs, mouse gets 'frozen' for a fraction of a second. It is anoying a bit.
My coworker's installation do not have that problem and I wonder if add-ons that I have downloaded and installed would create this behavior. BTW, how do I figure out what add-ons (plugins) I got?
I can see 'jucheck.exe' and 'jusched.exe' processes as well but even when I killed them the spikes occur.
Any thought?

Having problems with usage on my phone - in serious need of help

My phone continues to say that the "other" on it is taking up 3.3 GB - all other people I know with the iPhone have other taking up only about 1 GB on their phones. I do not even have an entire GB used up with apps, and I have almost 2 GB used up for music - I recently had to delete all my photos to put on a few more songs. I would really like to know why it says my usage is taking up so much room and how I can fix it so that it is actually correct so that I can put the things I want on my phone.

Serious unexplained data usages

I not sure what's going on but I keep getting my connection dropped and my data usages went from 4 percent to close if not 10 percent in several days and I even took my battery so I wouldn't go over my limit and it's still climbing. Also I can't sign in to the community. It says invalid but I've redone it so many times so I no its right.

What phone? Did you look to see what app is using data? Did you reboot the phone?
Each day is 3.3% of a month, so your trajectory would not be to run out of data if you are increasing from 4% to 10% over 2 days or more (4% + 3.3% + 3.3%= 10.6%)

My laptop (win7 2ghz, 1gig) has 100% cpu usage with itunes installed (even when not running itunes) since the upgrade. i had to uninstall. tried installing but still the same problem. my daughter wants the new ipad, but this is a serious problem.

when itunes upgraded my laptop went to 100% cpu usage. only solution was uninstall. have tried itunes again as my daughter wants the new ipad. still same problem tho so not keen to spend £400 on new pad without pc support. anyone help? (ps been using ipod touches 1 and 2, been great source of pleasure for my two girls, but cant sync them, so using the little shuffles for music, syncing to an old version of itunes on an old netbook - had the sense to switch off upgrades when the new version went wrong)

Close your iTunes,
Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
(Win XP SP2 & above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
netsh winsock reset
Hit "ENTER" key
Restart your computer.
If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.
Now launch your iTunes and see if it is working now.
If you are still having these type of problems after trying the winsock reset, refer to this article to identify which software in your system is inserting LSP:
